Slow list
Hi List Has anybody got an idea about why this list is so slow? When people send a message it takes an average of 45 min. from a mail is sent to the list till it is received by the people on the list making it hard to ask quick questions. Java in Mandrake 8.1
Hi, I am new to Linux, and to this mailing list. I am in the process of setting up open-office but setup cant find the java environment... I read the notes it gave me and also seached for java... Re: Java in Mandrake 8.1
Hi, If you have the download edition of mandrake 8.1 there is no java installed only kaffe which is as far as I know not suitable to use it with StarOffice. For a proper support you should download and install Java2 SDK (either get it from www.blackdown.org or from java.sun.com) Greets, Ingo On Fri, 5 Apr 2002, Walter Logeman wrote: > Hi, > > I am new to Linux, and to this mailing list. > > I am in the process of setting up open-office but setup cant find > the java environment... Hello, I have no idea, but it's not a problem to me (I take more than 45 minutes to reply anyway ;-). The server might be overloaded (seems unlikely though...). I believe you should look for java all lowercase. Locate is case sensitive (afai remember). I don't have my Linux box with me (and I don't have Open Office installed on it anyway), but that would be where I would start... Yes, it is very slow. Perhaps this is a moderated list? But why not try `locate -i`, and if that doesn't work you could also try running updatedb (this updates the database locate uses, just in case it's too old and doesn't have the java stuff in it yet - but that seems unlikely if java was installed out of the box together with the rest of the system :), and then locate again, or you could just use find: `find / -iname java` should do (but will be an awful lot slower than locate). I think java is usually installed in /usr/lib/jdk, and there is probably a symbolic link to /usr/lib/java - at least that's how it was set up on my box (but all that might be different with Kaffe...). I can't agree more with you. Distros don't usually install the JDK or JRE, that's a licensing problem I suppose but Sun should do something about this. I mean even Mac OS comes up with the JDK installed !! Now, I thought that java was installed with Open Office !! I remember installing Star Office 5.2 a long time ago and some sort of java (1.1 or 1.2 don't remember) was installed. Wait a second, I own a copy of SuSE 7.1 (yeah, I know...), and there is definitely a Java SDK (1.2-something I think) somewhere on one of those disks. I can't say if it's included in the standard installation (or any of the predefined setups) but it's definitely there and you can install it when you set up the system. In fact, that package has caused me quite a bit of grief a while back, when I had installed JDK 1.3 manually and some script kept "updating" the symbolic links /usr/lib/java and /usr/bin/java* to point to the old installation, the JDK 1.2, while I wanted to use the new flashy one... Elias. PS: On second thoughts, I can't actually tell you for sure that that was the Sun SDK... But I do think so. -- "There are people who don't like capitalism, and there are people who don't like PCs, but there's no one who likes the PC who doesn't like Microsoft." -- Bill Gates -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Java plugins for Mozilla in Linux
Hi, I have Mozilla working in Linux. It seems to work on some things that demand a plugin but on others it asks me to download and install a plugin. However the result is the unsuccessful each time (see clip from browser below.). I am not surprised as it seems to be a Windows plugin. I presume the Java i have working is Java script - but the other is missing? I will look for a Linux plugin. Some broad guidelines would be good at this sage. I have looked up heaps on the web but I am caught simply not getting the basics. Is this plugin related to the Java i need for OpenOffice that I am about to try and find as suggested by Mark Christiaens, who wrote: > Your Java should be in /usr/Java or /opt/IBMJava2-13/. If you > don't have a Java runtime installed you can download one from Sun > (Java.sun.com) or IBM. Walter Install Results Java 2 Plug-in for Linux: Download was unsuccessful. Please try again. The Java Plug-in is 7.6Mb and will take you 37 minutes to fully download with a 28.8 modem or 19 minutes with a 56K modem. Alternatively, you can download this plug-in directly from our FTP site at ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.2.2/windows/win32/plugins/jre131_02i.xpi for Windows. Re: Java plugins for Mozilla in Linux
I recently used JRE 1.4 with netscape 6.2.2 and that worked you can do the same for mozilla too. Download JRE 1.4 if you can (1.3.1 does work too but I've seen a couple of annoying glitches with the default plugin they have) Then do the following, if libjavaplugin_oji does not exist don't worry. (cd /usr/local/mozilla/plugins; rm libjavaplugin_oji.so; ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.0/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji140.so libjavaplugin_oji.so) regards calvin Walter Logeman wrote: > > Hi, > > I have Mozilla working in Linux. That is very helpful. I now grasp that there are two things to do: 1. Instal Sun JDK 1.4.0 2. Install the Plugin. I am making good headway with #1. I have a file called: j2sdk-1_4_0-linux-i386-rpm.bin Which sounds good as I like to keep the rpm database upto date. However I don't grasp a few things and i can't seem to find the help I need easily - not sure where to look. Got as far as: http://java.sun.com/linux/ but there is a lot of info there, most of it not what i need. I need more newbie type help. Here are my questions 1. What is .bin in the file i have ... do I just run it? 2. Where shld i put the Java installation. Somnone suggested in the Home dir for me as user? That would make it easier to reinstall the whole distribution? (I am looking to doing Mandrake 8.1 to 8.2.) 3. Should I be su when setting this up? 4. How will I know I have JDK working? I will know when the plugin works in Mozilla but what about before that? I am setting up OpenOffice and it can't find java - so i presume that the oo setup will work? Thanks again!
