Hi all,
Is anyone using jaws with digital modes of amateur radio?  I'm doing some experimenting with this with moderate success but I'm sure it could be better.  Any ideas?

[JAWS-Users] Re: key command to mute jaws?

2007-01-05 Thread David Ferrin

Bring up your keyboard manager then make sure you are focused on the default
file. Tab once in to the list of available functions. Then start typing
mute until you hear mute synthesizer which will have no keystroke assigned.
Press control A and give it what ever keystroke your heart desires. Save
your changes and close out the keyboard manager.

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions. I was looking for an alt
control key command that would shut Jaws off quickly. The Jaws verbosity
will work, the insert V turns Jaws on quickly. If I press insert V and
press the end key that takes me to the speech verbosity, then I just need to
press the space bar to shut Jaws off, then the insert V to bring Jaws back
again.

No, that only _stops_ JAWS during extended speech. What he wants is to
actually keep JAWS from ever speaking. It's possible to assign a keystroke
to this (it's a toggle), but that has to be done through Keyboard Manager in
the Default file. As David also pointed out, it's possible to keep JAWS from
ever being used with any specific application by means of the Configuration
Manager.

Why? It's not that I'm questioning your intent here, but there are
implications to doing this of which you may not be aware and there are ways
to accomplish this using Configuration Manager if we just know the exact

You will need to assign it yourself. That's because the function is

before I reinvent the wheel.I'll leave this message here so I won't forget

[JAWS-Users] Headache With Outlook & Distribution Lists

Hey Guys,

I am having a problem today that I don't know what to do for or even why it is

to send one to a distribution list, it is hanging up in my outbox and not going
anywhere. Has
anyone ever had this problem? If so, what's going on?

[JAWS-Users] Re: How do I turn off the history display in IE 7?

2007-01-05 Thread Cohn, Jonathan C [IT]

I just use Control-H in V6 to toggle the history.

I have no idea if this works for IE7.

In IE 6, this was easy. Once I turned on the history display, all I had to
do was to press ALT+V, arrow to the Explorer Bar submenu, press RIGHT ARROW,
then find History and press ENTER to uncheck it. However, this isn't working
with IE 7 unless I first completely close it down and restart it.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Ode To Dave

2007-01-05 Thread David Ferrin

Thank you folks for the kind thoughts and words that go along with the
sentiment. I'd like to point out in this time of reflection on what has
transpired as well as what is to come. FYI I've renewed the web domain for
the next three years already so it's good until 2010 right now. That means
with luck we can keep this list going and growing for a long time to come.
Actually it is my intention to keep the web site up and available to all for
the foreseeable future with no plans to take it down. In my mind I started
to continue the fine work that Debbie had started a number of years ago and
now that she is no longer able to work her brand of magic I feel that
somebody should pick up the ball and run with it, or at my age walk at a
steady pace at least. So that is at this time the plan for things to come,
I've updated the web site several times just this week alone and am very
pleased that many folks are accessing it's pages. I like checking the
various counters to see just how popular each and every page is to the
blindness community. Now it won't be as good as what she put up for many
years but I'm sort of taking it in another direction with the audio
tutorials ETC. Oh well enough of my ramblings for this morning, so once
again thanks to all now the treadmill is calling my name. You know some
mornings I'd like to change my name so it wouldn't recognize me.

David Ferrin
I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I'll probably screw that one up
too.

In fact this might be a way that each of us can help with those who wish

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying JAWS Files

Donny and anyone else interested in this subject -

What follows is not trivial information and should be read completely
before starting to manually move customized files from an older to a
newer JAWS version. I realize that it's not going to make for the most
exciting (and maybe not even the easiest) reading, but it's absolutely
essential information and faioling to understand it and follow the
instructions may result in major JAWS problems.

Let's begin by defining some terms:

Shared files - These are the files that are installed whenever you
install a new version of JAWS. They are placed into a different folder
than are the user files and should _never_ be changed or altered.
Similarly, the contents of the shared files folder should never be
changed in any way by either adding new (third party) files or by
removing files you don't think you'll ever use. Doing either can break
the installation or repair routines.

User files - These are any files you've changed using Script Manager,
Keyboard Manager, Configuration Manager, etc.; as well as any third party
files (files not supplied by Freedom Scientific). Any time you install
third party files, you must place them into the user files folder.

Okay, let's find the two user files folders first:

Note: it may be helpful to you as you proceed if you have Windows
Explorer configured to announce the full path whenever you change from
one folder to another as you'll be doing below. This is set by way of
Control Panel>Folder Options and is found under the View tab. The
specific items are Display the Full Path in the Address Bar and Display
the Full Path in the Title Bar. Both of these should be checked or
indicated as "on."

1. Press Windows Key to get to the Start Menu.
2. Press the letter P to move to the Programs submenu.
3. Press the letter J to move to the version of JAWS you've been
using--the one whose files you want to copy.
4. Press RIGHT ARROW twice until you hear "Explore My Settings" and press
ENTER. This will open the user files folder for the source version of
JAWS.
5. Now, repeat steps 1 through 4, except that in step 3, you want the
version of JAWS you just installed--the version to which you want to copy
the files.

Next, some general things to be aware of:

1. You should move any third party files of _any_ type (that is, any file
extension) that you find in the source folder. Third party files are
files that are _not_ part of the set of files that are supplied with the
JAWS package. For example, Ad-Aware, Nero, etc.; that is, files that
you've downloaded from somewhere else (like JFWlite.com) and installed
yourself.
2. You are responsible for making any changes to JAWS-supplied scripts on
your own. Even if you used the Merge tool, it doesn't update script
files, so if you've changed something in Default.jss, Internet
Explorer.jss, Outlook Express.jss, etc., you'll have to make those same
changes all over again with the new versions of the same scripts. You
should _never_, under any circumstances whatever, copy entire
JAWS-supplied script files (files with an extension of .jkm, .jss, .jsb,
.jsd, .jsh, or .jsm) from one JAWS version to another. Scripts are unique
to each JAWS version and cannot be used across versions. As previously
indicated, this may or may not be true for third party script files, but
when FS releases a new version of JAWS, the scripts receive as much work
and as many changes as any part of the program, particularly those
scripts for major applications like Outlook and Outlook Express, Internet
Explorer, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. This same prohibition applies
equally to configuration files (files with an extension of .jcf): these
should _never_ be copied from an older version of JAWS to a newer one.
3. You must be aware that the names of some files have changed and that
because of this, you must rename them if you copy them. For example, in
JAWS 7.0, files for Outlook Express were named Outlook Express 5-6.*, but
in 7.10, the name was change

I suppose you could, but that'd involve more work setting up the path
within
the self-extracting .exe file. You could just ZIP up the files to be
moved,
then extract them to the user files folder in the newly installed
version,
but you'd have to know what the exact path is and to keep things as
simple
as possible, I deliberately didn't get into that issue. For anyone
who wants
to know, the exact path to all user files folders since JAWS 6.0 is:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\xxx\Settings\ENU

where xxx is the JAWS version, either 6.0, 6.10, 6.20, 7.0, 7.10, or
8.0.

your own. Even if you used the Merge tool, it doesn't update script
files,
so if you've changed something in Default.jss, Internet Explorer.jss,
Outlook Express.jss, etc., you'll have to make those same changes all
over
again with the new versions of the same scripts. You should _never_,
under
any circumstances whatever, copy entire JAWS-supplied script files
(files
with an extension of .jkm, .jss, .jsb, .jsd, .jsh, or .jsm) from one
JAWS
version to another. Scripts are unique to each JAWS version and
cannot be
used across versions. As previously indicated, this may or may not be
true
for third party script files, but when FS releases a new version of
JAWS,
the scripts receive as much work and as many changes as any part of
the
program, particularly those scripts for major applications like
Outlook and
Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. This
same
prohibition applies equally to configuration files (files with an
extension
of .jcf): these should _never_ be copied from an older version of
JAWS to a
newer one.
3. You must be aware that the names of some files have changed and
that
because of this, you must rename them if you copy them. For example,
in JAWS
7.0, files for Outlook Express were named Outlook Express 5-6.*, but
in
7.10, the name was changed to Outlook Express.*. Similarly, the
Internet
Explorer files names were also changed, but I think this took place
between
6.20 and 7.0. In any case, the JAWS Merge tool does _not_ always
catch these
name changes, so that's yet another good reason not to rely on it.
4. While you can move customized graphics files (with an extension of
.jgf)
from older versions of JAWS to newer versions, don't do this when the
new
version is 8.0. Beginning with 8.0, FS began to make some major
changes in
some applications (Outlook and Outlook Express, for example) in terms
of how
various characteristics (such as whether or not a message contains an
attachment) were recognized and announced and they're not relying on
graphics as much as they used to, so older .jgf files may not work as
they
once did. If you have customized graphics files for JAWS-supplied
applications, try re-creatin

Steve -

Welcome to the list.

I'd bet a year's salary that you'll not find any existing scripts, since
you're talking about a specific model of a specific computer brand with
specific versions of these utilities. This is going to limit your
options--either learn scripting, yourself, so you can write scripts or pay
somebody (and the price won't be cheap) to write them for you. Even then,
depending on how these utilities were written, they may not be scriptable,
anyway. You can try using the JAWS Cursor and the mouse button simulation
keys--I've found this technique to occasionally be useful with such programs
for which no scripts exist and which aren't very well behaved with the JAWS
default scripts.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Acer notebook utilities with JAWS?

I recently bought an Acer notebook at Future Shop. It was a bit of an
emergency because my old notebook had broken, and I need one, so there was
no time to shop around.

The Acer came with a bunch of pre-installed utilities that I'd like to use,
but they're not accessible at all. For example there's some program called
"Acer Empowering Technology," which does all the power management settings
for the computer. But JAWS 7.0 won't tell me what any of the buttons are
called.

Does anyone know of scripts, or something, that I could use? Any other
suggestions?

This is my first post here. Hi everyone.

Probably the best thing you could do is to have someone look at the buttons
and tell you what they are. Then you can label them by doing a control
insert tab.
But then you most likely won't know what to do after you activate the
buttons, but you could try.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Copying JAWS Files

2007-01-05 Thread Walt Smith

Donny and anyone else interested in this subject -

What follows is not trivial information and should be read completely before
starting to manually move customized files from an older to a newer JAWS
version. I realize that it's not going to make for the most exciting (and
maybe not even the easiest) reading, but it's absolutely essential
information and faioling to understand it and follow the instructions may
result in major JAWS problems.

Let's begin by defining some terms:

Shared files - These are the files that are installed whenever you install a
new version of JAWS. They are placed into a different folder than are the
user files and should _never_ be changed or altered. Similarly, the contents
of the shared files folder should never be changed in any way by either
adding new (third party) files or by removing files you don't think you'll
ever use. Doing either can break the installation or repair routines.

User files - These are any files you've changed using Script Manager,
Keyboard Manager, Configuration Manager, etc.; as well as any third party
files (files not supplied by Freedom Scientific). Any time you install third
party files, you must place them into the user files folder.

Okay, let's find the two user files folders first:

Note: it may be helpful to you as you proceed if you have Windows Explorer
configured to announce the full path whenever you change from one folder to
another as you'll be doing below. This is set by way of Control Panel>Folder
Options and is found under the View tab. The specific items are Display the
Full Path in the Address Bar and Display the Full Path in the Title Bar.
Both of these should be checked or indicated as "on."

1. Press Windows Key to get to the Start Menu.
2. Press the letter P to move to the Programs submenu.
3. Press the letter J to move to the version of JAWS you've been using--the
one whose files you want to copy.
4. Press RIGHT ARROW twice until you hear "Explore My Settings" and press
ENTER. This will open the user files folder for the source version of JAWS.
5. Now, repeat steps 1 through 4, except that in step 3, you want the
version of JAWS you just installed--the version to which you want to copy
the files.

Next, some general things to be aware of:

1. You should move any third party files of _any_ type (that is, any file
extension) that you find in the source folder. Third party files are files
that are _not_ part of the set of files that are supplied with the JAWS
package. For example, Ad-Aware, Nero, etc.; that is, files that you've
downloaded from somewhere else (like JFWlite.com) and installed yourself.
2. You are responsible for making any changes to JAWS-supplied scripts on
your own. Even if you used the Merge tool, it doesn't update script files,
so if you've changed something in Default.jss, Internet Explorer.jss,
Outlook Express.jss, etc., you'll have to make those same changes all over
