What version of Jaws are you using?
As far as I know, jaws works with messenger quite well depending on the
version of both programmes you're using.

Jason,

Try rebooting your system after you go through the process of
reassigning a new hot key and see if that works.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] creating shortcut key not working

Hi list,

I have been having trouble with shortcut keys. I had the short cut key
control alt J for Jaws 7.0 and control alt K for Jaws 6.20. I am going to
install Jaws 8.0 and so thought I would change the Jaws 7.0 hotkey to
control alt K instead of Jaws 6.20. I always like to have my old version of
Jaws as a back-up, incase I have problems with the new version. I lost my
Jaws 7.0 hotkey of control alt J when I did a repair of Jaws recently. I
therefore did the following procedure to reassign the new order of hotkeys I
want. I selected Jaws 6.20 on the desktop. I then pressed applications. I
arrowed up to properties and went into it. I tabbed across to the create
hotkey section(or whatever it was called). I deleted the current hotkey of
control alt K. I heard Jaws say something about none. I tabbed to the okay
button and pressed spacebar. I went back to the desktop and selected Jaws
7.0. I then followed the above procedure. However, instead of deleting the
hotkey(there wasn't one to delete anyway), I typed the letter K. I tabbed
and shifted tab back to make sure it had taken. I heard Jaws say Hotkey
control alt K. I tabbed to okay and hit spacebar. However, when I unloaded
Jaws 7.0 and pressed the hotkey control alt K, nothing happened. Jaws
didn't come up speaking. I had to reboot in order to get Jaws 7.0 up again.
Have I done something wrong here?

Thanks a lot

Jason

running really hard and then a blue screen appears and the whole thing
automatically shuts down. Please do not reply to this email because it will
just make the problem worse. If any of you have any questions or

2007-02-11 Thread Ricque

Hi Jason,
Try this when making your hotkey, it always works for me.
After assigning your hotkey, tab to the apply button, and spacebar it.
Next, tab to the shortcut key field to make sure your assignment has been
saved, then tab to the okay button, and spacebar that.

Just tab through and make the hot key, without going back over it, and not
hitting the Apply button; or, use narrator while making the hot key.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws crashing when saving to A drive

2007-02-11 Thread Flor Lynch
No, a reinstall does not of itself use up one of your activations. Your
Internet activation or floppy authorized key remain on your hard drive until
manually or provisionally removed by you or if (in the case of ILM) some
hardware change is made to the computer. If installing on a new machine, then
a new activation is used there. There may come a time when future JAWS will
not recognise the floppy authorization as valid, I would suppose.

  Hi Flor,
yes I think you might be right. I will however, try a repair on Jaws first,
just incase I might be lucky. If that doesn't work, then I will do a reinstall.
I take it, that doing a reinstall will also use up one of my Jaws activations.
I only have 1 left, so will need to get those refreshed. When installing Jaws
7.0, I was told by my local dealer, to use the authorization disk from Jaws 6.0
to activate Jaws. He said that after Jaws 6.0, no new disks are being issued.
Does this mean that for all future Jaws versions, we have to use the same disk
over and over? I know that ILM has changed things a lot, but it seems a bit odd.
  Thanks a lot

I think you'l need to completely remove at least jaws7 from the laptop,
before re-installing it. (Repairing JAWS rarely works for such problems.)

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws crashing when saving to A drive

  Hi everyone,
I have been having trouble with my laptop at work. I have recently
installed Jaws 7.0 on to my laptop, which is running Windows ME. Because it is
windows ME, Jaws 7.0 is the highest version I can now go to on it. My problem
is, Jaws is running fairly well and I can save to the laptop hard-drive fine.
However, I am having trouble when saving to floppy disk on the A drive. What
happens, is I press F12 to save the file onto the A drive(I have just saved to
the C drive). I hear the floppy whirring like normal. Once it has finished
saving, Jaws crashes. This also happens, if someone else uses the touch-pad on
the laptop in order to save to the A drive. I have been told the error message,
says something about JFW encountering an error and had to shut-down. The
message also says something about braille something or other. I have never used
a braille display. To my knowledge, I have never installed any braille drivers
etc(apart from those which may come standard with the Jaws program). I have
tried different floppy disks too, but still the same problem happens. I am
hoping to get Jaws 8.0 up and going on the desktop computers at work. However,
the laptop is my own personal one and I naturally, would like to solve this
issue. I do have my desktop for my usual computing use. Like I said though,
would like to work this out. Thought I would ask here, before getting Acer(who
are the manufacturer) to have a look at the A drive, incase it is faulty.
Look forward to hearing from you
  Jason

[JAWS-Users] new footer message

2007-02-11 Thread David Ferrin

I've just changed the footer message but only very slightly. The reason is
so for those folks who wish to contact any of the four of us privately about
list business there's only going to be a single central point for the
address. This just means that if I ever need to change the moderating team
address it will be seamless for all of you good people. What I've done is
place a link at the bottom of every message to the contact form on the web
site for you to fill out. It's a learning process and I wish it would have
occurred to me earlier but no matter. The purpose of this is so once you
get accustomed to contacting us in this manner it shouldn't ever change
again. Sorry for giving you more work but consider how much I've given
myself already this morning, just kidding.

I beleive that Ken Stewart, Michael Byminington and others on the
Environmental Committee have been working diligently along with others on
the quiet car issue. But unfortunately much of that work and where we
 are
going on the issue doesn't seem to filter down to the membership.

This and other unfortunate lapses in communications leads to a wide
 variety
of problems including an inability to mobilize membership around an
 important issue.

These folks and many others do fine work but again if not effectively
communicated to the membership there can be an will be problems to say the
 least.

 Any suggestions?

[JAWS-Users] Tips and Tricks?

2007-02-11 Thread rich hamel

I have XP and JAWS 6.0.
I was following the tips and Tricks suggestions under the PC maintenance
heading.
When I performed the Check Disc , heading number 3, I only put in the edit
field chkdsk.
When I hit enter, the function seemed to start right away without giving
me the option to re-start.

After reviewing the instructions I noticed that I should have put in the
edit field chkdsk/f.
When I tried to perform the instructions this way, I got a dialogue that
said, that file can not be found.

My question is; should I have used the /F?
Did I screw up anything the first way I performed this action?

Thank you for any help.

Rich

Try putting a space between the chkdsk and the /f.

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tips and Tricks?

I have XP and JAWS 6.0.
I was following the tips and Tricks suggestions under the PC
 maintenance heading.
When I performed the Check Disc , heading number 3, I only put in
 the edit field chkdsk.
When I hit enter, the function seemed to start right away without
giving me the option to re-start.

After reviewing the instructions I noticed that I should have put in
 the edit field chkdsk/f.
When I tried to perform the instructions this way, I got a dialogue
that said, that file can not be found.

My question is; should I have used the /F?
Did I screw up anything the first way I performed this action?

 Thank you for any help.

 Rich

In the run dialogue open the context menu on the item you want to delete,
shift+f10 or the applications key, and arrow to then enter cut or delete. I
think that will work.

That worked.

By the way, how can I delete the incorrect command in the run section?
I tried selecting the choice and then hit delete, but that did not work.

Thanks again.

You might get a better answer on Rick's blind computer users list, but I use
an external USB turtle beach myself.

Good evening,

Need some quick advice. I have on board sound in my Acer computer and the
chip or whatever went bad on the board last night thus NO SOUND. I have
available slots to add a sound card. What good basic ones are folks using?
I also listen to music and have a great speaker system complete with
subwoofer so I'd like something decent but not top of the line. It has been
years since I've used one but I remember Soundblaster used to be good.

Is there any other options like an external sound device that could be used
and plugged into a USB port? If so would this enable all sound from
computer including CD et to go through it?

thanks folks (using a spare computer in the house to do this)
Al

I have found that, though the options are available, it doesn't work.
Clearling the start menu, in Settings Taskbar customize start menu Start
Menu Clear Button, clears the run dialog and the documents submenu. Or you
can delete your History file which would delete the run dialogue. Clearing
the start menu, as above, does not rid of the programs on your start menu.
