[JAWS-Users] Re: forms mode question

2007-05-21 Thread David A Ferrin

In most cases it's not really a jaws issue so far as that goes. It has to do
with the authoring practices of the web designer who setup the page. I know
it is frustrating but often enough that is our lot in life. The main thing
is that you know the work around to employ.

Hello everyone,
I was on the bmg music web site, and I wanted to fill out the form to join
the club. I went into forms mode so that I could type the information into
the edit boxes. For example where I needed to type in my first name jaws
just says edit. I tabbed through all of the edit boxes and it just says
edit. I went out of forms mode and looked around on the page, and then jaws
would read first name, last name, mailing address etc. It is very
frustrating to have to go in and out of forms mode just to get something
filled out. Is there any way to get jaws to read this information while I'm
in forms mode? I hope I have explained this well enough, so you all will
understand what I'm trying too do. I am running jaws 6.0, and I have
windows XP home. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Take care,
Lisa

[JAWS-Users] Re: Slightly OT: Google groups issue

2007-05-21 Thread Alma

Hi David,

Yes, it does look like I'm able to post and receive messages again. That's
great! Many thanks to the night moderator for helping with this!

My 'owner' address doesn't work either, but for the longest time, I thought
maybe I had done something wrong when setting up the group initially. It's
good to know that the error wasn't on my end.

Personally, I wouldn't blame you if you did decide to use your server for
the list. You're very right when you say that complaining to google groups
wouldn't do any good.

I will say, though, that I've had my court reporters group since January,
and, for the most part, it works wonderfully.

If running the list on your server would make moderating it easier, or if
you could get problems resolved more quickly by running it there, then
perhaps that's the best solution.

Looks like the night shift beat me to this one already, that's good. FYI
there is a contact form on the web site right on the main page so that
anybody can reach all of us at once. Unfortunately the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] address doesn't work even though
google claims it does. This has been a problem since we got here so far as
that goes. I had hoped that problems like that along with several others
would have been taken care of by now, obviously not though.

Since I have everybody's attention I might as well bring you all up to
 date
on the list's future possible home.

It's not going back to Yahoo or most certainly not over to free lists for
that matter. Now if it stays here has not been decided as of yet. The
possible alternative is moving it over to my own server and using the mail
man program that I recently purchased the right to use. We're still in the
beta cycle for almost a week now, and I must say it is seemingly going
 along
very well. The list if we do that will still remain free for the membership
but the service will not be as such. The bright side to that is if it goes
south for any reason I can say something. Think about it, there's not much
you can say to a company when their free service isn't working well for
 you.
The other thing is the program is included with the unlimited web package
that I got recently since much to my surprise this thing has really caught
on and the site has grown. Also before anybody considers asking at all no
 I
am not in any way shape or form asking for help in this matter. Consider
 it
my contribution to the blindness community.

 Hi everyone,

I have been a member of this group for a while now and suddenly stopped
 receiving the messages.  I am still able to read them on the website;
however, I would like to be able to receive individual emails with the
 messages, also.

I belong to other lists on google groups, and several people have found
 that
unsubscribing and resubscribing seemed to work for them. I have done that
 several times, to no avail.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what I might be able to do, I would
appreciate them. I would appreciate it if people would respond privately
 so
as not to clutter up the list, especially because I'm unable to receive
 list
 messages for whatever reason.

 My email address is:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
. Thanks, and I apologize to the list moderators if this is considered an
off topic message; I only posted it so that I might be able to once again
contribute here. I did try sending a message to the owner address and got
it back, so I did post this publicly as a last resort.

[JAWS-Users] Re: forms mode question

2007-05-21 Thread Ricque

Hi Lisa,
I too, had this same problem about 3 years ago when I signed up with BMG
Music.
As David and Alma already said, it is the way the webpage was written.
I haven't tried this, but I am wondering if custom labels can be applied
here.
Of course, in this particular case, once you've filled the form out, you
won't have to do it again.
The site is very Jaws friendly, and I have set a few place markers to
navigate it more quickly.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] forms mode question

Take care,
Lisa

[JAWS-Users] Re: forms mode question

2007-05-21 Thread Job Hunter
Hi Lisa:

This is a very common problem encountered by screen reader users, if the form
is not coded with the proper HTML labeling techniques.

What I usually do when I come across these issues with any web site that I find
difficult or cumbersome to use:

Find the link to send feedback or contact the webmaster. I then pen a polite
message, explaining to the webmaster that I am a blind user, accessing their
site using a screen reader. I describe the problem(s) that I encountered on
their site and suggest possible ways to eliminate the problem for future screen
reader users. I also include a link to the w3c.org site, which is a fantastic
resource for web developers who want to ensure that their sites are accessible.

I also offer any assistance that I can provide in testing the changes that they
might make to improve the situation. Most of the time, I get no response, but
on rare occasions, I do get a reply, stating that they never considered that a
blind person would be accessing their site and that they will make every effort
to make the suggested changes. Those messages make me feel good. In any case,
I believe that the more of us who take the time to let web site owners know
that screen reader users are using their sites, the more likely the chance that
they will take accessibility and usability into consideration when making
changes to their site.

This is often the case, so that, many times on Web pages, it is better to
enter Forms mode only briefly before exiting it and reading on to the next
edit, and entering again, etc. Just hit the PC cursor to leave forms Mode.

No, because you already have outlook express on your system. Pretty much
 it
has come bundled with windows more or less for a long time. Look down
 toward
the bottom of your programs menu and you will find it. If you are still
interested in the executable file name it is msimn.exe

The scripts for skype I have up on the site do actually install themselves
in to the proper directory. If you have version 2.5 or older then download
the first set of scripts. Obviously if you are using 3.0 or newer then
download the second set of scripts.

No, because you already have outlook express on your system. Pretty much
 it
has come bundled with windows more or less for a long time. Look down
 toward
the bottom of your programs menu and you will find it. If you are still
interested in the executable file name it is msimn.exe

[JAWS-Users] Re: outlook express

2007-05-21 Thread Bill Gallik

Patty,

Outlook Express is a component of Internet Explorer and not of Office.
Microsoft Outlook is the email component of Office and is remarkably
different from Outlook Express.

What you might want to try doing is to open Internet Explorer, bring up the
Tools menu and select options. Once in that multi-tab dialog move to the
Programs tab and under email setting check the list to verify if Outlook
Express has been installed with your version of IE. If it has highlight it
and then hit the OK button as that will set Outlook Express as your default
email client.

If Outlook Express does not appear in the list then you'll need to download
and install it from the Microsoft web site.

And by the way, when you go to the Run item in the Start Menu you need to
type in:

MSIMN.EXE

as that is the executable for Outlook Express.

[JAWS-Users] Re: outlook express

2007-05-21 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Patti,

What happens when you press the start button, then P for programs, then O
for Outlook Express?

If my guess is right, Outlook Express does not have a sub-menu to it, so you
would not find it in the Microsoft sub-menu, and it should be right after
all the sub-menus.

As David suggested, press the start menu key, press P for programs, then up
arrow, and keep up arrowing until you get to the programs beginning with the
letter O. Obviously, if you pass into the programs that start with the
letter N, then obviously the Outlook Express shortcut has been removed from
your start menu.

I'll have to get back to you when I remember how to put that shortcut back
in your start menu, but you can also do what David suggested, and see if
running the program name he pointed out will start Outlook Express. If it
does start up, all you have to do is put a shortcut icon on your desktop or
start menu, which ever you prefer, and you're good to go.

Let us know what happens.

Victor

  Take care,
  Lisa

Hi,

To answer your question, scripts are saved in c:\documents and settings\your

also the folder that you should save your scripts in if you want to
customize Jaws settings for your user account.

Now my problem is how do I get an icon on the desktop.
All I can do to open up outlook express is through the run file.
I tried to find it in the program file, but no luck there, so I tried
through the hard drive no luck there.

[JAWS-Users] getting rid of the top and boddem of windo message in OE Using Jaws 7.0

2007-05-21 Thread Mich
Hi all. I asked this question earlier today on some of these lists. I did get a
ancer but there is one problem. The problem is that I can't seem to do all of
the steps that are listed in the instructions to tern off the top of window and
bottom of window and alert thing in jaws. The reason for this is because it is
talking about jaws 8.0 and not 7.0 witch is the one that I have. I can't seem
to do the following step in the instructions 6. Locate the Default.jcf file. I
go and do that 8. Look for the line containing:
[options] but I can't find the word. Can some one please help me out? What is
happening is that I want to get rid of that stupid ding sound when you get to
the top or bottom of a window or in OE. By doing this I am hoping to stop it
saying top of window and bottom of window when I am some times arrowing through
the messages in OE Jaws will say top of window and bottom of window and then
that is it it won't say anything elts there for forcing me to un load jaws and
then re load jaws. Some times when this happens and I re load jaws all that
jaws will do after this is just make that stupid ding sound and that is it. I
find this personally quite annoying. Many thanks for any help that any one can
help me with. from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada.

I did an audio tutorial last year answering this exact question. Hop on over

to that page and give it a listen. Trust me it will answer all of your
questions regarding where scripts are supposed to go.

So, is that where scripts are supposed to reside? And, where precisely is
the folder located?

Hi,
I know I am replying to myself. If you are not using Jaws 8.0, then if you
are using Jaws 7 or 7.1 or 8.0, then you can just substitute 8.0 in the
location (for example c:\documents and settings\your username\Application
data\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\7.0.)

Jeff

Hi,
I am not David, but I think I can help.
To answer your question, scripts are saved in c:\documents and settings\your
username\Application data\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\8.0\settings\enu. This is
also the folder that you should save your scripts in if you want to
customize Jaws settings for your user account.

Jeff
