[JAWS-Users] Re: Acer laptop question

2007-03-10 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hello,

I also have a laptop, and there is, in your system tray, or should be, a way
to double click on the touch pad, mine is called synaptics pointing device.
Then control tab to the device settings page and uncheck it, then tab to
okay and space. If you need to reenable it, it's very easy. Just go back
to the same place and re enable it. I have mine off most of the time, but
when I need help with something, I turn it back on.

Good luck,

Lois

Hi Doug,
I'm using an Acer Travelmate too, all be it 7 years old smile. I have only
really started using it more lately, while I get Jaws put onto the desktops
at work. I have Jaws on my home desktop, so haven't really needed to use the
laptop much until recently. The mouse keys you refer to, are referred to as
the touch-pad. Like you, I sometimes touch them accidently with my wrist.
There is a way of turning it on and off. A family member found it in the
documentation I got with it. I think it is something like pressing the FN
key followed by F8. I am not certain of this though. I haven't tried turning
mine off yet, as I have had problems with my unit crashing with Jaws. I
therefore need someone to use the touchpad in order to clear the error
message and restart the laptop for me. I am thinking of getting an external
mouse to plug in and turn off the touchpad. I might be wrong with which
function key you press though. Give it a try. If you still have no luck, let
me know and I will try and get a family member to check my documentation
again for you. My touchpad is very sensitive. Everyone who uses it complain
about it. I have had people try and slow it down for me too.
Hope this helps.
Good luck
Jason

Hope this isn't too much off topic but.
I'm using an Acer Travelmate laptop with a bunch of mouse controls just
 below the main keyboard.
Unfortunately, when resting my palms on the kdyboard, the mouse controls
 get
 activated.
Is there a way of disabling that mouse pad arrangement??
 Thanks in advance.

Hi Lisa,

Go to your view menu by alt+t then enter on sort by, and enter on from.
This will enable you to use first letter navigation. This should help some.

Hello everyone,
I use outlook express for my email, and I deleted an email on accident that
I wanted to keep. Is there a quick and easy jaws key stroke to find that
email without looking through lots of deleted emails in my deleted items
folder? I hope there is a way because that is just too much email to look
through. I am running jaws 6, and I have windows XP home. Thanks in

3. Go to the auto-play tab, and using the tab key, and the arrow keys,
set the drive to respond to your liking for each type of cd inserted into

Lois,
You will need to go to the preferences in Winamp, control p, and to file
types and then tab to, check, launch Winamp for audio cd's, then tab to
close.

Hi Rick,

I have been trying to get my audio cds to play in winamp, too. I have the
box checked in preferences, but when I got to properties, winamp isn't a
choice. I see two other media players and open to view in windows explorer.

Do you have any idea why winamp isn't there and how I can get it back. It
does automaticaly play anything that's on my computer, just not cds.

Thanks,

Hi Tammy,
Try this:
1. From Windows Explorer, highlight your cd drive.
2. Next, press alt + enter for the properties.
3. Go to the auto-play tab, and using the tab key, and the arrow keys,
set the drive to respond to your liking for each type of cd inserted into
the drive.
4. After making each selection, tab to the apply button, and spacebar that.
5. When you are done, activate the okay button.
You are done.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Last question for the night

2006-12-27 Thread Lois Butterfield

For now, I have it set up so that it opens the files in windows exp. so I
can choose a track and go to the context menu and winamp is the first thing
there. When I enter it plays. I don't get to say perform the same action
every time. I'm using 5.32. And I looked in file types and didn't see what
you were talking about. I did see something about show winamp in context
folder in windows exp. and that is checked.

Hi Lois,
Let's try one thing first, and then we'll go to the other.
Try checking this:
1. In WinAmp preferences, go to the file types.
2. tab until you come to setup directory context menus, and make sure it is
checked.
3. Save your settings, and exit WinAmp.
4. Now, go to the folder where your audio files are, and place your cursor
on one.
5. Next, open the file, or context menu, and see if Winamp appears in the
menu.

Let me know the results, and the version of WinAmp you are using,
and I'll try to duplicate your problem here.

Lois,
You can go to, run, and type in, %temp% and press enter.
This will load all of your temp files.
It doesn't hurt a thing to dlete all of them. I do this about once a week.
Just be sure all applications are shut down before you attempt to delete
them or some of them won't delete.
Of course you can keep Jaws runnning.

I found this in the, What's New in Jaws 7.1.

. Pressing the CTRL key now stops speech immediately, even when using a slow
speech rate. In order to facilitate this change, the Reading Interrupt check
box was removed from the User Options dialog box in Configuration Manager.
Reading interrupt is always enabled now and cannot be disabled.

Anyway, did anyone respond to my question?

I've been looking and just can't find the reading interrupt selection

user options of the configuration manager. Strange.

-Original Message-

Hi folks. I've noticed something odd. In JAWS 8, there is no longer a
choice to check reading interrupt in the user options in the configuration
manager. The typing interrupt is still there, but not reading.

I wonder if this could be why I'm finding it difficult to silence JAWS by
hitting a key.

For example, when I tab from link to link on a Web page, it will speak the
entire link before the next one, and the next. I can't tell what link I'm
on unless I sit and wait for JAWS to finish rambling on. And with so many
things, JAWS won't stop talking when I hit keys. It completes saying the
text, the title of a program, etc, and is determined to finish its sentence.
It's very confusing and aggravating.
I Always had typing and reading interrupt checked with earlier versions of
JAWS to avoid this annoyance. But now in this version I can't find the
reading interrupt so I can check it.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, do you know where the reading
interrupt is, or at least how to stop JAWS from rambling on?
It's on a brand new super fast computer, so speed definitely isn't' an
issue.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Re: the scripts page is already up

2006-12-11 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi David,

Speaking of the cu cu clock script, I've got them working and really enjoy
the clock. Thank you for having it there for us.

What I've done was remove the scripts and instructional material regarding
them and placed all of it on a separate page. This is in the hope to avoid
confusion like what occurred last week pertaining to the cu cu clock scripts
thread. It's not magic just a little word processing and attention to
detail. Other than that nothing has changed as of yet, but it will.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts

2006-12-08 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi,

You can read the list of problems and select the ones you want fixed. Then
tab to fix selected problems, or you can tab to the select all problems and
space on that, then tab to fix selected problems and space on that. I
always select all problems and let it fix them all. It seems always to find
plenty of them.

I apologize if you have already figured all this out. It took me a couple
times to get it right.

Take care,
Lois

I was using jaws 7.10 and right after I posted this I forgot I hadn't
compiled the scripts so I did that weather I needed to or not..
I read what was suggested to do from the hints/tricks page and tried to
follow it but that is what happened for me. It did find 119 problems but
just not knowing what was happening if it was done or what was bit
confusing..

Maybe next time it'll work better.

It all depends on what version of jaws you are using at any given time.

I need advice please if I installed the jaws scripts into the correct
version of jaws which I put them into 7.10 and am wondering if I should
 have
 placed them into jaws 7.0?
When I ran the program I kept loosing the window I could route jaws to
 read
but just doing the say line I would hear blank and when I did the title it
said the usual no window is active..
When I went to the desktop and alt tab then the reg scrub window appeared.
So I'm wondering if this is the way this works or if the scripts were
 placed
 into the wrong jaws version?

 Hailley

[JAWS-Users] Re: temp files

2006-12-06 Thread Lois Butterfield

I did this and there were two files I couldn't delete. One is ~nsu.temp.
Jaws said can't read file, unable to delete, and the other when I pressed
delete, jaws was silent. I wasn't able to copy and paste them either. Am I
in serious trouble?

Thanks,
Lois

Thanks for posting this tip, I've used it myself but haven't thought of it
for quite a while. This is a keeper.

I use the following on my 98 machine, will it work also on a XP machine?

Can I delete tmp files?

I've given this hint before and it's one of the really useful ones
that I've
picked up over the years. Open the Find Files utility and search for:

*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*

Note that the items are separated by a comma and no spaces. Also,
note that
the last item is preceded by a tilde and if you omit this, you'll get
hits
on every file in your computer, which you most definitely do _not_
want to
do.

Run this search and when it completes, press Control+A to select all,
then
the delete key and answer Y to the prompt asking if it's okay to
delete
everything. Then comes the really good part. Press Alt+F while still
in
the Find Files utility and save the search to your Desktop. From now
on,
you can run it regularly to clean up your disk. I've used this for a
couple
of years with no problems.
The second thing I would advise is to download and run ad-aware and
get rid
of all of that spy crap in your computer.

No problem Lois. As I said, it doesn't work at all the same in XP as it did
in 9X. That tip is at least six or eight years old and should be considered
as no longer being of much value.
