[JAWS-Users] Kill JAWS
I am running Windows XP Pro and Office 2007. I have an issue with outlook, in that it crashes periodically, and when it does, it takes speech with it. This behavior is screen reader independent. The computer itself has not crashed, just Outlook and speech. Now, if you can get speech back, you can interact with the Outlook error reporting dialogue, and close and restart Outlook. The normal command, i. e. INSERT-F4 does not work in this situation. Now, Window Eyes has a Kill script that allows you to use a hotkey that will unload Window Eyes from memory, and then you can use your normal hotkey, usually CONTROL-ALT-W, to start WE again. Does JAWS have a similar key sequence that will unload it from memory when INSERT-F4 does not work? Re: [JAWS-Users] Kill JAWS
There has been a JAWS hotkey to unload JAWS when things go wrong since version 8. It is JAWSKey (Insert for desktop keyboard layouts, CapsLock for laptop) + Windows + F4. There will be no confirmation dialog. Sometimes it produces a system beep on my computer. This also dumps the memory to a file that FS support may ask you to email to them. From the JAWS 8 What's New: If a total loss of speech occurs, it is difficult to recover JAWS without rebooting the computer. However, a reboot provides no diagnostic information to assist Freedom Scientific in researching the underlying problem. INSERT+WINDOWS Key+F4 is a new JAWS keystroke for emergency recovery. The new keystroke closes JAWS, terminates all related processes, and creates a memory dump file. The diagnostic information can be used to assist Technical Support. (Note: The keystroke will not work at the Windows Log In screen.) After issuing this command, you can restart JAWS to regain speech. The memory dump file is saved to the Settings folder. To locate the file, do the following: Press CTRL+ESC to open the Start menu. Choose Programs. Choose JAWS 8.0, Explore JAWS, and then Explore My Settings. This opens the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\Settings\ENU. Press the BACKSPACE key to navigate to the Settings folder. Select the JAWSMemDmp folder and press ENTER. The files in this folder are identified by the JAWS version and build number. Chris, I tried this and it does work. Just a FYI to folks, however, I put my computer in training mode to hear if JAWS announced this keystroke did this and it did it even in training mode which I did not expect. I heard the default beep through my CPU. Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer keeps failing and shutting down, any ideas to help?
did you also disable flash, because it has recently become a hog in ram and some sites don't work nice with out the latest flash. you can go to the adobe site to get the removal tool and run it. If you de side to update it remove it and then update. That also corrupt its to install over itself. At 09:00 AM 5/17/2010, you wrote: Page after page Internet Explorer fails. Often it is the error on Web page, sometimes it seems to be nothing, sometimes it happens with a redirect to the pay for pages of a shopping site.It is often difficult to know what is wrong because jaws locks up. If left long enough Jaws may come back, I have though left it over night and had to power down and restart to get it back, I don't know what happens there. If I am really patient when Jaws goes quiet and remember not to touch a navigation key it is more likely to come back and tell me that things went south due to an error on the page. I haven't updated from Jaws 9 on this machine running vista and IE 8. a bunch. Jaws 7 on my wife's XP Home machine and IE 7 seems to handle the same pages well. I notice a load of private browsing and other features in this new Internet Explorer I wonder if that is the issue. I went to the control panel to see if I could uninstall IE 8, a method which used to return to an earlier version of IE but that doesn't seem to be there under Vista. Does anyone know if this is an Internet Explorer new feature, some odd combination with Jaws, both, neither, some setting I haven't stumbled on or any other idea how to improve this behaviour? This just is not useful. One way or another I have purchased at least 5 full Jaws packages over the past decade along with several SMAs, it is frustrating not to have a seamless browsing experience. Any information, advice or solution will be most appreciated.
