[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder

2010-06-01 Thread Moderator
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all know
works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or
want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I
am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how
new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is
quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than
first.
So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck
then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current
dilemma.
Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if
there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with
JAWS

is perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest
you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also
any news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be
posted

to the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an
attachment

but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 450
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that
are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you
will
find the group web address along with some other relevant information
pertaining to contacting the management team ETC.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your
account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and
follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after
receiving
a number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be
a member of the list and remove your email address.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should
only

post in the following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be
short and to the point without including any member names.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do
not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at
the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and

every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with
unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly
please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help
dying

kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.

No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

[JAWS-Users] Check for updates question

2010-06-01 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Hello all,
I tried to update my copy of JAWS 11.0.1430 to the latest build, but it
said I already have the latest JAWS version. Anyone else noticed this?

Of course I can download the full build, but thought I would ask on here.

[JAWS-Users] note to the membership

2010-06-01 Thread David Ferrin
Some of you are probably noticing a lag in your messages getting posted at
least the new members might. This is because all new subscribers are
automatically placed on moderated status and their messages must be approved
manually by any of the 3 of us who manage this monster of a list as it is
around 520 members at this point. The reason for these delays is because
traffic has been quite heavy as of late and we don't sit at our keyboards all
day reading emails. I'm just telling you this simply as a FYI kind of a deal is
all and thank you for your patients. Believe me folks I never would have
thought almost 5 years ago that this thing would still be going and have grown
to such a gigantic size. The nice thing is that there are enough people of all
skill levels on here to help each other out and I do not need to be posting as
much as I did in the beginning. This allows me to have more time to do the
background stuff which can some times seem overwhelming to Bob, Rick and me.
Thank you for making what I started out as a hobby and turned in to something
beneficial and productive. No need to reply to this as I just finished reading
almost 80 messages before breakfast.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting cookies IE8

2010-06-01 Thread Steve

Mike,

1. Open Internet Explorer options. Do this either from the internet
Options aplet in the control panel, or by opening IE, then pressing alt-t
for tools, o for options.

2. Control tab to the privacy settings, and hit enter on the Advanced
button.

3. You will receive a dialog on this setting controls how cookies are
handled in the internet zone. The first checkbox is Override Automatic
Cookie Handling. IE will handle cookies automatically depending on how you
have your security slider configured for the internet security zone. To
override these settings, check the box.

4. Now, you will be presented with two groups of radio buttons. The first
group is for first-party cookies. The second group are for third-party
cookies. You can tell this by looking with your Jaws cursor, as Jaws at
least in my version combinations using IE8 and prior IE7 and 6 did not read
this directly. Your choices in each case are identical: Accept, Block, or
Prompt.

5. After that, you come to a checkbox to allow session cookies.

Session Cookies are a good example about why I disagreed with Ken D and his
strong opinion about cookies being useless and dangerous. Webpages have no
memories. A user going from page to page will be treated by the website as a
completely new visitor. Session cookies enable the website you are visiting
to keep track of your movement from page to page so you don't get asked for
the same information you've already given to the site. Cookies allow you to
proceed through many pages of a site quickly and easily without having to
authenticate or reprocess each new area you visit. The most common example
of this functionality is the shopping cart feature of any e-commerce site.
When you visit one page of a catalog and select some items, the session
cookie remembers your selection so your shopping cart will have the items
you selected when you are ready to check out. Without session cookies, if
you click CHECKOUT, the new page does not recognize your past activities on
prior pages and your shopping cart will always be empty.

6. When you configured everything to your liking, click ok twice.

Ken,

In all due respect, not sure that is the definitive answer, only your
opinion.

Since one can configure IE or to a lesser extent Firefox, cookies aren't
the

dreaded monsters you make them out to be. I have third-party cookies
disabled.

However, there are advantages to enabling cookies. First, you need to
enable them for certain websites to function properly. Second, cookies
allow certain websites to keep track of your recent activity: i.e. news
sites can show you your preferred articles, shopping cites can preserve
your

shopping cart and/or recently viewed items.

In summary, there is no need to block all cookies. Doing so will make the
browsing experience more inconvenient. Having enough knowledge to
properly

configure your browser and running properly security i.e. anti-virus and
anti-spyware programs will allow one to browse safely and still retain the
convenience afforded by the proper use of cookies.

Here is the definitive answer.
Cookies are supposed to speed up accessing their site.
For me, without their cookie on my computer, it takes about one half a
second.
Every time you visit a new website, their cookie is placed on your
computer.
I don't give a damn about a fraction of a second, in my lifetime.
Delete the crap, you will never miss the speed up.
And you can relax and feel secure about someone's potential snooping
around in your computer
It is really a trivial issue; no matter what you do. Worry about your
next

hang nail.

Hi Deb;

Try the steps below for the most thorough way of repairing Jaws. There are
2 different sets of steps.

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.

1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into
the main root of the C drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of J11.0.1447-32bit.exe into the main
root of the C drive. To open the main root of the C drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the C drive open.

2. With the Jaws .exe pasted into the C drive, highlight the .exe
, and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control
+ C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field,
+ and
press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.

What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.

3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type c:\ , Ccolon backslash,
without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title,
press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in
the following /type repair
without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line of text
should look / read like.

c:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces,
Forward back slashes text and Jaws version. press the home key to go to
the front of the title and press enter to start the repair.

A 2nd way to do the same thing.

Hello Jim,

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the
installation:

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.

3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.

4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open colon edit combo, press
the end key and then press spacebar.

5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.

6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

7. Follow the prompts.

Take care.

  Wayne,
It depends partly on what you want to do with this software.
Optasia Ministry has 14 popular versions of the Bible in a form
 that
works very well with JAWS on your desktop computer, as well as
  notetakers.
These Bibles are HTML files, that you store on your hard drive,
 and they
run in Internet Explorer. After setting up the Bible as one of
 your
favorites, you will have easy access to links to books, chapters
 and
  verses of the Bible.
You will be able to search for specific words and phrases as
 well.
So if you want a Bible to read, one in which it is easy to find a
passage, these will work well for you.
We have these same 14 versions in a form that is designed for the
 Victor
  Stream Reader.
These same versions are also available in rtf format, for basic
 access
  with any screen reader.
The Optasia Bibles do not have links to other study resources.
However, if you receive the entire Optasia Library, you will be
 able to
make use of a variety of good commentaries, as well as have access
 to
reading material on a variety of topics related to the Bible. We
 have
about 800 books in the library now, and songs and worship
 resources as
  well.
If you want to see the complete listing of the Optasia Library,
 you can
  visit our website:
  www.optasiaministry.org
We send out all our materials free, since the ministry depends on
  donations for its support.
You may email me directly if you have questions, or want a copy of
 a
  Bible or the library.

  Tom

Hi Deb;

From:
Brian Lee

Hello Jim,

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64
bit.exe

After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the
installation:

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.

3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.

4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open colon edit combo, press
the end key and then press spacebar.

5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.

6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

7. Follow the prompts.

Take care.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Mike,

Worry about your
 next
 hang nail.

Some of you are probably noticing a lag in your messages getting posted at
least the new members might. This is because all new subscribers are
automatically placed on moderated status and their messages must be
approved manually by any of the 3 of us who manage this monster of a list
as it is around 520 members at this point. The reason for these delays is
because traffic has been quite heavy as of late and we don't sit at our
keyboards all day reading emails. I'm just telling you this simply as a
FYI kind of a deal is all and thank you for your patients. Believe me
folks I never would have thought almost 5 years ago that this thing would
still be going and have grown to such a gigantic size. The nice thing is
that there are enough people of all skill levels on here to help each
other out and I do not need to be posting as much as I did in the

which can some times seem overwhelming to Bob, Rick and me. Thank you for

Hi Deb;

Hello Jim,

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64

Take care.

Hi Deb;

I admire your ability and experience but sometimes you forget that many of
us are not nearly as capable as you are when it comes to manipulating these

If there is a document which has been written which specifically deals with

You started us off by indicating that the place to make such changes would
be in Personalizing Windows and that's fine, but where do we go from

Any help in making Windows 7 behave more comfortably with Jaws 11 would be

Ok, I personally set the theme to Windows Classic. Here is how you do
this. Note this is from memory.
1. Right click the desktop, and choose personalize. Make sure nothing is
selected first with ctrl+space.
2. Using all four of you arrow keys, find Windows Classic in the theme
gallery, and press enter. Windows 7 will play the sound when you log on,
indicating the theme was changed successfully.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving Jaws Dictionary items

2010-06-01 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Dixie,

After reading your message, I am not sure if you want to move the entries in
your Outlook Express JAWS 10 dictionary file to your JAWS 11 Outlook Express
JAWS dictionary file or JAWS 11 Microsoft Outlook JAWS dictionary file. I
will give steps for each scenario. Before giving the steps let me remind
you that if you want to have the same dictionary entries in Outlook Express
in a newer version of JAWS you can do so by using the JAWS merge utility.
The merge utility will not only merge your dictionary entries for the given
program but also will merge your JAWS configuration files, JAWS graphics
files, schemes, sounds, placemarkers and other personalized settings. You
don't want to use merge if you are just wanting your JAWS dictionary files
for Outlook Express to be merged. If you want to use the merge utility then
you can find the merge menu choice in the JAWS interface window and in the
utilities menu.

REPLACING OUTLOOK EXPRESS.JDF IN JAWS 11 WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS.JDF IN JAWS 10

There are two places to look for the Outlook Express.JDF file in each
version of JAWS. One of these two places is in explore my settings and
the other one is in Explore shared settings. You can access each of those
through the JAWS program group in the start menu.

1.Use Windows key to activate the Windows start menu.

2. Move focus into the all programs group. In XP you can press the
letter P while focus is in the start menu to move to the program groups. If
there is only one P in your start menu then focus will go directly into the
submenu. If there is more than one P in your start menu then press that
letter until you find the programs choice and use right arrow key to go into
the submenu. Press J until you find JAWS 10 and use right arrow and then
down arrow key into the JAWS 10 choices or press enter key. When the JAWS
10 choice is open press E to get to the explore JAWS choice and press enter
key to open that group of icons. Use down arrow and press enter key on the
explore my settings choice. If you use Vista or Windows 7 then after
pressing Windows key to move into the start menu use the down arrow key to
move off of the search box and then press the letter A to find the all
programs choice and press enter key. Use down arrow so that focus is off
the search box, press J until you get to JAWS 10, press enter key and then
press E to get to the explore JAWS choice and press enter key to open the
group of icons. Use down arrow key to move to the explore my settings
choice and press enter key.

3. Focus will be in a list of files and folders that apply to the
current user of Windows. Press the letter O until you find the Outlook
Express.JDF file. If you can type fairly quickly then instead of just
pressing O try typing O U T L and focus should go directly to the first icon
starting with the word outlook. Use down arrow key until you find the
Outlook Express.JDF file if there is one in this folder. Listen carefully
as there might also be an Outlook Express.JGF file, which is the JAWS
graphics file.

4., Press CTRL+C to copy the file to the clipboard.

5. If you found and copied an Outlook Express.JDF file in the explore
my settings folder then don't do this step but instead proceed to step 6.
If not then look for the file in the explore shared settings folder. Move
focus as mentioned above to the JAWS 10 program group and into the explore
JAWS settings icons. Use down arrow key past the explore my settings
choice to the explore shared settings choice and press enter key. This
folder has settings shared among all JAWS users on the Windows system. When
the explore shared settings is open find the Outlook Express.JDF file as
mentioned above and copy it to the clipboard.

6. Move focus back into the all programs menu but this time instead of
going to the JAWS 10 program group press J until you get to JAWS 11. Open
JAWS 11 as shown above and then open the explore my settings choice.
Paste the Outlook.JDF file into the folder. If Windows tells you that there
is already a file with that name and asks you to confirm that you want to
overwrite it then do so.

7. Move focus back to the JAWS 11 group and open the explore JAWS
choice. Use down arrow key to the explore shared settings icon and press
enter key.

8. Use CTRL+V to paste the copied file into this folder and overwrite
if asked to by Windows.

9. Close the explore shared settings folder using Alt+f4.

The above steps should replace the Outlook Express dictionary file in JAWS
11 with the one in JAWS 10.

REPLACING the MICROSOFT OUTLOOK JDF IN JAWS 11 WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS.JDF IN
JAWS 10

1.Start by following steps 1 through and including 5 above.

2. Move focus to the desktop by using Windows key with D and paste the
Outlook Express.JDF file to the desktop by using CTRL+V.

3. Browse into the explore my settings and

[JAWS-Users] Letter navigation in messages

2010-06-01 Thread wayne smith
Hello

I am having a problem with navigation in an e-mail document. In previous
versions of JAWS I could use letter navigation to go through Headings,
links, paragraphs just as in a web page. Now, with JAWS 11, IE 8 and
Windows 7 if I press a letter key it writes in the message field without
doing anything to the message. Can I turn on or off something to return to
the navigation capability? I have looked through menus with finding
anything.

There are two places to look for the Outlook Express.JDF file in each
version of JAWS. One of these two places is in explore my settings and
the other one is in Explore shared settings. You can access each of
those

through the JAWS program group in the start menu.
