[JAWS-Users] Adobe reader upgrade

2011-09-24 Thread Yankee Heart
I am using Adobe reader 8 with the latest updates. I keep getting error
messages and not all documents will read. What is the best version to use
with JAWS 11 or 12 and will it help with these error messages when I close
the program?

Thanks.

I don't know how new a version of Firefox, it is possible to interact

best.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting multiple columns or rows in Excel 2007

2011-09-24 Thread Alan Robbins
Greg

I remember when I was working a trick I did with Excel 2000
was to use ctrl G and then enter a column/row coordinate
(i.e. A5). What this accomplishes is it places the cursor
in the row and cell of a column I know was hidden. Even
though not visible on the screen the cursor would go there
and then I would select unhide. This could only unhide one
column at a time but you could play with the idea and see if
you could modify to meet your needs? Haven't tried in 2010
but most standard commands with the ctrl key have remained
consistent so far. The only one I miss and have to find out
the new one is in excel 2000 ctrl F2 used to read the
formula in a cell and in 2010 that key stroke has a
different function.

hope this helps

My problem is that I have multiple columns hidden in a
spread sheet, for
example columns B to p. So I want to unhide only column p.
How do I do
that? When I am on column q and hit shift left arrow and
select unhide
columns from the menu it unhides all the columns b-p. the
same happens if
when on column A and I hit shift right arrow and then select
unhide columns
all the columns from b to p get unhidden.

I am using Jaws 12.0.1170 on a windows 7 64 bit machine. I
cannot figure
out how to select multiple columns or rows to insert, or
unhide. For

I want to unhide

just column B and C I don't know how to do that. When I use
control+left
arrow to highlight column A to column E and then hit alt
h,o,u and select
unhide columns of course I unhide all the columns from B to
E, not just B
and C. Can anyone tell me how to just unhide the columns I

Re: [JAWS-Users] CAPTCHA

2011-09-24 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Ann Marie;

Well, I kind of use Firefox version 6.0. I say kind of, because I use it
very little. I mainly use it for solving Captcha's. I am running Jaws10
thru 13 for what little I use it, I have no complaints at all, for me
not to have anything to bitch about, is a minor miracle in itself! hahaha
hahaha hahaha

In all seriousness, I haven't had any problems with running Firefox versions
3.5.1, 3.6.15, or 6.0. Hope this helps. Take care.

Well I just did maintenance on my PC running Jaws 12 and XP Pro. I still
need to do a few more steps but needed to work on PC.
I notice that with FF one needs to type the entire URL name? Am I right on
that?
I tested freedom scientific because I figure their link would have all
accessibility stuff.
I control+o and typed Freedomscientific.com and link not found. I tried
several and then realized I need to precede link name with

http://www.freedomscientific.com
I went on other sites and Jaws was very clumbsy so I'd thought it could be a
mainntenance issue.
I did get Webvisum to work by typing alt+control+6 and Webvisum stated to
wait then infomation could be copied from clipboard. So FF6 worked for me
but I only need to use FF when I encounter a
CAPTCHA. But I'll keep working on learning FF because I know many who
prefer Firefox to IE.

Thanks again.

Hi Ann Marie;

With FF, use the keystroke, control + L, to open a new web page. Control +
O, is for opening files. Below are several notes that I have put together
that can be very helpful when using Firefox.

There is a summary of all the notes at the bottom of this reply.

Hi All,

When I am using IE type in a URL, I only have to type,
www.jaws-users.com,

but, when I am running Firefox, I have to type,
http://www.jaws-users.com.

Can anyone tell me if there is something I can check or uncheck in Firefox
that will put in the http:// for me automatically like IE does? All advice
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.
Mike

Hi Adrian,

Thank you very much for this very helpful information. I figured out what I
was doing wrong. I was pressing,Control + O, for webpages, instead of,
Control
+ L. For those who might not know what I am talking about. In Internett
Explorer when you want to open a new webpage you invoke the Control + o,
keystroke,
then type in the URL where you want to go press enter or, control + enter.
In Firefox you invoke the, Control + L, keystroke, then type in the URL you
want press enter or, control + enter. Invoking the Control + O, keystroke
in Firefox, is the keystroke for opening specific files. Thanks again, take
care.

Skip both the http and ww prefixes and press control-enter after you type
the website name. This works in Firefox only. I just checked with this
address, and it worked.

Hi Mike,

How are you doing?

Just wanted to let you know that in internet explorer, you do not need to
type in the www. when you open a new web site. An example of this is:
jaws-users.com

I learned this wen I was teaching JAWS. The student typed in the address
without the WWW. and I went to correct him and he had hit enter and the
computer went to the site.

Take care,
Kathy

From:
Don Marang
In both browsers I use a shortcut. Just type in the jaws-users
portion of the address (without the quotes) and hit Control + Enter.
This will prefix the necessary
http://www.;
and append the .com
portions of the address. This however, only works with ,.com addresses.
*Don Marang*

From:
Don Marang
I just press F6 to get to the address bar to enter a new address. This
works in IE and Firefox.

*Don Marang*

From:
Adrian Spratt
Hi, Mike.

That's right, but I think it works only if it's a commonly visited website
or one in your history. Let's see if I can summarize what we've discussed,
with some additional information that has come to mind.

1. Control-l brings up the edit field in which to type a Web address in both
IE and Firefox. Control-o does the same in IE but not FF. So using control-l
in both cases avoids confusion.

2. In Firefox, you can save yourself having to type the
http://www.
Prefix
and .com if you just write the Website name and press control-enter. This
shortcut works only for .com addresses.

3. In most cases, it isn't necessary to write
http://www.
Before the Website
address whether in IE or FF. However, it may be necessary to write www.
Before addresses that are rarely visited and/or aren't in your history.
Also, beware of addresses that don't begin http://, such as high security
websites.

Is that a fair summary?
Adrian

Hope this has helped. Take care.
Mike

Just wanted to let you know that in internet explorer, you do not need to

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting multiple columns or rows in Excel 2007

2011-09-24 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Greg,

I am using Excel 2010 but I think the following information should be
relevant to Excel 2007 as well.

To hide a single column simply have the cursor in the column to hide and use
CTRL+0. To hide a single row place the cursor in the row and use CTRL+9.
To make a single column not hidden use shift with right or left arrow keys
to select the columns to the left and right of the hidden column and then
use Shift+CTRL+0. To make a row not hidden use shift+up or down arrow key
to select the row above or row blow the hidden row and use CTRL+Shift+9. To
hide multiple columns going right, use shift with right arrow key to select
the columns to hide and then use CTRL+0. To hide multiple columns to the
left, use shift with left arrow key to select the desired columns and then
use CTRL+0. To unhide the multiple columns use shift with right or left
arrow key to select the columns to show (starting on one that is not hidden)
and then use ShiftCTRL+0. To hide multiple rows, use shift with down arrow
or up arrow key to select the rows to be hidden and then use CTRL+9. To
show the rows again, use Shift with up or down arrow key (selecting the row
above and row below the hidden rows) and use shift+CTRL+9 to show the rows.

If the cursor is in a column on the left and you cannot use shift with left
arrow to select hidden columns to the left, you can select the whole row by
using shift+spacebar and then use CTRL+Shift+0 to make all columns visible.
If you have hidden rows then you can use CTRL+spacebar to select a whole
column and use CTRL+shift+9 to make the whole row visible.

The above will work for contiguous rows or columns, but you might need a
macro to handle noncontiguous rows or columns.

Take care.

2011-09-24 Thread Brian Lee
Greg,

I should also mention that if you do not use merged cells, you can select
non contiguously and hide individual rows or columns. For example, if you
want to hide row 10 and row 20, and if your data goes from column A to G,
you could use the Go To box. Press CTRL+G to bring up the Go To box. Type
in A10:g10,a20:g20 and press enter key. You can then hide those rows using
CTRL+9 or unhide them using CTRL+Shift+9. JAWS might not announce it but
there is a comma between the ranges I just used. Similarly, you could hide
and show hidden columns. For example, if you want to hide columns b and e,
you could use the Go To box and type in b:b,e:e and press enter key to
select the ranges. You would then use CTRL+0 to hide the columns or
Shift+CTRL+0 to show the columns. (Again, there is a comma between the
ranges I specified). This method doesn't work correctly though if you are
using merged cells in any of the rows or columns you want to hide or show.

left, use shift with left arrow key to select the desired columns and then
To

I got somewhat confused on this site as well. I'll try to remember my

I read directions; you need an invitation. So I entered on invitation and
gave my name and email and a message why I wanted webvisum. The reason for
this is that they want to minimize spam. So I stated that I am blind...
Then I think I submitted. I received an automatic message from site
giving me a user name and password. I copied password to clipboard. I then
open firefox because you need to register using FF.
It asks for user ID and password and then registered it. I cannot remember
all the steps but this is the general idea. I did not need to reply to any
emails.

Hi Ann

You can find normal.doc as follows: (I am assuming you are using XP)

1. Go to My computer and press enter
2. press enter on your C drive
3. press enter on documents and settings
4. press enter on your user's name
5. press enter on application data
6. locate Microsoft file folder and press enter
7. Hit the letter T (as in tango) and press enter on templates file
folder
8. you should land on normal.doc

If you are using windows7, then I guess that the best way to find
normal.doc is to:

1. Press the window key for the search box
2. type normal.doc
3. You should find normal.doc in the search result.

I am not at my Windows7 computer right now to verify this. I hope that
someone else on the list can verify this for you?

Don,

Don't undo what you have fixed but couldn't you have done
the following:
1. Uninstall office 2007
2. Install Office 2007 using the custom install and only
choose Outlook to install
3 import your old mail and settings from your Outlook.pst
file that was left after the uninstall
4. Install Office 2010 Home student

Take care.

The open dialog in Firefox threw a curve ball at me too when I first

addresses whether you shorten them or not. HTH.

I tested freedom scientific because I figure their link would have all

I went on other sites and Jaws was very clumbsy so I'd thought it could be a

type in the www. when you open a new web site. An example of this is:
jaws-users.com

I learned this wen I was teaching JAWS. The student typed in the address
without the WWW. and I went to correct him and he had hit enter and the
computer went to the site.

Take care,
Kathy

In both browsers I use a shortcut. Just type in the jaws-users
portion of the address (without the quotes) and hit Control + Enter.
This will prefix the necessary
http://www.;
and append the .com
portions of the address. This however, only works with ,.com addresses.

I just press F6 to get to the address bar to enter a new address. This
works in IE and Firefox.

Take care.

Brian,

Will this work in Excel 2007 and Excel 2010?

Thanks for posting this.

JAWS might not announce it
CTRL+but
there is a comma between the ranges I just used.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting multiple columns or rows in Excel 2007

Take care.

Thanks. I am still trying to find a way to unhide a range of columns at one

not a Jaws issue.

Place your cursor on column P.
ALT-h O and down arrow to hide/unhide menu and hit spacebar.
Highlight unhide columns and enter.
Only column P will be unhidden.

- Original Message - My problem is that I have multiple columns
hidden in a spread sheet, for example columns B to p. So I want to unhide
only column p. How do I do that? When I am on column q and hit shift left
arrow and select unhide columns from the menu it unhides all the columns
b-p. the same happens if when on column A and I hit shift right arrow and
then select unhide columns all the columns from b to p get unhidden.

 Patti,

Tried this nifty program but didn't work too well on my backup 750 GB
USB backup drive. I had 13 directories on it before installing the
eject.exe file and running it. The message said it was safe to
 disconnect or unplug the drive.
I did this and next time I plugged it in to check it I only had 10
directories. Fortunately I recopied what was lost but feel I can't
trust this utility. Have you had any similar occurrences?

 Hey Gang,
Here is a little program that goes on the root of a thumb
 drive or your
 external drive.
All you have to do is copy the .exe to the main folder, or
 the root of
 whatever you want to remove.
When you get done using your thumb drive press enter on
 eject and it closes
everything down, so you can remove it safely.
I will leave it in my dropbox until Friday morning, and then
 it will be
 deleted.
Yes David it is a free share.
Oh, in that folder there is a help txt file, but all you
 need to copy is the
 eject.exe file.
