I'd get it with the GForce only because you may want or even need it later,
and since we're talking about a laptop, either you do it now or you'll be
stuck with out it. I don't know, but I've been told you can't add it later
and if this is true, I'd take the chance if I were you. As for Win 8, well
you have your reasons, but again, I'd go with it. I have as a matter of fact
and I love it.

Greetings

I am buying a customised laptop from HP and have the choice of Intel HD 4000
or Gforce GT 630m 2GB graphics card. I'd really appreciate if someone with
relevant knowledge can advise me which card may work better with Jaws?

This is a HP DV6 model with I7 2.4 Intel quadcore processor, 8 GB RAM and a

pci express x16, modern expansion cards are pci express x1, which should
fit the x16 slot fine. You are thinking of plain pci cards which are

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 with Windows 8

2013-02-13 Thread Steve

Certainly, Win 8 is useable by Jaws 14 etc.

I guess I'm an old fuddy-duddy, comments like what is below don't seem to be
very helpful. Here are some considerations to bear in mind:

1. Win 8 layout is completely different from earlier versions. I do AT
training, and there are several people who have upgraded to Win 8 and
subsequently had their systems rolled back to Win 7. Yes, there are
workarounds like classic shell etc. but the Win 8 experience is if not quite
radically different, it is certainly a lot more unique that previous
upgrades.

Second, you may not have support for some of your programs in Win 8, I don't
know if Openbook has released a patch to work in Win 8 yet, for example.

If you are getting a new computer, then there are some nice advantages with
Win 8 including Safeboot. But, since there are so many sighted users
unhappy with Win 8, for my money, I'm sticking with Win 7 which will be
supported for another seven years, and I'll await a more user-friendly
Windows 9 which will probably be out sooner than later. I think Win 8 is
Microsoft's latest equivalent of Windows ME and Vista, as Herman and His
Hermits would say A Must to Avoid!

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

[JAWS-Users] ready boost

2013-02-13 Thread David Ferrin
I found after just a bit of research that my test yesterday did not meet the
minimum requirements for ready boost to work properly. According to my findings
at least a 1 to 1 ratio of flash memory to system memory is required with a
maximum of 2.5 to 1 ratio. For example if your system has 4 GB of memory you
should use at least a 4 GB flash device and as I understand the upper limit the
same system could handle a flash memory device up to 10 GB. It would seem that
anything more or less is not a valid option. One article said something about
optimal flash memory is double the system memory. So in short an 8 GB device
for a 4 GB system.

I do have an 8 GB flash drive which mathematically sounds like it will work
fine with my 3 GB lap top, results to follow when I find out what they end up
to be.

Ready boost helped my computers performance quite a bit, in my opinion.
I hope this helps you...

Hi friends,

does anyone know an application that works with JAWS that will allow me to

It seems that if you copy them from the machine that they were originally
recorded on, the right click menu to convert them to .DVR-MS is disabled.
I hope that I haven't lost these recordings as I have changed around PC's and

Any help would be much appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 with Windows 8

2013-02-13 Thread jim
Hi Scott:

I made the decision to buy a new windows 7 desktop computer in November.
I read the how to use windows 8 books from bookshare.
I decided for now to stay with windows 7, even though for the most part windows
8 looks like it works very well with Jaws.
I am very happy with my choice, I am one who is not afraid to learn new things.
I just think for me that windows 7 is smooth and secure right out of the box,
and very accessible with jaws.
I had no problems setting the new computer up and installing my programs.
I have a 3.6 GHZ AMD FX-4100 quad processor with 6 GB of ram and a TB of
storage.
I was able to buy this computer cheaper because it was a windows 7 instead of a
w-8.
So keep that in mind as well as you shop for a computer, you should be able to
get a more powerful windows 7 computer for the same money as a less powerful
window 8 one , in my opinion.

You can find the favorites folder by doing the following. In Windows XP, go
to the Documents and Settings folder, then to your user name folder, and
then to the favorites folder. In Windows 7, go to Users, your user name,
favorites.

When you are in the favorites folder, press alt-f for the file menu and
then select new and then new folder and press enter. Immediately type the
name you want for that folder and press enter. Then press enter on that
folder to open it. Now alt-Tab back to the favorites folder, find an item
you want in that folder and press control-X to cut that item. Now alt-tab
back to the new folder and press control-v to paste it into the new folder.
Repeat this process for each item you want to place in the new folder. When
done, while in the new folder, press alt+f4 to close it. Now go back and
create the next new folder and repeat the steps to move items into it. Do
this for each folder you want.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws February 14, Windows 7 Internet 9

I just did a big up-date today to Internet 9. Decided what the heck and
removed all of my Jaws 13 latest and it's components. As said that Jaws 14
is different for Scripts and settings. Then after a looking to be a clean
remove of said Jaws 13 with C-cleaner. I did a Install of the Jaws 14. I
seen no where in installing for a license number of mine or renewal or etc.
Being guessing I know I am paid up to date. Found the key of mine and it is
there.
After doing all the voice settings and apply and ok and out working fine and
jaws dies? Am I missing something??

I don't know how else to put it, but you are confusing pci, an ancient
technology that intel is trying to kill with pci express. There are
many new pci express x1 cards that can easily fit in the pci express x16
slot instead of a video card. Just go over to newegg and search for
something like a pci express sound card, you'll find them. I wouldn't
buy much in the way of a plain pci card today, the next board you buy
probably won't have more than one slot that will fit it.

2013-02-13 Thread Chris Hill
Unless you're doing heavy multitasking, I doubt you'll see any
difference. You are already hurting speed wise because usb2 is slow
compared to say sata or usb3. I played with ready boost a long time
ago, and found it pointless.

On 2/13/2013 13:29, David Ferrin wrote:

I do have an 8 GB flash drive which mathematically sounds like it will work
fine with my 3 GB lap top, results to follow when I find out what they end up
to be.

Cool man. Like I said. It's your choice in the end, and yeah, I guess if
there are things that don't work then yeah that is something to be carefull
of. Like Open Book for instance. Come to think of it, Magic is another
example. It don't work. I guess that the lay out thing didn't really bother
me as much as it did others. That's fine I guess. I guess my main theme
should have been try it out for your self and see what you think. Take a win
8 PC out for a spin in other words. But I guess you said you'll stick with
Win 7 though. That's fine. I was just saying it's fine, win 8 is fine that
is, and it was good of you to ask. It would have been even cooler if you
could try it out which I don't know if you have. Paull Thurott guesses that
Win 9 will be more metro like then Win 8 already is. But who knows. We'll
just have to weight and see.

I'd say go ahead and go for windows 8. It works just fine for me. It's not
hard to use it's just people don't like to work hard. I'm like that to
 some
times to be honest. So I'm not really bashingthem. See what is hard wal
 what
was kind of for me was that things aren;'t all where you know them to be.
Some things work differently too. So yeah, it's not all that bad. The
 start
screen, it's like a table. So, yeah. It's your choice in the end, but I
would go for it if it were me. You're very wize to ask how it works. I
applaud you. One shouldn't just fall for the it's hard to use with a
 screen
reader thing so easily. One should ask Oh is it r4eally? Then you will
 see
for your self. What others call hard maybe a peace of cake for you. Who
 knows?

 Hello Everyone,

I am about to purchase a new laptop. I am trying to decide rather to go

Inthaneelf,

I am tired of reporting things to them and getting canned responses from one

of their lower-level techs that shows he doesn't have a clue and sometimes
appears like he never read the original report.

Now, having said that, if you are lucky enough to get things elevated, Mr.
Downey and Greeley (sp) are excellent and usually can find a solution.

As one who was formerly involved in the AT field as a dealer, it is getting
harder and harder to find good support these days. I think both because of
the product complexity and niche market, I don't know frankly how these
small companies can continue to provide decent tech support. There is in my

opinion only one compamy who really hasn't dropped the ball as far as tech
support for assistive technology.

An alternative is to use Firefox, where html5 is better understood than
 in IE.
In Internet Explorer, you could try turning off the virtual cursor with
 Insert+z, then find
the link and press enter on it. Then Toggle the virtual cursor on again
with insert+z to resume normal operation.

I have noticed that some links will not open at all, and this happens
on many websites of late. I may not have my HTML or some other setting
set right, but even trying to do a shift enter, which works sometimes
because some links open in a new browser window, doesn't help. This is
Jaws 14 so not sure if it's a Jaws 14 thing or something in my
configuration settings. I also get the message on some pages that tell
me to upgrade I.E. but I refuse to use 9 because a lot of people have
had trouble navigating or downloading using 9. Are some links
configured in some way to where Jaws can't line up with the link and
open? I can switch to another version to see if the problem persists
but wanted to ask first if anyone has seen kind of a frequent thing
with websites where links just won't open. And it's not the whole
site, just to be clear. It's just certain links on the sites, which
leads me to believe there's something about the link itself that makes
it impossible to open. Do I have to put it back to mouse-over setting
in HTML? I have it not to speak that but should it be put back, as
some links have something to do with something mouse-over related?
Which I don't really know the meaning of but just puzzled about this
whole thing.

 Hope someone can help.

I'm getting a separate graphics card- and heard some recommendation to that

area is my wife's AMD with a built in AMD video card. and I'm not even
trying to say that all the built in AMD cards are troublesome, just the one
she has, I'll go break into her machine and find out which one its using if
you want that info.

but her AMD matching, with built in video card has some small troubles that
seem to be (from all I and FS can determine) troubles with this setup.

regards,
inthane

Thanks for the suggestion Rick- unfortunately not very much there. I tried
both graphics card and video card- I'm confused at this point whether they
are different or if the term has just changed ;) It was a good suggestion
though, and I forget that that source of info is available.

Hi Cher,
You could also check the technical service bulletins on the FS website.

2nd question on buying computer- Does a ATI vs. Nvidia

graphics card make a difference to JFW in anyone's experience? Last time I
bought an Nvidia G-Force card on an AMD processor, and I feel that JFW has
not lived as happily as might be on this computer and am wondering whether
the graphics card is a factor. Thanks for any insight and comments.

Cher
