Re: [JAWS-Users] wildcards in dictionary manager

2014-05-07 Thread Eyþór Kamban Þrastarson
Thanks for being of help
My thoughts actually were to try to create a rule in dictionary manager that
manages to detect references in research articles and play a sound instead
of reading them because in some research articles references make up for a
lot of the letters and it would spare a lot of time to be able to skip over
them.
This is possible by using find and replace but I thought it would be more
convinient to use the Jaws dictionary manager because that way I won't have
to save a copy of the article and risk accidentally overriding the original.
Plus it would work on pdfs to.

Does the following Help topic, taken from the JAWS Dictionary help,
Introduction, assist in the process?

Adding Speech for Special Symbols
While JAWS correctly represents the most frequently used symbols with
speech, you may need to add new ones. If you are reading a document and find
that JAWS misrepresents or does not announce a symbol, do the
following:

1.. Open Settings Center (INSERT+F2) and expand the Images and Symbols
group.
2.. Select the Speak Character Value in Hex check box.
3.. Choose OK to save changes and close Settings Center.
4.. Return to your document. Move the cursor to a lowercase letter "a"
(type one if none are present) and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly.
JAWS should say, "Character U+61HEX". If you hear anything else, do not
proceed with these steps.
5.. Move the cursor to the character whose speech representation you want
to change and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly to obtain the hexadecimal
unicode value of the character. Be sure to make a note of this value, as you
will need it in the next steps.
6.. Using a text editor like Notepad, open the .sbl file for the active
synthesizer. This file is located in your user settings folder (C:\Documents
and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\X (where X
is the JAWS version number)\Settings\Enu). If your user settings folder does
not contain Eloq.sbl, then look for it in the shared settings folder.
Note: Character definitions are specific to your synthesizer and selected
language. For example, if you are using Eloquence and American English, you
should open the file named Eloq.sbl and modify the section named [American
English].

8.. At the bottom of the appropriate section for your language, add a new
entry for the specific symbol you want JAWS to speak. The entry should be in
the following format:

  U+=SpokenRepresentation

(Where is the unicode hexadecimal value of the symbol, and
"SpokenRepresentation" is the desired pronunciation).
9.. Save your changes to the .sbl file, and then quit and restart JAWS.
Your speech changes should now take effect.

I think there are no possibilities to use wildcards in another way.
JAWS is the simplest screen reader speaking about dictionary.
Even Talks is better, at least we can replace a letter with another one,
this being a very good option for those who use diacritics unspeakable
by a
specific voice.
We wrote many messages to Freedom asking to improve the dictionary, we
don't
need it so advanced like that found in NVDA, but at least to replace a
string with another one.

Let's wait for version 16...

Do you know if there are any more uses for wildcards in the dictionary
manager than using the asterisk * character at the end of an expression

Thanks, Joseph, and thank you also for your concern. I have good message
rules set up, and while it is possible to get something unwanted, it isn't
likely, and if I do, I also have excellent defenses. In addition, I don't
open attachments unless A. I know who they're from, and B. they are
expected. Same with links. If I see an unexplained link, it never gets
clicked. I've had my computer infected only once, and that was the one time
I had to briefly close my antivirus program and firewall a couple of years
ago. Soon as I turned them back on, the infestation was summarily dealt
with, though of course, everyone in my address book got something with my
name on it that I definitely didn't send. So, yes, I'm aware, and I'm
careful, (smile).

2014-05-07 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi shoshana,

In outlook 2007 and 2010 To delete a message and have the next message
automatically open try the following:
1. Go to Tools > Options > tab once to "Email options..." and press enter.
2. You will land on the following item: "After moving or deleting an open
item." This is a combo box, so you can press up or down arrow to modify the
setting. Make sure to select the following item: "Open the next item."
3. Shift tab about 2 or 3 times to locate the "Ok" button and press enter.
4. Once again press Shift+tab about 4 times to "Ok" and press enter.
5. Open an email message then press Control+d (delta). The currently open
email message should be deleted and the next email message should show.

I really, really would like to discourage you from reading through your
e-mail in this manner, as you might unwittingly be inviting something nasty
into your computer. You are essentially opening all email without any
consideration as to where it came from or who sent it to you. .

On the other hand, if you have created message rules to automatically sort
your mail into their respective folders, reading mail in this manner can be
completed quite quickly. The danger of accidentally opening something nasty
still exists, but it is not as great as automatically opening everything in
your Inbox.

Don't forget that your Deleted items folder will get a bit cluttered, so you
will want to go in there every couple of days and clear everything out.

Feel free to write me off-list for free help with absolutely any computer
related problem!

Hi all,

I suspect I know the answer to this, and I can deal with a "you'll have to
live with it, so hush now, and do so", but on the unlikely chance there may
be a way to do what I want, I'll ask. After all, you all are far more
knowledgeable than I, so let me explain.

Until I got this computer, which my computer guru pre-loaded for me (with
legally licensed software) I used Outlook express, and liked it. One of the
things I really liked was that I could go into a folder, start with the
first message, open and read it, hit delete, and the next message would
automatically open and JAWS would read it. This made clearing a folder easy
and relatively effort free.

I can't do that with my Outlook 2007. I have to open the message, let JAWS
read it, then close the message, delete the read message, go to the next
message and repeat. I know I could probably find OE again somewhere, but
there are features in Outlook I really do like, and, well, it's here, so I'm
willing to keep it, and if there is no way to set it to do what I described
above, I can live with that, too ... but is there a way?

David, as I understand what you're telling me, this would only be available
in the inbox, correct? Problem with that is that I have my messages sorted
and placed in several different folders, depending on my own broad
categories. I've got all these folders (which are level 2, I think) under
personal folders. So would this setting work in all those folders? Would
it work if I placed all those folders as sub folders under the inbox folder?
Thanks!

Hi, I finally found the information on the version of Outlook I'm using,
and

it looks like it's Outlook 2006.  If I update to the latest version;
1. Will it cost me anything? (I don't think so, but I'd like to be sure)
2. Will I have to reconfigure everything, like set up new folders, rules,
and stuff?
3. Will I be able to retain all the emails I've saved in folders on my
current version?
4. Does 2010 have changes that will make it worth the trouble?

I can live happily with what I have, but one is always curious. I'm using
Windows 7 ultima and JAWS 14 (still).

Hello Shoshana,

The following apparently applies for Outlook 2007. I am not at a system to
try it but hopefully doing the following will work for you.

Go to Tools - Options - Preferences - E-mail Options. Use tab and you should
find "After
moving or deleting an open item" and next to it should be a combo box of
choices. See if "open the next item" is a choice in the combo box.

Take care.

Though Annette's information is very good, if it becomes a bit difficult to
execute the steps, as a work-around you might want to try saving the .docx

I am assuming that you are asking about tables in MS-Word 2010, and not
MS-Excel2010. Give this a try.

1. Place your cursor in any cell of your table.
2. Activate your Applications Menu and navigate down to Select, press
Enter.
3. From the select submenu, navigate down to Table and press Enter. Note -
After doing this, do not press arrow keys or Character keys as if you do,
you will undo the selection of the table.
4. Go to the Ribbon and navigate to Layout Tab. Note - This is not the
Page Layout tab. This Layout tab is located after the Design tab. You will
have to press Tab a number of times to get here.
5. Press Down arrow to open the Layout tab
6. Use your Tab key to make your way over to the Convert to Text button and
press enter. Again, you will have to press Tab a lot of times before you
get to this button.
7. A dialog box will open which allows you to determine how the data will
be dealt with once the table is removed. I never make changes in this
dialog box, so I cannot advise you on this. I just tab to OK and press
Enter.
8. I believe that at this point, your data is selected but is no longer in
a table. Press an arrow key and you can now look at the info as you usually
do

HTH,
Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with key stucking on laptop

2014-05-07 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hopefully others will chime in, but not being there to troubleshoot, off the
top of my head, I'm going to assume the following possible fix(s)...
.

1. You might have something running in the background or within MSConfig
startup making the computer use lots of processing power when booting up. I
suggest going into MSConfig and unloading what is not essential. I can help
you with this if it is something you would like to try.

2. you might have an issue with your sound card drivers, and this may have
been caused if you have your Windows Updates set to install automatically.
You or someone else may have also accidentally manually installed something
having to do with your soundcard which seemed important. If you have a USB
headset try attaching and booting up your computer. The computer will push
the audio through the USB rather than your speakers--hopefully you won't
hear the stuttering anymore.

3. You might have some dirt and junk making the key stick resulting in the
sending and resending of the signal. The following can cause keys to stick:
ice cream, coffee, soda, etc. You will have to remove the key caps and clean
them out with soap and water. This is simple to do, but can cause a bit of
anxiety since you'll essentially have to forcefully pull the key caps off.
.

4. If this is a new computer, sometimes manufacturers install additional
sound card driver "features" which are suppose to give you this great audio
experience, but it often causes problems such as echoing for screenreader
users. You will want to check for this too.

The applications key seems to be stuck when booting up the laptop. It
causes JAWS to make a stuttering noise and the only way I can stop this is
by pressing the down arrow key. The key itself is not actually down and I
have no idea how to stop this.

Any suggestions?

Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook

2014-05-07 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Shoshana,

In addition to using CTRL+D to delete an open message you can also set
Outlook to open the next message automatically after closing or deleting a
message. Use Alt+F followed by Alt+T to go into options. Use down arrow
key to the Mail options category. Use Shift+Tab a few times and you will
find the "After moving or deleting an open item" combo box. Press down
arrow key until you find the "open the next item" choice. Tab to OK button
and press spacebar. After setting that option the next message in the list
should open after you close the current message or delete it.

If you are reading a message and you just want to read the next one use CTRL
with the period to open the next message or CTRL with comma to open the
previous one. I think that will work okay in Outlook 2010. In Outlook 2013
the next and previous messages open but JAWS doesn't seem to focus right all
the time.

Take care.

Shoshana

It's in your folder list under the search folder.
It's list all of your unread messages from all folders.

Hey Gang,

Can someone tell me the shortcut key to get to unread email?

All my new emails come in at the bottom, and I have a lot of email that I
have read at the top, and I have to arrow down through it.

In OE all I had to do is press the letter U, but it doesn't work in outlook
2010, Jaws 14.

Thanks for all the help.

[JAWS-Users] Outlook 2010 JAWS 15 latest build with Win 7 search function and a wrong keystroke shuts down Outlook 2010

2014-05-07 Thread East, Robin
David and group,

I tried this but I goofed in the process. (smile) However, what I discovered is
that Microsoft Outlook 2010 using windows 7 and JAWS 15 latest build locked up
outlook and I had to shut it down. I have tried this several times and it is at
least consistent in shutting down Outlook.

So control shift F then tab three times to From ...edit type in the name you
want to search but instead of hitting enter here is where I goofed. I just hit
F6. Outlook froze and gave me a message to re-open it.

Not sure if this is something freedom should look at or just leave it as I
simply hit the wrong keystroke but I thought it interesting that it caused
Outlook to stop working and that I had to re-start it.
Later...
Robin east

Now tab,
Enter on trust center settings,
Up arrow until you hear;
Email security.
Now tab and check the box which reads,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] E-mail in Outlook 2010 is being read abnormally

When I am going through the List View of my In Box, using Outlook 2010,
Win.7 and JAWS 12, after I enter on a message to read, it usually says
Document something or other. It will announce randomly Document 1 through
Document 12 so far. After that I hear if I have any problems reading, then
I should use the web browser. What I would like to get rid of is the
Document announcement because after this is read, then I must manually go
through the fields again to get to the message, in order to start it to
read. All of these extra steps wastes so much time each day, considering
the volume of e-mail messages I read.

What can I do to eliminate all of this and just start the message reading
at the top normally, without additional confusion?

Thank you for any help.

2014-05-07 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Annette,

If you know that both names are shown in the "TO" header you can use CTRL+E
and then type:

To:John Smith AND to:susan Jones

You need to use the To: before both names, otherwise you will find messages
to John Smith with Susan Jones shown anywhere in the message.

There should be no spacing between the TO, colon and person's name. Also
the word "AND" must be in all caps.

You do not need to press enter key after typing in the search criteria.
After typing in the search string you can use F6 until the list of results
appears or shift+tab until you find the list of results. I am using Outlook
2013 but I think you use the same keystrokes to the results list when using
Outlook 2010.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tables

2014-05-07 Thread Annette Carr

Enter.
8. I believe that at this point, your data is selected but is no longer in
a table. Press an arrow key and you can now look at the info as you usually
do

HTH,
Annette

2014-05-07 Thread shoshana hathaway
It does, thank you, David. I had a far more cumbersome way to do this,
usually to retrieve a message from the deleted messages folder, after
realizing I needed it. This will save me a fair amount of time and minor
aggravation, if nothing else (smile).

Hello there;
This may help some using outlook 2007&2010;

Using Find In MSOutlook2007&2010 Using Jaws Locating All Messages By One
Sender:
This will work in any mailbox in-box, sent-box etc.
1. Press ctrl+shift+the letter "f"=advance-find.
2. Tab three times=fromedit.
3. Type in a sender's first or last name.
4. Press enter.
5. Press the f6key and you are put into the list of messages by the sender
you searched for.
6. If you open a message to read it, press escape once to close it. Then
move to the next one to read.
7. If you open a message to read and do not wish to read any more, press
escape twice and you are placed back in to the original location were the
search was started. This means if you were in the in-box when starting the
search, pressing escape twice will return you back to the in-box. Pressing
escape once will only return you to the list of messages found in the
search.

***

II. Searching For A Specific Topic In A Subject Field:
1. Press ctrl+shift+the letter "f".

 2. Type a word that would be found in the subject line you are searching
for.

3. Press enter.

4. Press f6 and you are put into the list of messages containing the subject
line searched for.

5. If you open a message to read it, press escape once to close it. Then
move to the next one to read.

6. If you open a message to read and do not wish to read any more, press
escape twice and you are placed back in to the original location were the
search was started. This means if you were in the in-box when starting the
search, pressing escape twice will return you back to the in-box. Pressing
escape once will only return you to the list of messages found in the
search.

another way to do this is,

example,
within the inbox,
ctrl+e= edit search,
now type in the search word,

now, shift+tab twice,
you will see the list of messages pertaining to the search criteria

hope this helps.

When you press control+y to bring up the folder list, press s until you hear
search folders. Then press right arrow, then press down arrow. There is
the unread folder.

Can you just go to your unread message folder?
It's in your folder list under the search folder.
It's list all of your unread messages from all folders.

Hey Gang,

Can someone tell me the shortcut key to get to unread email?

All my new emails come in at the bottom, and I have a lot of email that I
have read at the top, and I have to arrow down through it.

In OE all I had to do is press the letter U, but it doesn't work in outlook
2010, Jaws 14.

Thanks for all the help.

By listening to the latest jawsbyte from freedomscienti

you can use the *sign to replace, eat* as actual word and ate as
replacement. so, the word eating, eated and eaten will sound as
appropriate as ating, aten ated.

thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] the program has stopped working

2014-05-07 Thread Joseph FreeTech
You can purchase an external DVD drive for about $35.

You can research whether one can run a Windows 7 OS repair via USB thumb
drive.

Since your netbook probably has a restore partition you might consider
creating a set of restore disks to return the netbook back to factory
defaults. You might also be able to create a "restore disk" using a thumb
drive. The thumb drive route is preferable since you will not need to
purchase the external DVD drive and the restoration will be much faster and
easier.

If you end up with a hardware problem it might be time for a new netbook.

You will almost certainly need sighted help to complete any of the
procedures above.

I really hope I'm not coming off badly, but for those who have a computer
and have never created restore disks, this is why it is important to do
so--you never know when you will be needing them, but know for sure you will
need them. I also hope many of you will carefully consider creating a
password reset thumb drive, which is easy to do and can save you lots of
headaches.

Feel free to write me off-list for free help with absolutely any computer
related problem!

Hi Kevin,

I take it that since you have Windows Media Player 12, that you are running
windows 8. Is this correct? I believe that you need to run a repair on your
operating system. It sounds as if you have either or both some missing and
corrupt DLL files in your system. The easiest way would be to have a repair
disc, which computer manufacturers do not supply with their computers
anymore, but you can buy one for your OS Either through the manufacturer,
Microsoft, or some place like Ebay. You will need to insert the cd into the
disc drive on your computer, determine which key to press to boot to the
disc drive, and select repair Windows from the options shown. You can also
perform this operation with an installation disc.

hth,
Mike

[JAWS-Users] Messages in Outlook 2010 are not being labeled as READ

2014-05-07 Thread Liuda
Hi.

I am using Outlook 2010 and Win 7.

What setting must I check to be sure messages will be marked as read in the
list view? Right now, for some reason, they all of a sudden are not labeled
as read any longer.

Thank you.
