[JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test
Happy Independence Day, gang. My Internet service provider, Verizon, informed me yesterday that my monthly bill for DSL broadband service would be increasing by $5 per month starting this month. So I called their customer retention help line and complained and was offered a free upgrade of my DSL service to DSL enhanced. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test
I tried this speed test site, but the results are not reported in a manner that I find interpretable. I am looking for a site that reports download and upload speeds as mbps, which is the measurement used by Verizon to promote its various tiers of DSL service. The results on this site are reported as latency, which is meaningless to me. I am connected directly to the Internet via a DSL modem without a router and do not have wifi capability, if that makes any difference for this particular test site. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test
Hello Gerald, One site I use is http://www.speedguide.net/speedtest/ http://www.speedguide.net/speedtest/ You can test your speed using different participating mirror servers located in various locations. You can press H when the speed test page loads to get just above where you can pick a mirror server closest to you. Press enter on the link for the mirror server you want to use and wait for the test to finish. When the results page loads use H to move to the heading just above the results. As you use down arrow key past an ad you will hear the results. Arrow down to where you hear download and then upload and your download and upload speeds are given. For example, here is what I just got from one of the mirrors: SG Speed Test Results kbps 2000 4000 6000 8000 1 download upload ≪ 19454 kbps ↓ ≪ 303 kbps ↑ 19454 kbps down (~19.45 Mbps, 2375 KB/s) ↓ Further details follow that info. You can check your speed this way using different participating mirror servers. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test
I reran the IPhone speed test myself, and my download speed was measured as 616 kbps, so if your download speed is 7800 kbps, it sounds like your connection is pretty fast compared to mine. My upgraded DSL service is supposed to be activated next Tuesday, so I'll run the IPhone speed test again, and see whether Verizon actually upgraded my DSL service, or whether they are just trying to pull a fast one. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test
Wrong! 7,800Kbps is approximately equivalent to 7.8 megabits per second (Mbps). So, if you are paying for an Internet connection advertised as 10Mbps download speed, then that is not too bad. Internet speed can vary greatly, based on many factors. - Original Message - From: Jorge Paez jorgeapaez1...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, July 04, 2014 12:23 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Internet Speed Test 78 hundred KBPS, which translates to 7.8 gbps. [JAWS-Users] Internet Speed Test Disparities
Using information gleaned from this list and other sources, I ran Internet speed tests from three different sites and got threewidely different results. At http://i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.htmlmy my download speed measured 660 kbps. At http://www.2wire.com/?p=7 my download speed measured 258 kbps. And at http://testmy.net/upload my download speed measured an impressive 8.7 mbps. What's going on with all these speed tests? I realize that each speed test uses its own propriatary method of testing Internest speeds, but why is there such a huge disparity among the results? Is it possible that none of these speed tests is accurate, and that all such speed tests are bogus? According to Verizon, my current DSL download speed is supposed to be between 768kbps and 1mbps, which will supposedly be upgraded to 3.1 mbps to 7.8 mbps next Tuesday. The result from the IPhone speed test at 660 kbps would seem to be closest to what I'm currently getting, but how can I know for sure whether any of these tests is reliable or accurate? Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Speed Test Disparities
Hi, I ran the same test twice, back to back, and got 17.1mbps and 8.9mbps, only about 30 seconds apart. I could be wrong but I suspect that the reading is accurate and that the connection speed fluctuates. I realize that each speed test uses its own propriatary method of testing Internest speeds, but why is there such a huge disparity among the results? Is it possible that none of these speed tests is accurate, and that all such speed tests are bogus? Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Speed Test Disparities
I think that Brian Lee offered a clue when he mentioned mirror servers. I think that to arrive at your speed your connection is compared with a server of known specs. I could be completely wrong. This said, a site like e-how should be able to explain how these internet speed tests are run. You can google your question, too. All of this said, the variability of results you are getting begs further inquiry. If my memory is correct, your focus will be on the worksheet at the top of the list. This list has the first worksheet at the top and the last worksheet at the bottom. You can press shift, control and the letter s to bring up a list of your worksheets. Then click on the one you want. You can also specify how many pages you want in your workbook by adding or deleting them. You can also name your pages and change their order. If you don't use spreadsheets a lot, you probably won't need to do much of the above. 2014 2:32 PM, Tom wrote: control + page down -Original Message- From: leonard morris Sent: Friday, July 04, 2014 12:30 PM To: jaws Subject: [JAWS-Users] changing sheets in an excel book I'm using Excel 2013. Re: [JAWS-Users] changing sheets in an excel book
Hello Leonard, Excel 2013 only has one blank worksheet by default instead of the three blank sheets you would get in previous versions of Excel. You can change this default by using Alt+F followed by T and the options dialog will appear. The first category in the list is general so just start tabbing until you find the Include this many sheets option. Use up arrow key to set what you want as the default number of blank sheets in each new workbook you create. Tab to OK and use spacebar. You will need to close Excel and open it again for the change to be in effect. Once you have more than one sheet in the workbook you can use the CTRL PGUP, CTRL+PGDN or CTRL+Shift+S keystrokes. Take care. the most accurate test, according to my ISP, is speedtest.net. this is a non bias recommendation since it is considered as to be the standard site to test speeds. one caveat is in order to start the test, there is a flash based begin test button smack dab in the middle of the screen that needs to be activated. if the OCR feature is used, it is possible to activate. alternately, get a sighted assistant to do it for you. the test takes about 10-30 seconds depending on how fast the PC is. - Original Message - From: Gerald Levy bwaylimi...@verizon.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, July 04, 2014 1:22 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Internet Speed Test Disparities Using information gleaned from this list and other sources, I ran Internet speed tests from three different sites and got threewidely different results. Re: [JAWS-Users] changing sheets in an excel book
While a workbook in Excel 2010 came up with 3 worksheets per workbook, I believe that Excel 2013 comes up with only 1 worksheet per workbook; you would need to add worksheets as needed. Re: [JAWS-Users] Freedom Scientific Mirror Drivers
Hi Flor, I think I misspoke. I should have said that I thought I read / heard FS wasn't using mirror drivers anymore. I don't have a mirror driver with XP but, I do with Win7. I was wondering if the mirror driver in Win7 should be removed. Thank you very much for your reply. Take Care. Re: [JAWS-Users] changing sheets in an excel book
That must have been the case since I was unable to switch to a new worksheet using ctrl page down or up. I thought I was not following instructions and doing it wrong. So, how do you create a new work sheet in excel 2013?
