[JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list! This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 650 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then the Mailman program will remove your email address automatically. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the to: field often times such rules get fouled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article or message of interest which relates to the Nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list send it to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before obtaining approval. No auto responders are to
[JAWS-Users] Silencing blank In EXCEL
Hi, I followed Mike's recommendations to silence JAWS saying Blank. However, in MS EXCEL, 2010, when I move to a blank cell, JAWS still calls out Blank. Is there any way to silence this? Arrow down to, punctuation closed..., right arrow to open, down arrow to, customize punctuation, press the spacebar to open. Make sure you press the spacebar to open not enter. [JAWS-Users] jaws 16 beta problem in outlook express
Hello list I was using outlook express ok on windows 7 PC with JFW 16 beta and this morning I got a message that an update is available. I started the download but got a message that the patch could not be installed saying that there may be an error in my installed JFW. Now the strange thing is that when I try to do an email the to and subject fields are ok but when I try to type in the body field I do hear what I type but when I try to read the message jaws keeps saying blank blank. I sent a test to myself and I could read the test message, so it is only in the body where I can not read what I have typed. Does anyone have a solution? O yes, I loaded jaws 15 and the problem does not exist, in fact I am writing this email with JFW 15 and I can read line by line etc. Regards Fanus --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 Beta
Hi Fanus and all members, I forgot to mention this in my last message, but everyone should be aware, Windows Mail and Outlook Express in Windows 7 are more than likely not supported by any version of Jaws This is because neither of these e-mail clients are supported by Microsoft in Windows 7 or higher. So, any problems in that regard with Jaws 16 beta, should probably not go on the beta report form. If I am mistaken, I hope that Eric will let us know. Hello Rick Well, before the upgrade of the patch failed, everything was ok. I decided to uninstall the jfw16.exe file and to reinstall it again and the problem is solved, so it has to do that the upgrade patch failed to install. Hi Rick So I take it that the patch update did work for you? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 Beta
Hi Robin, Windows Mail in Windows 7 is a registry edit, and Outlook Express, was not engineered by Microsoft to workin Windows 7 and therefore may have unexpected side-effects , which FS would not have anticipated in the development stage of Jaws. This is a question best answered by a representative from FS, I only mentioned it because the 2 clients mentioned, while are Microsoft products, are not being used in the versions of Windows that Microsoft intended. It's kind of like using a screwdriver for a pry bar if that is what you use it for, don't expect the manufacturer to replace it when it breaks. Hi Fanus, I do not use Avast, so I can't really comment on that part of your question, only to say that if you disable it to install Jaws, make sure that you disable your Internet connection first, and re-enable it before re-connecting to the Internet after installation. I would think that you would get a security window from Avast to allow the installation, if that is what's blocking it. Have you tried re-booting the computer? I started dealing with similar issues four or five weeks ago. I submitted a support request, but never heard anything back from the dev. I would think that you would get a security window from Avast to allow the installation, if that is what's blocking it. Have you tried re-booting the computer? Now the strange thing is that when I try to do an email the to and subject fields are ok but when I try to type in the body field I do hear what I type but when I try to read the message jaws keeps saying blank blank. I sent a test to myself and I could read the test message, so it is only in the body where I can not read what I have typed. Does anyone have a solution? Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 16 beta problem in outlook express
Did you re-install the patch scripts for Outlook Express in your Jaws 16 beta? I had to do that with the first release of Jaws 16. But, my update went fine and I am using OE with my Win 7 machine as I am writing this. I just ran the update from the Jaws update instead of downloading the whole beta. If you need the script, I think Dave posted it up on the Jaws-users.com website, or send me an email off-list and I can send it to you. - Original Message - From: Fanus To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2014 6:55 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws 16 beta problem in outlook express Hello list I was using outlook express ok on windows 7 PC with JFW 16 beta and this morning I got a message that an update is available. Hi If the internet connection is disabled while AVAST is disabled, it will be impossible to download and update the JAWS patch. You would need to have downloaded the full updated version before disabling Avast and the internet connection. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Justice Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2014 11:13 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 16 beta problem in outlook express Hi Fanus, I do not use Avast, so I can't really comment on that part of your question, only to say that if you disable it to install Jaws, make sure that you disable your Internet connection first, and re-enable it before re-connecting to the Internet after installation. [JAWS-Users] Thunderbird and the address book
I inadvertently deleted several contacts in my Thunderbird address book. However, I have Thunderbird on another computer with all the contacts still in tack. Is there a file I can get from the PC containing the address book with all the names and put it on the other computer? Thanks. If the program is available officially for a supported version of windows then report it. FS wont make any changes to jaws 16 to improve access to outlook express as it is not supported by MS. There are many other programs not owned or developed by Microsoft that run on Windows currently, several of which JAWS supports (or has supported). - Original Message - From: Bob t...@squashyware.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2014 11:35 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 Beta If the program is available officially for a supported version of windows then report it.
