Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading a Microsoft Word document with JAWS on a computer that came with Microsoft Office 2013 that was never used or activated

2015-02-28 Thread Mike Boyd

Highlight the document that you want to read, then open the applications
menu and select Open with, arrow down the list and press enter on word
Pad. This will display the document, and JAWS should be able to read it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reading a Microsoft Word document with JAWS on a
computer that came with Microsoft Office 2013 that was never used or
activated

Hi

I'm trying to set up a friend's new computer, Windows 7 64 bit, to be able
to read the occasional Word document he may have. This computer came with
Microsoft Office 2013. But no Office program has been run as a demo or
activated. I installed the Microsoft Office Word viewer and the
Compatibility pack for the Office 2007 system. When I open a Word 2003 or
2007 document in Microsoft Office Word Viewer, the text of the document
appears on the screen and can be read using the JAWS cursor. But the PC
cursor does not find anything to read at all. So I'm looking for
suggestions to make Microsoft Word Viewer work or another alternative.

Thanks for the help.

For years now, and several IE versions, I have used Control + L to open the
Address and search text box. The web address of whatever page you are on
will be in the box by default, and highlighted, so all you have to do is
press Control + C to copy the contents from the edit box. Then it can be

Let me try to explain this problem another way. When I press either Alt-D
or F6 in IE 8, the address bar is empty; there is just a blank edit field.
I must have inadvertently hit some keystroke command such that the contents
of the address bar are no longer being displayed. How can I fix this

Re: [JAWS-Users] vipre antivirus

2015-02-28 Thread Mike Boyd
Since the latest update of JAWS 16, vipre 2015 has become more compatible.
You must realize that the user interface has changed from what the previous
versions were, and it is like learning a new program. You will have to
change some of the settings in vipre when you first install it, but all of
these settings are accessible. these include setting up the schedule on
which you want Vipre to scan your computer, and if you want a full (Threat)
scan or a Quick scan. there are also check boxes for things lllike setting
the program to handle threats which are detected automatically or not, and
some other things, like setting the length of time which passes before Vipre
deletes quarantined threats automatically. However, once you have all of
this set up, and you do choose to let Vipre take care of the threats without
notifying you, then you can pretty much let it go without having to mess
around with it. The part that was so inaccessible before, but now is more
so, is the Quarantine and the ability to remove threats from your computer
manually, but this is now possible since the latest update of JAWS 16.

One other thing, I do recommend using a secondary malware software with
Vipre, like Malware Bytes. I think I would do this with any antivirus
software, it just makes good sense to cover your tracks.

[JAWS-Users] a couple of IE questions

2015-02-28 Thread David Ferrin
I remember doing this but I don't remember how, so my question is: How can I
copy a table from the Internet in to say notepad keeping the formatting
correct. I want to copy down a list of our American presidents to start with
among other items of historical interest to me.

The second question if somebody would refresh my memory is: how do I make what
JAWS is reading show on the screen. Often times when we're in Amazon for
example JAWS is saying something that isn't up for anybody else to see.

[JAWS-Users] Properly Uninstalling Jaws

2015-02-28 Thread Rick Justice
Interesting what you can find when you look in the right places,
this was taken directly from the help topics in Jaws 13.
I couldn't find anything about uninstalling on the FS website, only found
that the site is too verbose for my liking.

Uninstalling JAWS
To uninstall JAWS, do the following:

1.. Press WINDOWS Key to open the Start menu, and then choose All
Programs.
2.. Choose the correct JAWS submenu version, and then choose Tools.
3.. Select Uninstall JAWS X, where X is the version number, and then press
ENTER.
4.. If the User Access Control dialog box opens, select Continue or Yes to
continue.
5.. Choose whether you want to uninstall JAWS only, or uninstall JAWS and
all shared components. For more information, see Removing Shared Components.
6.. Choose the Next button and follow the instructions on your screen to
uninstall JAWS. Setup provides you with speech during this process and, if
you have a Focus or PAC Mate Braille display, allows you to read the screen
using braille.
Removing Shared Components
When you uninstall JAWS, you can choose to remove shared components. This
refers to DAISY training materials, video drivers, and other components that
are shared between different versions of JAWS, as well as among several
other Freedom Scientific products, such as MAGic.

If you have another version of JAWS, or other Freedom Scientific products,
installed on your computer, it is recommended that you choose not to remove
shared components. If you remove them, your other Freedom Scientific
products will no longer have all the necessary files. If you have no other
Freedom Scientific products or versions of JAWS on your system, it is
recommended that you choose to remove the shared components.

User Settings
When you uninstall JAWS, you are asked if you also want to delete your user
settings files. These are configuration files, scripts, and other settings
that you have customized or created. If you choose Yes, the files are
deleted. If you choose No, the files are retained in one of the following
locations:

  a.. C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\Version
Number\Settings\ENU, for Windows Vista or later
  b.. C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\Version Number\Settings\ENU, for Windows XP
Note: If you want to keep any customized or modified script files saved in
your user settings folder, it is recommended that you copy those scripts to
a folder outside of the JAWS installation folder before uninstalling the
program.

Note: Shared settings files are always removed.

Personal Settings (.jsi) Files
Any .jsi files that you created while making changes to certain settings
within JAWS are not deleted when you uninstall the program. These .jsi files
remain in the JAWS installation folder.

Silent Uninstall
If you are a network administrator and need to uninstall JAWS silently, do
the following:

  1.. Press WINDOWS Key+R.
  2.. Choose the Browse button.
3.. Navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific
Installation Information, and then select and open the appropriate GUID
(Global Unique Identifier). For JAWS, the GUID begins with the digits 356.
The digits at the end of the GUID identify the JAWS version number.
4.. Select the file UninstallJAWS.exe and press ENTER.
5.. Focus returns to the Run dialog box. If necessary, press TAB to make
sure that focus is in the Open combo box.
6.. Press END and then press the SPACEBAR.
7.. Type one of the following:
a.. /Type Silent - Uninstalls JAWS.
b.. /Type SilentRemoveShared - Uninstalls JAWS and removes all shared
components.
  8.. Press ENTER.
9.. If the User Access Control dialog box opens, choose Continue or Yes to
continue.
10.. Follow the remaining instructions that appear to uninstall JAWS.
  Back
   Next

HTH,
Rick Justice

Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Navigating in Word 2013 documents

2015-02-28 Thread Mike B.
Hi RHS,

Below are some settings notes I've saved in case I needed to upgrade to
Office / Word 2013, maybe they'll help your situation:

From: Jim Fettgather
There are, in my opinion, a couple of important changes to make in the
options section of Office 2013 to have it be more screen reader friendly.

To go there, after starting the program, to get to options, press Alt F,
then T.

You will be presented with options through which you can down arrow, the
first one is general.

I would uncheck the following two options:

Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view
Show the Start screen when this application starts

These are checked by default, and can cause real problems.
For example, if you show the start screen, you will be presented with a
variety of templates, rather than a blank document.
Next, in the Save Section,

I would uncheck the following two choices:
Don't show the Backstage when opening or saving files
Save to Computer by default

These are both checked by default, Word wants to save your files to your one
drive account, but it makes more sense to me to have files saved in the
documents
folder.

These are personal preferences, but I have sure found that implementing them
makes Word a lot easier to use.
Hope that helps.
Jim

From: Jean Menzies via Jfw
Just thought I'd share this for those who want to try it.

The symptom. I've often found sluggish performance in Word when searching,
or when opening a second document. Jaws seems to either not be able to read
a screen without refreshing, or, in searching, it would sometimes take two
tries to get to the results. Just plain sluggish.

In going through settings, I came across an option to Disable Hardware
Graphics Acceleration. I checked that and things seem to be much more
responsive
now. I'll see how the day goes. But if anyone wants to do this, go into
Options, Advanced, and the item is in there. If you use the, Alt + G
keystroke,
you'll get to it much quicker. From what I read on Google, if you change it
in one MS program, it should affect all of them. Hey, I don't need graphics
anyway. haha.
Hope this works.
Jean
Note From Mike B.: My settings wouldn't stick until I checked the, prompt to
update style, checkbox. To get to this checkbox the keystroke is, Alt + Y.

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

Microsoft Office 2013 is great software for Windows 8 and I am guessing that
quite a few of you may be using it on your system. This productivity suite
contains many technologies in-built inside it and sometimes due to them an
average computer has to suffer. If your facing this issues like crashing of
Office components or not running properly and freezing every now and then or
if they only works in Safe Mode of Office, then technology named Hardware
Graphics Acceleration may be the culprit behind this.

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

I found that many users having issues with working of Office 2013 on your
system are often advised to disable hardware graphics acceleration. Almost
in
all of the cases, disabling the hardware acceleration for graphics does the
trick and solves issues for many. In this article, I'll show you how to
disable
hardware acceleration of graphics using the UI and of course, using my
favorite Registry Editor.

Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Office 2013

Using UI

1. Open any Office 2013 component for example Word, and create a blank
document, click FILE.

[JAWS-Users] jaws and Itunes

2015-02-28 Thread Kimsan
I spent two days, well, let's be honest, five days of non-stop learning, and
I only learned two things so far lol.

How to add just one song and how to sync apps I have in itunes over to my
phone. Yes, there is still lots more I should learn but good start so far.

Tying it back to jaws, since I don't remember any version before this one, I
will say so far it's working well for me.

May I ask a question? Can I search for a rington or a song, etc via itunes,
or do I need to use the app store, download it there and then sync it, which
wouldn't make sense.

I guess using itunes, instead of using the app store, can I just do it
through itunes, if so, how?

I remember the itunes keystrokes briefly that someone posted a while back,
CTRL 1 etc, but I no longer have them notes.

So, to answer my own question, would I need to go to the itune store? If so,
how do I get there is it CTRL 2? Jaws doesn't say nothing for me, when
pressing CTRL 2.

Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure,
loyalty and persistence. Colin Powell

initiate a link instead of the enter key keeps it from jumping into forms
mode, and makes the navigating much smoother.

I have this problem too with certain web sites.

My question is: How do you exit out of forms mode, and how do you set Jaws
for manual forms mode?

I use Jaws 14 here at home, and Jaws 16 at work, both with 64-bit Windows 7
computers.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] flip-flop forms mode

I have a problem when visiting www.lowes.com. Jaws likes to go in and out of
forms mode when navigating through the site. In many places, you can't
simply go to a link and hit enter. It will only click the link when Jaws
goes into forms mode. This is particularly annoying when you find something
you want to look at in greater depth. To read the site, you have to
constantly exit out of forms mode. Sometimes when a page loads, it goes in
and out of forms mode quickly (flip-flop). Any ideas on how to fix this?
Tried setting Jaws for manual forms mode only but this did not work. Using
Jaws 16.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Properly Uninstalling Jaws

2015-02-28 Thread Kimsan
Does the help topic talk about how to uninstall jaws with an os that doesn't
have an all programs option?
I'm not trying to be difficult, just wondering...

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Properly Uninstalling Jaws

Interesting what you can find when you look in the right places, this was
taken directly from the help topics in Jaws 13.

Setup provides you with speech during this process and, if
you have a Focus or PAC Mate Braille display, allows you to read the screen
using braille.

  Back
   Next
