Re: [JAWS-Users] Updating Options
It was just exactly as you said, wow! Looks like I am ok, cause the 2 I mentioned are already at a higher I think level than is in window's options. The Intel graphics is 3000 and I noted 1.1 and 1.2 in the optional updates. The other one, nVidia is exactly was in the optional updates, so no need to change it. I did find Freedom Scientific mirror display drivers(3) of them. Well, that was a good venture to least know where to find it, and what is there. So even if no updates are needed, I learned something today, thank you again for the perfect instructions. - Original Message - From: Michael Boyd mike@comcast.net To: Jaws Users List jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 01, 2015 4:00 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Updating Options Hi Trish, It depends on which one your computer has installed as to which you would want to update. Tying it back to jaws, since I don't remember any version before this one, I will say so far it's working well for me. May I ask a question? Can I search for a rington or a song, etc via itunes, or do I need to use the app store, download it there and then sync it, which wouldn't make sense. I guess using itunes, instead of using the app store, can I just do it through itunes, if so, how? I remember the itunes keystrokes briefly that someone posted a while back, CTRL 1 etc, but I no longer have them notes. So, to answer my own question, would I need to go to the itune store? If so, how do I get there is it CTRL 2? Jaws doesn't say nothing for me, when pressing CTRL 2. Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence. I couldn't find anything about uninstalling on the FS website, only found that the site is too verbose for my liking. Uninstalling JAWS To uninstall JAWS, do the following: 1.. Press WINDOWS Key to open the Start menu, and then choose All Programs. 2.. Choose the correct JAWS submenu version, and then choose Tools. 3.. Select Uninstall JAWS X, where X is the version number, and then press ENTER. 4.. If the User Access Control dialog box opens, select Continue or Yes to continue. 5.. Choose whether you want to uninstall JAWS only, or uninstall JAWS and all shared components. For more information, see Removing Shared Components. 6.. Choose the Next button and follow the instructions on your screen to uninstall JAWS. Setup provides you with speech during this process and, if you have a Focus or PAC Mate Braille display, allows you to read the screen using braille. Removing Shared Components When you uninstall JAWS, you can choose to remove shared components. This refers to DAISY training materials, video drivers, and other components that are shared between different versions of JAWS, as well as among several other Freedom Scientific products, such as MAGic. If you have another version of JAWS, or other Freedom Scientific products, installed on your computer, it is recommended that you choose not to remove shared components. If you remove them, your other Freedom Scientific products will no longer have all the necessary files. If you have no other Freedom Scientific products or versions of JAWS on your system, it is recommended that you choose to remove the shared components. User Settings When you uninstall JAWS, you are asked if you also want to delete your user settings files. These are configuration files, scripts, and other settings that you have customized or created. If you choose Yes, the files are deleted. If you choose No, the files are retained in one of the following locations: a.. C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\Version Number\Settings\ENU, for Windows Vista or later b.. C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\Version Number\Settings\ENU, for Windows XP Note: If you want to keep any customized or modified script files saved in your user settings folder, it is recommended that you copy those scripts to a folder outside of the JAWS installation folder before uninstalling the program. Note: Shared settings files are always removed. Personal Settings (.jsi) Files Any .jsi files that you created while making changes to certain settings within JAWS are not deleted when you uninstall the program. These .jsi files remain in the JAWS installation folder. Silent Uninstall If you are a network administrator and need to uninstall JAWS silently, do the following: 1.. Press WINDOWS Key+R. 2.. Choose the Browse button. 3.. Navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific Installation Information, and then select and open the appropriate GUID (Global Unique Identifier). For JAWS, the GUID begins with the digits 356. The digits at the end of the GUID identify the JAWS version number. 4.. Select the file UninstallJAWS.exe and press ENTER. 5.. Focus returns to the Run dialog box. If necessary, press TAB to make sure that focus is in the Open combo box. 6.. Press END and then press the SPACEBAR. 7.. Type one of the following: a.. /Type Silent - Uninstalls JAWS. b.. /Type SilentRemoveShared - Uninstalls JAWS and removes all shared components. 8.. Press ENTER. 9.. If the User Access Control dialog box opens, choose Continue or Yes to continue. 10.. Follow the remaining instructions that appear to uninstall JAWS. [JAWS-Users] List Guidelines Reminder
Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader Program. So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently. Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is perfectly fine. The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any newsletters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to receiving moderator approval. Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment but in fact Mailman does remove them. When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 650 subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here. Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number of reasons. Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a number of such messages then the server will remove your email address automatically. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the to: field often times such rules get fouled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any member names. Please do not reply to a posted question simply to say you don't know the answer. All that does is create more traffic on an already very busy list for no reason at all. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article or message of interest which relates to the Nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. From the regular fb site, simply type the at sign which is shift and number two under the function keys along with their name. You can down arrow and press enter once you find the name. I say down arrow because after pressing the @ sign and the first letter of the name, it might not be the person you are looking for, unless you type the entire name and then it will pick it up. It's kind of like how the auto complete works in outlook. The mobile site on m.facebook.com site takes a little longer so I just tag from the regular site. Here is how you tag from the mobile site, if you have a day to spair... After typing the post, don't press enter, simply down arrow and there will be unlabled buttons, press spacebar on the last one, then the next thing you will need to do is press the letter b to navigate by buttons, and press spacebar on the first unlabeled button and then you will be in a dialog with your friends name, check the box of the friend you would like to tag, press x to navigate from checkbox to checkbox, press b until you here done, press spacebar, then press b until you here post and press spacebar to post the post. From the mobile site, when you read it back, if you were to let's say tag me, it will say, Kathy pinstock with Kimsan song and then whatever you posted. On the regular site, it will just say the persons name wherever you tagged them, for example, this is my post I am sending to link Kathy pingstop so I hope she doesn't think I am weird for writing such a stupid post. [JAWS-Users] accepting credit cards
I'm interested to know what it takes to accept credit cards. I have the Magtek 21040145 SureSwipe reader. I have both a desktop and laptop running Windows 7. I know there are charges for accepting credit cards, anywhere from 1.5 to over 3% plus 15 to 30 cents on top of that, depending on who you go with. The questions are who to go with that are accessible using the latest version of Jaws and who will allow for the use of the reader I have. In other words, which credit card accepting services will allow for the use of the reader I have and are accessible with Jaws? If I need additional software, what programs do I need and where do you get them and how much do they cost? Thanks for any info. This is information I was aware of, just answering the original question is all. I have owned a couple of Linksys and a net gear. The cisco is from the local cable company that runs my Tivo service. Naturally I had to lock it down after the technician left for his next job. Re: [JAWS-Users] I am using Webroot internet security successfully withJaws
Just a cautionary note. In the past, this Webroot security software blocked copy-and-paste functions in some programs. It also had a low score for blocking viruses in the AV-Comparatives test a couple years ago, as well as having high false positives. PC Mag has given it the Editor's Choice award in the past couple years, though. Steve - Original Message - From: Sharon Gosling To: jaws Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2015 12:49 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] I am using Webroot internet security successfully withJaws I am using Jaws 16 on a 64 bit laptop running Win 7 just for the record. I read about the webroot security program on the Kim Komando website and decided to try the free trial just to see if I could manage it with Jaws. I did do research on it first and was especially influenced by the article in PC magazine. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2470312,00.asp It is a web based program and will work even with another anti virus installed. I have Vipre but am totally paranoid about security since I do much online banking and shopping. The following link is a page that gives detailed information about the features of the program. In IE you can click on a feature and read the details. This did not work in Firefox. http://www.webroot.com/us/en/support/how-to-updates??utm_source=consumer-receiptutm_medium=emailutm_campaign=Learn%20More%20-%20Receipt I was able to install the program by myself although all interaction is through the Jaws cursor. Many settings are automatic and it shows up in the System Tray and tells you whether protection is on. Several choices are available when using the applications key on the System Tray icon. The main screen takes some patience using the Jaws cursor and the left mouse simulation key. I have spent much time yesterday and today to see just how well I was able to use the program with Jaws. Most of the settings are automatic so it is not necessary to change much. What I especially like is that they have an online console where you can find the information and it works well with Jaws and IE 11.It is a bit strange that you can press enter on many items on the webpage that are not marked as links but they work that way and allow the information to appear at the end of the list of choices. This did not work with Firefox which I generally use as my default browser. Also, when doing Google searches in IE Webroot gives an evaluation of each link which jaws reads. This does not work with jaws in Firefox. If you are interested in learning about the program or buying it at half price then go through the following link on the Kim Komando website. http://www.webroot.com/us/en/home/promotions/kim?utm_source=komandoutm_medium=komando-bannerutm_campaign=komando On Kim's site there is an option to download a free trial which I did and after the two weeks I decided to buy the program. But you can't just click on the Buy It button in the trial or they charge you the full price. You have to go back to the Kim Komando page and click buy it. This, too, works better in IE since the purchase page includes a $10 for a CD of the program which is totally unnecessary. I was able to uncheck the box using IE but not using Firefox. There is also a comparison chart for the three levels of protection. I decided to go for the second level, the Internet Security for 3 computers or gadgets because of the extra identity protection feature. This level also includes a password manager but I have not tried it yet. The following prices are the half off prices from the Kim Komando website. The antivirus is $19, the Internet Security is $29 and the Complete is $39 and includes 25 G of online back up. I don't want to mislead anyone that it is totally accessible with Jaws but it mostly is and I am pleased so far as most settings are automatic and I don't need the really advanced stuff. Yes, go to the iTunes store, press control-F and tab to where there is a checkbox for the iTunes store and check it. Then press control-F again and type in what you are looking for, press Enter. You can navigate the results by H for heading until you locate the category you are looking for. After buying the item, press control-1 to select music, then tab through the checkboxes and check where you want to go next.
