Re: [JAWS-Users] Getting rid of back stage view
It is something that comes on the new program that, when you open a word document gives you these choices about thank you cards and various grid type operations you might want to apply. So you always have to hit Cntl N for new document to get into Document One in Word unless you disarm those options. I did not know what it was at first, only that it was an inconvenience to me. Re: [JAWS-Users] Getting rid of back stage view
George, When you open programs in Office 2013, they by default open to the back stage view. This is where you can select any number of templates and such to use if you want to, but it is really just a pain in the A** if you know what I mean. It is hard sometimes to find a blank document to open to format f rom scratcdh and then create your document as you want it to look. So, by setting the programs to not open to the back stage view, you get the blank document that most people want to start with. Just another Niusance from Microsoft. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 is accessible with Sirius xm radio
It is a heck of a lot better than it used to be, I'll say that. Not quite as good as what you can do with the iPhone. I can browse the categories and subcategories to find the channels I want. That part works well, as does the skip forward and backward features. You need to allow Adobe Fklash for it to play. I can't create an on-demand channel, though. I should modify that statement--I can make it play a customized mix, but even though the controls are there, I can't seem to change them. Example, if you are on Prime Country and try to customize it, you will see the 1980's or 1990's-plus on the virtual cursor, but no matter how many times you hit the one you want, it doesn't change the existing setting--or I haven't figured how to do it yet. I haven'rt tried it with Firefox, but with IE11 it doesn't change. This is also true for the other options of less-twangy or more-twangy, and slower or more-boot-Skooty. But, for those who got frustrated with the old difficulties with the Sirius Xm on-line player, this is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was even a year ago. Don't worry about what people think--they don't do it very often! One way to be sure is what it says at the top line. If it says simply amazon then you are on the site for screen readers. IF is says Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs more then you are on the full site. One thing you may want to try is deleting cookies. Sign in with an amazon account. Then close your browser. When you use the amazon research it function at this point, you will not get results. cause: I suspect the reason for this is 2 fold. Amazon likely places a cookie on your computer when you sign in that tells the browser to go to the amazon.com/access site, rather than the full site. As a result, this screws with the research it utility. fix: Open your browser, go to www.amazon.com. then hit the sign out link. Close your browser. Now, try the research it function. I thought I remember that Paypal Credit/BillMeLater has an agreement like this. It seems to be very hit and miss to get it to become available. I think it has to do with the fact that JFW, or most screen readers I know of, don't scroll things like sighted people do. I realize I rarely post on the JAWS users list, but I'm helping a family member apply for online jobs and have run into an issue with one of the big online candidate profile sites that I think could be JAWS related. The issue is with People Answers. People Answers (http://www.peopleanswers.com) is a Website that companies use to host online assessments and questionnaires for job candidates. When I log in to the site to begin a job assessment from an employer using this portal, I'm forwarded to a page asking me to scroll through an agreement and click I Agree to except it. When I scroll through the agreement, JAWS reads, I Agree button unavailable and I do not agree unavailable. The sighted person I'm working with says the button is grayed out, and she can't click on I Agree. I've scrolled through the entire agreement at least three times this evening using Internet Explorer; I also tried this page under Mozilla Firefox with the same result. I've had similar issues with this portal in the past. So far, I've only gotten this button to populate correctly twice, and both times it's taken me an hour to scroll through the information on the agreement multiple times. The agreement itself consists of two sections: a privacy statement and terms of use. Both have separate links to allow you to open and print the privacy statement and terms of service, then close the page to return to the application. I've had to open and close the page multiple times to get the I agree buttons to populate correctly. This evening, I was unable to do so at all after scrolling to the bottom of the page at least three times under Internet Explorer 11 and once under Mozilla Firefox 40. Ally Bank has both checkboxes and radio buttons that behave like this. I managed to get one of them to work with NVDA once. Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications
Shane. Exactly the kind of recommendation I was afraid of, actually. The third party platform in question is something that several companies with online job applications I've come across use; there is no contact information or a direct way to reach them for tech support. I suspect it's the same way with your ISP unless you want to go through an overseas call center and have no one respond to the issue because they don't know the first thing about assistive technology. I'm sure whoever the person at the counter who took your cable boxes today got an earful and didn't comprehend half of what you said. Unlike your situation though, there is no indication of a check box before clicking on the I agree button. You're supposed to scroll to the bottom of this very comprehensive privacy / terms of service agreement with 12 long clauses that takes a half an hour to read if you just do a say all in JAWS; once you reach the bottom, the I agree and I do not agree buttons are supposed to populate. The couple of times I finally did get this page to work, JAWS will recognize the populated buttons correctly as form fields. Problem is getting the buttons to become enabled / populate in the first place. I'm also not sure if it's necessarily a JAWS issue or a problem with the site recognizing that you've actually read the privacy agreement thoroughly enough for its satisfaction and giving you the option to except or decline. My sighted relative is having basically the same problem, but she isn't web savvy enough to navigate the kind of complex, multi-part forms common in online job applications nowadays. I could demonstrate the issue but would have to go into my relatives job application to do this. Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications
This is not specifically related to your problem, but it is similar enough. I feel your pain. The ISP in my area has a site where you can make updates to your account, change payment information, and so on. The problem with the site is that at the bottom of the page where the changes are made, there is a check box that says I accept the terms and conditions. Only one problem, Jaws does not see this as a check box. Hitting space bar or enter does absolutely nothing. I spent 20 minutes using IE and Firefox trying to check that stupid box after updating credit card information. It took using the OCR function and making a guess as to where to click to finally get that box checked. I had to take a trip to the cable company today to turn in a couple boxes, and I let them have it. I wasn't rude, but flat out told them that their site was a pain to work with. All that to say it might be worth contacting the people who run the site and see what they can do. Now whether it will do any good is another story, but it can't hurt to try. I'm using JAWS 16, build 4350 with a 64-bit PC running Windows 10. I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with this online job portal and has any solutions to this. Thanks in advance. Chris. [JAWS-Users] online typing tests with JFW
I am wondering if there are online typing tests that work good with JFW? How would one go about getting one to read automatically? Awhile ago, I tried a practice run with a person trying to read for me, and they sometimes said words out of order or they stumbled on words. Some jobs have this as part of the assessment to apply, and I've never found a good way through it. The closest I've ever found was more like a tutorial thing that would artificially slow your rate by not registering beyond a mistake until you correct it, which wouldn't necessarily be comparable to what sighted people are doing. Are opportunities that may need this just ones we will have to pass by and look for those that don't, or is there a solution I'm not thinking of? If a rule is supposed to be executed for a current location in the tree view, the rule is checked, otherwise it is unchecked. For example, let's say that you have created three different rules: Rule A to be applied globally for all sites, Rule B for google.com, and Rule C for a specific page on cnn.com. If Global is selected in the tree, you will find that only Rule A will be checked in the list of rules, which means that no matter how many saved rules there are, only Rule A will run on every single page. If the currently selected item in the tree is google.com, then both Rule A and Rule B will be checked. Rule A is checked for google.com because it is supposed to run on all sites and Rule B is checked, because it was saved specifically for google.com. Rule C is not checked because it was saved for one of the pages on cnn.com and therefore does not apply to google.com. From the list of rules, you can enable or disable rules as well as delete, rename, or view properties of the selected rule. Enabling or Disabling a Rule Enabling or Disabling a Rule To enable or disable a rule for a site or page, do the following: From the browser where you have created Flexible Web rules, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, X to open the Flexible Web wizard. Choose the View and change where rules apply radio button. Move to the Finish button and press ENTER. This closes the wizard and opens a viewer that contains a treeview. Its root is Global, its level 1 branch is Current site, and its level 2 branch is Current page. The default location when the Viewer opens is Global. Navigate the tree, opening the Current Site or Current page branch as desired. Each branch will include the name of the site or page of a site. From the desired site or page whose rules you want to examine, press TAB to move to the next control. This is a checkable list view of rules. If the currently selected rule is being applied to the current page or site, it will be checked. Otherwise, any rules that appear in the list will be unchecked. If the rule is currently checked - that is, it is applied to the current page, site, or globally, and you just want to disable it without deleting it, then uncheck the rule by pressing SPACEBAR. Otherwise, if the rule is unchecked - that is, it is not applied to the current page or site, but you do wish to apply it, then check it by pressing SPACEBAR. When you are finished, press TAB to move to the Close button and press ENTER. To delete a rule, do the following: From the browser where you have created Flexible Web rules, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, X to open the Flexible Web wizard. Choose the View and change where rules apply radio button and press ENTER. When the Flexible Web viewer opens, press TAB to move to the list of rules. Navigate to the rule you want to delete and press the DELETE Key. Alternatively, press the APPLICATIONS Key to open the context menu and choose Delete. When asked if you want to continue, choose Yes to delete the rule, or No to cancel the deletion. HTHTake care. Mike This email was sent from my, iBarstool. [JAWS-Users] silencing a key
Hey folks, I'm looking under the setting center/manage key lables. I'm unable to mute the alt key. How can I mute this sucker? I have that key assigned for a nav key in combo with another; however, it keeps announcing alt, which gets annoying, so if it's not available in the manage key lables to mute what do I do?
