Hi Dave,

Try the following to turn the Insert Key Mode on / off. This only works in
the Settings Center Default All Applications.
1. Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2, to open the, Jaws Manager, arrow down,
Settings Center, & press enter.
With the Settings Center open press, control, shift , + D, to open the
Settings Center Default All Applications.
2. Arrow down to, Users, right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Insert Key Mode, to check or uncheck this box. Here's the
explanation of this option:
When selected, the INSERT key functions as a sticky key. Any key pressed
immediately after pressing the INSERT key is treated as if it were pressed
in combination with the INSERT key. This check box is cleared by default.

HTH
Take care.

Windows 8.1 isn't Werth the upgrade. There's no start menu, and it's clunky

Hell, even windows xp computers can run windows 10. So get the upgrade
why'll it's free until July 29th, 2016. I'm running windows 10 just fine on
my boot camped late 2012 iMac. How old is your computer?

When using the Microsoft media creation tool on an older windows 7 computer.
Be patient, it may take you several times to complete the upgrade
successfully.
if and when the upgrade fails.
Check for updates, restart your computer.
Go, to device manager, check manually, for driver updates.
I updated a friends older windows 7 computer, the one thing which was
holding back the upgrade was a graphics card driver update.
After I manually updated this, the upgrade went through.
his computer runs w-10 just fine now.
I have made audio and txt files for my windows 10 and jaws yahoo group.
Here is the steps for upgrading to W-10, which I have previously shared with
the Jaws users list.

*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version
depending on what system you have.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.
Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart your computer.
Check to see if a graphics card driver update is available.
Run the Microsoft media creation tool again.

[JAWS-Users] Malware Bytes Version 2.1.8 - Not Accessible?

Well, I finally purchased a premium version of Malware Bytes, and the
current version is 2.1.8. The User Interface seems very different from the
older version.

Has anyone else experienced the fact that we can't press any of the buttons?
Neither JAWS nor NVDA seem to work, although NVDA does give more information
as I move around.

Is there a trick to this new version, or should I downgrade to the older

John, thanks very much, you have given me some great info. I think I will
upgrade my old computer to 8.1 sometime this month and at a later date I
might upgrade my best computer to W10 but I will work on the older computer

Hi Fred,
It looks as if some of our members didn't quite understand your questions.
I'll try to help.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WINDOWS 7 AND 8.1
Windows 8.1 doesn't have the same setup as Windows 7. There is no Start
menu in the same configuration. Instead, when you press the Windows key,
you go to a list of apps which are arranged in column format. You can still
navigate to the Desktop by pressing WINDOWS+M or WINDOWS+D. It is still
possible to move items onto the Desktop. However, many of the things you
already have installed in your system will appear on the list as apps. I
have Office 2010 for example and all of the separate programs are listed.
To open one, all you have to do is navigate to it and press Enter.
The Search capability in 8.1 is great! If you are on that
list of apps, just start typing your search term and the system will
automatically jump to the item if it is on the system. It will also show
you documents pertaining to that item.
Once you get into any of your applications, 8.1 doesn't behave any
differently than Windows 7 did. It's faster, much faster than Windows 7.
Accessing the Control Panel is a bhit more difficult because 8.1 divides the
listings into groups sorted by their purpose. You can still reach the
Programs and Features list, however.
I believe that 8.1 was designed to be more attractive to
those who would be using it on a portable device. There are some
differences in the operations of 8.1 but essentially, it is a good operating
system. Many people hate it, Fred. It took some getting used to for me but
now, after working with it for a while, I find it so good that I'm in no
hurry to upgrade to Windows 10.
You were right about your older system not working with 10 by the way. It
requires more head room than you probably have on that older system.
I hope this helps.

I'm afraid that isn't the only way to fix the issue.

You can always download the Windows 10 setup file, and do a clean install of
the OS, which involves re-formatting your hard drive to that nothing is on
the drive when you finally install Windows 10.

I am also having this issue, so it may be that the tech guy you spoke to is
trying to pawn Windows 8.1 off on you because he knows he can't make any
money if you upgrade to Windows 10.

If you have sighted help, then do it this way, which is what I'm gearing up
to do, as I'm backing up all my files now. If you do not have sighted help,
download the Windows unattended setup from somewhere, and use that.

I'm sorry, I don't have a link for you since I do have sighted help to
assist me in the install, but I'm sure you can Google Windows unattended
Installation and you'll be good to go.

What ever you do, don't give into your tech guy telling you have to upgrade
to Windows 8.1, that's just ridiculous on it's face.

Good luck.

HI Kevin,

I'm afraid this method does not work as I attempted it, and the preparation
stalled at around 11 and 18%. I even tried to run the set up directly from
the MSI file instead of going through the download tool, and got the same
result. I'm afraid that the only way to do this is to do it the way I spoke
about in my last message.

I'm not quite sure why this is the case. I'm thinking that maybe there may
be a piece of hardware that is installed on my computer that is so old, that
the Windows 10 set up utility can't figure it out.

Not saying this is the case, I'm just thinking out loud, and this is
actually a working theory I've come up with.

I'm going to actually uninstall the actual piece of hardware I have on my

HTH
Take care.

Patti,

Not sure I understand that. Are you referring to the Insert key being a
"sticky" key in the Accessibility settings in Windows? Where would you check
the Insert key, otherwise?

Yes but if you got the insert mode checkbox checked.
Then all you have to do is press the insert key, and let up, and press the
windows key + C, and there you go, lol.

Hi Ed,

Using the standard desktop computer keyboard, I hold down the Insert / Jaws

Good luck.

Hi Fred,

I think you should know that if your computer can run Windows 8.1, then it
should have no problem running Windows 10, as it's the most slimmed down
version of Windows I've ever seen thus far from them, especially when you
take into account all the features it currently possesses.

The computer I'm upgrading is a Windows 7, 32 bit computer, and it is about
7 years old, and I should know, since I built the monster myself. LOL.

In any case, Windows 10 will give you less of a learning curve from 7 to 10,
not to mention handling your resources much more effectively.

What ever you decide to do, good luck.

to upgrade to W8.1 or W10. The computer is to old for W10 but I think it

between W7 and W8.1 as I think that might be the cheapest way to go.This is

Re: [JAWS-Users] doing a repair on Jaws

2015-09-06 Thread Mike B.
Hi Troy,

Below are 2 ways of repairing Jaws:

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.

Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, & 15 as
well.

1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into
the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main
root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the " C " drive open.
2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe
", and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ,"
C:\ " without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type
repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces,
Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

A 2nd way to do the same thing.
From: Brian Lee
Hello Jim,

You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that
you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of
JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the
download link.

ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64
bit.exe

After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the
installation:

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.

2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.

3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.

4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says "open colon edit combo", press
the end key and then press spacebar.

5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.

6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.

7. Follow the prompts.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Using the Start button in W-10

2015-09-06 Thread jim
For a better experience with using the Start button in windows 10.
You should in the beginning turn off the two check boxes under, cortana and
search settings.
What happens when these two items are checked, under cortana and search
settings.
Whenever you do a search from the start button edit box.
Dozens of internet results will be above your usual files and documents, and
programs results, which you are used to seeing.
This can be frustrating, especially when customizing your new w-10 computer.
You think you are entering on a certain file, but instead you are taken to a
bing, search results page on the internet by cortana.
This happened to me many times on my own computer, and on other peoples
computers who I was helping to customize for them.
After setting up your w-10 computer, you can then play with these settings and
get used to how they work.
I hope this helps those of you who have been frustrated with this and have
mentioned this issue to me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade

2015-09-06 Thread jim

I'm going to actually uninstall the actual piece of hardware I have on my
computer that is so old, even Windows is afraid to touch it with a 10 foot
installer, LOL, and see what happens when I try the installer again.

Oh, and just for your information, the piece of hardware is an old
SoundBlaster Sound card that's giving me the trouble, I believe, so watch
for an update tomorrow at some point.

why not try getting the free windows 10 upgrade. if you got the get windows
10 notification just click it and reserve a copy. then just use the win 10
media creation tool to upgrade your computer.

2015-09-06 Thread John Justice
Hi Fred,
It looks as if some of our members didn't quite understand your questions.

Good luck.
