[JAWS-Users] latest jaws has CPU time runaway

2016-07-16 Thread valiant8086

Hi.

I think I should be putting this on the support email, but I wanted to
mention it here tonight at least. I've got the latest jaws update. For
me on a Lenovo Yoga2pro running windows 10 build 10586, it's using way
too many cpu cycles. Jaws usually uses around 3 percent cpu time. This
latest one is using 23 percent or there abouts and causing my poor yoga
to run a lot hotter than necessary and generally wasting plenty of
electricity. If this can be reproduced by others than just me this is a
huge showstopper, this update should be pulled immediately and not
re-added until fixed. There is a small yes very small chance this could
affect the lifetime of some unsuspecting user's computers if they may
not be aware of this.

Now, having said that, don't everyone just assume if you got the last
update that just recently came out that you could be having trouble.
I've not yet had the chance to try to reproduce it on any but this one
computer of mine so if you don't think your computer feels hot then I
wouldn't worry about it. I haven't rebooted my computer yet since the
initial reboot that came after the jaws update either.

If you know you have the issue and you can confirm it by looking at your
task manager application, would you tell us as much on this list or at
least make an effort to contact support? Huge thanks everybody!

Hi Gang,

Every time I open a new tab by clicking on a link in a webpage I get what I
think is a box that jaws reads as the link name, pin to, remove. Is this
normal? And, how can I turn it off?

I am using Win 7 and jaws 16

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Narrator

2016-07-16 Thread David Moore

Hi,
To use Narrator on the desktop,
You must press caps lock+D to hear the current desktop item you are on, and
you must press the left and right arrows to hear other icons on your
desktop. The up and down arrow keys will not work on the desktop. Make sure
you go to the Narrator window and memorize the key commands. They are
totally different than using JAWS or NVDA.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Narator

2016-07-16 Thread David Moore

Hi,
JAWS gets so quiet when Narrator is running that you cannot hear JAWS, so
you can have both JAWS and Narrator running at the same time. Narrator has
what is called Audio Ducking, so JAWS gets really quiet. When you work in
the win10 mail app, you will want to turn Narrator on while JAWS is running,
and then you will be able to access the auto populating list of names and
emails that are there while you type in the to: edit box. Then, just turn
Narrator right back off, and keep using JAWS to fill in the subject and type
the message.

Take care, all

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS dictionary annoyance

2016-07-16 Thread Adrian Spratt
Thanks to Dave, Mike and (off-list) Mitch, the problem was solved I the
simplest way: delete the entry. In case anyone had the same dilemma I had about
this process, first make sure you're in the right dictionary. In my case, that
was the default. Once the default dictionary is open, tab over to a list that,
on my system, begins at the top with "French." Arrow down from here to
"English," assuming this is the language you were working in, then tab to the
list of changes you've made. I notice that the most recent changes are near the
bottom. In my case, that was fortunate because the symbol I'd used wasn't
verbalized before I created the dictionary entry. Then tab to "delete." When
you close the dictionary, JAWS will remind you to save any changes.

Hi. The other day, I added a JAWS dictionary item, but the pronunciation
got assigned to the character preceding the word, not the word itself. The
result has been annoying. Here's the explanation, and I hope someone has a
solution.

When invoking the dictionary, focus must have been on the space preceding
the word I wanted. Carelessly, I just tabbed over to the replace field and
typed in my preferred pronunciation. As a result, the space character was
assigned that pronunciation.

This is what makes the problem complex. It wasn't just any space. I'm
guessing it's what I think is called a hard space (created with
shift-spacebar) and possibly a space that's automatically coded into
documents after a period, since the problem often occurs with the space
following a period.

Now, whenever JAWS is in "say all" mode, it will speak this character as
"space." I emphasize that it doesn't do so for most space characters; just
this one that I accidentally adjusted.

Here's what I've tried. I copied the character into the JAWS dictionary and
pressed spacebar in the replacement field. It made no difference. I
re-copied the character in the JAWS dictionary and this time tried to save
the entry without entering anything in the replacement field. But JAWS
requires that something be entered there.

One more bit of background. I recently endured a hard drive failure. Ever
since recovering my applications and reinstalling JAWS, this particular
character showed up as a non-verbalized blank. Before the hard drive crash,
JAWS simply verbalized "space," but only when I was navigating
character-by-character. It was not verbalized in "say all." Now that
character is verbalized as "space" no matter what mode I'm in.

No other possible solution is coming to me. Any ideas?

Adrian:

Thanks for these great instructions for determining whether a Windows 7
computer is 32 or 64-bit!

I have some other instructions for doing this here, but yours are by far the
eassiest!

Zoe, if you have win7, press the Windows key together with the pause key
(the top right key on a desktop keyboard). Then switch to the JAWS cursor
and arrow down. On my computer, I'm told I have a 64-bit system. It takes
several presses of the down arrow key to reach this line.

Hi Mike, I have never updated jaws from a download link, I have always
updated from the pop up that jaws gives you when starting up your computer.

. We have been working with Microsoft to improve the accessibility of the
Mail app included in Windows 10. After installing this update, read-only
messages you open are now read using the Virtual Cursor, similar to Outlook.

Additionally, just like in Word or Outlook, JAWS now announces when you turn

on or
off the bold, italic, and underline attributes in editable messages using
the CTRL+B, CTRL+I, and CTRL+U commands. While users should notice improved
performance with the currently released Mail app, Microsoft has made a
number of changes

as well to improve the experience which will be included in a Windows 10
update that will be available in the coming weeks.
. Due to issues with obtaining results from 411.com, the People Search
Research It lookup source has been updated to use the web site 10digits.us.
To search,
you now only need to enter the person's first and last name. If you receive
too many results, you can narrow the search further by typing the person's
first and last name followed by a comma, and then the city and state, or zip

code. For example, John Smith, Saint Petersburg FL, or John Smith, 33716.
. Addressed an issue where the INSERT+4 keystroke could not be found using
the JAWS Command Search feature. This command opens a dialog box where you
can select from a list of items such as Euro, Yen, Pounds, Trademark,
Copyright,

bullet, plus or minus, etc. and the symbol for that item will be inserted at
the cursor position in the currently open document. If you know of any other
keystrokes that are missing from the JAWS Command Search, or are not easily
found, please provide us with the name of the keystroke and the search terms

you are using to locate it so we can update the command descriptions with
this information to make them easier to find.
. When entering text in contracted braille using the APH Refreshabraille
display, addressed a reported issue where contracted words beginning with
dots
4-5-6 were not being correctly translated.
. This update contains new scripts from Corel to add JAWS support for the X8

versions of WordPerfect, Quatro Pro, and Presentations.
. Dictionary pronunciation rules have been added so that JAWS now correctly
speaks the name "Ai Squared".
. Resolved an issue with the Weather Research It lookup source in the German

version of JAWS not displaying the temperature.
. In response to customer requests, you can now configure braille input when

the braille language is set to English - United Kingdom.

Another method would be to look on the root of your system drive. Find your
programs folder and arrow down once. If you land on a programs X 86 folder
then you have a 64 bit system. If not then you have a 32 bit.
