Actually, I don't think g mail uses POP these days, could be wrong.
But as the Jeff said, IMAP is much more versatile than POP.

Kimsan,

Agreed, the latest version of JAWS locates neither links nor edit fields.
Two points of interest:

When I press insert-F6, JAWS tells me, in effect, that it isn't a virtual
document.

Second, when I turn off the virtual cursor, the tab items I find tell me
it's an Apple website. So maybe try with your iPhone.

What I mean by appropriate information is that the website

Hi Jo,

You need MS Word to open this file. The file extension, .doc, is the old
file extension for MS Word prior to Word 2007, & possibly 2003, but I'm not
sure about 2003. If you have a newer version of Word installed, you will
also need to have the, Compatibility Pack, installed. This program allows
newer versions of Office to open, read, & edit older files from older Office
versions.

If you need to know how to assign a program to open this file, now this is a
totally different set of steps. First we need to know if you have Office
installed, & possibly what operating system you're running depending on your
needs.
Take care, Mike.

Good afternoon all;

Most likely she will be learning to use, windows live mail, or, windows 10

Does anyone have a suggestion for using a spellcheck program? She doesn't
have office.
So a stand alone spellchecker program will be necessary.
In advance, thanks for the help.

Ok; so I did a google search, apparently, the windows 10 home app, has its
own spell checker.
To make changes,

If you want to change the grammar settings follow these super easy steps:

1. Use the Windows + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app.
2. Navigate to Devices and go to Typing.
3. Under Spelling, switch the Autocorrect misspelled words and Highlight
misspelled words to the Off position.
The default I believe is on.
There's a few check boxes in there.

Hmm, learn something new every day.

There's a setting in quick settings (JAWS key+v) that might help. Make sure
"Address list autocomplete announcement" is checked. If that doesn't fix it,
look down for other possibilities in quick settings. Otherwise, your answer is

Agreed, the latest version of JAWS locates neither links nor edit fields.
Two points of interest:

Second, when I turn off the virtual cursor, the tab items I find tell me

What I mean by appropriate information is that the website

Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Try WordPad.

2017-05-24 Thread Flor Lynch
There was, is (or should be?) a free Microsoft Wordviewer somewhere that
would read the .doc file, which you cannot use to edit because it only reads
the document. Perhaps using a search of Microsoft Wordviewer will yield
results. It's a free program.

Thanks, Dave, but I already know this. However, I don't have any version

Adrian, actually, .doc was not in the list, but .docx was in the list,
and it's a .docx file I'm trying to read.

Wordpad does open the file, but it's got these backslashes at the
beginning of some lines. My assumption is that those are some form of
formatting code that isn't being interpreted properly by Wordpad. My
concern is that if Wordpad isn't interpreting these codes properly, what
else might it not be doing properly? What else might I encounter in
other .docx files? I suppose it's possible that these are intentional
and they appear the same in the file opened in Word, but it sure doesn't
seem likely.

Actually, Judy's suggestion to copy the content to Notepad worked. The
backslashes didn't transfer over. I suppose this is an acceptable
work-around, at least until it doesn't work.

Those steps did not work for me. For one thing, the "wordpad" file type

the backslash characters at the beginning of several of the lines.

Is it possible that this file can only be opened by Word? Is there no way

Arrow to the file you want, press enter.

The results should now be more in line with the original .doc or .docx

Important tip! Be sure to check that file type combo box every time
you open WordPad. The default setting, for example, is only for

I'm running Windows 10 Anniversary edition. Wordpad didn't work very
well for me. It didn't seem to translate everything properly. By that,
I mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the

Specifically in the example I tried, there was a backslash (\)

document might have looked in Word, but the formatting seemed unlikely.
All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank
lines.

Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case,
some instructions on how to configure Wordpad would be appreciated.
Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access

Re: [JAWS-Users] new user, jaws repair

2017-05-24 Thread Adrian Spratt
No, a JAWS repair does not change your settings. Here are the instructions I
received from FS/VFO in February.

First, make sure you have the .exe file on your system for the JAWS build
you're running. You can download it from the FS/VFO website.
Unlike before, it doesn't seem to matter where you keep it on your system.
Close all running apps.
Highlight the JAWS .exe file.
Press shift-F10.
Arrow up to "Copy as path." Press enter.
Open the run dialog with Windows key-r.
Press control-v, then spacebar, then / (the forward slash key), then the word
"type", spacebar, and then the word "repair."
Let me try that command line a different way. After pressing control-v followed
by the spacebar, continue with /type repair
Then press enter.

Note. The JAWS repair can take maybe twenty minutes to run, so patience is
required. Listen for any verbalizations that might require some action,
although the only thing you'll probably need to do is reboot when the repair is
done.

[JAWS-Users] insert key stopped speaking

2017-05-24 Thread net bat66

hi, sorry this is so long.
there is a option to use the desktop keyboard layout with the scroll lock key
as the jaws key.
the problem is i didn't like it and set it back to the insert for the jaws key
in the default settings menu. the insert key still works as the jaws key but
the insert key no longer talks.

i did this in the default settings. the key is set to speak. it is not muted.
with windows live mail loaded the settings for this say it is still set to the
scroll lock and says it can only be changed in the default settings and press
shift control d to switch to the default settings. but in the default it still
says it is useing the insert key.

so now what.
even with wlm the insert key is still the jaws key. not the scroll lock.
this is where i stand.
the default settings say it is useing the insert key, the wlm script? if this
is where it is comeing from says it is useing the scroll lock key. it isn't.

i can't change it so both are useing the same key.
thanks ,ihope.

Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?

2017-05-24 Thread Tim Ford
You may also find, as I did, that you need to change the file type combo box
to the "all files" option, the bottom of the 5 choices. Otherwise, all you
would find in your file list would be the Jarte default file format, .rtf.

Specifically, with Jarte running, press control + o to open the file
directory dialog. This opens a typical and very familiar File Explorer
dialog. Tab once to the file type combo. The 5 listed options are, in
order, as follows:

Rich Text Format (*.rtf)
Word Documents (*.doc)
Word 2007 Documents (*.docx)
Plain Text (*.txt)
All files (*.*)

[Note that to capture this list, I used the JAWS speech history option, JAWS
key + space bar, then h. The resulting window has all this in plain text
that I just copied and pasted]

On that list, if you want to see just .doc, .docx, or .txt files only, arrow
to the format you want and press enter. If you want to see all files in the
folder, arrow to the bottom and press enter on "all files".

Now you can tab, or shift tab twice, to the list of files, and there they
are!

I have not figured out a way to have Jarte maintain the all-files setting,
so remember to first set the file type box whenever you want to use the
Jarte file directory.

The hint below about first finding a file and then doing the "open with
Jarte" option also works.

Highlight the.doc file you wish to open and hit Enter. You should be

file. There should be a list box that includes Jarte on the list of
programs. Select Jarte and hit Okay, and Jarte should open the .doc file

2017-05-24 Thread Maria Campbell
The problem is that the default scan is always a quick scan, and I
believe that from time to time a full scan should be conducted. This is
done by going to the virus and protection tab, then going to advanced
scan, and there is the choice to do a full scan.

The insert+Tab, repeats the control and its current setting in the settings
area of W-10 with Jaws. Think of it as a Jaws repeat keystroke for the
highlighted item on the screen. In the settings area you open a combo box with
ALT+Down arrow, use the arrow key to find a different choice, press Enter to
select the new choice and close the combo box.

Dave,

So, landmarks and regions are different, despite something I read on the FS
website before posting my previous message. I'm sure you've tested the

Adrian,

Okay, thanks. I thought in some past versions of JAWS we could also jump to
landmarks using the semicolon or something else. I'm working on a Beta web site
where the developers are using a landmark rather than a region for parts, and
they asked. I recommended they stick with regions or even use headers to help
distinguish areas of the site.

Hi, Dave.

AI believe a landmark is the same as a region. The shortcut for "region" is
"r." for those who aren't familiar with the "r" navigation command, it's
extremely useful. For example, press "r" until you hit "main region" or
something similar, and you skip over a lot of boilerplate.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!

2017-05-24 Thread Greg Wocher

Hello,

When using Jart you need to be aware that it does not allow you to
navigate thru tables like you can in word. Tables will not be layed out
like they are in word. This is due to the backend engine that Jart uses
for its text. It uses the same engine as wordpad. In Jart you will not
be able to use control plus alt plus the arrow keys to navigate tables.
If you do not need to worry about this then yes Jart is a good
alternative word processor to use.

Hi Andy,

I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is
just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully
compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find
it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and
find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much
of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice
regular old menu system.

So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can
already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor.
It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad.

A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose
of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file
list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By
default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list,
you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format.

Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want
to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the
all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter.
Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all
folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your
list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of
folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there
is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet,
and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type
box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files
and folders are!

I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description
of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation
file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely
perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity.

The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy!
