If you have a newer version of Word installed, you will also need to have the, Compatibility Pack, installed. This program allows newer versions of Office to open, read, & edit older files from older Office versions. There's a setting in quick settings (JAWS key+v) that might help. Make sure "Address list autocomplete announcement" is checked. If that doesn't fix it, look down for other possibilities in quick settings. Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Try WordPad.
There was, is (or should be?) a free Microsoft Wordviewer somewhere that would read the .doc file, which you cannot use to edit because it only reads the document. Perhaps using a search of Microsoft Wordviewer will yield results. It's a free program. -Original Message- From: Audiobookfan Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 4:37 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Wordpad does open the file, but it's got these backslashes at the beginning of some lines. My assumption is that those are some form of formatting code that isn't being interpreted properly by Wordpad. My concern is that if Wordpad isn't interpreting these codes properly, what else might it not be doing properly? What else might I encounter in other .docx files? I suppose it's possible that these are intentional and they appear the same in the file opened in Word, but it sure doesn't seem likely. Actually, Judy's suggestion to copy the content to Notepad worked. The backslashes didn't transfer over. I suppose this is an acceptable work-around, at least until it doesn't work. Re: [JAWS-Users] new user, jaws repair
No, a JAWS repair does not change your settings. Here are the instructions I received from FS/VFO in February. First, make sure you have the .exe file on your system for the JAWS build you're running. You can download it from the FS/VFO website. Unlike before, it doesn't seem to matter where you keep it on your system. Close all running apps. Highlight the JAWS .exe file. Press shift-F10. Arrow up to "Copy as path." Press enter. Open the run dialog with Windows key-r. Press control-v, then spacebar, then / (the forward slash key), then the word "type", spacebar, and then the word "repair." Let me try that command line a different way. After pressing control-v followed by the spacebar, continue with /type repair Then press enter. Note. The JAWS repair can take maybe twenty minutes to run, so patience is required. Listen for any verbalizations that might require some action, although the only thing you'll probably need to do is reboot when the repair is done. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of net bat66 Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 12:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] new user, jaws repair how do you do a jaws repair? and would it erase the settings i changed? i can not turn on speech for the insert key since i messed with the jaws key frome the insert to the scroll lock and back again. it is not muted in the keyboard labeler. hi, sorry this is so long. there is a option to use the desktop keyboard layout with the scroll lock key as the jaws key. the problem is i didn't like it and set it back to the insert for the jaws key in the default settings menu. the insert key still works as the jaws key but the insert key no longer talks. i did this in the default settings. the key is set to speak. it is not muted. with windows live mail loaded the settings for this say it is still set to the scroll lock and says it can only be changed in the default settings and press shift control d to switch to the default settings. but in the default it still says it is useing the insert key. so now what. even with wlm the insert key is still the jaws key. not the scroll lock. this is where i stand. the default settings say it is useing the insert key, the wlm script? if this is where it is comeing from says it is useing the scroll lock key. it isn't. i can't change it so both are useing the same key. thanks ,ihope. Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?
You may also find, as I did, that you need to change the file type combo box to the "all files" option, the bottom of the 5 choices. Otherwise, all you would find in your file list would be the Jarte default file format, .rtf. Specifically, with Jarte running, press control + o to open the file directory dialog. This opens a typical and very familiar File Explorer dialog. Tab once to the file type combo. The 5 listed options are, in order, as follows: Rich Text Format (*.rtf) Word Documents (*.doc) Word 2007 Documents (*.docx) Plain Text (*.txt) All files (*.*) [Note that to capture this list, I used the JAWS speech history option, JAWS key + space bar, then h. The resulting window has all this in plain text that I just copied and pasted] On that list, if you want to see just .doc, .docx, or .txt files only, arrow to the format you want and press enter. If you want to see all files in the folder, arrow to the bottom and press enter on "all files". Now you can tab, or shift tab twice, to the list of files, and there they are! I have not figured out a way to have Jarte maintain the all-files setting, so remember to first set the file type box whenever you want to use the Jarte file directory. The hint below about first finding a file and then doing the "open with Jarte" option also works. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Defender
Yes, the windows defender security center in the Creators update, is a lot more complex. But honestly, it takes care of itself very well. Just run it from time to time, if you miss the sound notification, press Windows key+A, for the action center and down arrow and hear the results of the scan. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2017 6:16 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Defender In the Anniversary version Defender is pretty much accessible. Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?
Highlight the.doc file you wish to open and hit Enter. You should be presented with a dialog that prompts you to choose a program to open the file. There should be a list box that includes Jarte on the list of programs. Select Jarte and hit Okay, and Jarte should open the .doc file for you. You can also open the .doc file in Word Pad, if it isn't too heavy on layout. Just right click it and choose the Word Pad program in the Open With . . . dialog. --- I am, therefore I think. Ande For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Dave, So, landmarks and regions are different, despite something I read on the FS website before posting my previous message. I'm sure you've tested the semicolon on a webpage. I just did, and JAWS verbalized: "No mouse-clickable elements." I thought in some past versions of JAWS we could also jump to landmarks using the semicolon or something else. I'm working on a Beta web site where the developers are using a landmark rather than a region for parts, and they asked. I recommended they stick with regions or even use headers to help distinguish areas of the site. Re: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!
Hello, When using Jart you need to be aware that it does not allow you to navigate thru tables like you can in word. Tables will not be layed out like they are in word. This is due to the backend engine that Jart uses for its text. It uses the same engine as wordpad. In Jart you will not be able to use control plus alt plus the arrow keys to navigate tables. If you do not need to worry about this then yes Jart is a good alternative word processor to use. When you first go to open your file list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list, you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format. Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter. Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet, and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files and folders are!
