Re: [JAWS-Users] Stopping Firefox auto updates

2017-11-19 Thread wayne smith
For those who missed this I followed Kevin's instructions on both of my
machines and it seemed to have worked. On my backup machine I just brought
up Firefox and I got the usual notice, Do you want to let this program make
changes to your computer? I clicked, No, and the regular Firefox came up.
I then followed Kevin's simple steps and it looks like it did the job.

Hello all- I have been reading the posts on the new Firefox version that
will be like Edge and not accessible. I just opened my Firefox browser and
it updated to the current version automatically. Is there a place where I
can stop automatic updates so I don't get updated out of business?

Thanks in advance for any help.

[JAWS-Users] Firefox 57/quantum

2017-11-19 Thread JM Casey
Hey everyone.

I chose to defer the update for as long as possible, but this evening when I
loaded up Firefox, it snapped up and installed the 57 update right away.
Whenever I load it with JAWS running, now, I get the message "in-tab browsing
is disabled due to incompatibility with your accessibility software. Please
update your screen-reader or switch to Firefox ESR version". I was sort of
expecting something like this, but I also noted that many people on the NVDA
list were using Firefox 57 successfully with that screen-reader. Although I was
unsuccessful in reading a single webpage with JAWS, I too note that FF 57 seems
to work basically fine with NVDA, though it is definitely a bit slower. Now,
I'm running JAWS 18, and am not upgrading to JAWS 2018 anytime soon as it seems
my license is only good for JAWS 18. I'm getting used to NVDA anyway and if
things continue as they are, I may very well just end up using that product for
most things. But I did wonder if anyone was successfully using Firefox 57 with
JAWS 2018?

George, in case there's any confusion, JAWS 19 is what FS eventually
released as JAWS 2018. Amusing that their 2018 OCR message betrays the
original intent to continue with the previous version numbering sequence. As
I'm sure you know, 2018 introduces an expanded version of Convenient OCR. I
have yet to try it because 2018 gives me new Outlook and IE11 problems, but
it looks as though Rebecca gives a nice introduction.

with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu

Recognize with JAWS.

I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said

Started.

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or
control a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word,
notepad would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to Delete an AutoComplete Entry in IE

2017-11-19 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi Dave,

Actually, you can up and down arrow through IE11's autocomplete suggestions.
However, unlike the case with Outlook, you can't delete anything there.

I figured the answer lay in the files list you access via
tools/options/general, but the test I tried didn't help. Staples shows up in my
IE autocomplete list, which I'd very much like to eliminate, but I can't find a
single Staples file in the temporary files list.

I'm not sure there is a good answer to your question. As you realize, you can
delete everything, in which case your autocomplete list will be empty, but
apparently not individual autocomplete addresses. Still, you may find a hint at
a webpage I found. You're not going to be one of those listers who bites my
head off for giving you a link to do your own exploring, right!! So here it is:

AutoComplete

Have you ever started typing name or email address into Outlook's To field
only to have the feature automatically fill in the wrong address? It's very
easy to clean out infrequently used names in Outlook's AutoComplete. Start
typing an email address. When Outlook displays address options, use the Up
and Down arrow keys to highlight the name/address you want to remove, and
then press DELETE. Press the Delete key to remove the name.

Well, I use JAWS 18, and have tried this a few times. I was told never to
expect great results from Convenient OCR, and indeed, I've never really got
any. But sometimes it's enough to tell roughly what people are talking about
when they post an image with text in it. You'll just have to experiment and
see. I know the OCR is supposed to be improved in JAWS 2018, so you should get

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using JAWS OCR

2017-11-19 Thread Adrian Spratt
George, in case there's any confusion, JAWS 19 is what FS eventually released
as JAWS 2018. Amusing that their 2018 OCR message betrays the original intent
to continue with the previous version numbering sequence. As I'm sure you know,
2018 introduces an expanded version of Convenient OCR. I have yet to try it
because 2018 gives me new Outlook and IE11 problems, but it looks as though
Rebecca gives a nice introduction.

Rebecca,
I followed your suggestion in my JAWS 18, Windows 10 system and used a PDF
file. When I press enter JAWS gives me this strange dialog box message:
"Convenient OCR is not available unless JAWS 19 or later is running"
Seems that method does not work for all... Would be nice if it did.

There have been several questions about OCR and saving the scanned results.
This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please.
Smile.

I'm using Windows 10 1709 Creator update, Jaws 2018 and Word 2010.

I have several image files saved so was able to test using these formats"
PDF and JPG.

Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the

"alert, empty document,"

message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o,
then d,

with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu
key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to

Recognize with JAWS.

I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said

Started.

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or control
a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word, notepad
would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned in
Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different.

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

Recognize with JAWS.

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting to
be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy, smile,
and kept giving me information about

non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my
table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a
better option in this case.

When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had
when scanned by JAWS.

At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the
information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no longer
cross, muttering about tables, so all was well.

For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile.

Rebecca

Have you ever started typing name or email address into Outlook's To field
only to have the feature automatically fill in the wrong address? It's very
easy to clean out infrequently used names in Outlook's AutoComplete. Start
typing an email address. When Outlook displays address options, use the Up
and Down arrow keys to highlight the name/address you want to remove, and
then press DELETE. Press the Delete key to remove the name.

No, I haven’t explored Cortana yet. I don’t have a microphone yet. I almost
bought one last week, and wish I had, because the price went up by about 15

That’s pretty good as long as what you want to do is tell it to do stuff with

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it

Seems that method does not work for all... Would be nice if it did.

There have been several questions about OCR and saving the scanned results.
This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please.

I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or
control a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word,
notepad would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned
in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different.

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

Recognize with JAWS.

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting
to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy,
smile, and kept giving me information about

non-uniform tables, row and column information.

Word was no
longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well.

For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile.

[JAWS-Users] Anyone on here using J dictate or J say?

2017-11-19 Thread Mary Otten
I’m guessing this question might be seen as a bit too general to be of interest
to the list. So please feel free to reply privately if you want. I don’t want
to clog the list with stuff folks don’t care about. I am curious about the J
dictate and J say. I read the blurb on Brian‘s website. I certainly don’t need
to control my entire computer via voice. But there are aspects of it that sound
like they could be rather useful. I mean, if you can really use natural
language to do all sorts of stuff, finding things changing settings etc.,
without having to memorize all the stuff that goes with that in terms of
keyboarding and what keystroke does work, it could be kind of nice. Anyway,
please do feel free to reply off list at the address I will put right here. I
guess I’m looking for Star Trek. Smile.

Very much appreciated, Rebecca. I’m glad this is possible. I had actually
looked at the FS site about their Openbook program, although I’ve been a
K1000 user for a very, very very long time. But it looks like OB
doesn’t run under win-10 based on what I saw, which would be a show stopper
for sure for me.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] windows 10 mail questions

I hope this is not off topic. I’m using the above named program with Jaws
2018. On my old Windows xp machine with its equally old email client, this
account was set to pop3. That’s all the old email program supported. There
was a setting in that email client that allowed me to delete messages from
the server once they had been downloaded. I know that with gmail on my
phone, I have the option of archiving deleted messages or permanently
deleting them after, I think it is 30 days. I can’t find anything like that
in the windows 10 mail app, which, I guess, means that deleted messages are
going to stay on the server forever, which is not at all what I want. If
there is a setting like what I have described in this app, where is it and
how do I get to it?

Also, I am seeing all of the emails I sent showing up in my messages list in
the inbox in the mail app. That never happened on my xp machine, and it does
not happen in any mail account I have on my phone, and it is not something I
want. I don’t mind a separate sent mail folder, but I sure don’t want to see
what I send in my inbox. How can I make this stop? Thanks in advance for any
help.
