2018-01-09 Thread Lenny McHugh
I am running IE 11 and win 7. For a few weeks this message pops up when I
try to read the local paper as well as a few other random sites. I did a
repair on IE 11 with no help. I also ran combofix again with no help.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] [jaws] jaws keystrokes for OE

2018-01-09 Thread Mike B.
Hi TJ,
Here's an OE tutorial, it's bound to have some keystrokes in it:

Outlook Express Guide

Outlook Express Guide

A guide for Jaws users, written by Chorlton Workshop for Henshaws Society
for Blind People.

Introduction

This is a guide to the email client, Outlook Express version 6, running
under Windows XP.

There are a large number of configuration options for Outlook Express. In
the
Configuration
section at the end of this document, there is a recommended set of options.
In this guide, it's assumed that your copy of Outlook Express has this
configuration.

Main Window
Components of the window

The window is divided into two columns. In the left hand column, there are
are two lists: the Folders tree followed by the Address Book list. The right
hand column is taken up with the Messages list. As with all programs, along
the top of the window there's a title bar, followed by a menu bar. Along the
bottom of the window, there's a status bar. Some of these components are
described in the following sections.

Title bar

The title bar contains the name of the folder selected in the Folders tree,
followed by the name of the program - Outlook Express. To read the title
bar,
press INSERT + T.

Folders tree

One folder in the tree is always selected, and the messages in this folder
are displayed in the Messages list. The top level folder is Outlook Express,
and this has a child folder, Local Folders. The latter folder has the
following children:

. Inbox. For incoming messages.
. Outbox. A waiting area for outgoing messages.
. Sent Items. After you send a message, a copy is placed in this folder.
. Deleted Items. When you delete a message from a folder ( except this
folder ), a copy is saved here, just in case you change your mind.
. Drafts. This contains messages either that you were working on when the
computer crashed, or that you save from a new message window to send later.

Messages list

This contains the messages in the folder which is selected in the Folders
tree.

. When a message is selected, Jaws says if it is unread, and if it contains
any attachments.
. The messages are normally sorted by the date on which they were received,
with the most recent messages at the top. However, they can be sorted by
other
fields, and in either ascending or descending order by using the Sort By
sub-menu on the View menu.

Address book list

This is a list of the contacts in the Address Book. It's often easier to use
this list, rather than the address book proper.

Status bar

This contains both the total number, and the number of unread messages in
the Messages list. To read the Status bar, press INSERT + PAGE DOWN.

Moving around the main window
. As for any window, to move to the menu bar press ALT, and to leave it,
press ESC.
. You can move between the Folders tree, Messages list, Contacts list etc.
by pressing TAB. You can move in the opposite direction between these lists
by
pressing SHIFT + TAB.
. You can change the selection in any of the lists by using UP and DOWN
ARROW, HOME, END, and the first letter of an item.

Reading Email
Receiving messages
. When you start Outlook Express, it downloads any new messages from your
Internet Service Provider ( If you have a dial-up connection, you will be
prompted
to connect to the internet ).
. If you want to check for new messages at any other time, press CTRL + M.
. If you have a broadband connection, the program will automatically check
for new messages every 5 minutes ( this time is set on the General page of
the
Options dialog - see the
Configuration
 section of this guide ).

Opening a message
1. Select a folder in the Folders tree ( this will often be the Inbox ).
2. Select a message in the Messages list, and press ENTER. A message window
opens.

Viewing message window

The window includes the following components:

. Title bar, which contains the subject of the message.
. A pane which gives the values of the following fields: From, Date, To, Cc,
Bcc, Subject, and Attach.
. A pane which contains the message. When the window opens, Jaws starts
reading this message.

Tasks:

. Press ALT + 1, or ALT + 2, ... or ALT + 6, to read the fields: From, Date,
To, Cc, Bcc, and Subject.
. To print the message, press CTRL + P.
. To open or save an attachment, see the following sections,
Opening an attachment
, and
Saving an attachment.
. To delete the message, choose Delete Message from the File menu.
. To read another message, you don't have to go back to the main window. To
read the next message in the Messages list, press ALT + RIGHT ARROW. To read
the previous message, press ALT + LEFT ARROW.
. To close the message window, press ESC.

Opening an attachment

In the message window:

1. Move to the attachment list either by pressing INSERT + A, or by TABBING
to it. If there are an number of attachments in the list, select the
attachment
you want to open. Press ENTER.
2. A Mail attachment window opens. In this window, press SHIFT + TAB to m

The text and background is intentionally done as Dave said. It is meant to
make it impossible to be recognized by OCR. I have heard a few audio CAPTCHs
that, without distortion, would say something like "Jim had two cows and a
horse. He sold a cow. How many horses were left? "This example is overly
simplistic, still there are better ways to prove your humanness than the
current tests. As someone with both vision and hearing limitations, I hate
all regular forms of CAPTCHAs.

using jaws 2018 I’m having trouble opening my email messages from
www.office.com
I would assume when you arrow to a message icon I would just need to press
enter on the message icon to open and I would beable to read the message line
by line with the arrow keys. but for some reason when I press enter on an icon
the message doesn’t open. but when I select a message jaws will read it. I
prefer to read an email line by line that way I can take my time when jaws is
reading me the message. is this a bug in 2018 or is there some special way to
open the message?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Controlling Which Dialect Jaws Speaks

2018-01-09 Thread Fernando Gregoire
First of all, try unchecking the Generalized Dialect checkbox in the Text
Processing group witting JAWS Settings Center.
If this doesn't exactly solve your problem, you can disable Language Detection
and manually switch to Latin American Spanish when appropriate by pressing
CTRL+WINDOWS+L and selecting Spanish (Mexico) in the list (in JAWS 9 was still
called Latin American Spanish at it is internally still known), and except in
JAWS 9 where there were no voices profiles as added in JAWS 10, create a new
voice profile whose primary language would be Spanish (Mexico), to be used by
selecting it in the CTRL+INSERT+S list.
It is not possible in JAWS 17 because everything related to Eloquence is now
comprised in a single file, but in JAWS 9 you could also try to delete the file
for Castilian Spanish and rename the one for Latin American Spanish with the
same name as the used for Castilian Spanish, to make JAWS to think that it's
using Castilian Spanish. I can't test it now because I haven't JAWS old
versions, but these files are located somewhere in the JAWS subfolder witting
Program Files, perhaps in Drivers\Speech\Eloq. If I'm not wrong, the file for
Castilian Spanish is ESP.syn and the one for Latin American Spanish is named
ESM.syn.

One more question: are you using Windows and JAWS in English or Spanish? This
matters especially for JAWS, since translations of many things as made by
Freedom Scientific (and ONCE CIDAT in the past) aren't obvious. For example,
voice profiles were translated as configuraciones de voz instead of perfiles de
voz, as in JAWS 5.0 Spanish translators localized the voice aliases feature
incorrectly as perfiles de voz. Likewise, the Generalized Dialect in the Text
Processing group is named Generalizar Idioma in Spanish, not dialecto. I
suggested you based on English option names.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] shortcut key for jaws

2018-01-09 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

I have found that creating a shortcut key to start a particular version of
JAWS is not as useful as it was in days of yore. But there is an easy way
to start any version of JAWS which does not need any changes to make it
work.

With a shortcut key, you have to make sure that all shortcut keys on the
computer are only used for 1 program. If there is a duplicate shortcut key,
neither shortcut key will work. When a JAWS update is run, JAWS recreates a
new shortcut on the desktop which does not have a shortcut key. So you have
to recreate the shortcut key. I doubt that this has changed for JAWS 2018.
When you install a new version of JAWS, unless you first uninstalled the
current version, you have to either create and remember a different
shortcut key for the new version or delete or change the shortcut key for
the old version .
To easily start any version of JAWS, just hold down the Windows key and
press r to open the Windows run dialog. Then enter the name of the JAWS
version you want to start and press enter. The name of the JAWS version is
JAWS followed by the version number. For JAWS 17, the name is JAWS17. For
JAWS 18, the name is JAWS 18 and for JAWS 2018 the name is JAWS2018.
Capital letters are not required. I find that this method of starting JAWS
is very easy when I want to run different versions of jaws at different
times.

I'm still using Jaws 18 so I don't know if this is changed in Jaws 2018.
However, I have noticed over the years when you perform a jaws update you
also have to put back your shortcut key to bring up Jaws. I'mglad I have
Jaws to start first on reboot because I would have a difficult time trying
to find the version of jaws I'm using since I have Jaws 17 as well as 18 on
the desktop.

JAWS refers to elements with ARIA landmark roles as "regions". I haven't tested

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] What, exactly, is a "region" (html navigation)

OK, this is going to be a bit of a rant, but please read it all because you
will hopefully find it interesting and important.

About ten years ago, a new concept was invented. It was called Web 2.0. It
isn't a new "version" of the web, but rather a new approach to what the web is
and what it can do. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the web was simply a portal
for reading and editing basic information, but around 2008 or so, this began
tochange with the advent of Facebook, Twitter and more comprehensive websites.
People started using the web for everything from banking to advanced document
creation to even viewing and manipulating the files on other devices.

To keep up with this, The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created Accessible
Rich Internet Applications (ARIA). Many web developers saw the need to use
nonstandard controls on their websites. For example, rather than having a
button that advanced a user to a completely different page to see information,
they wanted to have controls that expanded and collapsed different parts of a
page. To let screen reader users know exactly what they were seeing, ARIA can
be used to tell the screen reader and the blind user something like, "Hey. This
is a nonstandard control. Just think of it as a button and you'll be okay.
And by the way, right now, it's open, so there's more information to see on
this page." Web developers can use ARIA to give sections of their pages custom
region names. As an example, go to the Training Downloads Page of the Freedom
Scientific website.

A few years after ARIA came along, HTML5 (the latest version of the markup
language used to code websites) was released. This gave web developers a lot of
new semantic tools to play with because it was hoped that they would use to
identify different parts of their pages so that one day, when AI would be
advanced enough to read and comprehend webpages themselves, they would be able
to more easily analyse websites using these semantic tags. Have you ever heard
JAWS say something like "article" or "content information"? There are also tags
for naming regions. These are some of the new tags in HTML5, but be aware that
sometimes JAWS does not speak the correct name for the tag, which is one reason
why JAWS is only somewhat standards-compliant. In JAWS 2018, you have the
ability to customize what tags JAWS speaks aloud. To see this, go to Settings
Center > Web/HTML/PDF > Reading > Customize Web Verbosity Levels or something
like that.

So how do ARIA and HTML5 go together to announce regions? The answer is that
they often overlap. This page
(https://dequeuniversity.com/assets/html/jquery-summit/html5/slides/landmark
s.html)
explains this in greater detail and may be of more use to the people doing the
web design. It is somewhat strange t

Re: [JAWS-Users] shortcut key for jaws

2018-01-09 Thread net bat66
the problem with this is every jaws version you have installed would have the
same shortcut keys. this would not work. they would be in conflict.

so i say leve it alone. let the user create there own shortcuts.

There is no reason they couldn't put a short cut in there automatically
pre-configured. Let the user change it if they want but it would make
easier for those that are used to it or that prefer it.

You wouldn't have to find it on the desktop. Just hit windows key+r, and
type in "jaws17" or "jaws18", depending on what version you want. Then,
there it is. Considering that every JAWS install removes the shortcut, and
how often they have updates nowadays, I just stopped bothering with the
shortcut altogether, and just use the run command, which always works so
long as File Explorer is running.
