My wife uses whatsapp to stay in contact with family and friends in other
countries. She sends audio, video and photos for free and gets them in return.
It is a good international tool, but, as you say, not as useful in this
country(USA).

[JAWS-Users] amazon and amazon access sites.

2018-04-12 Thread net bat66
i don't know about you. but with me i have to log off before i can switch
between the normal and accessibility site.
if i go to one site then type in the other without loging out it will
automatically go to the last site i logged into the last time i used amazon.
like i can log on to amazon.com/access. turn off the computer and type in
amazon.com and it will still go to the accessibility site unless i logged out
first.

Okay, Rebecca, this is Judy and I went to both the regular Amazon.com and
the Amazon.com/access sites. I also usually use IE 11 but had trouble with
it today but I've also had trouble using it at work so it may be a browser
rather than an Amazon problem. I just recently used the Amazon access site
to purchase a bunch of stuff with no trouble. Just now going to the regular
amazon site, I got nowhere with the "your accoujnt" link. I tried it with IE
and with Google chrome with the same results...nowhere could I find any
links for payment options. So I then went to the amazon.com/access account
and using google chrome I could do it. I agree that we should be able to use
all sites the same as everyone else and not have a separate access site, but
at this point in my life I am just happy when I can do what I need to do. So
if you use that site and open the "your account" link you can then use H
and go down through a bunch of headings. You want the heading that says
"amazon wallet." The first link in that list says "manage your payment
options" so open that link and then you can edit or delete cards, set up
your default card to use etc. I hope this helps. Maybe they just recently
made some changes, who knows. Judy & Libby

Several people said they could reach the

But to test, this morning, I loaded IE11 and went back to Amazon. For me,

I've gone to Amazon from the link on my desktop, as well as from a Google

I wonder why some can access this and others of us cannot.
Since email addresses change, and the expiration numbers on credit cards
change every couple of years, or shipping addresses may change, we need
access to the account information page.
Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the
operating system, browser and screen reader version are the same, but this
is why I put this out on the JAWS Users' List to see if the problem my
friend and I are having could be replicated.
Thanks to those who responded, but if anyone is having similar issues, I'd
like to know, and Amazon needs to be alerted so that they know how
widespread the problem is.

You have to be logged in or you can't get to that Account Options, as the
Amazon Disability person referred to it, or to the Payment Options link.
Even when I was logged in on the main page, I was asked to log in again when
I pressed enter on the
Your Account
Link.
It needs to know who we are to know what account info to access. Smile.
We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really
simplified site and one in-between. On this middle one, there was a link at
the bottom to let you return to the main site. Those choices seem to have
been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a
site for screen readers, if that's what's happening. There are those who
prefer the supposedly more accessible sites, but others not. And we as
users should be in control of which to use. Smile. JMO.

Hi, Rebecca.

I have the same experience as Dave. Note the obvious difference between
"account options," which I couldn't find, and "payment options," which is on
the "Your Account" page and which gives customers the ability to edit
payment details.

One other thought. Amazon recognizes my computer when I go to the website,
even though it will ask me to enter my password in certain cases. Does
Amazon recognize your friend's system? Or does she need to enter a username
and password in order for the "Payment options" link to appear?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon Accessibility Issue

2018-04-12 Thread Judy

For me,
it made no difference. I got the same page with the information copied
above.
I've gone to Amazon from the link on my desktop, as well as from a Google
search, just in case that made a difference. It doesn't..
I wonder why some can access this and others of us cannot.
Since email addresses change, and the expiration numbers on credit cards
change every couple of years, or shipping addresses may change, we need
access to the account information page.
Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the

We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really
simplified site and one in-between. On this middle one, there was a link at
the bottom to let you return to the main site. Those choices seem to have
been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a
site for screen readers, if that's what's happening. There are those who
prefer the supposedly more accessible sites, but others not. And we as
users should be in control of which to use. Smile. JMO.

We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really
simplified site and one in-between. On this middle one, there was a link at
the bottom to let you return to the main site. Those choices seem to have
been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a

Hi. We've had an earlier thread on this subject. I've also written and
spoken to VFO about it, but all they told me was to change certain JAWS
quick settings that I want to keep for other purposes. I don't need to make
these changes when using earlier versions of JAWS, which means I spend my
day switching between versions.

I've just written again to VFO tech support. I'd urge anyone else
experiencing this problem to do the same because it's a significant flaw.

Since email addresses change, and the expiration numbers on credit cards

Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 won't keep focus with IE in some webpages

2018-04-12 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi. We've had an earlier thread on this subject. I've also written and spoken
to VFO about it, but all they told me was to change certain JAWS quick settings
that I want to keep for other purposes. I don't need to make these changes when
using earlier versions of JAWS, which means I spend my day switching between
versions.

I've just written again to VFO tech support. I'd urge anyone else experiencing
this problem to do the same because it's a significant flaw.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox reader view

2018-04-12 Thread Adrian Spratt
Brian,
You solved the reader view problem for me. Yes, alt-v followed by r works. I
have a couple of follow-up questions for anyone experienced with this Firefox
feature.

First, when I close reader view with the alt-v, r toggle, JAWS goes silent for
several seconds. Is that normal?

Second, on an article I just tested, the second time through I couldn't get
JAWS to start in reader view at the beginning of the article. I first read the
entire article in reader view without the usual annoyances. Then I decided to
read it a second time in order to experiment with pausing and re-reading this
or that passage. However, JAWS put focus at a heading level 1 that happens to
be below the article's beginning. No matter what I did, I couldn't get JAWS to
go to the first few paragraphs unless I turned off reader view. Even here,
after turning it off, I'd place focus at the beginning, then resume with reader
view, only for JAWS to begin at that misleading heading 1 again.

Any tips or tricks? On the one hand, it's nice to have a clean, mostly
uninterrupted read. (I say "mostly" because picture captions and some other
miscellaneous material are included.) but I'm used to navigating my way around
articles without reader view. I need it to be fully workable if it's to be a
time-saver.

Thanks to everyone who posted, including Cristóbal whose suggestion that I
needed to start at the beginning of the article and not the top of the page was
one of those seemingly obvious things that made a difference.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox reader view

Hello Adrian,

You might want to try pressing Alt V followed by R. This should turn on and
off the reader view. I have a CTRL Alt R shortcut key assigned to a Remote
Incident Manager program and so when in Firefox I just use the view menu.

For anyone interested in getting reader view to work in Chrome, it works quite
well but needs some setting up. Here are some steps to follow for anyone
wanting to use the reader view feature in Chrome:

1. Locate your shortcut for opening Chrome, whether it's on your taskbar,
desktop or within the Start menu. Right-click it or use the application key and
open Properties from the contextual menu.
2. Tab until focus is in the Target edit box. the file path for the
Chrome application is shown in this field.
3. Add a space after the path text and then the following:
--enable-dom-distiller
4. Tab to the Apply button and use spacebar or click Apply with the mouse.
5. Close down all instances of Chrome. Icons in the system tray such as
Hangouts or Google Now will need to be closed.
6. Test out the Distill mode by opening Chrome from the shortcut you
edited. Go to a page containing an article. Use the Alt key and up or down
arrow to the “Distill page” menu item and press enter key. If using the mouse
click the icon with three lines in the top right-hand corner and choose Distill
page.

To go out of Distill mode you can use Alt with left arrow key. This will load
the page again in the usual manner.

Take care.

Even after invoking reader mode, you still have to navigate to the actual
article. Heading, next block of text that isn't a link, etc. You're not going
to be placed at the start of the article or whatever it is you're trying to
read.
I just finished reading an article in the New York Times in reader mode and

Hi all,

Windows 10 version 1803 is already being delivered for Insiders even in the
Release Preview ring. Builds on this particular ring are identical to the
ones that will be released to the general public, unless any critical
installation bug is found. By the way, it is likely that general public to
see this release to be delivered via Windows Update after some days.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon Accessibility Issue

2018-04-12 Thread Rebecca Lineberger
I went back to Amazon this morning. My friend had gone all down the
Your Account
Page, line by line, with the Amazon Disability person, and there was no
Account Options.
She'd also had JAWS, as did I last night, search for the word
Options.
JAWS said it was not there.
This morning, after having read several List responses, I had JAWS search
for the word
Payment,
And again, that was not there.
My friend does not have
Amazon Prime.
Nor do I.
There was a link for managing one's Prime Account, but this brought me no
joy as a roundabout way of getting to
Account or Payment Options
Since I was told immediately that I did not have Amazon Prime.
Here is what I see when I go to the
Your Account
Page:
JAWS says there are 11 links.

Several people said they could reach the
Payment Options
Link using IE11, JAWS 2010 and Windows 10. This is what my friend is using.
But to test, this morning, I loaded IE11 and went back to Amazon. For me,
it made no difference.
Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the
operating system, browser and screen reader version are the same, but this
is why I put this out on the JAWS Users' List to see if the problem my
friend and I are having could be replicated.
Thanks to those who responded, but if anyone is having similar issues, I'd
like to know, and Amazon needs to be alerted so that they know how
widespread the problem is.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Amazon Accessibility Issue

A friend needed to update her credit card information. She went to the
Amazon website, to:

Your Account

And there she was stopped because the link she needed was not on the page,
or not that JAWS could find.

The next step would have been to go to the link

Account Options

But that link was nowhere to be found on the page.

She called the Amazon disability number and spoke with someone. She finally
got the credit card information updated with their help, but as they saw,
she, using a screen reader, did not have access to that vital link. Perhaps
we, as screen reader users, are taken to another site, one supposedly more
accessible? when the screen reader is detected, because the woman assured
her that the

Account Options

Link was there for her, as a sighted user.

The woman filled out a form for their accessibility team, but if we are
currently unable to access information that was available to us before, as
it certainly was, then this is an issue that needs to be addressed by
Freedom Scientific working with Amazon.

I'm posting this here to see if others too will be unable to get to the

Account Options

Link from the

Your Account

Page.

If not, perhaps you too could call the problem to Amazon's attention.

My friend and I are both using Windows 10, version 1709, with JAWS 2018 with
the current March update.

She's using Internet Explorer. I'm using the latest version of Chrome.

You can also download an add-on. I have one instaled called Just Read that can
be toggled with the control plus shift plus L command. You can do some other
stuff with it, but I only bother with reader mode.
This is for Chrome as well.

Take care.

Thanks. I followed your suggestion, but reader view is still not working for
me. control-alt-r does cause JAWS to pause, after which it sometimes resumes
reading, sometimes not. But when it resumes, it reads the ads, etc. I hate to
clutter the list with this problem.

Thanks also to Mike B for the notes on the reader view extension.

Even after invoking reader mode, you still have to navigate to the actual
article. Heading, next block of text that isn't a link, etc. You're not going
to be placed at the start of the article or whatever it is you're trying to
read.
I just finished reading an article in the New York Times in reader mode and
it's working fine for me.

I have no problem using reader to read New York Times, Washington Post and
Financial Times articles. Maybe that's because I maintain a subscription to
each of them. All 3 have varieties of pay walls.

By the way , I access reader with alt/control/r. Alt/control/f does not
activate for me. As I recall, the short cut key alt/control/r is listed next
to the reader view option in the Firefox top line menu.
