Re: [JAWS-Users] WIN10 upgrade advice from our computer people
I notice everyone's situation is different when it comes to upgrading to Windows 10 so its best you do your homework before taking the plunge. My all-in one printer is 4 years old so got to find out if there's a Windows 10 driver available. I would hate to upgrade only to find out I have to go out and purchase a new one. Also using Open Book 9.0. Is that compatible with windows 10? How about Microsoft Office 2007? These are my issues that is holding me back from upgrading to Windows 10. Re: [JAWS-Users] accessible router
Hi: Purchase the Netgear 4500 router. It has to be one of the easiest routers I have ever installed. Plug and play and I was surprised to find out it comes without a software CD. The web interface is accessible and that's how you set it up. DJ Reese - Original Message - Hi all, I have a Linksys a6500 at home, it is an smart wifi router, and I am getting some problems with the web interface of this router. I need a good routher that allows to connect at least 15 wifi devices multi tasking, , dual band, and with an UI accessible. It is the most important thing for me, I am not able to modify the settings in my routehr due to the accessibility problems. Any advice? Re: [JAWS-Users] increase wifi strength
I personally like the Amped Wireless products. They are powerful and solid throughout my very large home. At this time I am only using my R1G in the basement and I have a full signal on the third floor. I can even hit the router using my iPhone 5 from the street behind my home. Your computer running JAWS would have no trouble if you used one of these. But what really did the trick better was one thing, a netgear router, and I was told that if wifi has to go through a kitchen it will have problems or if a kitchen is nearby. Then in July, I was trying to use my iPad in my living room 30 feet from modem and kitchen is in the middle, this is a wireless modem btw. So I called my cable service and I dunno, she said the channel frequency was at 8 and bumped it up to 11 because stating the IOS devices needing a different strength. Well amazingly enough, it has really made all teh difference, I can go anywhere and have wifi. - Original Message - From: Lenny McHugh To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2014 2:43 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] increase wifi strength it rebroadcasts the signal with a little more power -Original Message- From: Tom Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2014 3:39 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] increase wifi strength what's a wifi repeater? -Original Message- From: Lenny McHugh Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2014 2:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] increase wifi strength Thanks,I may have to use the repeater option. Move the router to a more centrally located spot, if possible. 2. If your router has an external antenna, try replacing it with one that is directional and has higher gain. Unfortunately, some routers have internal antennas and you can't do this. 3. Buy a wifi repeater, or you can use an old router as a repeater if you're technically inclined. If not, look for a wifi repeater on Amazon, Best Buy, etc. You can probably get one for $30 or so. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. You can use it with JAWS 14. Tipicly, the scans are translated and sent to another program such as Word or PDF where you can then read with JAWS. The image remains open in Fine Reader until you close it. I don't recall if you can scan, translate, and read the text all in Fine Reader, but I could be mistaken. I do like this program, however. Syncback became more graphically orientated and inaccessible/unusable with JAWS or any other "screen reader". Now that I'm using Windows 7, I'm curious... is there a JAWS or screen reader friendly backup program that will automate manual backup methods, like Syncback used to do? Since Windows Vista, and possibly Windows XP, Windows has a built-in NTP client. It runs in the background and will synch your clock with a configured NTP server every 7 days or so. I'm not sure whether this value can be changed in the Windows registry, because I know for a fact that it is not available to be changed within the user interface. So, if you like, you can do some searches on Google if you require mor accurate time. For most people though, the ammount of drift a clock experiences is not at all noticeable. Depending on how good your RTC chip is and the condition of the CMOS battery in your system can greatly affect the ammount of drift that you experience. The built-in NTP client on Windows may or may not calculate drift and make very small adjustmenets to your realtime clock. This would have the effect that your clock would have more accurate time over a longer period of time that the daemon/service is running. On Sun, Feb 16, 2014 at 8:28 AM, Liuda wrote: > I use Win.7. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch
You may also need to press the spacebar on the desired account before typing if there are multiple accounts. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 12:08 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch Sometimes, you may need to tab or shift-tab. It might be in the listing of accounts when you try to type in your password. Jaws will say Logging on a second time, presumably because once you enter the password, Windows will load your personal user profile and you have Jaws set to talk at the startup screen and also when you start your profile. Jaws performs equally well whether UAK is set to 0 or 67%, which is the default. The UAK will often give dialogs if you try to run programs or install a new program. Sometimes, the dialog may be covered up, but you would press alt-Y to run or alt-N to deny the program access. Some people elect to turn off UAK to avoid these annoyances. However, UAK does isolate the operating sytem and your browsing from the effects of malware which could run much more easily in XP. I do a bit of tech work and recommend my clients keep UAK on, at least at the 33% level. Even though I am technically competent, run an anti-virus program, a malware program, a software and hardware firewall, I also elect to run UAK on my own Win 7 PC. I know others who think that is overkill, so if you choose to keep it off, that is your decision. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Steve Lansing, MI - Original Message - From: Michelle McQuigge To: jaws-users-list Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 1:19 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch Hi all, I've finally made the leap from Windows xp to Windows 7, and not a moment too soon. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from the whole virtual ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I could use some guidance on. I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows. Jaws will announce itself ready for action after the windows music sounds, but won't always focus properly on the password field of the login screen. Sometimes it will simply say "logon dialog" without allowing me to type anything into it. Other times it will go straight there and all will work perfectly. What strikes me is odd is that Jaws will then announce itself as ready a second time once I have managed to log in successfully. Is there a setting I should know about to eliminate this issue? Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works infinitely better when the user account control is set to 0...is that right? Hi, I still have many messages in my Inbox to read, so forgive me if this has already been addressed. In the message below, it says "To do so in WinXP, click Start, Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box. Click the Visual Effects tab and click the Adjust For Best Performance radio button." Actually, in XP, after opening the System Properties dialog, you would go to the Advanced tab, and then choose the Performance Option button under that tab. Re: [JAWS-Users] Here is the simple Day by Day calendar
I've just answered my own question. The version DBD 1.0 is not the same as the planner which I wrote about. Also, you can not set reminders or write notes for any given date. With the planner you can do many, but not all things available in the DBD Pro version. So I zipped it up and sent it to Sendspace. Below is the download link. After you download it, you must unzip it, then simply hit Enter on the exe file, it is self extracting. Very simple to use. Re: [JAWS-Users] A simple Day by Day calendar
Thanks Jerry, In light of your pointing out a link to a free version, I went to the page and located it. After looking at the program I now see that there is a version which is free if you choose to subscribe to the Blind Software newsletter. I somehow missed that link before, so thank you for pointing me to it. I should say here that while people are sending copies around to each other and offering it on the list, remember that there is a condition which Justin would apparently like to have met before folks receive a copy which is e-mailed directly to anyone who meets that condition. So, while it is free, people should remember this before simply passing the program around as it doesn't seem right to ignore Justin's wishes when it comes to a program that he himself distributes. Another thing to point out is that the free planner is much smaller and has less features than the Day-by-Day Pro which is $29.00. Re: [JAWS-Users] Major JFW 12 problems with Firefox
I was having the same problem in Firefox 4 and JAWS11 on Windows7. It didn't matter which page I was on. Sometimes FF would crash immediately, and sometimes it would wait 3 or 4 minutes before crashing. I finally uninstalled Firefox 4 and went back to version 3. All is well now. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of CrisMunoz54 Sent: Thursday, May 12, 2011 3:51 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Major JFW 12 problems with Firefox Hello list, I have been having all sorts of trouble with Firefox and the latest Jaws 12 release. In particular the Google Reader page. I wanted to share what I'm experiencing and see if it may just be an issue with my machine or if others are dealing with the same problems. I have Google Reader as one of my homepages and when I launch Firefox, Jaws always behaves as though the virtual cursor is turned off. In fact, Jaws will say "Application Mode On". In order to get Jaws to work properly, I have to do an insert+z keystroke command and then Jaws will say "Application Mode off". I'll then be able to go around the page with no problems. This particular issue only started when upgrading the Firefox 4.0 and is still present with the latest Firefox 4.0.1 update. If while in Firefox and I go back to my Google Reader page, either by clicking on the Reader link from another Google site or through my saved bookmark at least 70% of the time, the "Application Mode On" issue comes up. I have noticed a marked increase of instances of Mozilla crashing with this latest Jaws release as well. Again, it happns most often while on the Google Reader page and while in Firefox in general. Either when I go to the Google Reader page, close a link that I had opened from Google Reader or simply by just having the page open or refreshing the page with the insert+escape key command. Upwards of 10 times a day. It would happen every now and then with the earlier versions of Jaws 12, but it has become a constant with the latest JFW rlease. I at first thought it was an issue with Firefox or perhaps a rogue add-on, but I have tried disabling add-ons and plug-ins and Firefox was still crashing left and right. When I use an older version of Jaws (11.0) however, Firefox not only never crashes, but the over all responsiveness of the browser and JFW feel over all snappier and better. With JFW 12, using the browser had become painfully slow either through regular navigating from page to page as well as when trying to refresh a page. Seconds would go by before Jaws would be able to speak. Not to mention the crashing problem. Jaws would outright crash much more frequently too. I don't experience the browser crashing issue in IE8, but the over all sluggishness with JFW 12 is present along with using other applications. I at first thought that I had been infected with a virus or other malware, but with the older version of 11.0, my computer is much, much more responsive. I do however experience the "Application Mode On" issue with JFW 11.0 as well. So maybe it's a Firefox 4.0 thing in regards to this. There are a couple of other problems, but the ones above are what are giving me the most problems. Is anyone else experiencing any of these problems or have any ideas on what may be causing it? Like I said, when using JFW 11.0, a lot of what I mentioned above doesn't happen. All my antivirus and malware stuff is up to date. I was going to shoot an email off to Freedom Scientific, but wanted to get feedback from other Jaws users as well. This is the first time a new Jaws release has given me this much trouble since I don't know when and want to be sure it's perhaps not something on my end. Hello, A while back, Rosanna said that there was a typing program located at the RS Games website. Larry then asked if she had a download link for the program. I do not recall her responding to that question. Has anyone actually found this program which Rosanna spoke of below? Thanks. I've never, ever gotten that non-feature to work. I don't even know why they say JAWS has this feature. Do you think the people at FS have ever been able to use it? I seriously doubt it.
