Just to add something, you also need to unload and then run Jaws for this

Hi Ed,

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you want to take Jaws out
of the Alt / Tab order. You need to have Jaws run from the system tray to
do this. Try the following:
1. Alt + Tab to the Jaws Window.
2. Press the, Alt key, to open the menues.
3. Press the letter, O, for, Options, press the letter, B, to open Basics.
4. Tab to, Run JAWS from System Tray, use the spacebar to check this box
tab to, okay, press enter.
HTH
Take care.

Hi Guys,

I just downloaded Jaws 16 and I am running W7. Where do I find the place to
uncheck to keep jays from showing in the task bar. Another words when I do
the alt + tab I hear the JAWS home use. When I was running Jaws 15 I did not
hear this. Can anyone tell me how to correct this.

Thanks in advance

2015-01-15 Thread Stephan, William S NWK

I think Maria's two cents is worth a lot of consideration.
As an example, a couple days ago I could not get the edit fields to work in
Excel 2007. I unloaded Jaws 16 and ran an earlier version that I know worked
just fine with Excel, but no luck. I called FS Tech Support and they said it
was the shared components that were causing the problem.
The suggestion was to uninstall JAWS 16 along with the shared components and
then reinstall 16 from FS's site.
Now, I'm sure this is a good plan, but in my situation I have to go through a
lengthy and difficult process to get admin rights to do this stuff, and the
time it takes to uninstall and reinstall etc. is not what I'd call a productive
use of resources.
My boss understands this stuff, so I'm fortunate in that respect, but I'm sure
that there are a lot of workplaces out there where wasting employer's time
would be seriously frowned upon.

This is only speculation on my part of course. However, even
though each big upgrade of JAWS is a separate program, they share
components. As each program is removed or newly installed, I believe
these shared components get corrupted at some point, creating the many
issues discussed on the list.
I, for one, never know whether or not to leave or remove shared
components with each new upgrade.
My issue with JAWS 16 is that it never installed with default settings,
but rather looks as if it merged with God knows whit version of JAWS on
my computer.
It seems to me that FS should figure out how to keep each version from
affecting another.
Just my two cents.

I've been finding more and more instances where buttons don't work correctly.
Sometimes, if you have a display, you can use a routing button to replicate
pressing a button, sometimes you can route and reroute the JAWS cursor, and
sometimes, you can use either the left or right click keys. It's very
frustrating when after entering a bunch of information you get to the submit
button and can't press it. Hopefully the folks at FS will take a look at this
and fix it in a future update.

then scrolled down to the Checkout button, pressed enter on it, and was paid

make a return. When it was time for me to select the Reason for Return,
the website would not allow me to preforn this function. I then called
Amazon, told them what the problem was. They processed my return right there
over the phone, emailed me the link to print out the return shipping label

return shipping costs. A minute or two later, I had the shipping label and

Some people have trouble plugging the USB cable into the Refreshabraille, but
there's a technique that helps much with this. I had a Braille Pen for a

Thanks Flor and George, for getting back to me. I have been doing more
research on Braille displays and found the Braille Pen sold through Flying
Blind for just under $1,000.

Unfortunately, the sails rep won't be back until Monday, so I can't get the
dimensions or wait of the Braille Pen.

I was told by Freedomscientific, that their Focus 14, is the size of a
dollar bill and waighing 2 pounds, costs $1,295 .

Has anyone on this list seen both and can compare them for us?

I would be very grateful for any information you might have about them, both

good and bad.

I think you're talking about the Focus 18?
I saw the tiny one on demo last year, and its great.
I can personally recommend it.
Don't know about JAWS compatibility since I only tried it on an IOS
device but it is an FS product so it should work.

Hi Jaws people, Do any of you know of a really small Braille display
that is Jaws compatible and iPhone friendly and connects either by USB
or Bluetooth? I am looking for just the display and not one that is
part of a device that has any of its own computability.

Hopefully, this would be able to work with either or both my Windows 7
computer using Jaws 15 as well as my iPhone 5.

Thanks so much for any input or comments about your small display!

Last Fall, my Credit Union upgraded it's online banking procedures supposedly
to comply with some of the new Federal Statutes. Basically, it became
impossible for me to use their online website for paying bills. I don't even
really know what the site was doing, but the screen was not static and I
couldn't do data entry after the first payment.
Fortunately, the credit union also has a mobile site, and that works fine for
most of what I need, so you might think about trying a mobile site if they have
one. There are perhaps going to be things you can't do except by using their
main site, but you might well be able to at least pay bills if my experience is
any guide.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Sharepoint (UNCLASSIFIED)

2013-03-27 Thread Stephan, William S NWK
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

SharePoint is simply a way of storing documents etc, and it's not inherently
inaccesssible. However, how accessible it is depends on what kinds of
information you're trying to access and what views are employed by whoever
created the site and the documents themselves. I'm currently working through a
situation where JAWS absolutely does not present major pieces of pages I need
to access on a regular basis.
I've spoken to Freedom Scientific about SharePoint, and they understand it has
accessibility problems but claim they can't address them.
So, bottom line is maybe it'll work for you, maybe it won't.
Sometimes, you can export spreadsheets etc. and work on them using something
like Excel, then import them back into SharePoint.
Good luck, you'll likely need a lot of it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Accessing Embedded Attachments with JAWS, A Work-a-Round

Recently there was a discussion I believe on this list about the problem of
not being able to access e-mail attachments that are embedded in the body of
an e-mail instead of being attached in the header. I do not remember seeing
a solution to this problem, so I am sharing instructions that I have
recently came up with to address this issue.

When you can't find an attachment that you know has been attached to an
e-mail, most likely the problem is that the document is embedded in the body
of the message. This happens when the message is created in Rich Tex Format
(RTF). JAWS is unable to find documents when they are attached in this
manner. If you follow the below steps, you will be able to access the
attachment.

1.Open the e-mail with the embedded attachment.

2. Use Control+f to forward the e-mail with the attachment.

3. Type your e-mail address in the To field and press Enter.

4. Press and release the Alt key to activate the ribbon.

5. Use the Right and/or Left arrows key to navigate to the Format Text
tab.

6. Press the Down arrow once to move to the Lower Ribbon.

7. Press the Tab key 5 times to get to the Format Group Box.

8. Use the Up and Down arrows to navigate through the 3 buttons, HTML,
Plain Text and Rich Text. Note that JAWS announces that the Rich Text
Format button is pressed. This confirms that the problem is that the
attachment is embedded in the body of the message instead of attached in the
header.

a. If you select HTML by pressing Enter when you are focused on it,
you will be returned to your message and you can Tab through the header and
find that the document is now attached in the traditional way and JAWS can
now find it.

b. If you select Plain Text by pressing enter when you are focused on
it, you might encounter a dialog box letting you know that some features are
not supported and asked if you want to continue. Tab to continue and press
Enter. You are returned to your message and you can Tab through the header
and find that the document is now attached in the traditional way and JAWS
can now find it.

9. Use the Alt+s command to send the message.

10. Once you receive the message you can use your Up or Down arrows to
navigate to the new message, and press enter to open it.

11. Use Shift+Tab to move to the attachment field in the header.

12. Use the Right arrow to navigate to the actual attachment and press
Enter to open it.

NOTE: If you anticipate only needing to read this document only this one
time, you do not need to actually send the message to yourself. Skip adding
your e-mail address and just tab to the attachment and open it.

Dan, first a caveat:
We use IP communicator software so laptops function as telephones on VOIP. I
have a Dynex headset that is very comfortable and has one earpiece, so I can
still maintain my situational awareness and communicate with others.
And obviously, the Synth and phone are played through the single earpiece.
Because many new laptops we have no longer have microphone inputs, ours are USB
headsets.
Not sure this helps but there you are.

I realize this isn't directly related to JAWS, but there are more members
on this list, using a screen reader than almost any other. Plus, many
folks on this list appear to be professionals, so may have some unique
input on this question.

Does anyone use a headset that can both receive input from the computer,
and from the telephone? IE, so you can hear your screen reader and talk
on the phone.

I used a rig like this many years ago, but haven't in a long time. That
rig had the synth in one ear, and the phone in the other ear. Personally,
I would prefer to have the synth and phone in both ears. Especially if I
were using the headset all day for screen reading, and only occasionally
using the phone.

Barring that, does anyone have any experience with wireless headsets for
use with the computer output. I am tired of getting tangled up in my
headphone cord. I've been reading about many of them, but it is difficult
to know how a set of headphones will feel after 8 or 9 hours on your head.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Reading comments in large documents (UNCLASSIFIED)

I have a document where JAWS does not read all comments but does read some, in

Once you get your new computer/laptop,
And you install jaws13,
Windows 7 should work right out of the box so to speak.
Regarding your email,
A few small changes, and everything should work quite well.
Sure there's a little learning curve, but, once you get the feel of windows

OK, I realize the issue is with JAWS 13 and Excel 2007 I think. SO I
apologize if this is just useless list traffic.

With JAWS 12 and Excel 2010, I use insert v, then arrow down to Reading
Options and set it to Cell contents only.

I am guessing that this does not work in JAWS 13? I have JFW 13 on
another box, here, but oddly enough Excel is not on that particular box,
so can't test this out.

Bill,

You are in luck. I had a few minutes to kill so messed around with Excel
and my braille display. Like I said, I am using JFW 12 and Excel 2010, so
your milage may vary.

Go into the settings center, insert 6, while in Excel. get to the braille
settings.

Under the general tab there is a Define Structured mode section. Hit
enter on that.

Now, arrow down until you hit the cell option.

Tab to modify control, and hit enter.

Now you have a list of things that can be displayed, and in what order
they are displayed. Cell coordinates is set as the first item. You can
remove it, move it up or down in the list.

So, I arrowed to cell content, then tabbed to the up button and hit that
until Cell Content was at the top of the list.

I hope that was sufficiently clear to get you there. If not, let me know
and I'll try again.

If you have, or can upgrade to Kurzweil 1000, its latest two versions
does this conversion well, even from opening the pdf file with Kurzweil
via the applications menu from within windows explorer's list view.
Just note that it will use your default OCR settings, which may perhaps
not be applicable to the particular document, but you can change it,
using one of the other longer methods.

If you can supply Kurzweil Educational systems with proof of a validly
 purchased version of openbook,
years ago my openbook serial number and specific version was sufficient
proof, you can upgrade and switch to Kurzweil for something like $150.

You'll never look back again, no pun intended.

 Riana

You do not have to zip a single file in the public folder, however, if you
want to send a single link for multiple files then you will need to zip them

Re: [JAWS-Users] Defining row and column titles in Excel with Jaws 13

2012-01-12 Thread Stephan, William S NWK
Barry: I didn't know about the combination command, so thanks for sharing.
My experience with JAWS 13 is that I could indeed find the settings for row
and column, using insert+v but that making a selection did nothing at all.
I've spoken with a few lads at FS, so maybe they can fix this in the next
update. I actually just dump JAWS 13 and load 12 when I know I'm going to be
doing stuff in Excel, which is often.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Defining row and column titles in Excel with Jaws 13

Hi list.

Using Jaws 13 and Microsoft Office 2000 Professional.

When working in Excel I can define row titles that I want Jaws to read by
going to the column containing the relevant row titles and pressing
INSERT+CTRL+ALT+R. Similarly, I can define column titles to be read by Jaws
by going to the relevant row and pressing INSERT+CTRL+ALT+C.

However, these key combinations require somewhat tortuous digital gymnastics.
In Jaws 12 there was an easier way to do these jobs. This was through the
Adjust Jaws Settings dialog box (Insert+V).

Turning now to Jaws 13, The Jaws 13 Help contains the following statement:

(Quote) Defining Row and Column Titles.

Before JAWS can read the titles of cells within a spreadsheet, you must
specify which columns and/or rows contain those titles. To define row titles,
move to the column containing the row titles and press INSERT+CTRL+ALT+R. To
define column titles, move to the row containing the column titles and press
INSERT+CTRL+ALT+C.

Tip: You can also press INSERT+V to use Quick Settings to define row and
column titles. (Unquote)

Contrary to the above Tip, I can't find anything in the Jaws 13 Quick
Settings that enables me to set row and column titles like I could do in the
Jaws 12 Adjust Jaws Settings dialog box.

Am I missing something here?

Any help would be appreciated.

Barry Preddle.

Hi group:

I finally got brave enough to try Amazon and I love it.

Most of you probablly already use the Accessible Amazon site.
I just wanted to let the rest of you know how easy the site is to use.
Just go to amazon.com, down arrow one time to the accessible link and press
enter.
You can save this site in your favorite list and you can put a shortcut key
for it on your desktop if you want to for easy access.
Amazon makes Christmas shopping much easier and more fun.
I just bought my wife a pearl set and gave them to her today, she loves the
set.
Happy shopping...buy lots of gifts...lollol...ahahahah...lol One question I
have, luckily I selected and copied this message.
For when I went to press f-7 to spell check my email in WLM, WLM froze and
restarted making me loose the message.
This must have something to do with the update, this has always worked fine.
Any suggestions.
Using the latest Jaws 13 on a windows 7 32 bit machine.

Well I feel the convenient OCr, as he called it, is not that cool really.
First it purportedly just OCr's the stuff that fits on the window on the PC
screen within the open Adobe PDF file and totally ignores the rest of the
multi page Pdf file. Which means if I need to access the whole doc which is
almost always the case with anyone, u still need to get another expensive PDF
converter/OCR software. And honestly in my case at least, and I'd assume in
most blind people's cases, we already know the topic of any PDF document we
download with an intention and or need to access all of it. I'd challenge
that most blind people don't just download a PDF file not knowing at all what
the heck it contains. In al such cases the JFW 13 OCr feature doesn't make
any diff really.

Now of course the situation is quite diff if u take a pic of a print document
u have no idea what it is using a camera and save then upload it to your PC
as an image file and then use JFW 13's OCR feature. IN this case yes its
valuable.

IN summary this feature is of any value only and only if you have no clue
what the soft PDF or image file contains.

The OCR thing is way cool. Especially when Errick read the DVD main menu
with it. Think about it. If JFW 13 when it does work with Win 8 doesn't
hook like NVDA and System Access do, it'll be
So much easyer still to watch a DVD on your own. Pluss you'll be using WMP
which is already easy to use some what as it is. This will only make it all
the more easier. Assuming JAWS works with out hooking to the Video that is.
See because since it does that WMP thinks JAWS wants to coppy the disk so
that's why one gets that diolauge about not being able to run the analogue
coppy protection thing. In short, If JAWS doesn't hook to the video in Win
8, and if the OCR can scan DVD menus like it did for Erick, watching movies
will be golden on the PC.

Greg: If I understand, you basically want one column of text, is that right?

So, one way you might get this to work would be to use a scanning program

open your .pdf document.
Do a control-P to print
select your scanner's import printer and hit enter.
If your scanning program is set to recognize columns, you should get what

WeirdHomeGrownProgram=excel 2007

I can't find the path to confignames.ini, but windows 7 finds the file.

good luck!

I am just talking out of my blow hole here, since I have no direct

macro program is invoked.

Probably a google search of macro programming will get some
reasonable results.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws, colors and spreadsheets

I often have to work with and analyze spreadsheets where different colors are

there a way to have JAWS automatically speak colors while you're arrowing

What about going to the configuration manager under Jaws settings, select
Speech and Sounds Manager, and invoke the say color scheme. Jaws will then
say the color changes as you arrow through the cells.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

I have a user's guide, which is 103 pages with 880 some links. I'll probably

Re: [JAWS-Users] My cheap way of writing checks

2010-10-14 Thread Stephan, William S NWK
Tom: Thanks for sharing this. Another possible benefit to doing this the
way you are is that there's no magnetic writing on your copied checks, which
means they can't be sorted by machine, which means they take longer to clear,
which means that you can write checks on the come as we used to say.
Writing some Braille characters along the magnetic strip will also defeat the
mechanized sorting.
I write very few checks in a given month, and I have a very old (1950s
vintage) Odhner Fascet portable manual typewriter I use for check-writing
which is very easy once you get the rowe and column stuff figured out.

Being the kind of person who likes to do it cheap, and do it myself, I made a
template in MS Excell.
I started out by making photo copies of my checks. You can see how cheap I
am. I didn't even want to waste real checks.
Then by trial and error I adjusted cells and columns and rows until I have
things reasonably lined up, and can get the words and numbers in the right
places.
I even have a file of checks that are repeating, so I only have to change the
date each time I write them.
I'd be willing to share the template, but It may need to be adjusted to match

 Hi Bill,

I am assuming that you already have checks?

I have set up a system using word 2003 and it is rather complicated, but
it works for me. I'll try to explain.

First you must set up a word table with four columns:

 1. the payee
 2. the check amount (in numbers such as 100.00 no dollar sign)
 3. the check amount written out as One Hundred and no/100
 4. the memo or note field

Once the table has been set up, then you must create a file which I call
check format. This file will be laid out to match the print positions of
the four items mentioned above on the check. This is the hardest step
trying to make sure that the print positions matched up correctly. I have
 wasted several checks doing this.

If you have a sighted person to measure the check for you, you can lay it
out using alt+F then U for page set up to set up the margin. You also have
to use format, paragraph to manipulate the exact position so not have to
print high above the line or below the line.

Once the format file is created, then you have to do a mail merge. Alt+t,
E press enter and select Directory and follow the prompt to step through
the process to merge the table with the format file.

Once you have successfully done this, then you must do the process over
again by recording the steps creating a macro with a short-cut key so that
the merge can be done each time that you want to change an amount of a
check or add a new payee.

I know that this is complicated as hell and a certain friend will probably
want to go to Dr. Phil after doing all of this.

One more thing, my checks are the business size checks that my bank
provided for me as a blind customer. It is called a sighted check. I don't
know if other banks will charge you for these types of checks. If you are
interested on what I mentioned above, write me off list and I will do my
best to help especially since I wrote this email rather quickly and may

Hi Bill,

I am assuming that you already have checks?

I have set up a system using word 2003 and it is rather complicated, but it
works for me. I'll try to explain.

First you must set up a word table with four columns:

1. the payee
2. the check amount (in numbers such as 100.00 no dollar sign) 3. the check
amount written out as One Hundred and no/100 4. the memo or note field

Once the table has been set up, then you must create a file which I call
check format. This file will be laid out to match the print positions of the
four items mentioned above on the check. This is the hardest step trying to
make sure that the print positions matched up correctly. I have wasted
several checks doing this.

If you have a sighted person to measure the check for you, you can lay it out
using alt+F then U for page set up to set up the margin.
You also have to use format, paragraph to manipulate the exact position so
not have to print high above the line or below the line.

Once the format file is created, then you have to do a mail merge.
Alt+t, E press enter and select Directory and follow the prompt to
step through the process to merge the table with the format file.

Once you have successfully done this, then you must do the process
over again by recording the steps creating a macro with a short-cut
key so that the merge can be done each time that you want to change
an amount of a check or add a new payee.

I know that this is complicated as hell and a certain friend will

[JAWS-Users] JAWS and Cisco I P Commmunicator

2010-10-14 Thread Stephan, William S NWK
All: I recently installed Cisco IP Communicator on my laptop. This program
essentially allows either onsite or offsite users to treat their laptop as an
internet telephone. At present, I can make outgoing calls, but because the
main screen consists solely of numbered graphics, I cannot answer calls, put
them on hold, or perform any other function. I've not looked at the script
repository in a couple months, but don't recall their being a script there
for this particular program. Is anyone using this program and have they come
up with any work-arounds?
I have a user's guide, which is 103 pages with 880 some links. I'll probably
read pieces of it, but based on my past experience, I doubt they're going to
say much about basic functions except to identify them through screen shots.
Any help will be appreciated.

Deanne: Thanks for reminding of this. One of the reports I have to generate
pretty frequently requires me to gather data from several Excel spreadsheets.
And, the easiest way to do that for this particular report is to use the
append to clipboard feature in Excel, then dump the results of this
aggregation into another document. The append to clipboard feature has been
deliberately disabled in JAWS 11, and I have to run JAWS 10 to accomplish
what I need to. This is doable, but is a waste of my time. I know there are
some folks on the List from Freedom Scientific, and my hope is that in future
revisions of JAWS the append to clipboard feature will be functioning again.

Hello William,

Your message did not mention the name of the global address book that you
are having trouble with.

However, I do have an idea of what you can do. Open your favorite text
editor. Open the global address book that you are having trouble with and
copy one of the addresses, then try to paste that address into a text file.

This should let you know if it is allowing Jaws / your system to copy and
paste the address.

While I was in school, they switched to an online email program. Whenever I
tried to copy the instructor's email from the message, Jaws would read that
the address was copied, but when I pasted the address there was always extra
data in the pasted address.

As a work around I always pasted the address into a text editor to clean it
up before I used it in the email program.

If you have to cc many different people, it may be helpful to copy the
address one by one paste them into a text file, clean them up and add the
comma separating the addresses and then paste them all at one time into the
intended message.

HTH,

TJ

previous versions. This would be particularly important if we're talking
about Microsoft Access.

I need somebody to refresh my memory as to which version of jaws was the
first to support office 2007.

NBP has a book with keyboard shortcuts for 2007. If memory serves there's
one for Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint, or you can buy the whole set as
a download or on a CD.

chris,

do you use the ribbon with the PC cursor, or the JAWS cursor? I like to
cruise around the thing when I need something, but I'm still fighting the
tabs when I can't remember where to look.

One of the new features mentioned in the JAWS 12 preview I posted
yesterday is a virtual ribbon option that will emulate the classic
menus in Office 2003 while retaining the ribbon menu structure
everyone loves to hate. For those of you who do not plan to upgrade
to JAWS 12, I just discovered a great little app called Ubit Menu that
adds the classic Office 2003 menus to the Office 2007/10 ribbon menu.
Once you download and install this app, you bring up the ribbon menu
by pressing Alt, right arrow to the Menu tab and hit Enter. Then you
can tab and shift tab through the various classic 2003 menu options
for Word, Excel and Power Point. It works well with JAWS 9, and does
not disrupt the existing ribbon menu structure in any way. So you can
have your cake and eat it too; classic Office 2003 menus, or the newer
and more frustrating Office 2007/10 ribbon menus. So who needs JAWS
12 anyway? Besides, Ubit Menu is availabel now, so you don't have to
wait for JAWS 12 to be released.
