Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?

2017-06-05 Thread Jo Luland
Mike, although I already got help with resolving my problem, I'd very much
like to know how to assign a program to open a file. I've come across this
situation so many times and I just don't know how to complete that action.
I'm running JAWS latest version, Windows 7 and Word 2010. I hope I included
all the info you asked for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jo,

You need MS Word to open this file. The file extension, .doc, is the old
file extension for MS Word prior to Word 2007, & possibly 2003, but I'm not
sure about 2003. If you have a newer version of Word installed, you will
also need to have the, Compatibility Pack, installed. This program allows
newer versions of Office to open, read, & edit older files from older Office
versions.

If you need to know how to assign a program to open this file, now this is a
totally different set of steps. First we need to know if you have Office
installed, & possibly what operating system you're running depending on your
needs.
Take care, Mike.

When installing CCleaner, it has a nasty habit of installing Chrome along
with it unless you know what to look for & uncheck the box so it won't. So,
if you're running Windows 7 open the control panel, press the letter, P,
until you have Programs & Features highlighted, press enter to open, press
the letter, G, & when you land on, Google Chrome, press the applications key
or shift + F10 to open the context menu, & press enter on uninstall to get
rid of the Google Chrome browser.

To keep this from happening again there is this little program called
Unchecky that will uncheck nasty little checkboxes like this for you
automatically.

Anyone who is concerned about unintentionally installing promotional
software may be interested in trying Unchecky.

http://unchecky.com/

It runs in the background as a service and monitors for recognized
installers. It then automatically unchecks any checkboxes related to
installing toolbars, browsers, and similar unwanted products. I have not
thoroughly tested the program and it is not guaranteed to catch everything,
but there have already been several updates since the initial release so I'm
sure it's detection rate will improve.

It will not remove anything which has already been installed. It only
monitors installers. It is a tool for prevention, not for removal.
Take care.

Hi,
I just downloaded CCleaner and found that my home page has been changed to
Google Chrome. I've tried every trick I know and, believe me that's really
not too many, but I just can't get rid of this new home page which I
definitely don't want. I even uninstalled CCleaner hoping this would solve
my problem. It didn't. Can someone give me step-by-step instructions as to
how to do this Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do I set Microsoft Word 2010 to default settings?

2015-09-21 Thread Jo Luland
Hi, Microsoft Word is acting goofy. I'm trying to address an envelope which
I've been doing for years, but now when I hit enter for the next line, JAWS
says B. and when I try to read by character, it doesn't announce the space.
If I go on, it appears to be writing on the same line even though I hit
enter for a new line. I think some setting has been changed. I'm sure
there's someone out there on this extremely savvy list who can explain how I
can set MS Word back to default settings. I'm running MSW 2010 on a Windows
7 Computer with latest version of JAWS. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Jo Lenny,

This is the 2014 program. but, when 2015 comes out of Beta you won't be able
to stop Vipre 2014 from updating to 2015 unless you run the reg files that
Vipre has written to keep this happening for screenreader users knowing that
2015 is not accessible. When 2015 becomes accessible Vipre has written
another reg file so you can say yes to the 2015 upgrade prompt. Vipre is
working very hard to make 2015 accessible with the help from some very
competent blind / screenreader users. It was with the help of these people
that Vipre was able to write the reg files. I have the reg files if anyone
wants them.
Take Care.

Hi Jo,

Vipre 2014 is very accessible but, Vipre 2015 is not for both programs.
There are some frame label files available that make the Scan Options tab in
Settings very navigable so you don't have to use the Jaws cursor to navigate
this particular tab in Settings. This is the only tab that was a Jaws
cursor must in settings. You would have to contact Vipre to ask them if
2014 is still available being that 2015 is out in Beta.

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone on the list have any experience using the BraillePen12
with JAWS? I have JAWS 15 and am running the JAWS 16 beta. I
recently got a BraillePen12. So far, I have only used it with my
iPhone. I was thinking about trying it out with JAWS. The
manufacturer says that it will work with
JAWS15 and later but it is not listed as a supported display in the
JAWS documentation.

Thanks,

Does Verizon offer a spam blocker with their internet service? I was
pleased with Postini until our internet host changed it to Red Condor
because Postini wasbought by Google. Red Condor is not very accessible,
but you might do a search for postini and see what comes up. It's logical
that Google will make the service available to its e-mail accounts.
Perhaps you can get the program on your own.

Hi

You might want to consider changing your email address. It's a real pain
to

change your email address, having to notify your friends and family and
re-subscribe to all your email list, but it might be the only solution.
If
your current address has just gotten into the hands of too many spammers,
an

anti-spam program may not be able to keep up. If you do change addresses,
you might want to consider setting up multiple addresses, such as one for
personal stuff and another for email lists. Then if the spam starts again
in the future, you'll at least have an idea of how your address got
out

Re: [JAWS-Users] How can I go back from IE 10 to IE 8?

2013-06-08 Thread Jo Luland

Hi,
My computer automatically installed IE 10. As a result, I can no longer do
things I'm used to doing like reading newspapers, and navigate certain
websites. I know it's probably settings that need to be changed, but I don't
know which ones. In control panel, I've never had luck with changing my
theme. I do what I think should be done which is to be set to classic, but
every time I check it, it seems to be on another theme or unsaved theme.
Where can I uninstall IE 10 so my life can return to what I feel is normal
for me? I've always welcomed changes in technology, but Windows7 and I have
just never gotten along for some reason. This situation happened too with IE
9, but I was able to revert to 8, but I don't remember what I did because I
tried so many different things. I went to the control panel and checked to
have updates downloaded, but let me choose when to install, but even that
didn't make much difference to Microsoft. I'm running windows7 with JAWS14
latest build. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would like to
work with IE 10 if I had a step-by-step instructional explanation regarding
all necessary changes, but for now, I need to go back to IE 8. Thanks in
advance for your help.

Hi,
Recently I downloaded the program referenced above, AVS Audio Converter.
However, there doesn't appear to be documentation regarding how to run it.
Has anyone heard of this program and if so, can you provide some
instructions as to how it works with JAWS? I'm running Windows7 64 bit and

I was trying to add a credit card to make a purchase on amazon.com.
However, after entering the credit card number I tried to use alt down

when you arrow down to find month or year in these two combo boxes I get
bounced back in to the edit box for the credit card number. These kinds of
forms are usually pretty straightforward and I had know issue in the past
but it's not working correctly now. I am using Jaws v13 and windows 7.

Hi Hareth and Mike,
Thanks for your responses to my dilemma. Hareth, I experimented with both of
your suggestions, but had no luck with either one. Since I still have more
than 20 days before my trial expires, I'm going to do some more
experimenting in the hope that I'll somehow get the knack of it. Just a
question, when I click on the program to view, list doesn't appear. Why is
that? If I can't get it within a few more weeks, guess I'll have to join
you, Mike and just forget about it. It does look like a program I would
really like to have, though. Again, thanks to both of you.

Hi,
yes, u can use it with jaws, but u need to use the root jaws to pc curcer,
and set the view of the programs as a list
via left clicking (view) then (list)
so yo can after that go around your installed via the normal way and
when you want to uninstall any of them just focus on it and root jaws
to pc, go to the top via ctrl+home key and keep pressing on the ctrl
key and via arro keys find (uninstall) and from there it would be
more easyer to finish the job,

other way to use it:
go to the directory of the installed program or software, like
c\program files\etc and and press the applacation key on the wanted
folder of and choose the uninstall with revo uninstaller,

and u need to know if a program asks for reboot the system skip it
and finish the scan and remove the files then do the reboot,
after all its a verrey good program if u know what you are doing
cince it needs a some how an advanced pc user,
and a good user of jaws curcers,

take care.

Hi Jo:

In ITunes 11 the interface has been changed.

You do not need any scripts, you just need to get used to some different
key strokes.

the December and January FS cast covers how to use ITunes 11.

For example use control+s to bring up the sources tree view, sometimes
press twice depending where you are in the program.

control+shift+h, to go to the ITunes store home page.

while on the store pages at any time press control+shift+b, to browse
categories, up and down arrow through the columns and use the tab key to
go across the different columns of information.

the radio stations have changed as well.

Press Control+s, to make sure that you are on the source tree view, press
the home key to go to music, tab 7 times and press the space bar to check
the radio checkbox then press f6 to go to the list of radio stations to
stream, press enter to play your choice.

Basically, you will use f6, tab, application key to see all the different
choices you have depending on what you are sitting on.

Home key takes you to the top of a list, end key to the bottom of a list.

Enter key to play, spacebar to pause a song and so on.

Please listen to the podcast from FS, they really teach you a lot of
things and give you good information.

I hope this helps...

Hi All,
I recall this topic was discussed not too long ago. I even suggested to
another individual having the same problem that he/she contact FS. I know
that was done and I did too. At that time, I was given a solution which
didn't really remedy the situation. Today the problem was really excessive
so I called FS again. I was told that the problem was a Windows problem and
that JAWS has nothing to do with the cursor jumping to another position. Has
anyone else experienced this and if so, how does one control the cursor in
windows? I'm running Windows7 and latest version of JAWS13. I'm reluctant
about calling FS again since I was emphatically told that this is not a JAWS
problem. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Open up Windows Explorer.

Go to the tools menu and select options.

Control tab once.

Tab once.

Go down that list until you find use check boxes to select items and hit
the

space bar.

It sounds like yours is checked so space bar will un-check it.

Then tab to apply to hit enter or just alt + A. Then hit enter again.

I called them today and the technical support person using candem was able

If you can, give technical support a call. I cannot tell you exactly what
he did, but while a folder is open, he went to view and down arrow to
customize this folder and did something there. He was moving around pretty
fast and I didn't catch what he did.

Anyway, let's hope that I do not have the problem anymore and that FS can

Hi,

I have a problem what I think it has to do with the Jaws PC cursor.

I could be on the desktop or in a folder with file names. It makes no
difference. When I bring up the desktop, the cursor does not always
land back on the Icon that I Started with. For example, I press enter
on my computer, perform my task and Alt+F4. When the desktop is
displayed, the cursor could be on another Icon instead of my computer
icon.

This is the same when I go into a folder. I could be on a file that I
want to open and when I press enter on it, the cursor jumps to
another file and opens that one. This can also happen when in my
favorites. I press enter on a particular shortcut that I want to go
to and the cursor jump to another shortcut and bring up that web
page. I don't have to press enter for the cursor to jump. I can land
on a file name and not doing anything, the cursor jumps anyway. This
problem doesn't occur within an application like Excel or Word.

I am wondering if this has anything to do with the video intercept?
Perhaps the video intercept is corrupted and/or needs to be repaired
or updated? This problem happens in both the latest Jaws 12 and
Jaws13. I am using windows XP . I have a laptop with windows7 and
this problem does not occur in either Jaws12 13.

Does Jaws 12 or 13 use video intercept or have FS change this? Any
suggestion on how to correct this problem will greatly be
appreciated. Thank you.

Take care.

I've been switching to JAWS12 to use the BARD website since the last update

With the latest build JAWS13.0.924 the problem resurfaced. I'm glad to learn

version, I think I'll stay with what I've got now and not install the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Questions about Ninite and Speedmax

I've read so much about Ninite on this list and I'd like to try it. However,
I don't seem to understand, is it free or not? If not, how can I decide if
it works for me without paying for it first? It looks like a great program,
but Windows7 hasn't been as friendly to me as previous versions of Windows.
And speaking of programs, has anyone heard of one called Speedmax? I asked
this a few weeks ago, but since I received no response I'm assuming no one

Re: [JAWS-Users] [JAWS-Users is ninite a free program?

2012-07-09 Thread Jo Luland
I've read so much about Ninite on this list and I'd like to try it. However,
I don't seem to understand, is it free or not? If not, how can I decide if
it works for me without paying for it first? It looks like a great program,
but Windows7 hasn't been as friendly to me as previous versions of Windows.
And speaking of programs, has anyone heard of one called Speedmax? I asked
this a few weeks ago, but since I received no response I'm assuming no one
has. Is that correct? I'm running Windows7 with latest version of JAWS 13.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

go back far enough. Now when I try to do a system restore, I'm presented

not what it should be. I can't log into my bard site. Please, if anyone has
some knowledge regarding backup duty light and what it is, your help will be

It would seem that the most recent version of Skype does not like the

Try the Blind Computing website under Address Books and Personal Data.
There is a check writing program that you can download and try out. Also,
I'm a big fan of Money Talks from The American Printing House for the
Blind (APH.org). It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Quicken
but it more than does the job and the price is very reasonable.

Hope this helps,

Hi, Thanks for your response. When I went to the JAWS menu, I checked the
voices submenu and found that the voices submenu was disabled. With some
patience and a great deal of frustration, I somehow got narrator up and
running because NVDA, too had decided to shut down. I downloaded JAWS and
now I'm trying to configure my computer only to be told that I'm not
authorized to perform that action. I know it has something to do with
administrative tools. Can you or someone out there give me a brief outline
so I won't encounter this each time? Thanks.

Hello there;

1, go into, jaws options/basics,

2, tab and enter on, automatically start jaws

now, you need to have,
start jaws at the log in screen checked,
start jaws after log in screen for all users checked,
start jaws after log in for this user, make sure that always is
highlighted,
you should hear,
start jaws after log in for this user, always, 1of3.

now tab okay, press enter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] AUTOMATICALLY START JAWS

2010-09-22 Thread Jo Luland
Hi All, Thanks for all your suggestions. Well, I tried power options and FS
also checked to see that they were set to never. I'm not sure this is a
JAWS issue, though, but when I leave the computer for awhile, it just stays
where it is. Yesterday, A friend came to see if she could help. When she
tried to use the mouse, it, too, didn't work. We had to turn it off in order
for her to use the mouse. Today, I did what FS suggested, leave narrator
running to see if it was still there. It wasn't. Neither was NVDA. When this
happens the screen is dark, but my friend could see that the computer was
on. This is a brand new computer with Windows 7 and I don't have any idea
what I can do next. I'll give FS another try to see if anyone can come up
with a solution or a suggestion. I'm wondering if it's a Windows issue.
Again, thanks to all who responded.

Joe,
When you leave the computer, is your computer going to sleep? if that's
the case, when you come back to the computer, jaws wouldn't speak unless
you woke your computer up. Go into power management, and set your computer
the way you want, so that it doesn't go to sleek. For me, I set that to
never, so my computer doesn't go to sleep or shut down, until I tell it
too. Just a thought. Jim

I found a lot of that with vista and jfw 10 but not eleven so far.

I'm afraid that is nothing new for me. I have always had a problem with
JAWS losing focus to some extent. It does seem to be a little more
prevalent with version 11.

This happens sometimes to me as well. I wonder if it isn't something
about the button. Perhaps it's a nonstandard control that just looks
like a button.

route Jaws cursor to PC cursor and do a left mouse click. That seems to
