With the first press, JAWS doesn't verbalize anything. I'll come back to

sentence, MS and JAWS don't bother with the "sentence." In the event a

fourth press.

The reason f8 says nothing after the first press is that it is waiting
for a second key to be pressed. This is because you can select any
portion of text if you've predetermined it by adding an unusual symbol
at the end point. If I'm in a literary essay, it's unlikely that the @
sign will appear. So, I mark the end point of my selection with @, then
return to the beginning. I press f8, then @, and everything between
those two points is selected. In other documents (such as ones with
email addresses), I'll use a percentage or some other sign that is
unlikely to appear in the particular document.

Note. To simplify getting back to the start point, I usually mark it
with double asterisks, which I search for after marking the end point.

It might be easier to use the Find and Replace capabilities of Word to
replace the formatting. However, Word 2013 (and I think Word 2010 as well)
has a selection tool that can be used to select noncontiguous blocks of text
with similar formatting. You start by finding the first occurrence of the
text that has the formatting you want to change and select it. Go under the
Home tab in the Editing group and there is a Selection menu. In that menu
is an option for selecting text with similar formatting. If you choose that
option the next occurrence of text with the same formatting as your
selection is selected. If you use CTRL+Y repeatedly other blocks of text
throughout the document are also selected. JAWS does not report it
correctly as if you use the Read Selected Text command JAWS only reads the
first block of similar text selected. However, using CTRL+Y several times
does select the other blocks of similarly formatted text in the document.
You can check this out by copying after using CTRL+Y several times and
pasting into a new document. This will confirm that the blocks of text were
selected even though not reported to be by JAWS.

Take care.

now. Maybe in the future. When selecting non-contiguous text, or even items
from a list view, user needs to hold down the control while navigating to
the next text or item to be selected. There's no problem when selecting
non-contiguous items in a list view with keyboard.
However, I wonder how to do it in a document. Sounds impossible because we
also use control key in text navigation, and pressing any arrow keys will
immediately unselect selected text.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to select non-contiguous text

2016-04-24 Thread Annette Carr
Hi,

Your idea is a great one. It is so frustrating when you are trying to
format a document and somehow you fail to apply the same attributes to each
desired set of text.

I did a little bit of research and have not found a solution to accomplish
the selection of non-continuous text in a Word document. I was hoping that
one of the F8 Extended Selection Mode commands were going to work in word as
they do in a drop down list, or something like that. The only thing that I
could find in the JAWS help about using F8 is the following:

Selection Mode: F8 is used to turn Extended Selection mode on. Subsequent
presses of F8 select the current word, sentence, paragraph and document.
JAWS announces the unit being selected and the text of that unit. Other
navigational keys can also be used to extend the selection. Use ESC to exit
Extended Selection Mode.

I thought there were other commands such as Shift+F8, Control+F8 and/or
Shift+Control+F8, but I could not find any references to this in any of the
JAWS17 help options.

My next thought is to see if it is possible to use some combination of the
mouse keyboard commands to simulate what sighted users do with the mouse.
I'll add it to my list of things to try out when I have some time.

Annette

2016-04-24 Thread Jason White
To create an accessible document, it is important to use styles throughout,
and in a consistent manner. The styles are then preserved if you create a
tagged PDF file, or an HTML file, allowing the recipient to use structural
navigation with a screen reader.

The other benefit of using styles well is that you can easily change the
presentation by modifying a style definition.

Am very familiar with the copy format and paste format of word. But
applying or pasting format to each text could be tedious, especially
when working on a very large document. Imagine if we can just select
text from different parts of the documents without the worry of
unselecting the rest of the text previously selected, all we have to
do is to paste the format at ones.

The best way to accomplish this is through the use of styles. Create styles
that match the formatting attributes for the particular items you want to
format and then select each piece and apply the style.

My sense is that JAWS operates too linearly for this to work as you describe.
However, this idea occurs to me as a workaround. With your main document open,
start a new one in which you pre-set the font attributes you want to apply to

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to select non-contiguous text

2016-04-23 Thread abdulaziz dapilin
What I meant is not for copying and pasting. Here's the scenario. I
would like to select non-contiguous text in a large document to apply
format and attribute changes at ones. For sighted user, they simply
accomplish the task by holding down the control while selecting text
from different parts of the document using the mouse pointer. I don't
know if it is possible to do it solely with the keyboard.

Hi,
To copy one word at a time hold down the ctrl+shift key then right arrow for
all the words you want to highlight. As you arrow right Jaws will announce
the words that are being highlighted.

Then after you have highlighted just press the Ctrl+C to copy then go to
where you want to put the copied text and then just press the Ctrl+V to
paste it where you want them.

If you want to select all the words on a page just do ctrl+A then Ctrl+C to
copy then ctrl+V to paste.

Try taking advantage of the JAWS "append to clipboard" feature with JAWS
key+Windows key+c. As the name implies, text added to the clipboard doesn't
replace existing copied items, but adds to it.

2016-04-23 Thread Kimsan
This could work if you have noncontiguous words close enough together;
however, through a large document it will become tedious real fast.

Move word by word and hold down the shift key to select the word and when
you come across a word in the line to not select let up on the shift key.
