Hi steven. i tried using open office with mixed results. The writer works fairly well calc is totally unaccessible. This is on a windows 7 64 bit machine overall it is more bother than its worth in my opinion because the setup is pretty complicated. you have to install the java access bridge which has no executible. if you need to use i would not recommend jaws for your screen reader. I have an xp laptop that i can run it on if i use NVDA let me know if you have any other questions. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steven Hicks Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 5:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Open Office Hello friends, has anyone had any success with JAWS and Open Office? -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of hareth iraq Sent: 21 March 2012 12:26 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] other voices in jaws hi I've hade the same problim but fixed with running the folowing line via the runn box in the start menue or pressing windows+r key command %windir%\SysWOW64\speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl copy/paste/press enter a new list of voices will be there with the 32 bit virsion of voices you've installed on your system hopefully will be fixed for you have a nice day... It was supposed to be working with screen readers if you had that Java Access Bridge, but the problem is that it was long dropped from Sun support. Now it's part of Oracle, perhaps new steps to improve accessibility will be taken. Most Java programs seem to have these quirks anyway. Open Office is a free, Open Source office productivity suite developed mostly at Sun Microsystems. Sun also developed Java and used Open Office to promote Java. It can read and write Microsofft Office documents as well as it's own open, documented file types. It is roughly equivalent to Microsoft Office 2003. Re: [JAWS-Users] Open Office
I once installed Open Office and I'm not sure what happened but after installing it, Jaws failed to work correctly until I uninstalled the program. Not only did the Open Office program not work with jaws but other areas like the desktop quit working properly. I would only here the word blank when navigating. Not sure what the conflict was but it was resolved when Open Office was uninstalled. Re: [JAWS-Users] open office
I played with it a couple of weeks ago with JAWS 10, and no joy. Many, possibly most, of the hot keys for MS Office work with Open Office, but JAWS doesn't interpret it well. Word could be done, with care and futzing, but the spread sheet application doesn't see the cells at all. At 01:00 PM 8/14/2009, you wrote: Is there anyone out there using jaws with open office? I have never used it so I can't comment. I still use Wordperfect13, but among the free processors, I prefer abiword which looks like word. Jaws still has problem to recognize its workspace correctly but I hope somebody will write a little script to avoid this issue. [JAWS-Users] Open Office
I have seen some comments on the list about Open Office being inaccessible. I thought I should report that with the Java Access Bridge, Java, Open Office 3 is completely accessible to all aspects of its programs at least in Writer and Calc. I have tested this with Jaws 9 and 10 and both work fine. You do need to turn on the accessibility option in Open Office which is a bit of a nonsense as the application can be inaccessible until you do this. The best advice is to follow the instructions on the NVDA application support page for making Open Office 3 accessible. There is also a registry patch here which will turn on the Open Office Accessibility options. Although these instructions relate to making NVDA work with Open Office they appear to work just as well for Jaws. After following these steps I have found that Open Office has become pretty much indistinguishable from using Microsoft Word and Excel in terms of accessibility with Jaws . I am using XP Pro but I am not sure that the OS is particularly important here.
