[JAWS-Users] Open Office, compatibility with JAWS 15

2014-02-19 Thread Allen Childs
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Open Office is compatible with
JAWS 15, 6025?

I know that it didn’t use to be, but I was hoping there might have been a
change to where it would work now.

I am using JAWS 15, latest update, on a Win 8.1 computer.

Thanks for any help.

Hi steven.
i tried using open office with mixed results.
The writer works fairly well calc is totally unaccessible.
This is on a windows 7 64 bit machine
overall it is more bother than its worth in my opinion because the setup is
pretty complicated.
you have to install the java access bridge which has no executible.
if you need to use i would not recommend jaws for your screen reader.
I have an xp laptop that i can run it on if i use NVDA
let me know if you have any other questions.

It was supposed to be working with screen readers if you had that Java

accessibility will be taken. Most Java programs seem to have these

Open Office is a free, Open Source office productivity suite developed
mostly at Sun Microsystems. Sun also developed Java and used Open Office
to promote Java. It can read and write Microsofft Office documents as
well as it's own open, documented file types. It is roughly equivalent to
Microsoft Office 2003. Additionally, the software is multi-platform,
meaning the same code runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. Unfortunately, on
Windows it is not accessible as of the last time I heard.

If you were asked to update Java lately, they sneak in a
question to install
Open Office. You need to look vlosely when updating Java,
there is a
checkbox that must be unchecked to avoid Open Office being

 Hello all,

I have been away from this list for a couple of years, so apologies if any
of the topics I raise have been done before.

I recently downloaded the Open Office suite of programs. They do much the
same as the version of Office 2003 I am currently running. Whilst some
functions seem to work quite well, some things such as spellchecker, menus
and dialogue boxes don't seem to work at all.

I have put in the order to upgrade to JAWS 11 from version 9.I have
downloaded the demonstration version of 11 to see what works and to look
 at
the new features. There does not seem to be any help files for Open
 Office.
I have never worked with script files, but I have read of list members who
seem to know about this. Has any work been done to make JAWS work with

 Grateful for any help.

I once installed Open Office and I'm not sure what happened but after
installing it, Jaws failed to work correctly until I uninstalled the
program. Not only did the Open Office program not work with jaws but other
areas like the desktop quit working properly. I would only here the word
blank when navigating.
Not sure what the conflict was but it was resolved when Open Office was
uninstalled.

I played with it a couple of weeks ago with JAWS 10, and no

with care and futzing, but the spread sheet application doesn't see

[JAWS-Users] Open Office

2009-06-06 Thread David Griffith
I have seen some comments on the list about Open Office being inaccessible.

I thought I should report that with the Java Access Bridge, Java, Open
Office 3 is completely accessible to all aspects of its programs at least
in Writer and Calc. I have tested this with Jaws 9 and 10 and both work
fine.

You do need to turn on the accessibility option in Open Office which is a
bit of a nonsense as the application can be inaccessible until you do this.

The best advice is to follow the instructions on the NVDA application
support page for making Open Office 3 accessible. There is also a registry
patch here which will turn on the Open Office Accessibility options.
Although these instructions relate to making NVDA work with Open Office they
appear to work just as well for Jaws.

After following these steps I have found that Open Office has become pretty
much indistinguishable from using Microsoft Word and Excel in terms of
accessibility with Jaws .

I am using XP Pro but I am not sure that the OS is particularly important
here.

[JAWS-Users] Open Office and Jaws 6.20

2008-03-11 Thread Immanuel Kühnle
Hello.

I have installed Open Office 2.0. But I have some problems with using it. I
use Jaws 6.20. Is it possible to use Open Office without problems with Jaws
6.20?

Thanks.

Immanuel

Re: [JAWS-Users] Open Office and Jaws 6.20

2008-03-11 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, Open Office is written in the Java programming language. In order
for JAWS to access Java-based applications, the Java AccessBridge is
required. Do a Google search and I'm sure you'll be able to find it.
Hope that helps.
