Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications
Thanks for your recommendations. Remember I was doing this for a sighted person, and she also looked at the form. She is not very Web Savvy. She did not report any hidden check boxes that appeared to her visually. The instructions on this agreement clearly indicate to scroll to the bottom of the page before clicking on "I Agree." Finally, I did get this site to work on two occasions in the past using Firefox under an earlier build of Jaws 16, and there weren't any check boxes. It seems like the developers of this portal designed that page under the premise that a user would only be clicking the scroll bar to advance down the page, with no concept that people would be navigating the page like a virtual document with a screen reader or just using the arrow keys. I haven't visited the site yet today but suspect that's the problem. Or it might help to turn off the virtual cursor, and tab through, see if there's anything that might be the checkbox you could check or 'click'. I wonder if WebVisum used with Firefox might be used to get some extra information from the page. -Original Message- From: Christopher Sabine, ONH Consulting Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2015 4:01 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem completing a privacy agreement screen on an HR portal commonly used in job applications Shane. I suspect it's the same way with your ISP unless you want to go through an overseas call center and have no one respond to the issue because they don't know the first thing about assistive technology. Unlike your situation though, there is no indication of a check box before clicking on the "I agree button." You're supposed to scroll to the bottom of this very comprehensive privacy / terms of service agreement with 12 long clauses that takes a half an hour to read if you just do a say all in JAWS; once you reach the bottom, the I agree" and "I do not agree" buttons are supposed to populate. The couple of times I finally did get this page to work, JAWS will recognize the populated buttons correctly as form fields. Problem is getting the buttons to become enabled / populate in the first place. I'm also not sure if it's necessarily a JAWS issue or a problem with the site recognizing that you've actually read the privacy agreement thoroughly enough for its satisfaction and giving you the option to except or decline. My sighted relative is having basically the same problem, but she isn't web savvy enough to navigate the kind of complex, multi-part forms common in online job applications nowadays. Hi folks, It was a good approach to try multiple browsers to give Jaws a chance to work. sometimes that solves it. I consult with job applicants and companies on challenges regarding access to employment and commerce . As far as online job applications go, you have nothing to lose by bringing it to the organization's attention and requesting a "reasonable accommodation" that will make it possible for you to apply and test for the position.. If companies or government entities are not adequately responsive to your access needs the US Dept. of Justice recently launched a new online complaint form, see announcement and link below: The Department of Justice is pleased to announce that, as of today, individuals wishing to file ADA complaints with the Department will be able to fill out the form and submit it completely electronically. Filers will also immediately receive a "reference number" that can be used whenever contacting the Department about that complaint. You may be right on the comprehension part. However, I let her hear Voiceover on the iPhone and let her watch me pick various items on the screen. While not the same, it gave her an idea of how a screen reader works. And she said that the software they have in the office is both new and a pain. Interesting, isn't it? I pointed out to her that the check box thing has been going on for a while now. Interesting thing about this is that the other check boxes on the site work fine. It's just the one check box at the bottom of the page that has a problem. Shane On 8/18/2015 10:01 PM, Christopher Sabine, ONH Consulting wrote: Shane.
