Yes, it's supposed to be the default, but it wasn't in my folders list.
However, a couple of us posted yesterday how to create or bring this folder
into the folders list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-05 Thread Tom Fairhurst
By default, JAWS is set to read the message headders and announce the links
count as well as read messages automatically. I have made the following
changes that work for me. I opened a message and then pressed Insert+V for
quick settings. The first item in the tree view is General mail settings.
The reading of headders, the links count, and message automatic reading are
controled here. I unchecked the first 2 boxes and left the third one
checked. Thus, I have messages reading automatically without the other
verbage. Even if the message should start reading below the top, at least,
all I need to do is press Control+Home. I have only made these changes
recently, so I'm still experimenting a bit.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-04 Thread Ken Chernack
Hi
I use the control home technique to get to the top of the email text.
Why?
IMHO, it is not totally in the reader's control to start at the top since
the sender, based on how they end the email, has the control.
If the sender just ends the email at the bottom, I have found that that
position is what I inherit as the reader.
If the sender ends the their email by going back to the top of it before
sending it, then you start at the top.

This logic works most of the time, but since the reader does not control the
sender's client, it turns out to be a crap shoot, thus
The control home behavior is constant and works to get you starting to read
at the top of the email.

My 2 cents.
Ken

with every message. I can not tell when it does, but most of the time it
will do it. I just go to the top of the message with ctrl home and start
reading and all is well other wize.

While on my list of messages in my in box, I pressed the control, shift, and

to the one that I wanted I pressed the tab again and then pressed the space

Outlook 2010. Here's what did work for me, to the extent I can recall the
steps I just took. NO ribbon involved.

Look for a folder named "Search." You should find it easily with
first-letter navigation in the folders list.
Press enter, then I think tab.
As I recall, you're shown a button enabling you to create a new folder.
Press spacebar.
Here you're taken through the two-or-three step process to create an
"Unread" folder. This folder automatically collects all unread messages.

In the future, you can find that Unread folder with first-letter navigation
or by going to the "Search" folder and pressing right arrow.

I'm sorry I can't be completely sure about each step. Once I created the
Unread folder, I couldn't go back. However, once I landed on Search, pressed
enter and tab, everything after that seemed intuitive.

To view all unread messages across multiple folders, use a Search Folder. By
default, a Search Folder named Unread Mail appears in the Navigation Pane
under Search Folders. If the Unread Mail Search Folder is missing, you can
create it by doing the following:

1. In Mail, on the Folder tab, in the New group, click New Search Folder.
2. Under Reading Mail, click Unread mail, and then click OK.

works as expected. Thanks again.

You need to be in an open message, at least in Outlook. Outside a message,
this option doesn't appear.

Is there a key command when you are in your inbox, and you have a lot of
emails in there to get to your unread emails?
I keep a lot of emails that I have already read.

I do the same here in outlook 2010, and if I wish to keep a message, a

control key plus letter D to delete the message and open the next E mail

Yes, you have to go into setting for OE 2010 and check a check box to do
this key combination. If I see where that setting is, I will write back.

Thanks for all the help.
I'm using outlook 2010.

Hi Patty, using outlook 2016 here. Pressing Insert+V, arrowing down and
checking the setting Messages automatically read to checked. Works for me.
When I open a new email, Jaws reads from the top down. But most of the time,
I just press control, to silence Jaws, press Control+home, do a Jaws say all
with Insert+down arrow. Works just fine as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-03 Thread Jim Flusche
Hi Patty, using outlook 2016 here. Pressing Insert+V, arrowing down and
checking the setting Messages automatically read to checked. Works for me. When
I open a new email, Jaws reads from the top down. But most of the time, I just
press control, to silence Jaws, press Control+home, do a Jaws say all with
Insert+down arrow. Works just fine as well.

Again, you do the control delete while in an open message.

is so fast, it hardly matters. Also, this combination gives me control over the

Adrian, amen. Nice that windows and jaws give us a number of options to
navigate the computer. Issue for my 73 year old brain is remembering the
options. That is the joy of this list to help reinforce commands.

This is one of those situations where describing the process is more arduous
than just doing it. Control-home is no big deal, any more than alt-numpad2,
escape or control-d are. Soon enough habits are ingrained, and the process
takes no time or even thought. Now, as for other workarounds, they can be
annoying and time-consuming.

Dave, good point. I usually only use the control d command when reading my
various groups like this jaws list where I read and want to delete. As
noted, you can always press escape to get back to the list of messages as
noted earlier.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-03 Thread Adrian Spratt
Okay, I just tried to go through those steps, but they didn't work on my
Outlook 2010. Here's what did work for me, to the extent I can recall the steps
I just took. NO ribbon involved.

Look for a folder named "Search." You should find it easily with first-letter
navigation in the folders list.
Press enter, then I think tab.
As I recall, you're shown a button enabling you to create a new folder. Press
spacebar.
Here you're taken through the two-or-three step process to create an "Unread"
folder. This folder automatically collects all unread messages.

In the future, you can find that Unread folder with first-letter navigation or
by going to the "Search" folder and pressing right arrow.

I'm sorry I can't be completely sure about each step. Once I created the Unread
folder, I couldn't go back. However, once I landed on Search, pressed enter and
tab, everything after that seemed intuitive.

Patti,
The solution in Outlook 2010 and above (and possibly also below) is to create a
new folder that recognizes all unread messages and places them there. The
messages also stay in their original folders. This folder just makes it easy to
find them all in one place.

Below are instructions that I'm copying from
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/View-only-unread-messages-f2c8450c-9cd0-4037-a5d3-26f6946727ca

To view all unread messages across multiple folders, use a Search Folder. By
default, a Search Folder named Unread Mail appears in the Navigation Pane under
Search Folders. If the Unread Mail Search Folder is missing, you can create it
by doing the following:

1. In Mail, on the Folder tab, in the New group, click New Search Folder.
2. Under Reading Mail, click Unread mail, and then click OK.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

Hey Gang,

I haven't heard anything, so I thought I would try it again, smiles.

Every time I open up an email it starts reading in the middle, or sometimes
at the bottom.

How do I get it to read at the top?

I'm using windows10, jaws18, MS2010, and outlook, on a 32 bit computer.

Thanks Patti

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-03 Thread Adrian Spratt
This is one of those situations where describing the process is more arduous
than just doing it. Control-home is no big deal, any more than alt-numpad2,
escape or control-d are. Soon enough habits are ingrained, and the process
takes no time or even thought. Now, as for other workarounds, they can be
annoying and time-consuming.

When reading my messages in outlook 2010, I open the first message and it
reads the E-mail. To close this message and delete the message, I do
control key plus letter D to delete the message and open the next E mail
which is read from top to bottom without headers.
Again, you do the control delete while in an open message.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-03 Thread David Ferrin
Quite some years ago it was possible to force JAWS to start reading at the
top of an email message in OE and if memory serves I might have been able to
do it in the old windows mail that came with Vista. If I ever track down the
function and there are probably various because of the different types of
messages that arrive in the average persons inbox it might be possible to
recreate that little trick by forcing JAWS to begin reading at the top.

I admit to most likely needing some help in that effort, but it should be
possible. Then to make it work in all clients would be the big job
especially Since I don't have but a couple of them in total, IE outlook 2007
and live mail 2009 & 2012. That first option isn't even installed at this
point.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opening up an email

2017-06-02 Thread Adrian Spratt
Patti, for years now, I've been in the habit of pressing control-home when I
open an email message. This does two things. First, it momentarily shuts JAWS
up. It also places focus at the top of the message field and JAWS starts
speaking from there. An extra keystroke, but it's such a habit that I don't
think about it anymore.

Hey Gang,

I haven't heard anything, so I thought I would try it again, smiles.

Every time I open up an email it starts reading in the middle, or sometimes at
the bottom.

How do I get it to read at the top?

I'm using windows10, jaws18, MS2010, and outlook, on a 32 bit computer.

Thanks Patti
