 Is the idea behind the snapshot versions in the repository
 that you can just update them, or do I need to create a snapshot2?

 About import in component-info.xml.
 I checked the component-info.xml for jbossxb. It doesn't
 contain any imports while there are dependencies at least on
 xerces and oswego concurrent.
 Should I declare them?

  Will Tomcat 6 have better integration with JBoss and Apache?
  I've seen a recurring problem with Tomcat 5 returning 404's during
  redeployment. If it returned a 500 plus error it would
 force apache

 OK, I guess I'm confused. When we started using the
 repository someone broke out all the jars that MyFaces needs
 and put them in build-thirdparty.xml. (All except jstl.jar?)
  So that's the pattern I followed.

 However, it doesn't appear that anything except MyFaces
 relies on jars such as commons-beanutils.jar and the others
 that end up in jsf-libs.

 Is it the rule that if more than one component relies on a
 jar then it goes in build-thirdparty.xml? If so, why were
 those others put in there and how do I know if more than one
 component relies on it?

 What am I missing?

 Also, what do I need to do to fix it all?

Re: [JBoss-dev] Why was apache-lang added to build-thirdparty.xml?

2006-06-27 Thread Scott M Stark
If jstl is not part of the myfaces dist it should not be bundled with
it. If it is part of the myfaces dist but could be used elsewhere then
it could be separated if there is such a usecase. If it is part of the
myfaces dist I would not unbundled jstl until there is an independent
need for jstl. See Thirdparty Dependency and Maintenance in the
following for an example of how to declare dependencies in a component.

Got itI think.

So right now in the repository we have:

apache-myfaces/1.1.1/lib/myfaces-api.jar
apache-myfaces/1.1.1/lib/myfaces-impl.jar
apache-myfaces/1.1.1/lib/jstl.jar

What happens when a new component wants to use jstl.jar?
How would anyone easily know that jstl already exists in the repository?
How does anyone know what version of jstl has been bundled with MyFaces?

It would make more sense to let jstl have its own space in the
repository:
apache-jstl/1.0.0/lib/jstl.jar

If this is done then is there currently a way to let
apache-myfaces/1.1.1/component-info.xml reference version 1.0.0 from
apache-jstl?

If so, I'd like to take that approach.

Re: [JBoss-dev] Leading slashes on jars in build path

2006-06-26 Thread Scott M Stark
I see similar issues. I just updated the jbossmc checkout which includes
the container project. I'm seeing the following error in the Problems
panel:

SeverityDescription ResourceIn Folder   Location
Creation Time
2 Project container is missing required library:
'/thirdparty/jboss/common/lib/jboss-common.jar' container
June 26, 2006 8:58:30 PM

Even though the thirdparty project does include
jboss/common/lib/jboss-common.jar, and the container Java Build Path
refers to thirdparty/jboss/common/lib/jboss-common.jar and shows as
valid.

It seems like this is due to the projects workspace being out of date.
If I go and update (F5) each project the error clears.

Subject: [JBoss-dev] Leading slashes on jars in build path

I've noticed that some (most?) of the library entries on the Java build
path (Eclipse) for many of the projects start with a leading slash:

/thirdparty/jboss/profiler/jvmti/lib.

This means on my system that the libraries cannot be found since I do
not checkout jboss head into the root of the volume.

So, every time I update from CVS I have to remove all the leading
slashes so eclipse relative to the top of my workspace where the
libraries will be found.

Is there any reason for having the leading slashes? Or perhaps I am
doing something wrong and somehow I can get eclipse to interpret the
leading slash as being at the root of my workspace.

Any ideas?

  So at the end of the day, the Tomcat code in JBoss will not exactly

  I know we have been maintaining full Tomcat source within
 the JBoss AS

  Do you guys think it makes sense to check in all of the JSF source

 Hi Scott,
 with regard to the current TC6 integration that Bill
 undertook in HEAD:
http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-3330

 http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bbop=viewtopict=85382

 This has placed a need for JDK5 in HEAD as TC6 needs it.

 You will need to make a decision to make HEAD requiring JDK5.

 The deployer code is the same in JBoss Web 1.0 as JBoss AS

 the JBoss AS distribution.

 It may be difficult to continue using a regular Tomcat in the
 future, in which case, as I did for the first JBoss Web (and
 as Bill did - I integrated his annotations fixes now, BTW),
 it is possible to fork a Tomcat tree and maintain it. I'm
 trying to keep things manageable in Tomcat, but things are a
 bit complicated sometimes, there are many people involved
 with many different needs ;-)

[JBoss-dev] BouncyCastle IDEA issues

2006-06-20 Thread Scott M Stark
A concern over use of BouncyCastle as a JCE provider has come up due to
its inclusion of the IDEA algorithm implementation that is subject to
patent/ip concerns. As far as I know we don't have any explicit or
implicit dependency on BouncyCastle even though it has been discussed in
the context of WS-Security. If we actually are moving to requiring
BouncyCastle I need to know why.

For what algorithms? We will not be able to bundle the full BC

that users have to download it is fine. We just can't bundle it or have

 There are problems with the license types of some of the
 newer additions to thirdparty.

 e.g.
 sun-jaxb refers to CDDL-1.0 (it should be cddl?) quartz
 refers to ASL 2.0 (it should be Apache-2.0?)

 Here are the licenses that actually exist:

 I think the thirdparty processing should verify the existance

 We obviously can't trust individual developers to verify
 this, otherwise this current problem wouldn't exist. :-)

 Instead it just gives errors, e.g.

[JBoss-dev] Generic type safety only as good as the compiler

The latest of break of the container tests build by me was due to
eclipse not being strict enough on generic method signature matching.
eclipse 3.1.2 is compiling and running code that will not even compile

have been only a compiler hack.

To pull out the jaxb classes from the

[JBoss-dev] RE: microcontainer-head-testsuite Build Failed

2006-05-30 Thread Scott M Stark

This is complaining about not seeing the test
profileservice from the container module:

_default:compile-classes: [mkdir]
Created dir:
/services/cruisecontrol/work/checkout/microcontainer-head-testsuite/kernel/output/classes-tests
[javac] Compiling 167 source files to

package org.jboss.test.profileservice.simple1 does not
exist [javac] import
org.jboss.test.profileservice.simple1.ProfileServiceImpl;

Looking at the kernel/built-test.xml classpath its only
pulling in the jboss-container.jar and this contains no test classes. The issue
is that the profileservice test impl should be testable from the container
module as this has no dependency on the kernel bootstrap classes that are
failing to compile. The container module has no dependency on the kernel
module.

It seem like a jboss-container-test.jar is needed.

Also, what allows eclipse to see these container test
classes from the kernel project, just the reference to the container project in
the Java Build Path/Projects tab?

[JBoss-dev] RE: microcontainer-head-testsuite Build Failed

2006-05-30 Thread Scott M Stark
  It seem like a jboss-container-test.jar is needed.

 I'm not sure what the question is here?
 If you need the jboss-container-test.jar in the MC testsuite,
 you'll need to include it in the classpath in kernel/build-test.xml

The question is wether a jboss-container-test.jar is what we want to add
to allow container test impls to be accessible to the kernel tests. I
did see how the kernel/build-test.xml is pulling in the container
classes.

  Also, what allows eclipse to see these container test
 classes from the
  kernel project, just the reference to the container project in the
  Java Build Path/Projects tab?

 It depends how you configure the project.
 The default is to include the whole project.
I'm using the existing module .project files.

[JBoss-dev] RE: microcontainer-head-testsuite Build Failed

2006-05-30 Thread Scott M Stark
For now I'm going to move these prototype test classes into the kernel
test source tree as there is not much point to testing them without a
kernel.

 I generally duplicate test support classes rather than having
 one test depend upon something from another test.

 Let alone dependencies across projects. ;-)

It was a dependency on an annotation that has changed its runtime

Are you talking about annotations or finals? That is a known issue.
I haven't seen any other problem as long build automatically is
checked.

RE: [JBoss-dev] trove.jar

2006-05-25 Thread Scott M Stark
This gets to this installer discussion thread:

http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bbop=viewtopict=83584

We need a common approach to defining how a component is integrated into
a distribution so whether a jar is an embedded aspect or a dependency in
the lib dir are handled consistently across all uses.

 Both JBossSerialization and JBossAOP are using trove.jar, and
 on the case of if JBossSerialization is being used for
 communication on UnifiedInvokers, we need trove.jar on the client.

 I used that thing to keep register of references so I could
 control circular references without having to create
 intermediate objects.
 This forum here will explain why I decided to use trove:
 http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bbop=viewtopict=79587

 Right now, trove.jar only exists on /jboss-aop.deployer, and
 in an installation without AOP, JBossSerialization won't
 work, and besides that anyone using UnifiedInvokers with
 JBossSerialization will have to manually add trove.jar on the
 client classpath.

 So... Can we move trove.jar to /lib and /client?

 I agree we need to take care of this on the installer.

 But we are still distributing jboss as a ZIP bundle, and
 trove.jar is only under /jboss-aop.deployer while
 jboss-serialization is part of /client. It would be nice IMO
 if we could move it to a more generic place.

[JBoss-dev] Breaking out the server/metadata classes

2006-05-24 Thread Scott M Stark
One area where there is a dependency on the server module is for the
deployment metadata classes. These classes also need to drop the legacy
XML parsing to decouple the source of the objects to decouple the
runtime model from its source(s). A question has come up as to where
this code should live. At a minimum it should be broken out from the
jboss.jar and exposed as part of an integration spi. What are the
thoughts for a module, jbossxb binding, etc.?

RE: [JBoss-dev] Breaking out the server/metadata classes

2006-05-24 Thread Scott M Stark
I mean all of the org.jboss.metadata.* classes. These are really part of
the deployment layer and this is where the shared usage is showing up:
tomcat, jbossws, ejb3, ...

What we need is the shared deployment metadata model sans the current
xml dependency. The binding of the the metadata source, be it xml,
annotations, etc should be part of the implementation using these
classes. The big issue with making this a truly reusable codebase is
along the lines of the j2ee/jboss specific features. Bill suggested
using the j2ee module as the location for this code. If it was split up
into j2ee specific bindings and deployer specific bindings that could
make sense.

 Subject: Re: [JBoss-dev] Breaking out the server/metadata classes

 You mean the org.jboss.metadata.MetaData class?

 There already is a sort of clone of it in common see
 org.jboss.util.xml.XmlHelper

 It doesn't look like it is used though?
 It's almost certainly out-of-date?

 The real MetaData does need changing like you describe, but
 it does have the problem of mixing J2EE defined stuff with
 jboss specific stuff from jboss-xxx.xml in the same class.
 Sometimes the jboss specific stuff is defined by the plugin
 i.e. XmlLoadable, so you don't even have a metadata class as such.

 I've always thought that this stuff should be part of the
 deployment layer. But then there are advantages and
 disadvantages for the metadata, deployer and
 container/runtime to live in the same project.
 Advantage: It is easy to maintain.
 Disadvantage: It is difficult to expose the model to a client
 because runtime dependencies inevitably leak into it.

[JBoss-dev] Dependency checking in eclipse

2006-05-24 Thread Scott M Stark
I just ran into an issue with eclipse not updating a class after a class
it depended on had changed. In intellij there was a compiler dependency
setting that had to be checked to handle this. I'm not finding a similar
setting in the eclipse java compiler settings. Anyone know if it exists?

RE: [JBoss-dev] basic eclipse project question

2006-05-23 Thread Scott M Stark
I did get the jbossmc module building by importing the jbossmc module
projects, and creating a simple thirdparty project for this generated
content. This is using the same common, container, dependency, kernel,
test, tools modules as jboss-head. I checked in the corresponding
eclipse.psf into the build/mc module.

 The microcontainer currently needs to be built against JBossAS (Head).
 See the project page for the latest build instructions.

 When we've done the SVN/Maven change such we have common,
 test and aop as standalone projects, I'll do the
 microcontainer (including aop integaration) as a standalone
 project for 2.0.0M1

 The sticking point as I understand it, is common's move to
 SVN so we can refactor it without loosing the history.

Currently JBossCache has direct dependecy on Jgroups and JBossAop. The
default already has aop but not jgroups. So that means an extra
jgroups there with the idea that default should be non-clustering
related.

 Subject: JBAS-2267 is the last task!!!

 OptimizedOutputStream and OptimizedInputStream didn't send
 versioning information before.

 These were overriding metadata discovery by always rebuilding
 it from current class, what means if a field is added
 ObjectInputStream will think the streaming should have everything.

 Then my changes basically consisted of fixing writeClassDef
 and readClassDef by falling back to the defaults classes, if
 a System property is defined. From now on if a change in a
 class happens we will have much better chances of being
 compatible between versions.

 But now the problem is on ServerAddress. That class had a
 field added on 4.0.3, (and I thought the field was added on
 4.0.4.rc1), and there is no way to make Pooled invokers
 compatible on 4.0.x - 4.0.2, unless we break 4.0.x - 4.0.3.

 I would like to keep PooledInvokers broken between
 4.0.2-4.0.x, but I can't take that decision alone.

 There is no way to hack this to keep it always work. I almost
 got a way to write a hack (really a hack) using
 Serialization's protocol on a private writeObject and private
 readObject method, but on the end it wasn't possible at al
 because the presence of writeObject was telling serialization
 to send an extra byte. And even that way, the hack was so
 ugly that I didn't want to commit.

 So, can I proceed on breaking 4.0.2 -4.0.x on pooled
 invokers and having it working after 4.0.3?

No, jbossas is not bundling ehcache. I don't see why this is failing as
the default ctor is not explicit and so there should be a public default

 Actually (2) is not an option because it looks like

 version of EhCache?

 Why isn't portal using JBoss's hibernate-int session factory?

 The solutions are:
 1) JBoss Portal's session factory is configured to use JBoss Cache
 not EhCache
 2) JBossAS's installer should include EhCache as an optional
 part of the install
 3) JBoss Portal includes EhCache itself (since it is not a part of
the
 JBossAS install)

 On a related issue, why does Portal have its own transaction
 demarcation? :-)

I thought if javap showed no ctor this implied a public default ctor,
but this is not the case. This version of ehcache has no public ctor so
the 3.2.0.CR2 hibernate is simply incompatible with this earlier version

 Was there any discussion on this or jira issue to track it?

 we already had a discussion about this. Quartz is a popular
 scheduler and is just a plugin for quartz users for MDBs.
 Quartz will also become EJB3's timer service once we get
 around to implementing it.

RE: [JBoss-dev] Thirdparty using java.util.logging

2006-05-11 Thread Scott M Stark
No, we have not run into this. If people are using the jdk logging its
just separate from the jboss logging. I would think we would just want
to use a jdk log manager to bridge to the jboss logger. Or have a jboss
Handler that bridges to our log config. Not sure if that is any
different than using a Filter. Just need to try these out to see which
integrates best.

Subject: [JBoss-dev] Thirdparty using java.util.logging

I've re-subscribed.  Let's give this another try:

The JSF RI uses java.util.logging instead of Log4J or commons
logging. The way I'm thinking I can deal with this is:

1) If JBoss is already set to use java.util.logging, do
nothing.

2) Otherwise, intercept log messages to javax.faces and
com.sun.faces using a java.util.logging.Filter.

3) Convert these messages to Log4J and re-log to the
appropriate Log4J Logger.

4) Return false in the filter so this won't be logged
using java.util.logging.

I assume we've run into this before. Is there a better
solution? If not, is there some common code I can steal?

Also, is there any plan to upgrade log4j in JBoss 5? Right now
it looks like we are on 1.2.8 and 1.2.13 is now available.

 Ok, I'm going to stop working on fixing tests. It is as

 Are you going to look into running the tests with the

I'm seeing this problem in both the installer ejb3 profile, and the

configuration of the ejb3 container that has to be updated for the use

[JBoss-dev] RE: cglib still being seen as bytecode provider

2006-05-10 Thread Scott M Stark
Adding the following to the EJB3Deployer:

   protected void startService() throws Exception
   {
  // todo this should be coming from the DefaultProperties
  System.setProperty(hibernate.bytecode.provider, javassist);

results in the Bytecode provider name : javassist, but cglib is still
leaking in somewhere:

 The new hibernate-annotations.jar (version 3.2.0.CR1) has
 been updated in repository.jboss.com (CVS).

 I haven't found other dependecies to CGLIB, in HA and HEM, let me know

[JBoss-dev] RE: cglib still being seen as bytecode provider

2006-05-10 Thread Scott M Stark
What I mean is externalizing the org.jboss.hibernate.jmx.Hibernate call:

protected void createService() throws Exception
{
log.trace( forcing bytecode provider - javassist );
// todo : really need a much better solution for this...
System.setProperty( Environment.BYTECODE_PROVIDER, javassist
);
}

So the har deployer is really the sar deployer now, where does this
Hibernate mbean fit in? If it does not then won't a har still need
cglib? If it does this is why I was looking for a META-INF/services
bootstrap mechanism.

 How will this be done on the har mbean? It cannot be a
 managed attribute, in that changing it at runtime will have
 no effect (basically the same for ejb3, since it uses the
 same underlying machinery). This setting needs to be defined
 appropriately before the org.hibernate.cfg.Environment static
 initializers kick in

2006-05-10 Thread Scott M Stark
I'm doing it in head now and synching up the hibernate/javassist
versions as they are out of date with respect to the 4.0 branch. We do
need to be able to pass this in as a persistence engine property rather
than a system property for the final release.

 Please change it in head as I will be backmerging everything

I added the following to the head deployer. Once this can be passed in
via the pm properties the system property set can be dropped.

   /**

   protected void createService() throws Exception
   {
  URL propsUrl =
this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResource(META-INF/persistence.prope
rties);
  DefaultProperties = new Properties();
  DefaultProperties.load(propsUrl.openStream());
  log.debug(Default persistence.properties:  + DefaultProperties);
  /* Current hack to establish the hibernate bytecode provider from
the
  externalized persistence.properties
  */
  String bcprovider =
DefaultProperties.getProperty(hibernate.bytecode.provider,
javassist);
  System.setProperty(hibernate.bytecode.provider, bcprovider);
  super.createService();
   }

RE: [JBoss-dev] RE: Hibernate, HA, ,HEM, antlr versions in Branch_4_0

2006-05-08 Thread Scott M Stark
There is no direct use of asm in jbossas so the dependency should be
moved to the cglib components.

 Subject: RE: [JBoss-dev] RE: Hibernate, HA, ,HEM, antlr
 versions in Branch_4_0

 So I've run into problems trying to remove the dependency
 upon cglib for hibernate. The hibernate component-info has
 historically, for whatever reason, to define a dependency on
 asm (this was never a direct dependency). So I defined the
 component-info for hibernate-3.2.0.cr2 as:

component id=hibernate
   licenseType=lgpl
   version=3.2.0.CR2
   projectHome=http://hibernate.org/;
   description=ultra-high performance
 object/relational persistence

   artifact id=hibernate3.jar/

   import componentref=antlr
   compatible version=2.7.5H3/
   compatible version=2.7.6rc1/
   compatible version=2.7.6.ga/
   /import

   export
  include input=hibernate3.jar/
/export

/component

 However, that now leads to failures when trying to build
 because asm is no longer defined as a dependency. Seems
 logical that cglib really should be pulling in this
 dependency, since it is cglib which has this as a direct dependency.

 So it depends on whether cglib-2.1.2jboss (the current dep
 level for JBoss AS) has been used in a previous build.
 Ideally, we should modify that cglib component-info to pull
 in this dependency. If that has been used in a previously AS
 release, then I guess we'll need to put this asm dependency
 at the AS level.

2006-05-08 Thread Scott M Stark
Yes it was used. Its use should't matter though as long as the
cglib-2.1.2jboss declares a depdendency consistent with what was in the
release. I'll test this with an existing release.

Also, cglib has been bumped up to 2.1.3 in the
jbossas/build-thirdparty.xml anyway so just focus on that for the
current release.

 Agreed. However, has cglib-2.1.2jboss been used in a
 previous release as of yet?

 If so, perhaps another option is a new copy of
 cglib-2.1.2jboss - cglib-2.1.2jboss+asm?

[JBoss-dev] RE: Updated JBossASReleaseChecklist

2006-05-08 Thread Scott M Stark
We need to build with jdk14, then rebuild the jdk5 based modules using
java5. The only point of this is to obtain the ejb3 binaries to upload
the the repository. Ideally this should be a separate project that is
built against jbossas integration jars, but we don't have those
adequately defined.

The installer obtains none of the jdk5 based artifacts from the jbossas
canonical dist binary in the repository. These all come from separate
binaries referenced in the installer build-thirdparty.xml.

 I did a run through this. The installer portion is very
 clean, I like it.
 The only question I have is related to the build process for
 the ejb3 portion.

 Previously we would switch the jdk to a 1.5 and build the
 ejb3 modules. I'm assuming the installer now pulls this
 stuff in automatically from the ejb3 profile.

 Will our standard procedure be to create the initial jbossas
 build using a 1.5 version jdk (so that the ejb3 profile will
 be created)?

 I updated the jbossas release to reflect the fact that the
 installer has been broken out as a separate project. We need
 to go through a couple of iterations to make sure that this
 updated process works for qa:

 http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JBossASReleaseChecklist
 http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JEMSInstallerReleaseChecklist

 All of the javaee5 preview technology as well as the jbossas
 dist contents itself are pulled into the jems-installer
 project via the binary repository. I have thrown out some
 prototype binaries for the jbossas/4.0.4.GA contents and the
 jboss/ejb3/ 1.0.0.CR7-jboss4 that are referenced by the
 jems-installer/build-thirdparty.xml descriptor. Let's arrange
 for a walkthrough of a build by Monday.

The _module-hibernate-int-most still has to handle the base hibernate
jars needed for the har deployer. Config specific to the javaee5
jpa/ejb3 needs to be in the setup-ejb3-dist target that is only run when

 Yes. Hibernate-int is the entity that has been managing where those

They should remain in the _module-hibernate-int-most if hibernate as
integrated into jbossas has these dependencies.

 I understand that. What I am asking is how should cglib and
 asm jars be moved into the dist directories now?

   target name=_module-hibernate-int-most
 property name=_module.name value=hibernate-int
 override=true/
 property name=_module.output override=true
 value=${project.root}/${_module.name}/output/

 mkdir dir=${install.all.lib}/

 !-- The hibernate-int module output --
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${_module.output}/lib includes=*.jar /
 /copy

 !-- The hibernate jar --
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${hibernate.lib} includes=*.jar /
 /copy

 !-- ASM jars (cglib dependency)
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${asm.asm.lib} includes=*.jar /
 /copy
 --

 !-- ANTLR jar --
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${antlr.antlr.lib} includes=*.jar /
 /copy

 !-- CGLIB jar
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${cglib.lib} includes=*.jar/
 /copy
 --

 !-- Commons collections jar --
 copy todir=${install.all.lib} filtering=no
   fileset dir=${apache.collections.lib} includes=*.jar/
 /copy

   /target

 Where should those 2 copies happen now? Should I just leave
 it there (I commented it out because it fails unless cglib
 and asm are dependencies of the hibernate component).

So that produces the question: where is the build failing? If removing
the copy of the libs from dist, removing the build-thirdparty.xml refs
to the unused cglib/asm jars results in a build failure, we must have
some unspecified dependency on these.

 But that's what I am trying to change ;) I am trying to make
 the bundled Hibernate use the Javassist bytecode provider stuff.

 But, if I simply remove the Hibernate - cglib/asm dependency
 (from the hibernate component-info), then the AS build fails.

The libraries.ent just reflects the binary components pulled in via some
reference. It does not necessarily reflect valid dependencies. The
current example where this is off is that the jbossas
build-thirdparty.xml is referring to cglib but we should no longer have
such a toplevel dependency.

[JBoss-dev] Updated JBossASReleaseChecklist

2006-05-06 Thread Scott M Stark
I updated the jbossas release to reflect the fact that the installer has
been broken out as a separate project. We need to go through a couple of
iterations to make sure that this updated process works for qa:

http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JBossASReleaseChecklist
http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JEMSInstallerReleaseChecklist

All of the javaee5 preview technology as well as the jbossas dist
contents itself are pulled into the jems-installer project via the
binary repository. I have thrown out some prototype binaries for the
jbossas/4.0.4.GA contents and the jboss/ejb3/ 1.0.0.CR7-jboss4 that are
referenced by the jems-installer/build-thirdparty.xml descriptor. Let's
arrange for a walkthrough of a build by Monday.

I'm working with the build-release.xml as part of the repository
binary/core jars breakout for the installer so I'll test whether this
works. Should just be a matter of setting the mode for the bin scripts:

   target name=bin-zip description=Build zip archive
  mkdir dir=${version}/dist/
  zip destfile=${version}/dist/${jboss.id}.zip
 zipfileset dir=${jboss.dist}
prefix=${jboss.id} filemode=755
include name=bin/*.sh /

In order for the ant zip task to use file modes, you have to use

 I tested it too, so if we zip with /usr/bin/zip the produced zip file
 maintains the file permissions, as long as you unzip with
 /usr/bin/unzip.

 If you use the 'jar' utility, the permission are lost when zipping,
and
 also ignored when unzipping (if they were put there by /usr/bin/zip).

 So a solution would be to

 A) Make sure the jboss bin .sh file have the correct permissions, or
 'chmod ugo+rx $JBOSS_HOME/bin/*.sh' (since those are set in the
bin-tgz
 target, etc.)

 B) zip with the external utility, e.g.: /usr/bin/zip -9qr
 jboss-4.0.4.GA.zip jboss-4.0.4.GA/

 C) Document that the user needs to either use the zip utility on unix,
 or jar -xvf and chmod yourself.

 Can someone from QA comment?

[JBoss-dev] FW: 4.0.4.CR2 distribution (.zip only?)

2006-05-04 Thread Scott M Stark
The tar dist was dropped because of complaints about all the old posix
tar implementations which could not handle the long file names that are
required for unpacked deployments containing classes.

The existence of dos crs should not be a function of the distribution
type. All the .sh files should only be using unix style nl. We had a
filter to set this in the past so that needs to be validated.

 Hi,

 Anyone knows why is 4.0.4.CR2 released only as a .zip?
 The problem is that all files are with DOS line ends, and
 that the execute permissions are missing for .sh files, etc...

 Up till now we had .tar.gz beside .zip distributions.
 Is the .zip only distor going to stay,
 or is it just an intermediate glitch?

 Regards,
 Mladen.

RE: [JBoss-dev] Can we add the aop deployers to the aop binary release

2006-05-04 Thread Scott M Stark
I need all of the deployer artifacts and client jars in the aop binary
in the repository. This is what I'm currently testing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] thirdparty]$ ls jboss/aop/lib/
common-softvaluehashmap.jar*  jboss-aspect-jdk50-client.jar*
jboss-aop-jdk50-client.jar*   jdk14-pluggable-instrumentor.jar*
jboss-aop-jdk50.deployer* jrockit-pluggable-instrumentor.jar*
jboss-aop-jdk50.jar*  pluggable-instrumentor.jar*
jboss-aop.jar*

The deployer is a jar archive.

 OK, so are you saying you would like what goes into
 deploy/jboss-aop/deployer and deploy/jboss-aop-jdk50.deployer
 to go into the repository as a zip file? I am training this
 week, but should be able to make it happen in the next day or two.

[JBoss-dev] RE: JBAS 4.0.4.GA project dependencies

2006-05-04 Thread Scott M Stark
jbossretro should be 1.0.0.GA as there is no change relative to CR1
other than fixing the jar packaging.

 Importance: High

 This is the current jboss project dependencies on JBoss 4.0.4.GA

 componentref name=jboss/aop version=1.5.0-snapshot/
 componentref name=jboss/backport-concurrent
 version=2.1.0.GA/ componentref name=jboss/cache
 version=1.2.4.SP2/ componentref
 name=jboss/microcontainer version=1.0.2/ componentref
 name=jboss/jbossretro version=1.0.0.CR1/ componentref
 name=jboss/jbossws version=1.0.0.GA/ componentref
 name=jboss/jbossws14 version=1.0.0.GA/ componentref
 name=jboss/jbossxb version=snapshot/ componentref
 name=jboss/remoting version=1.4.2/ componentref
 name=jboss/serialization version=1.0.0.GA/

 Issues/Tasks:

 - We need AOP release 1.5.0.GA, Kabir will release it early next week.

 - Scott has produced JBossRetro 1.0.0.GA
 (http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-3108), that tidied up
 the retro jars. Can we just update the
 build/build-thirdparty.xml, or is there anything
 (webservices?) that needs rebuild?

 - JBossAS/WebServices are still on JBossXB snapshot which
 is actually jbossxb 1.0.0.CR4. Can we safely update both,
 since 1.0.0.CR4 is the version that will be used, or Alexey
 wants to make this 1.0.0.GA ?

 - JBossRemoting, (a) the version number shouldn't be 1.4.2.GA
 ??. Second, I don't see any dependency in its
 component-info.xml on JBossRemoting ?

 - WebServices recap - 1.0.0.GA needs update to, jbossretro
 1.0.0.GA, jbossxb 1.0.0.CR4 (or GA), and remoting 1.4.2.GA,
 we is ready.

 - EJB3 should really be standalone for the next release, right?

 If there are other issues, let us know!

 Please, be prepared to help in case integration issues arise
 in jboss 4.0.4.GA, we just have a week left.

 Thanks all
 /Dimitris

RE: [JBoss-dev] This is not a valid version number

2006-05-04 Thread Scott M Stark
Its true about the comparision, but other than snapshot binaries, there
should be no component that is declared to be compatible with a snapshot
release in the public repository as this makes no sense. Use of
snapshots is a developer to developer exchange that requires a local
override. We need to crack down on the use of snapshot. I have updated
the version wiki page to indicate there should be no public releases
declared to be compatible with another snapshot release.

 Nothing to do with aop. I am just wondering about the
 usefulness of a X.Y.ZZ.SNAPSHOT release, since, from what
 I've seen from the listed projects that just export a
 snapshot release for development purposes, there will
 rarely be a need for releasing snapshots from multiple
 branches, except the one where active development takes place.

 Also, if you get to alphabetically compare them,
 5.0.0.SNAPSHOT comes after 5.0.0.GA, no?

Yes,
http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBBUILD-316

 Can't we add some validation that says a release (including
 alpha, beta, CR) is not allowed to depend on snapshots?

Anyone know why I seem to be losing the .svn/tmp dir in my eclipse

change its from from java to simple. I am running TortoiseSVN so maybe
that is interacting badly in some way.

there is something wrong with the build that is adding classes twice.
