That's unnecessary as you can  disable Smart navigation all together.  No
need to revert to an older version of Jaws if you simply don't like Smart

i am not a big fan of it at all. its more trouble than its worth in most

The one thing about it that bugs me is that when you're at the end of a
table and arrow down, instead of being placed at the end of that table on
the webpage, you're placed at the bottom of the webpage entirely. This is
especially annoying as you don’t' know you're out of the table until you
arrow out of it. Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong on my end and simple
lack of familiarity  with the feature, but it has been a frustrating
experience on sites like Amazon.com product pages or banking account
activity pages. All in all though, I do find Smart Navigation to be a plus

From what I can tell smart navigation is not really meant for normal
websites (despite the fact that it was enabled by default). It is
instead meant for certain types of web applications and the like where
controls of various types dominate over text.

I did just that. I upgraded to the Adobe Reader DC, and it fixed all
problems with reading PDFs with JAWS 17. That is exactly right. Have a great

Have you considered upgrading to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC?  This is the
latest, & could possibly solve your problems.  I don't open PDF files often
enough to say whether it will help your cause or not but, hopefully someone
more knowledgeable will let the list know.

For me at work, I am not able to use Jaws 16 or 17 because when reading a
PDF document, if I press alt + tab to move to a different document, my
entire system freezes. Sometimes I can get control back, but most times I
must turn the power off of my computer to re-boot. I contacted FS last April
about this issue. They told me they were aware of it, but that it was an
Adobe issue. I contacted Adobe, and put them in touch with someone at
Freedom, and still the issue remains. I called FS again last week, and was
told that I should not press alt + tab to switch programs, but instead
minimize to the desktop, and from there switch to the other program. This is
fine, but old habits die hard, and I usually end up forgetting and pressing
alt + tab, and then spend the next 10 minutes trying to get my system back
up and running. This is not very efficient, and, in my opinion, not very
good tech support on FS's part. So, I am now forced to use Jaws 15. I
mentioned the fact that we should get a refund for Jaws 16 and 17 since we
aren't able to use them, but of course this fell on deaf ears, as does much
of what I say to tech support. I still don't understand how this can be an
Adobe issue when Jaws 15 works fine with Adobe XI Pro, as does NVDA,
Window-Eyes, and Dolphin. Unfortunately none of these screen readers work
with our proprietary database, or, I wouldn't be using Jaws.

I seem to recall someone else on this list having this same issue.

So, you might want to be careful about updating to Jaws 17 if you are
currently using Jaws 15... it might be a good idea to try using the demo
version of Jaws 17 with PDF documents to make sure you won't encounter this
alt tabbing issue.

One reason not to upgrade is that all the computer braille symbols are
changed to something else. If you do any programming or html coding, you
might not like the new computer braille symbols. As it is, I go back to jaws

If you recall we had the same situation going from jaws 12 to jaws 13. 
Because of the number and type of changes a merge was not possible.  We are 
seeing the same situation again.  I am sure FS will have a merge moving from 
17 to 18.

When Freedom scientific first began way back when their mission statement 
was to provide a program to the blind and visually impaired world that would 
allow them to work the computer using keystrokes rather than a mouse.  We've 
come a long way since then but it seems that part of the mission statement 
has been lost in the mire.  Business has to keep progressing but losing 
sight of your mission eventually reduces all the economic progress.  There 
are other screen readers.  I hope FS doesn't wake up one day to hear that 
their popularity and standing in the blind community has been replaced by 
another company.

Well, I must say that it is most gratifying to see that lots of other JAWS 
users are upset with losing the Merge Utility!  I hate to be the only one 
screaming in the wilderness.  I have already used the below link to

I agree that the more people who let FS know about their feelings on this, 
and any other, matter, makes a lot of sense.  It is the noisy wheel that

I have noticed a reoccurring theme here with an issue that came up earlier
this year and complaints that the admin. Wasn't monitoring the forum.

May I suggest a simple solution that might address this issue.


Perhaps a protocol that requires anyone wishing to catch the Admin.'s
attention to send an email to him that has a specific subject line reading
all caps URGENT ADMIN. And if need be on the admin.'s end sorting email
influx by subject specific to this protocol so that there is no reason for
an email to be unnoticed.


This way if anyone has an issue that they need admin assistance on they can
be assured to get him.

I'm not sure we really need the admin's baby sitting the content of the
forum but glad to have an authority if needed and for this an email to him
directly should suffice.

Thanks for your work as the admin...I'm sure it’s a thankless job...The
forum is invaluable.

He's alive, and up to his neck in college things. If there are issues that
need sorted and I haven't responded to an email, it's because I didn't see
that email. Fix that, and I can fix you. Calling out the admin is not fixing
that. Calling out the admin when you could just as easily resend the email
is a good way to insure I fix it by removing you. You guys know better and
we all know it.

I don't see where the lack of a merge utility is such a show stopper.  It is 
not a question of not providing a merge utility but you simply can not merge 
the old scripts with the new scripts because of the changes in even low 
level function in order to work most efficiently under win 10.  You just can 
not merge.  Now 17 to 18 will most likely be able to be merged because the 
changes won't need to be so dramatic and the functions that work under one 
will work under the other.

Is redoing your settings so tramatic?

JAWS 17 quite ill-prepared!  Clearly, the engineer was "asleep at the wheel"

the Merge utility is no longer installed with JAWS 17 as settings from prior

will replace this utility and provide an even greater benefit for our
customers.

 Brother MFC-2740DW which comes with Brother's software, called Control
 Center 4. It takes just a little getting used to, but I can control nearly
 everything about this printer once it's set up properly. It's fantastic. I

 any problems. Pretty much all the controls read with JAWS. I have found that
 if I create custom presets for functions, the labels that I assign to them

Sharon took Meredith to the Kennedy Kreiger Institute in Baltimore for
evaluation and hoped for treatment. After a thorough study of her history,
as well as examination, they determined that Meredith was not a candidate
for inpatient treatment at their facility.



They did make recommendations with regard to adjustment of some of her
medication and, yet again, more physical therapy to fight damage that has
already had effects on her leg muscles and both sides of her pelvis bone.



It was a letdown after clinging to hope for a couple of months like we did,
but those were a nice couple of months.

What's worse, if you have Windows 10 Home, you won't be able to delay the
updates until JAWS figures out what to do with them. Ready or not, here

There will be no service packs as in the past. Continuous refinements
will be the norm from now on, which are good thing and a bad thing.
Virtual desktops (called Task View) are a way to group running apps
together into workspaces. In other words, you can open multiple
desktops with apps for different purposes opened in each desktop. By
default, when you install Windows 10 and with multiple desktops
opened, pressing Alt+TAB will cycle among apps on the current desktop
(go to Settings/System/Multitasking to change this behavior). This
isn't the same as having two or more user accounts (I for one use two
user accounts and switch between them for various purposes).

Subject: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?



Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest,
and I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail
program; you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF

documents.

(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like
to know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new
operating system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only
benefit I can see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January
of 2020, where Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, If it
ain't broke, don't fix it, apply here? I'd really honestly like to
know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in

mall?

I've actually never had any problems with JAWS Technical Support. All my
encounters have been courteous, and admittedly, when their only suggestion
was to run JAWS in default mode and/or delete all the user settings, I've
complained that it was an onerous thing to suggest, they still didn't 
treat

me in any way a demeaning manner.

Sometimes I've found that my personal attitude at the initial call has a 
lot

to do with how the responder reacts, and I try to have an open,
non-confrontational attitude at the first encounter -- after all even 
though

it's been brewing in my mind for several hours or days, it's a brand-new
situation for the tech support person.

As to Amazon, I find it pretty good to use with any version of JAWS in the
standard  mode. Just use all the different navigational techniques until 
you

come up with a pattern that works for you. I use the navigational keys to
move around, and in my experience, there are a number of combo lists that
come up when you select different ship addresses, recipients, or payment
options. Shipping method tends to be radio buttons.

Also note that if you ;purchase more than one item, and if they are 
shipped
by different vendors, you will need to select shipping options for each 
one

separately, since they all have different shipping options.

I see that you're using JAWS 15, but I don't think that there are any
significant enhancements in JAWS 16 that would resolve your issues.

Even want to use the music player.

Why would any one asksuch astupidquestion?

I  guess we should be permitted to use some  key  Amazon features and not
others.

He  criticized me for using JAWS 15-which was what F S had been
recommending all along.

I have  watched friends use the   Amazon music player and it has a  lot of
good features.  But  F S  I guess would

Drew, it really depends on what you like to do when using your computer.

From all accounts, most of what we as screen reader users do with Windows 7

and 8.1, we should be able to do with Windows 10.  The new Windows 10 has a
new web browser called the Edge, which may not deliver the best web
experience in the beginning.  You can learn more about that by listening to
the Windows 10 discussion on Fs Cast EP 109.  Glen Gordon was a guest on
that show, and he talks in depth about Windows 10.  Also, from what he said
on the show, when you first install Windows 10, you won't have JAWS speech.
You will have to use narrator at first, and then once the set up wizzard has
finished, you can run JAWS and it will work, as long as you have the latest
build of JAWS 16.  Magic users must be running version 13.  I am a little
concerned about how frequently Microsoft plans to update this new version of
Windows.  That was also discussed on the FS cast episode I referenced
earlier.  I wonder how that will affect JAWS performance or any screen
reader or magnifier performance for that matter.  Hope this helps!

When I rebooted an hour ago, I was notified of a new JAWS release. Against
my better judgment, I went ahead with the installation. As usual, I was
required to reboot on completion. After about five minutes, I decided
something was wrong because the rebooting process got hung. So I shut down
the PC and restarted. It took a while, but eventually the PC came back to
life and JAWS reloaded. Ultimately a good result, but the experience brought
back bad memories of earlier JAWS releases. In the future, I'll make sure to
have sighted assistance nearby when I install a new JAWS release, just in
case. I wonder if this process went more smoothly for others.

 to get rid of the thing.  Now, my computer is working normally, but I really
 thought I had inadvertently introduced a virus to my computer (Windows 8.1).
 I'm using JAWS 16.
 
 So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and those with
 psychological needs to inflict punishment upon themselves, I would recommend
 to people that they bypass the tempting advertisements in the Skype email
 message that is likely to appear in your Inbox soon - if it has not appeared

I am unable to access any of the topic issues in the JAWS Help menu. When I
open Keyboard Commands and then select Keystrokes for Popular Applications,
and  then press the F6 key to access the content, all JAWS reads is a blank
page. Pressing the F6 key twice brings me back to the Treeview.



I don't know if this is a keyboard issue, or a PC issue, which I suspect it
is.

Two tech support specialists at Freedom Scientific that I spoke with stated
that they have not encountered this issue from JAWS users.

Any insights or specific corrective solutions would be appreciated.

So far, I have had no issues with the latest update. I am using windows 7. When 
Jaws 16 was first released, it would freeze up on me, but it hasn't done that 
in a while. The only problem I can see right now, is that the MLB scores in 
research it is still broken.

I haven't had any problems with the new update.  However, I have had 
problems in the earlier updates when Jaws16 was first released.  Jaws no 
longer freezes up on me.

Um, I don't find much comfort in this new update.  I'm back to 15, as my
Thunderbird has crashed several times, which doesn't happen with 15.  I

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS for
Windows was restarting over three times a day.  At least I have not seen
this on my machine.  Since the latest update, and I was seeing it very
frequently before the update.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all
FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the
company through automatic error reporting.  While this suggests that the
update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking,
as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out.  Besides,
why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue?  To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.

I recently saw that someone was wanting to find HJPad and couldn't do so. In 
Windows 7, this is fairly easy, but not so in Windows 8.1. I got curious, so 
I started looking around. I finally found it, and here's how I did it.


1.   Press the Windows key to get to the start screen if you aren't
already there.

2.   Tab once. You will land on a button that says apps.

3.   Press the space bar to activate this  button.

4.   You will then be presented with a very long list of everything that
is on your computer. Type jaws. It will automatically go into the search 
box.


5.   Start arrowing down. The item you want is called utilities JAWS
16. I assume if you're using a different version number you would find the 
same thing with the number of your JAWS version. I only have 16 on the 
particular machine I tested on.


6.   Press enter on this item, and you will find all of the things you
used to find in the JAWS program group in all programs on older versions of 
Windows.


Hope this helps someone out.

is more of a resource hog but as long as you auth TWBlue on your

like the qube.  Chicken Nugget is good, but I am only getting it free
for a month.  After that, I will have to pay for it which I don't

TW Blue.  I checked it out and it is FREE!!  Could you please tell me
what other clients you are all using to use Twitter?  Also, If I
uninstall Chicken Nugget and install TW Blue instead, will TW Blue
have all of my current info like people I am following and will
everything be retained that I have already done with Chicken Nugget?
I would rather use a client that is free.  Please tell me about
others, and let me know if TW Blue is the best client that uses key
commands.

If you are using the latest version of Jaws, IE11 is the latest version of 
Internet explorer.  It works with Jaws16.

However if I don’t do any thing for several minutes IE stops and I get the 
message that Internet Explorer has stopped working and asking me what to do; 
Shut down, check the Internet for a solution, etc. Are there some settings 
that would make IE more stable?  Sometimes I can alt tab away from IE and 
then alt tab back and Amazon comes back.   Tom

You do not have to remove it.  You need to check the status of your

How long are you waiting for the loading? If it's Youtube I think it can
take a while to download the video. I'm no expert on this, but 50% of the

Today I went into google, and typed in (Smothers Brothers..Puma)and smacked
Enter. The search results came up with the normal amount of results. I
clicked on the first choice and the message came up...loading
Then nothing happened.
I then hit the alt/left arrow keys and went back to the search field and
typed in (smothers brothers routines) and some of the same results came up
and I clicked on another choice and got the same results. Now I am really
getting POed.
Any thoughts on how to get this thing working again? I also have recently
upgraded the latest version of Silverlight.
Any help really appreciated.
Is it IE 11, Jaws 16 or???

If you're talking about a hot key such as Control AltJ, Go to the desktop 
Jaws icon.  Then press Alt enter, and you'll be into the properties.  Tab 
til you hear shortcut key None, and type the letter J.  Tab to ok, and you 
should be set.  Hope this helps.

The improved Jaws recovery in JFW 16 is very much welcomed and has so far
worked great, but for a couple of instances where Jaws got stuck in some

can just sit back and wait for Jaws to come back on its own without having

Actually, once I learned to be patient, the ability for JAWS 16 to restart
itself has prevented me from having to launch NVDA when things appear to
lock up. About 30 seconds of waiting, and JAWS 16 comes back to life on 
its

own. Still irritating that it crashes, but at least it's smart enough to
recognize that fact and self-correct.

Yes. (I've seen much the same with jaws 16. It's one of the reasons I'm
still using 15.

I installed NVDA on my laptop for those times when a hard reset was my 
only

choice after jaws crashed. I don't like NVDA for my primary screen reader,
but for recovery it works just fine. I have a hotkey
(alt+cntrl+N) that starts NVDA when I need it and it's gotten me out of a
jam several times.

Windows 10 is probably looking at a late 2015 release. If you are in need of
a new system, you should be fine with a Windows 8.1 machine. There have been
many Jaws releases dealing with 8.1 by now with fixes making the user
experience a smoother one. General learning vurve aside... If you want to
skip Windows 8.1, you could also look into grabbing a refurbished Windows 7
computer as a stopgap.
I'm perfectly happy with my Windows 7 computer, but have been considering
one of those cheap Windows 8.1 tablets for a more portable solution as well.

Thanks. I ran the installer and successfully obtained JAWS 16 (authorized by
the current ILM key, presumably because it was purchased since September and
hence entitled to a free upgrade).

Unfortunately, the configuration changes that I had made under JAWS 15 were
not preserved under version 16.

You won't with Jaws16.  The standard will also work on Windows Pro.  You 
will need Jaws Professional if you are working at a business from what I 
understand.  Keep in mind though, Jaws 16 will not support Windows XP any 
longer.

I tried routing the Jaws cursor, but that didn't work for me. I've got the
same set up: JFW 15 and Windows 7 with IE11. However, taking the virtual
cursor off with ctrl-Z sometimes works if I then use tab to get to the
button, but not always. It's really quite strange.

Here's what I can report:

1.  Using Internet Explorer 11, Windows 7 64-bit, and JAWS 15, I was able to
add something to my cart using the regular site.  When I tried to proceed
to checkout by pressing the space bar, nothing happened.
When I used route JAWS to PC, then the Insert 8 (left click) command, I
went immediately to the sign-in page. I did not proceed, because I didn't
need the coffee I had placed in my shopping cart.

2.  I then went to the latest FireFox on the same computer running Windows 7
64-bit and JAWS 15.  In Firefox, I didn't have any issues getting to the
checkout page just by pressing the space bar.

For what it's worth, I have similar issues with Google Voice and Internet
Explorer 11, but in Firefox the buttons all work as they're supposed to.

braille commands if a refreshable braille display is currently connected.

For example, you may need to locate a keystroke for working with formulas in
Excel. Instead of opening the JAWS help topic for Excel and searching
through
all of the available keystrokes, or starting Keyboard Help (INSERT+1) and
pressing various keystroke combinations until you find the correct one, you
can
open the Search for JAWS Commands window while focused in Excel, type
formulas in the search edit box, and then view a list of all keystrokes
related
to working with formulas. Similarly, if you are browsing the Web and you
need to find the keystroke for displaying a list of headings on the current
page
(INSERT+F6), you can open the Search for JAWS Commands window from Internet
Explorer or Firefox, type list headings in the search edit box, and this
command will be the first result.

To search for a command, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, followed by J, to open the
Search for JAWS Commands window. Alternatively, you can choose Search for
Commands
from the Run JAWS Manager dialog box (INSERT+F2) or the JAWS Utilities menu.

It's my understanding that that's the beauty of Jawskey plus windows key

In the past this keystroke was for reporting a Jaws crashing problem to
Freedom Scientific.  It would store the dump file here:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\15.0\Settings\JAWSMemDmp

You would send the file from the JAWSMemDmp folder to FS  they might be
able to tell what made Jaws freeze or whatever the problem is by viewing
this file.

Yes, that is the correct combination.  Insert+F4 unloads Jaws.  Windows plus

Wow! I have no clue how you folks can stand to use GMail in Basic HTML
mode. It lacks even the most basic usability features, such as mark all as
read. And organizing mail into folder hierarchies is truly painful in
Basic HTML mode.

The real difficulty with JAWS isn't GMail itself, it's the browser. Chrome
has serious issues with JAWS, and Internet Explorer has serious issues with
almost every Google web page, including GMail. Currently I'm trying to make
things work with Internet Explorer, viewing the GMail page in standard
mode. Aside from the fact that Internet Explorer keeps crashing, this is
working pretty good.

I agree, especially for someone graduating from OE.

Outlook is a little more complicated, but only a little. Keep in mind to 
press control-1 (on the number row)whenever you get lost. Tab or press F6 
between lists of folders and messages, etc. Be sure to press enter on a 
folder name before tabbing into that folder; otherwise you land back in the 
folder you just left.


The annoyance with Outlook compared to OE is that JAWS doesn't say what 
number message is in focus as you go up or down a message list. there's no 
cure. I've learned to live with it. But Outlook is very stable, even if you 
save hundreds or thousands of messages.

I tried multiple times, always with the same result.

I don’t know if Amazon has changed something, or if the issue is my own

I am brand-new to Windows Live Mail.  Although much of it seems to work fine 
for me with JAWS 15, I am stuck on how I access the list of potential

To compare, with either Outlook or Outlook Express, I would just enter the 
first letter, and JAWS would grab focus to the list of contacts, and I could 
cursor down to the correct one, press tab when on the correct one, and that 
was it.


I checked with that Microsoft accessibility office.  While they were able to 
remote in and shadow me, they agreed that JAWS did not seem to do what was 
needed.


Any ideas out there?  Right now I am relegated to manually pulling up 
addresses from a list I have in Word, and manually pasting that in.  I 
assume there is a better way?

As far as I know, I'm running the latest JAWS 15 (unless a new one has
come out in the last couple of days), and I've never seen this
behavior.  I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I have a
desktop where I use the laptop keyboard layout because it's what I
learned on, and it runs Win 7 Pro.

Come to think about it, it was about a week ago.  I did have to change a 
quantity from one to four, and did it successfully.  And, I was on the 
regular Amazon site.  The only problem that I did have was finding the log 
out link, so I went onto the other site and found it.

You want to go to setting.  Then go to updater.  Tab till you hear download 
and install program update if availible.  Uncheck that box.  That way, 
you'll only get the updates for the previous version.

as someone else already stated, version 2.1 will be accessible when it
becomes available. but for now 1.75 was the last accessible version. and

Version 2.0 is inaccesible.
If you have sighted assistance get them to go to the system tray and right
click the Malwarebytes icon and to choose exit and then yes. This will
disable malwarebytes. Uninstall it from the control panel add/Remove or
Programs and features. install version 1.7.
If you have no help with the system tray here's what to do.
Find the MB icon in the system tray and right click it. Up arrow one time.
You will hear nothing but you will be on the EXIt. Choose enter key. A
invisible dialog box appars which asks if you are sure you want to do this.
Focus is on the NO option so press your tab key one time and focus will be
on the Yes option. press enter now. You should no longer see the MB icon in
the system tray. I was told these instructions by sighted person.
