[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1413440] Re: USB stops working after a while (xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Timeout while waiting for setup device command)

2018-04-14 Thread Daniel Mulholland
FWIW With a Dell XPS 9360 and Kubuntu 17.10, same issue on the latest
kernel and many previous:

uname -a
Linux mulhollandd-XPS-13-9360 4.16.2-041602-generic #201804121130 SMP Thu Apr
12 11:32:17 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lsb
_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10
Codename: artful

I will test the solution mentioned by @s-breedveld of applying:
"pci=nomsi iommu=soft" and report if this helps.

In my case this is a bluetooth mouse which disappears after suspend.

A dmesg output indicates:

[ 3380.759427] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHC is not running.
[ 3380.774604] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHCI host controller not responding,
assume dead
[ 3380.774627] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: HC died; cleaning up
[ 3380.775306] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
[ 3381.059095] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
[ 3381.059098] usb 1-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 4
[ 3381.059408] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, device number 3
[ 3381.059735] usb 1-5: USB disconnect, device number 5

A power-down is usually required to fix this, a reboot does bring the
device back to life.

Bug description:
On my laptop the kernel will sometimes drop the USB hub. After this,
the laptop doesn't recognise any device plugged in to the USB ports -
plugging and unplugging any device I've tried into any of the USB
ports produces no response, not even dmesg entries.

Strangely this also applies to bluetooth - it no longer works once USB
has dropped (possibly the module is hung of the bus internally).

Once this has happened only a reboot fixes it; I've not managed to
find any combination of module unload/reload or suspend cycles to
  reinitialise things correctly.

Bug description:
ubuntu 16.04.3 on x60 lenovo laptop

previous version of linux 4.10.0-42 works without problems.
as well older versions linux 4.10.0-38 works without problems.
even the 4.4.0-96 works without problems.

at linux 4.13.0-32 the display freezes with 2 top lines fixed.
however the login greeter still works, you can even login. but you
cannot see anything you typed. alt-ctrl-f1 will work. and you can
see the display working again, however the top 2 lines remain fixed.
you can do ls and clear, etc. however no gui display.
i only installed the linux-*4.13.0-32 packages and it freezes the
display when you reboot. 7 packages in all.

  hope you guys fix it.

Title:
  Random total system freezes (resolved)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I have an Intel 7260 WiFi card in my desktop (lspci output: 09:00.0
Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev bb)), running
18.04. All the way since 17.04 I have experienced random freezes,
where the entire system would be unresponsive, I was unable to
Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a different console, and I couldn't connect to it via
ssh. After upgrading to 17.10 (and a fresh install of 17.10), and
subsequently upgrading to 18.04, the issue intensified, appearing at
least hourly, often quicker than that, and only a hard reset would let
me access my system again. The issue is also present in Linux Mint
18.3. Freezes could happen at any time, regardless of usage (or just
  idling).

After getting a tip that this might be caused by the WiFi card, I
looked at the provided firmware from Intel's site, and compared the
files to the files present in /lib/firmware/. The file provided by
Intel for my specific card is iwlwifi-7260-14.ucode, but the files
  present in the folder were the numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, and
  17. Downloading the firmware from Intel, and adding the -14 file to
the folder solved the issue of the screen freezing, and the issue has
not appeared for the ten hours I've been running since applying the
  fix.

Title:
  Some function keys not working

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I have an ASUS UX305C laptop, and some of the function keys do not
  work.

  The keys in question:

  fn - airplane mode (f2)
  fn - brightness down (f5)
  fn - brightness up (f6)

I followed the troubleshooting guide at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting with the following results:

  1. acpi_listen gives no output when those keys are pressed
  2. xev gives no output when those keys are pressed

The keys work on Windows 10. On a more recent version of the similar
laptop UX430UA-DH74, using the same version of Ubuntu 16.04.3, the
  same keys work properly.

Bug description:
I tried to update the linux image normally this morning (paris time).
However it hanged, so I had to kill the process from the command line.
After that I tried to remove the offending package so I could run apt
again. That did not work, and after a reboot a few hours later, I had
to go into an old kernel and run dpkg --configure -a to fix things.
  This time it worked.

After that I gave this linux image another shot by running apt install
linux-image-generic. This seemed to work, but after a reboot I got a
request for a bug report. After that I filed this bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1746740] Re: XPS13 L322X Bionic (daily dev) touchpad laggy

2018-04-14 Thread seanlano
I've updated my patch to libinput, in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990#c25

Hopefully the devs there will shortly be able to revert the older patch,
apply the new one, and then it will make it's way into Bionic.

Public bug reported:

Using Cinnamon on 18.04 Beta 2. (Description: Ubuntu Bionic Beaver

Bug description:
  Linux doesn't support this capture.
  Link to patch

I tested it on Ubuntu 16.04 - OK.
It will be great if this patch is built-in to kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1748565] Re: Kernel regularly logs: Bluetooth: hci0: last event is not cmd complete (0x0f)

2018-04-14 Thread Hergeir Lognberg
I'm also getting the same error: "Bluetooth: hci0: last event is not cmd
complete (0x0f)"
The message always appears as Bluetooth audio starts to skip.

Also the device keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.
There is no message specific to when the device disconnects.
But every time the device reconnects it gets mapped with new input number:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711407] Re: unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free

2018-04-14 Thread Jiri Horky
Hi Dan,

so here are the information for the latest kernel
(4.13.0-38.43+hf1711407v20180413b1):

The bug got reproduced:

If I grep the netns: 8d2dc3d34800, it is visible that during first
10 minutes, it outputs more info, then until ~ 1 hour, it says the same
message more frequently and then only outputs it ever hour.

The machine continue to run and the docker is still able to create new
instances, i.e. there is no complete lock out.

The machine continued to run further, and after an ~hour , 3 namespaces
leaked. The machine now has load "3", which seems to be an artifact of
this. Other than that, it seems to continue to run!

  [Impact]

When shutting down and starting containers the container network
namespace may experience a dst reference counting leak which results
in this message repeated in the logs:

unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free. Usage count =
  1

This can cause issues when trying to create net network namespace and
thus block a user from creating new containers.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Some systems experience kernel lockups after updating to the latest
intel-microcode
package or when receiving updated microcode from a BIOS update.

   * In many cases, the lockups occur before users can reach the login screen
which makes
 it very difficult to debug/workaround.

  [Test Case]

   * The most reliable test case currently known is to install the sssd
package. Lockups
may occur during package installation (disable IBPB by writing 0 to
/proc/sys/kernel/ibpb_enabled to prevent this from happening). A lockup
will most
likely occur just after booting the system up as the lock screen is
displayed.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix is in the task switching code of the kernel so complexity of the
change is
 relatively high.

  [Original Report]

I don't know if this is a problem with the kernel or the microcode,
but we have a significant number of computers in our organization (on
both 16.04 and 17.10) that fail if they have both updated. Booting
  with either linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic or intel-microcode
3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu17.10.1 allows all these computers to
  boot.

  ## Workaround ##
  1. Boot the system with the dis_ucode_ldr kernel boot parameter to temporary
avoid the problem:
     https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters
  2. Install the previous version of package from

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security-proposed/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/14261530/+files/intel-microcode_3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu16.04.1_amd64.deb
  3. (Optional) Hold the package so that it won't be upgraded accidentally
     sudo apt-mark hold intel-microcode

At the first you should flash the current BIOS version 2.30-1.08 (!).

The Core 2 Duo has implemented the Intel64 extension. You should install
Bionic 64 bit (usefully Lubuntu) w/o Flash.

It exists a serious hardware issue with T61 and Nvdia GPU. This may
affect your device. Plz use a search engine!

Title:
XPS 13 9360 trackpad locks into scroll mode

Status in Dell Sputnik:
  Invalid
Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Hello,

I'm running Linux on a Dell XPS 13 (9360) laptop.

I find that upwards of 10 times per day, my trackpad gets stuck in
"scrolling" mode. Moving the trackpad won't move the X windows
pointer, but will send scrolling events to the foreground window.

When the trackpad is locked in this mode, the touchscreen will still
let me move the mouse cursor, as will an external mouse.

On Ubuntu 16.04 freshly restored from the Dell recovery image, I find
that it's often difficult to get the trackpad to recover.

I do find that the issue happens less frequently on Dell's build of
Ubuntu 16.04 than on other linux distributions and versions, but it
still happens enough to significantly impact my ability to do
  productive work.

The issue does not occur when running Windows 10 on the same device.

I suspect that the issue may be related to palm detection or
misdetecting the user's palm as a gesture to enable scrolling mode,
but have no proof for this.

It seems that I'm often able to reproduce the issue by brushing the
  trackpad with my right palm.

On Ubuntu 16.10, with the latest shipped 4.8 kernel (Linux szx
  4.8.0-30-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 2 03:43:27 UTC 2016 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), with the extra xinput configuration below, I
am able to get the trackpad to recover, simply by clicking the
  trackpad:

  /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-libinput.conf:

  Section "InputClass"
  Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall"
  Driver "libinput"
  MatchIsTouchpad "on"
  MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
  Option "Tapping" "True"
  Option "DisableWhileTyping" "True"
  Option "NaturalScrolling" "False"
  Option "AccelProfile" "adaptive"
  Option "AccelSpeed" "0.05"
  Option "MiddleEmulation" "True"
  Option "ScrollMethod" "twofinger"
  # Option "ClickMethod" "clickfinger"
  Option "ClickMethod" "buttonareas"
  EndSection

In my experience, the problem manifests using both the Xorg synaptics driver
and the Xorg libinput driver.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1763967] [NEW] rmmod b43 hangs

2018-04-14 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with a 14e4:4328 "Dell
Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card". Running "rmmod b43" always
hangs. So far I have only tried it while connected to a wireless

possible, the rapid ctrl-alt-del systemd emergency reboot is impossible,
and only a Magic SysRq reboot works.

This worked in Ubuntu 17.10, but always fails in Ubuntu 18.04.

(I was unloading the module before suspend due to occasional problems
after resume. I tracked this down when wondering why suspend was
hanging. Even running the "rmmod b43" on its own without suspend
happening causes the hang. Right now I disabled that automatic
unloading.)

since this has been closed as "invalid", is this to mean that everyone has
concluded it is a hardware issue? - is there any workaround in software? (my

I do find that the issue happens less frequently on Dell's build of
Ubuntu 16.04 than on other linux distributions and versions, but it
still happens enough to significantly impact my ability to do
  productive work.

The issue does not occur when running Windows 10 on the same device.

I suspect that the issue may be related to palm detection or
misdetecting the user's palm as a gesture to enable scrolling mode,
but have no proof for this.

It seems that I'm often able to reproduce the issue by brushing the
  trackpad with my right palm.

On Ubuntu 16.10, with the latest shipped 4.8 kernel (Linux szx
  4.8.0-30-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 2 03:43:27 UTC 2016 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), with the extra xinput configuration below, I
am able to get the trackpad to recover, simply by clicking the
  trackpad:

  /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-libinput.conf:

  Section "InputClass"
  Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall"
  Driver "libinput"
  MatchIsTouchpad "on"
  MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
  Option "Tapping" "True"
  Option "DisableWhileTyping" "True"
  Option "NaturalScrolling" "False"
  Option "AccelProfile" "adaptive"
  Option "AccelSpeed" "0.05"
  Option "MiddleEmulation" "True"
  Option "ScrollMethod" "twofinger"
  # Option "ClickMethod" "clickfinger"
  Option "ClickMethod" "buttonareas"
  EndSection

In my experience, the problem manifests using both the Xorg synaptics driver
and the Xorg libinput driver.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1746740] Re: XPS13 L322X Bionic (daily dev) touchpad laggy

2018-04-14 Thread Bib
Thank you Sean. I tried and needed to change a bit your tweak so that it
matches :
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104990#c23
Been a pure newb and the trial was so hard for me, I don't feel I'm
courageous enough to push anything in the git.
Can I hope you'll do it or do I have to work this myself for the community?

Best thanks and regards
Fabrice

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1763202] Re: Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen. HDMI not working for external monitor

I've upgraded the kernel to 4.15 and now I can use the external monitor
with the Lenovo X1 Carbon! Hooray! Thanks!

Title:
Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen. HDMI not working for external monitor

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  I have an X1 Carbon 6th Gen. (Intel Core i7 8th Gen, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB
  SSD).

When I try to attach an external monitor via an HDMI cable the monitor
receives no signal. Similarly, when I use the Thunderbold dock and
attach two monitors (one via HDMI, one with DisplayPort) only the
monitor attached with DisplayPort works; the monitor attached with
  HDMI stays black.

This made me think if this is really a bug in the software. I saw people
describing this issue with Windows installed; the solution was to hit a special
key combination. Unfortunately, the multimedia keys all not all functional,
specifically the F7 key, which seems to meant for "activate external monitor",
has no function.

The attached v4.13 patch is a version of the patch applies to the vanilla v4.13
kernel.

Bug description:
  Description: kernel: fix rwlock implementation
Symptom: Kernel hangs, due to deadlock on an rwlock.
Problem: With upstream commit 94232a4332de ("s390/rwlock: improve writer
fairness") rwlock writer fairness was supposed to be
implemented. If a writer tries to take an rwlock it sets
unconditionally the writer bit within the lock word and waits
until all readers have released the lock. This however can lead
to a deadlock since rwlocks can be taken recursively by readers.
If e.g. CPU 0 holds the lock as a reader, and CPU 1 wants to
write-lock the lock, then CPU 1 sets the writer bit and
afterwards busy waits for CPU 0 to release the lock. If now CPU 0
tries to read-lock the lock again (recursively) it will also
busy
wait until CPU 1 removes the writer bit, which will never
happen,
since it waits for the first reader on CPU 0 to release the
lock.
Solution: Revert the rwlock writer fairness semantics again.

The bug is close to impossible to reproduce, since it's a hard to hit
race. So I could only verify that the kernel/system still boots and did
some basic tests - which all passed.

Yes, the bug is also present in v4.13. I attached a kernel patch agains
vanilla v4.13 that is supposed to fix the bug for this kernel version as
well.
