Hi everyone.
I just recieved a Revmaster 2100D today. The engine appears to be in
excellent condition. I am wondering if any of you fly with this motor and
if so what carb and size do you use??
  Thank You.

KR> Micro over "Smooth Prime"?

2016-09-07 Thread Doran Jaffas
In my experience there is not. Just color sand with 320 or 400 and go ahead
with the final prep. should work out okay.
Netters

I have been priming my plane with "Smooth Prime" and unfortunately I have
found a few minor areas that will require a little touch-up micro. Too big
to fix with future priming and blocking prior to final paint. Is there a
problem to apply micro over "Smooth Prime"? Any special prep to insure
bonding?

KR> Fuel gauges- senders

2016-09-04 Thread Doran Jaffas
This is a simple answer so please don't take offense.
I always do a visual check. Top off before each flight. Then time the
fuel usage by engine run time.
I am flying a Tri Pacer that I use that system with and have a stock KR
2 that should be ready in a few months that I will also do that with. There
is a visual guage in the KR 2 but will still go by engine run time.
Not very sophisticated I know but safe.
 Good Luck.

KR> First flight

2016-09-02 Thread Doran Jaffas
I concur with that. I did 10 or 12 on my Sonerai 2. When I came in over the
fence with oil on the windshield the landing configuration was familiar and
the resulting landing though blind in front was a good one. Get very
familiar with the ground cues.

KR> KR roll over protection

2016-08-31 Thread Doran Jaffas
Thanks. I am planning to use aircraft heavy wall tubing or even more
abrasive...steel...wondering how they are being set. I do not want to drill
into my rear spar. Suggestions? The force of a roll over can be many times
the weight of an aircraft. A friend has a brake lock on his Mustang and he
went over. He was fortunate. He recovered from a broken neck and rebuilt
his bird. I don't really want that to happen.

Thanks. I am going to try and get down to Nappanee Indiana this morning to
pick up a Volkswagen engine. I called Great Plains and they have the
accessories for the conversion for around $2,000. Something I will take my
time building over the next 2 or 3 months.

KR> Wankel Rotary

2016-08-25 Thread Doran Jaffas
Has there been a successful installation of a Wankel rotary in a KR2? I
have a chance to pick one up that came out of an airplane but I wanted to
check hete first. No turbo on this one.
 Thanks.

KR> Speeds

2016-08-20 Thread Doran Jaffas
Hello Everyone
I've read quite abit about expected airspeeds. Some contradicting each
other.
Depending on the engines used there seems to be quite a variation
My question is simply this; On a stock retractable gear KR2 what is the
maximum safe continous safe real world operating speed assuming a properly
built aircraft?
May have been already asked so feel free to point me in the right
direction.
   Thank You

KR> Kr2s Engine?

2016-08-19 Thread Doran Jaffas
Just spoke with Bill Clap owner of Azalea Aviation in Adel Georgia.
He sells kits and Corvair conversions. He has owned several KR's as well.
His engines have been on the market for a while now.
 Just a thought.

Ps. I am purchasing a VW engine mount from him.

KR> KR2S gross weight question

2016-08-19 Thread Doran Jaffas
I will add one more thought here. In many...not all small aircraft the wing
are just wont lift the weight it would take to break it in NORMAL flight .
As stated by the previous indivdual...aerobatics adds another and lighter
number to normal gross weight.
I am new to KR aircraft as well and have spoken with some very
knowledgeable folks on here and I plan to use a general number they have
expressed and minus 5% to be extra careful until I understand her needs and
my ability with my KR2 grows.

KR> Cross Country Planning

2016-08-18 Thread Doran Jaffas
As far as the VW goes. I have flown behind several. They have basic
maintenance requirements but I trust them as much as a Lycoming or
Continental. Time between overhaul is significantly (500hrs for a starting
point) shorter but as long as they are not overbuilt they will serve you
well. With the VW...simple is the watch word. Good crank. High quality
cylinders. Accepted and proven carburetors. Magnetos or solid state
ignition both work but again...use whats been proven.
   Fly safe but have fun.

KR> Cross Country Planning

2016-08-18 Thread Doran Jaffas
I see his point and going direct has its merits at altitude but myself...I
like to see scenery and deviating around the airspace isn't a big issue for
me but then again I also own a Tri Pacer and even with the mode s installed
I avoid "big" airspace.
On the other hand regarding weather a long time 747 Captain once said
regarding weather. " I never check weather. The weather that's there is
the weather your gonna get". Sums it up.
   Happy flying.

You can go into an unusual in a 172 if you're not careful! GPS has
definately made flight planning easier and safer. Just have a paper one
handy following and comparing the two.

It is much easier to use approved equipment but in the US getting something
allowed is less of a headache on homebuilts. Also after the initial
inspection you can add equipment as the mechanic and sign it off within
reason.

I am a pilot for 30 years. I came across the Avare flight app 3 years ago
and compared it to a glass cockpit in a Pilatus while flying from Sparta,
Mich. to Naples, Fla. The app was right on target. We did not use paper
sectionals or plates and filed on the internet. I fly a Tri Pacer with the
Avare app with a paper sectional for back up. I do call flight service to
check MOA activity but I use My Radar and Accu weather app for expected wx
enroute. Aviation weather app for terminal info. at destination. All are

strictly a VFR day flyer.

2016-08-10 Thread Doran Jaffas
That makes sense but a recording stating such when one calls would be good.
I had sort of the same issue with a gun I sent in that had me really
concerned.
Patience goes a long way but customer service stating a particular reason
for delays even on a recording does too.

KR> Fwd: KR2 for sale

2016-08-06 Thread Doran Jaffas
Thanks for the reply. 8-9 k for just an airframe is a bit steep. I have a
complete airframe and am currently looking for a VW engine mount.
Complete KR2's can be had for 10k and really nice ones for 13k. Depending
on ones ability to build their own engine it can cost from a cpl grand to
5k or better so 8-9 for the frame is a bit much.
You are a good man for what you are doing and the KR is a nice aircraft if
constructed and maintained well.
My airframe was built in 1983 and looks so far to be in airworthy condition
after some superficial repairs.
Unfortunately completed airframes don't go for as much as a raw kit.
  Good Luck to You.

I sent in a request to not be notified from this site anymore so I

just made the points made. Good luck. Fly for the joy and gift that it is.
Selfworth really has no part of your experience.
I have met a couple of good friends and we all have experience we
bounce off each other with good friendships be made stronger and knowledge
being gained without the arrogance that appears.
When technical exceeds fun and ensuring the excitement then it has
outlived its worth.
I am better qualified in more types than many but I choose to believe
in the magic of flight and the joy of sharing the experience with other's.

2014-04-26 Thread Doran Jaffas
N186RC is scheduled for its condition inspection May 9.
 Might move it up.
The cowling I purchased from Sid is finished except for minor
tweeking. It is in primer and could be flown. I elected to construct my
cooling boxes and finished installing them on Saturday.
Needless to say the cowling is not as pretty as Sids new one but it
is not bad considering the modifying it went through .
I am scheduled for some refresher tailwheel time as well.
Many thanks to Sid in getting his old cowling to me!

ps. Does anyone know Robert Clark (the original builder of N186RC)?

I just got back from flying copilot from Sparta Michigan down to
Naples Florida with a stop in Athens Georgia and back to Sparta today,

worked beautifully! I forget who originally told me about it but thank you!
It measures ground speed , the altitude , the ground track and heading

2014-03-26 Thread Doran Jaffas
Just a short info here for anyone who might be interested.
Maybe all of you know this but it was news to me but then again I am
technically challenged!
After purchasing my samsung tab 3 and downloading the avare navigation
application I discovered that you do not need a wifi connection to operate
the application. Evidently the GPS chipset works as its own and therefore
you will not use up any data well using this application.
So far I really like this particular app although I'm sure there are
other really good ones out there.

KR> Why we fly

2014-03-22 Thread Doran Jaffas
I hope I am doing this correctly.
There is alot of tech talk on here and I learn everytime and I am an
experienced builder. I tend to get involved with the mechanics of our
aircraft and flying but today I found myself remembering why I fell in love
with flying
Here are a cpl of my thoughts and I would like to read yours if you
are willing. Contact me at kr2owner at gmail.com

 Seeing rainbows from above.
  Sharing flying stories.
The sigh of a perfect landing on a manicured grass runway.
The smiles of a first time passenger.
The quiet solitude of an early morning preflight.
 Engine start up.
The way my everyday world looks from a few hundred feet
up.

  Your reasons?

KR> Knowledge Gained

2014-03-21 Thread Doran Jaffas
Hello Everyone
I hope I'm not blasting this out with a bunch of other link the
messages on this site.
I have set of myself that if a computer was a wooden wheel I still
could not find my way around it! Well, I did!
Thanks to some information given to me by individuals on this
website I finally purchased a tablet that works with the flight software I
have been trying to download! It is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 normally $300.00
new, used ones can be had for around a hundred and seventy five dollars.
I purchased a really nice used one for my son in law so I had a
chance to try it out first but all of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is no matter
what size have the GPS chip in it. And I am really impressed with their
functional quality!
Anyway, N186RC is finally getting some progress made on it regarding
the cowling . The fitting is done and now some what I call minor finishing
will complete it. After that change of the trim colors and some additional
trim color is well possibly a raising of the canopy and the aircraft should
be flying again! All this time over this winter for the sake of vanity! But
it will look good, not a trophy winner but still nice.
Thank you for the advice I have gotten so far and I will continue to
monitor this site for some time.

My texting into a rut made by a truck on the runway and put my airplane on

2014-03-10 Thread Doran Jaffas
Hello Everyone
I recently purchased a Google Next book and was told it has
navigation capability. The store does not seem to know how to turn on the
"navigation" mode. I subscribe to a mobile hotspot from straight talk' my
location services are on as well but when I go to the maps section of
fltplan it comes up " no GPS signal".
I bought a Google android tablet as well. Same story on both. I also
installed the " avaero" program and again " no joy" . They both work on my
Straight Talk phone.
Do I need to buy an external GPS for the tablet?

There has been alot of talk about aircraft requirements but there are
also pilot requirements as well as liberties regarding LSA rules.
Though I am a medicaled licensed pilot , during my recent flight

are "additional" pilot training clauses to allow for airspace use, aircraft
speed etc
I would be interested in other takes on this topic on this site or my

KR> Great Dialog

2014-01-29 Thread Doran Jaffas
Some great comments on stall/ spin recovery. Yes ...I did mean wings
level with rudder. OOPS!
As far as altitudes go I just meant I felt awfully small with an 18 ft
span at that height. You know us "flat landers'!
20 ' and inches ain' much different though I do agree in MOST cases
altitude is your friend though during a cockpit firr in a Cessna I was glad
I was closer to terra firma.
I usually respond off site but once in a whileby the way good to
hear from you Dan. I am hoping to fly 86 RC to the gathering but if
notcomnercial jet here we come!

KR> Cowling, altitudes, stall spin

2014-01-29 Thread Doran Jaffas
Hello All,
Just a quick twi cents worth.
My cowl installation (picked up from Sid) is coming along slow but
sure. Modifying one to fit is probably almost as much work as making a new
one but still very satisfying and much better looking than my original
Cowl. Thanks Sid!
N186 RC was first flown back in 1993 and I purchased it in September
of 2013 the third owner of it! Some cosmetic as well is modifying to fit me
better changes are being done in my two stall garage this winter. I will be
raising the canopy an inch and a half as well as changing the trim color
and adding some extra stripes for better visibility by people on the ground
as well as in the air
On that note it seems that some of you are flying at altitudes that
some of the bigger boys fly at. I remember with my other experimental
airplane at 5500 feet I felt awfully small so I stayed at altitudes at 3500
feet or less because of my model size airplane! Even in the Cherokee Arrow
or going over Lake Michigan I usually stay to 7500 feet or less. You guys
have a lot of guts!
On the stall spin note... There are airplanes with different flying
characteristics... Larry's notwithstanding... I tend to agree with the
other rwriter's statement about please use the rudder For stall recovery. I
would hate to see someone who has an airplane with conventional flight
characteristics try to recover using aileron only in a stall as in most
cases that is an invitation for at the very least an unfortunate incident!
And at the very worst... Stall recovery has been the same with aircraft
from the very smallest to the very largest of airplanes in the conventional
sense! Very few people are qualified to test stall recoveries using
different techniques and even fewer are qualified to do this in
unconventional aircraft. Let us be conservative about what we do and
hopefully what we write and live long enough to pass on that wisdom to
others:

At altitudes above 7.5 I adjust my percentage of power with altitude, not
with throttle. I thought that's what everybody did. I'm normally
flying at around 55% or less with WOT at the cruise altitudes I use.

I'll now shut up on the subject. Here's an article by Mike Busch that
explains all this a lot better than anything further I might have to say.

What kind off maximum efficiency numbers are you guys getting? At what
speed and with what engine setup?

I am in negotiations on a partially built kit with a rebuilt 1600 vw
motor. I will probably enlarge displacement on it, but want to see if a
certain combo gives better economy than others in actual real world
numbers. I have read that peak efficiency is usually near peak climb
speed, which is probably slower than most kr pilots zip around. It may be
hard to get numbers unless there is another efficiency enthusiast like
myself.

I will deffinately do some experimentation with my own plane but since I am
just starting to build who knows when that will be...

2014-01-22 Thread Doran Jaffas
Gentlemen and ladies, though I would consider myself not well versed in
fiberglass laminating I do consider myself as better than average in would
working and finishing using various types of glue in various kinds of wood
together.
Weather hand carving a propeller using two different kinds of wood for
looks as well as to ensure uniformity of the propeller itself or using one
kind of wood in the construction of an airframe, the basic principle of
gluing weather using resourcinol, t-88 or any other type of bonding agent
is to make sure the joints are as precise as possible and the wood is as
clean as possible end grain or sides grain included! Some epoxies have a
filling it capability. Resorcinol does not! And is not widely used anymore
except my us old folks! It is not rocket science. Just clean the sides to
be glued thoroughly and get is uniform of pressure as possible on the glue
joints and let set for the required amount of time! It doesn't matter if
you are gluing a wing or a gusset the principles remain the same. Forgive
me for stating the obvious here I don't mean to sound arrogant!

KR> KRnet Digest, Vol 2, Issue 14

2014-01-14 Thread Doran Jaffas
That somebody write me an email about what I meant My Ride bearing. Good
old voice text, it was supposed to say filing down the piston skirt by the
rod bearing Journal so it is flush with the rod bearing journal on the
piston itself. On engines with a stroker piston assembly is in matching
cylinders the piston skirt but sometimes hit the crankshaft in about three
to four thousands. Of material had to be filed of the Pistons to prevent
cocking sideways in the cylinder breaking a compression ring.

KR> Progress//older KR 2

2014-01-11 Thread Doran Jaffas
Not sure is this is a subject of interest any of you as my aircraft
has been flying with two previous owners for quite some time.
N186 RC is a standard KR 2 that has been flying since 1993.
It is in my garage with the wings of. I have cleaned up the stub wings
at the mounting area, have re-arced the tailspring and reinstalled it. I
also have plans to raise the canopy an inch and a half to 2 inches for more
head room and am currently in the process of retrofitting a different
cowling.
Possibly will convert it to a tri-gear but that being the operation at
it is remains to be seen.
I also plan to add a belly flap.
This also gives me the opportunity to thoroughly go over the airplane.
I would appreciate hearing from those of you that have older aircraft
and what type of maintenance issues especially regarding the fiberglass
that you may have run into. My airplane much to my satisfaction seems to
have been very well built and maintained. Thank you

KR> Prop clearance

2014-01-08 Thread Doran Jaffas
   Alot of passionate responses here.
I did the same thing Tony did. Both on my Sonerai II and my KR 2.
In both cases I felt the same as he did.
There is alot of techno talk out there and some for good reason but I
urge you to be careful. Some of that and how it is presented can have the
effect of causing a new or even a not so new builder to toss his or her
hands up. Airplane builders are a unique bunch but all of us build for the
pride of ownership of a special aircraft. Years ago design was an " it
looks about right" science and many aircraft flew just fine. Obviously
numbers and engineering are important and have greatly improved safety BUT
they are not the end all and sometimes a "look see" is still the best
option.
 Respectfully,

Hello folks, I have a chance to buy a completed airframe the near future

KR> Sealers and UV protection

2014-01-01 Thread Doran Jaffas
Hello fellow enthusiasts
This "info" session seems to have invokef some passionate responses.
Many things can be used to seal wood adequately from airborn
moisture. There is a UV additive available in body shop supply (not auto
part ) stores. It is not cheap but very little is required and the
protection can not be beat.
So many opinions and ways of doing the job are out there that we need
to express what we know without discounting others knowledge unless we know
something is a dangerous practice.
I have been involved with homebuilt aircraft including working with a
NASA engineer on a glider for iver 30 years but still need ti be open to
learning.

KR> Homebuilt pricing

2013-12-29 Thread Doran Jaffas
Folks
With all due respect anyone that has built , sold or purchased a
project or completed aircraft knows that labor on a dollar per hour basis
is never recovered in a sale. Usually 50 to 70 cents on the dollar for
materials is about all one expect. Sometimes less. We build for a variety
if reasons, purchase projects and completed homebuilts also for a variety
of reasons including prideeducation .. and performance but those
are not all inclusive. When claims an experimental is a percentage
along...it IS ONLY THEIR INTERPRETATION of just that. All of us have
differing opinions of this and a percieved value of any aircraft. That
does nout make anyone wrong unless they are INTENTIONALLY trying to
decieve. In 30 years of homebuilt I have never that I know of...run
into this as the stakes are too high for all of us.

2013-12-14 Thread Doran Jaffas
This may sound like a rather dumb question but all of the aircraft
I've seen (KRs) anyway sre painted white with trim colors. Is there any

KR> Correction on my commemt

2013-12-03 Thread Doran Jaffas
I mis spoke regarding stall speeds . Of course the belly flap does not
reduce the stall speed. It assists in slowing the aircraft ONLY. The dims.
will determine the drag and ability to slow down. When adding this to any
clean aircraft PLEASE USE CAUTION .

KR> Folding wings

2013-12-01 Thread Doran Jaffas
I completely agree with Marks statements. I had another home built that
used spring taper pins..fairly quick and easy to remove but still kept the
Sonerai 2 at the airport to avoid eventual wear and tear as well as the
inevitable rash and mishaps involved in towing not to mention the real
possibility of another driver doing something to cause an accident.
To get a slower stall speed flaps, belly flap or even a different
airfoil (check with the experienced on this) are a solution to slower
stall speed.

KR> First flight

2013-11-19 Thread Doran Jaffas
Gentleman I am assuming we can have different points of view for the
purpose of education and not offend anyone. The gentleman I spoke of a
Sonerai flying just like a cub I believe could be a dangerous statement for
some. I have flown many different types of taildraggers including
champions, chiefs and cups along with a Cessna 140.
All of those it is true do have similar flight characteristics though
they are unique to their own. A higher performance amateur built aircraft
does not fly orl land the same. Build a mansion aircraft does not have any
dangers flight characteristics it is still a sensitive airplane. Mine had a
climb rate of 1500 feet per minute and a roll rate of 180 degrees per
second. Please do not take this wrong! I just believe that it could hurt
someone that is a little bit ignorant that they can fly something that is
fairly tame and jump into a higher performance sport aircraft and not have
to the very careful! This is a great website and though none of the
airplanes if flown within their respected flight parameters are inherently
dangerous we must be careful how we use our experience to convey knowledge
to others. My Sonerai was a very nice handling airplane and I do miss it
but none of these aircraft are tame is the previously mentioned Pipers,
Aeronca's or Cessnas. Again I hope no one takes offense to this but I do
feel that it is important that we do not compare our homebuilts to factory
builts when it comes to performance.

KR> First flight

2013-11-18 Thread Doran Jaffas
This has been some good conversing. The advise on going over the aircraft
for a few weeks instead of jumping into a first flight vindicates my
thinking. I put the cart before the horse in buying N186RC in thinking
because of my Sonerai time I could just go. High speed taxi and ground
effect flight humbled me a bit though it settled down nicely. I also
realized because someone else built it that the interior needs to be
adjusted for me. The airplane survived my hanger doors being blown off by
severe winds last night with nary a scratch! I figure this little bird.
snd I have alot of flying together as LONG AS I GO ABOUT IT NO DIFFERENTLY
THAN A FIRST TEST FLIGHT IRREGARDLESS OF MY ARROGANT EXPERIENCE with
multiple types of aircraft.
Thank you gentlemen for the intelligent advise regarding this very
important subject.
