KR> 2016 Gathering Web Page Updated

2016-09-22 Thread John Bouyea
Thanks to Larry & Paul for their call out for my efforts on the 2016
Gathering web pages and registration list. Hopefully I got your caps &
shirts counts correctly!
I missed the event as I was busy sealing up the aux fuel tanks in my wings.
12 gallons in the header tank just doesn't give much range when I have a
personal minimum 1 hour fuel reserve. Looking forward to getting my wings
back on today and getting off the ground again! Hopefully next year I can
fly it to the 2017 Gathering in Lee's Summit.
I updated the 2016 Gathering web page
(http://bouyea.net/KRGathering/web_pages/gathering2016.htm) with what I've
gleaned from the KRNet email list and the photo Lee Van Dyke shared of the
forum. It looks like Larry's at the front of the room. Larry is also at the
front of the list for the most Gatherings he's hosted at KMVN. Nice job!
If you have photos you'd like to share on the 2016 Gathering page, email
them to me (kr2s at bouyea.net) and I'll post them.
Best wishes.

2016-06-16 Thread John Bouyea
Chris,
N5391M came with a Revmaster built for the run of Quickies in the early 80s.
Roberta told me they built a lot of engines then and maybe your engine is
part of that run. When I spoke to Joe about running the engine after it sat
for many years he told me to "change the oil and filter, start it up and see
what happens. You can always rebuild and maybe you don't have to right
away." Turns out to be working for me. I've had to replace one exhaust valve
and I always cut the filter open for inspection. Looking good so far. Your
results may vary. Good luck!

Having small local/regional meets will work great. All YOU have to do is to
set it up and DO it. As Larry has described, hosting a "Gathering" is a lot
of work. I once set up a small meet in Florida, and I had the only KR

many years, and yet, NO ONE has DONE it. There is nothing stopping you from
doing this.

1. Dan is still fielding orders for additional shirts & hats for a

2. As Jeff Scott pointed out, Dan & I forgot to pass the traditional
donation can around after the banquet. If you'd like you can still send a
donation to the dprich01 at comcast.net PayPal account Dan set up and he'll add
it to the amount forwarded to the next host. https://www.paypal.com/home

When Dan processes the last orders, I'll update the "Cash Flow Report" page.
If you find a math error, please let me know directly. Hopefully this detail
will provide some guidance on the income & expense side of hosting a

It won't be my call but, as a member of the steering committee, my

krgathering.org where Gathering info, photos, and financial reports are all
on one conveniently located site. I recall that Mark may have mentioned he
would do it but it would be nice if we had a volunteer to take this monkey
off his back. It requires setting up a web page complete with photos and
Excell spread sheet. Bob Lee did an outstanding job when he had the site
and I gave him a free hat and shirt each year for his efforts and cost. All
I had to do was forward to him the info and it magically appeared on the web
page. Amazing how that worked. Any takers?

It's the difference between $700 for fuel or $400 for tickets, two partial
days travel instead of 4 or 5, and for some, like me that are "sorta" still
employed "sometimes" it's less "no pay" days at work. It would be a lot
more run and exciting to make the trip in the KR though. I hope the flyers
living close bring their KR to drool over. I'm guessing Jeff Scott will get
the "greatest distance flown" award as Langford might as well have tossed
out the possibility like excess ballast right before he planted his in the

KR> Reaming WAFs

2015-08-30 Thread John Bouyea
Don Reid wrote back in 2007 that the WAF bolts function better as a single
bolt in double shear top & bottom (2 total) than 2 on each fitting, forward
and aft, top & bottom (4 total). I know that KRs fly in both configurations.
My KR used 4 per side when I got it and (partially based upon Don's well
explained message) I have flown mine with 2 per side with a compression
spacer between the inner WAF sides. None have come apart at this location
that I am aware of anyway.

KR> Less than 10 days to the Gathering!

2015-08-24 Thread John Bouyea
That's right; the 2015 KR Gathering at McMinnville just around the corner.

Quick update;

*Dan stopped by this evening to pick up the check from Steve Glover
forwarding the funds remaining from the 2014 Chino Gathering @ $3266.12.
Hopefully there will be a full accounting to close those Gathering books.

*I flew Saturday morning before the wildfire smoke brought visibility to
less than the VFR 3 mile limitation. The rest of Saturday and all Sunday we
had vis from 1.5 to 2 miles. If you're flying in, please check both TFRs and
weather conditions before you launch.

*Dan says the banquet menu will feature chicken parm or flank steak so bring
your appetite!

*I've got an air-to-air camera platform arranged for Mark L. to wield his
magic. Sure hope I get the chance for one of his signature photos!

*No promises but Dan's working on a mystery guest!

Looking forward to seeing you soon at McMinnville.

KR> Only 16 days until the 2015 KR GATHERING!

2015-08-18 Thread John Bouyea
Can you give me a big ole' YeeHaaw! Posting another Update.

Dan Prichard, Pete Gauthier and I met last Saturday morning for a review
session. Along with everything we've posted previously, here's the latest;

*The shirt order is going in soon so if you want apparel, please get your
order in soon at http://bouyea.net/KRGathering/web_pages/pre-reg-form2.html

*The awards will be ready for pick-up next week.

*Jeff Scott offered to run a session on weight & balance and EAA Chapter 105
has scales. If anyone wants to use them, please reply to me privately.

*Mark Langford offered to do a session on composites.

*Jeff Bertuleit from Props Inc will do a session on propellers and several
of the airplanes at the gathering use his props.

*Kurk from Dynon will be at the entire event so you have a great opportunity
to get some time with him.

*The "registration fee" is $82 and it includes your shirt, hat, the banquet
dinner and $25 towards defraying the cost of the event.

*The Evergreen Air Museum offers a "15-or-more person" group discount. If
you come to McMinnville & miss the museum, you'll kick yourself after. The
whole place is nicely air conditioned, so especially if it gets hot one
afternoon, it is strongly recommended a group of us walks across the street
as a side attraction!

*Aircraft Spruce, Wick Aircraft and Hegar Manufacturing have all made
contributions to the event. Please be sure to visit the tables where their
materials are on display!

A few other notes;

*If you haven't heard on the national news, there are a lot of wild fires
out west this summer. Be sure to check enroute visibility if you're flying
in. It hasn't been much of a problem at MMV or in Portland but it has been
hot & dry this summer with no major change forecast for Labor Day weekend.

*Thank you to Steve Glover for forwarding the Gathering Fund balance from
the Chino event.

*The airport doesn't permit open flames so no campfires this year. We expect
to have plenty of coolers for root beer and other beverages for hanging out.

*A big Thank You for all the assistance we've received from everyone on the
ground at MMV for their cooperation and support for this event.

*I just found out Collin Hales was camping at McMinnville last week on his
way to Alaska so the ground has already been blessed!

Looking forward to seeing you all!

KR> Huh, 2 Twinked Off Valves in 1 Week?

2015-08-03 Thread John Bouyea
Thank you to Dave & Mark for their stories & photos of "dropping a valve" in
July. I worked as an aircooled VW mechanic for 3 years in the Sacramento
valley and worked on several hundred cars & engines over that time. I only
recall a few dropped valve heads like Dave & Mark photographed. While cars
don't pull the same power demands as do airplanes, they do run at very high
temps in the central California valley. Both of the shop owners were
insistent upon one premise; any cylinder head that came apart for a valve
job always got new exhaust valves. We'd turn the intakes valves & reuse
those but we always installed new exhaust valves. If the customers allowed
it, we recommended and installed stainless valves.

I'm not sure what I'm seeing in Dave's photo. If that is a valve in the
right side combustion chamber, I've never seen one with shouldered head
faced onto a stem. The stem sure looks burned.

Mark,
Congratulations on a safe outcome. Another trip through the tulles and
you've made another great choice in where & when to put down. You kept a
clear head and flew it all the way to your stopping point. That's a lesson
for us all.

I expect you'll have a lot of gawkers so I hope you have a safe trip home.
Looking forward to your write-up after the engine teardown. If you're seeing

The Diehl nose wheel strut on my KR-2 is a bent pipe; that slides into a
pipe socket bolted to the firewall and engine mount. The strut is pinned in
place with (2) 5/16-inch AN5 bolts and metal stop nuts. The bolts are in
close fitting holes match drilled through the strut pipe and the mounting
socket per the Diehl installation instructions. The AN5 bolts are
90-degrees cross and about 1-inch apart. The strut pipe and socket are a
smooth sliding fit.
The strut has a very small wiggle in the socket even with the AN5 bolts very
tight. With weight on the nose wheel and pushing on the front, there is a
rubbing sound due to the strut wiggling.

KR> Update 1: 2015 KR Gathering @ MMV

2015-05-06 Thread John Bouyea
Ok, it?s time for an update! Dan Prichard & I met over the weekend and he wants
to share some news with everyone.

First off; Mark September 3 ? 6, 2015 on your calendar to join us at the 2015
KR Gathering @ MMV.

The Gathering web site is here: http://krgathering.com Click the link to jump
onto the 2015 Registration pages. Please do so if you haven?t already. We want
to get an idea on the number of attendees who are thinking about coming, at
least at this point. This isn?t a commitment, just a roll call.

We have several people who volunteered to host seminars including;

-Weight & Balance by Jeff Scott. I hope to have a full set of scales available
for those who want to go through the process to update your numbers.

-Props Inc. presentation by the owner Jeff Bertuleit & his business site is:
http://www.propsinc.net

-Composites Handling Techniques by Mark Langford

-Panther aircraft and Corvair engine 5th Bearing by developer Dan Weseman &
his business site is: http://flywithspa.com

If there is something YOU?D like to do, let us know and we?ll get with you to
work out the details and get you on the event roster.

Other activity ideas include;

-The Saturday Night Banquet (of course!)

-Swap Meet/ table space

-Air-to-Air photo opportunity

-Local Airports Tour (there are over 10 airports within 25 miles of MMV)

-Group tour of the Evergreen Museum, home of the Spruce Goose
http://evergreenmuseum.org/the-museum/aircraft-exhibits

While these are easy and close-by, there many other things to do & see within
30/ 60/ 90 minutes.

Let us know your ideas on how to make this one of the ?best ever? KR Gatherings!

I use 80 mph over the numbers, and then flare. I really am not exactly sure
the exact landing speed, but it is probably closer to 70, then 60. This is
how I was taught by Terry Chezik and it works well. If you run below that
speed, the airplane get more unstable and is harder to control. It works
well for me on my Trigear.

Over 620 hours now. No crashes, replaced landing gear, or other damage to me

Jeff, You nailed this one on the head. Just try being 6'2", 200# and fitting
into someone else's KR to get some stick time. It doesn't happen. We've beat
the "what's similar" topic to death. There is nothing out there commonly
available that you can rent with an instructor comes even remotely close to
the stick sensitivity in a "plans-built" KR control system. At least that
what I have found out. From my own experience, trying to learn my airplane
and getting the courage up to fly did happen at the same time. I totally
agree with your description of "it may be the only method available." I
almost appealed to the list to see if I could get some stick time anywhere
in the US before my first flight.

My first landing ended up with a bent nose gear. My second takeoff had PIO
that was very uncomfortable. Luckily, so far since then my learning curve
has been successful. I expect we would have more successful (and less
pucker-inducing) first flights in KRs if we had a training and transition
method. It is available in RVs but they are cookie-cutter airplanes. This
could be a strike against our "none of our KRs come from the same mold."

I don't know how to solve the issue. Any ideas on improving our
first-flights?

> When I was young and inexperienced in flying, I found myself in a
gyrocopter at the end of a country airstrip, planning a high-speed taxi run
to "get the feel" of my new ship. I had been running up and down the strip
with partial throttle, learning to power up the rotor by gradually feeding
in pitch as I advanced the throttle bit by bit. It was clear to me that I
had good directional control, and I could feel the kinetic energy being
stored in the rotor, so the next step was to gradually transfer weight from
the wheels to the rotor with a little back pressure on the stick. What I
didn't know, was what the very-brave and very-human pilot would do when the
plane rocketed upwards at very low groundspeed with a fully spooled rotor.
What a view as I lifted off! What an unforgettable experience! What an
expensive, valuable lesson! I never did find my glasses or shoe ( wear laced
shoes, not loafers, oh! and a helmet, not a baseball cap). Learn from
other's, or relearn on your own...I was very lucky. Will you be?
>

Good Story Peter. I had an identical situation with an identical machine.
The end result was that I paid to rebuild a gyrocopter and lost about an
inch in stature with 5 fractures in my lower back. I survived thanks to a
stout 5 point harness and good helmet.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but will anyway. Just my opinion
here. After about 3 runs down the runway with partial throttle, the
airplane has already told you everything it's going to tell you. It sounds
like we have lots of folks on here to want to learn to fly by doing repeated
crow hops on the runway. If that's the case, you may want to seriously
consider finding a test pilot for your aircraft and developing your skills a
bit further with an aircraft with better known qualities. The repeated crow
hops are more about developing pilot skills than learning the aircraft
itself. Here's where reality sets in. I suspect a lot of people on this
list simply can't afford to get time in a similar handling plane with a
similar configuration, or access to a similar plane simply may not be
available. So you may have to learn your plane somewhat on the ground while
you work up the courage to fly it. That's not the best method, but
sometimes may be the only method available.

Ask yourselves this question. During WWII when the military was doing
minimal training of pilots with Stearmans, T-6's, and at around 200 hours,
putting them into a single seat fighter planes,

2015-01-31 Thread John Bouyea
I got my KR back home today at my home strip. I floated more than I expected
but I got stopped in 900' even with our wet grass today and minimal braking
effectiveness. That's a good thing; our strip is 2000' with a ditch at the
over-run end.

Anyway, 14 landings at the big airport and I feel somewhat competent now.
Finally it is tucked away safely back at my home workshop/ hangar again. Let
the improvements continue!

KR> Touchdown Speeds?

2014-12-27 Thread John Bouyea
Thanks for the input everyone. I appreciate you all sharing experience of
your thousands of KR landings versus my grand total of 5. I know I'm going
too fast on final and my PIOs just before touchdown prove it. I've got the
new belly brake down and I'm still trying to learn the delicate touch
required to transition from keeping it just off the runway to greasing it
on, just like Jim Faughn's How to Land a KR
<http://www.krnet.org/faq/chapter11/faughn/perfect_landing.html> says. I've
not yet touched down as smoothly as Jones demonstrates it IS possible. More
flights and more landings to get it sorted out.

I guess why I'm confused is doesn't Joe Weber fly from a 1300' grass strip?
It makes me think slow flight is closely related or is it another thread?

(Sorry if this topic is too many words; I'm seeking safer flying) Slow
flight... I know most builders aren't working towards the slow end of the
flight regime but the range from slow to fast is what makes every airplane
more useful. Van calls it "total performance." If the practical range of
operations is 70 - 165 mph (+/-) that's an awesome range and it makes me
think 50 - 165 is even more awesome. Slow controlled flight leads to safer
transitions from flight to landing/ rollouts. Van's site says: "In the event
of an unavoidable crash landing, (engine failure over rough terrain, for
instance) their low landing speed has been a real lifesaver. A crash at 50
mph is 70% more survivable than one at 65 mph."
https://www.vansaircraft.com/public/rv-design.htm

Flying MCA (minimal controllable airspeed) at altitude lets us dial in pitch
attitude, speed and power to come up with what works to maintain level
flight.

We did plenty of MCA training before solo. We also "dragged the runway"
(level flight about 2 - 3 feet off the ground for close to 2000') as
pre-landing practice. That's what my primary instructor wanted to see while
dragging the runway; if 1500 rpm, full flaps and (what was it in a C150?) 48
mph indicated level flight, a tiny bit less than that would be a gentle
descent (i.e. landing) onto the runway. You can see where I'm going, right?

I guess the question is this: does anyone out there do MCA practice
(maintaining MCA for minutes at a time, including 30 degree banked 360
degree turns in both directions) as a regular training aide? I still do it
in the Cardinal at least every 5th flight. Or did my primary instructor just
brainwash me?

Thanks guys.

I pretty much do the same, but also make an effort to gather data such as
this to pass on to others, as questions like this come up often. I can't
afford to pay much attention to the GPS on my short and narrow runway, but
on a calm day when I'm doing touch and goes at somewhere like KFYM that's a
lot more forgiving, I'll watch the GPS and take my time waiting for it to
gently settle. So much of what I read on the web regarding KR landing and
stall speeds is physically impossible, and I do my best to report very
accurate information without any wishful thinking added in.

A case in point is as Larry pointed out, a case of air speed indicator error
at the low end, which is fairly common. Jim Faughn wrote the definitive
work on landing a KR, but he mentions seeing speeds as low as

40 mph at touchdown. Now that I've pulled the panel out and replaced it
with something semi-"calibratable", verfied against GPS on a calm day (at
altitude), I can clarify that 40 mph is an Indicated Airspeed, not a True
Airspeed. To be fair, GPS didn't exist when he wrote that, so error is
understandable. Having said that, no discussion on landings is complete
without a read of Jim's excellent work at
<http://jfaughn.com/other/kr/uniquepartsofmykr/kr_landing.html>
http://jfaughn.com/other/kr/uniquepartsofmykr/kr_landing.html. I'm not sure
I'd change a word of it today except for the low speed part. But there's
certainly no doubt that he was a lot better at landing N891JF than I am!

On that topic, my wonder-wife read my mind and bought a GoPro-like Sony
HDR-AS100V Action Cam for me for Christmas, which I'm in the process of
mounting in N891JF, which should help nail down some performance numbers
while the camera looks at the iEFIS and iFly720 during the landing. The
camera even has it's own GPS built in, with a speed display option. I look
forward to the information I can gain from this, as well as the critique of
my landings and other antics. And maybe I'll capture a few more sunset

KR> Learnings from My First Flight

2014-11-12 Thread John Bouyea
I promised some feedback after I digested my first few flights so here is
what I have to offer. Please take it for what it costs you; just the time to
read it. I'm open for clarifications or, as noted below, a good critique.

1. Don't underestimate the value of a long runway for your taxi tests.
I figured I could get the information and testing I needed with my 2000'
grass strip. That helped but it proved to be not enough data for me. I did
get the engine running well & the alignment of the nose gear figured out.
That's great but as several of you have mentioned the value of the crow hops
and re-lands was helpful. I didn't get that benefit and, after 2 takeoffs at
McMinnville (MMV), I still had some PIO and resulting pucker. I think more
runs, both up and down a longer runway and crow hops might have allowed me
to "hop up" and let back down right away. That might have stabilized my
first takeoff.

2. About the PIO and center stick; I figured I could rest or at least
stabilize my arm by holding my elbow against the outside of my thigh. That
didn't work well when close to the ground. 10' - 30' vertical excursions
1000' off the ground aren't any deal at all. Close to the runway it's
another matter, right? "Luckily" for me, nobody was running a video camera
of my first attempts. I'm sure it would have been very enlightening but
probably a little concerning as well. At least it looked a little dicey from
inside the cockpit. So I've made a wooden box-type arm rest that I'll
install prior to another flight. Maybe everyone doesn't, but I guess I need
that help.

3. If you can have someone trusted fly alongside your first flights,
it was a comforting feeling knowing I had eyes outside the airplane. It's
nice to know there isn't oil leaking out, parts flapping around or whatever.
It's also quite nice to have someone on the ground when you do make your
first landing. I enjoy a good, honest critique especially when their efforts
help you realize you really did float the first 1500' of the runway and it
DID look like you were going pretty fast on short final. The airplane
wouldn't have dropped out of the sky and I put a little too much credibility
in the numbers shown on my Dynon & backed up by the "steam gauge." They
agreed and, according to the manometer, they didn't leak. That still doesn't
mean they are accurate.

4. MORE SLOW FLIGHT. My flight test plan, derived from Rick Junkin &
Zipper Goodman (where is Dave anyway?), said the first 2 flights are all
about getting confidence in the engine running and the controls moving the
airframe appropriately. Yes, the engine ran and runs just fine. The stick
and rudder make the airplane move in the right directions. Ok that's fine.
Flying slow is how we have safer landings. I know the first flights aren't
to set the record for how a stall series will be documented. Dang nabbit,
ENOUGH SLOW FLIGHT just didn't happen on my first 3 flights and as a result
I don't have the confidence to know how it performs when going slow,
especially when close to the ground (see #2 above!) I promise to myself to
figure that out on the next 3 flights.

5. I would loved to flown in a KR2 prior to my first flight (maybe
with somebody at a Gathering.) I'm 6'2' & 205# and just too big to get a
ride, I guess. Knowing what I know now, I would even have paid for a
commercial flight to visit the location of a willing KR-tutor. I thank my
neighbors, especially the 1.7 hours I got in Jerry VansGrunven's RV12,
N612RV. We pretended I couldn't see the instruments and he made me fly it by
how it felt. Now after 1.7 hours in N5391M I realize the RV12 doesn't feel
anything like the KR. That's ok; it still feels different than the 800-some
hours in my Cardinal and that was a big help.

That's enough rambling from me. I hope this might help somebody getting
ready for THEIR first flight. Cheers.

Congratulations John!

If your W is correct, the most likely culprit is going to be the incidence
of the horizontal stab. I had the same issue (except mine wanted to dive at
the ground). I flew for several years with some rather large trim wedges
glued to the trailing edge of the elevator to correct the stick pressures
and allow my trim tab to do it's job. That was eventually fixed when I
built the new tail and corrected the incidence.

If you look at the air to air photos of my KR from the 2002 Red Oak
Gathering, the photo of me rolling away from the photo plane (over half way
down the page) shows the wedges on the bottom of the elevator.

Congrats again.

KR> Stick imbalance

2014-11-09 Thread John Bouyea
Thank you to everyone for their replies and suggestions on fixing the stick
forces. I added a fixed tab as everyone described and I guess I got lucky.
It measures 5? wide by 1 ?? beyond the trailing edge. I bent it up about 30
degrees. Voila! That was enough help to the existing trim tab that so t now
operates effectively. Hard to believe as minor a modification could have
such a great impact on overall results. It?s ugly but very secure and now
?officially flight tested!? I?ll make a bunch of appearance improvements
after I get comfortable with its operation but for now I?m flying with a
working trim system. Gentlemen, Thank you.

Yes, about the same as Jeff reported. I glued a piece of bent aluminum,
guessing at the amount of bend needed. When I got it right, I riveted the
aluminum piece to the trailing edge of the elevator and
filled/sanded/painted and you can hardly tell it is there.

KR> "First" Flight Report

2014-11-09 Thread John Bouyea
Hi Tony.

Congrats on getting your KR into the air.

Thank you, I?m still quite excited about it! And sorry for the delay in
answering your query. I?ve been having too much fun flying since I got off the
ground. C177A, KR2, RV8A, and a RV9A all in the last 48 hours. YeeHaww Larry!

I'm interested that you're operating from a 2,000 ft grass strip.
Let me clarify that point.

Our strip OR81 (http://airnav.com/airport/OR81) hosts about 15 airplanes
ranging from RV?s (4, 6, 8 & 12) using about 1/3 of it to a Beech 36 who uses
about ? of it. Most of the pilots here have flown from here many years and it?s
what we just know and use. I actually land my Cardinal in less than factory
book numbers when I?m really on top of it. I can get down and stopped in under
600?. There?s not a lot of room for variance in speeds. There is something
about only having so much available and just making it work. It?s a whole
separate topic but ?Slow Flight? and being comfortable operating close to MCA
has a big impact on being successful. In the Cardinal, I have more fun going
slow than trying to go fast.

Did you have any concerns about your KR operating from your strip? Is it the
takeoff or the landing that uses the most real estate?

Yes. I?m afraid it?s going to be the landing part that is the issue here. My
first takeoff I was off the ground in about 800? no problem. That doesn?t leave
much/ any room for putting it back down if there is a problem but that?s a
given here. Friday, I launched from here and flew to MMV
(http://airnav.com/airport/MMV) for my first landings. Having a mile of runway
in front of me made that almost a non-event. My first landing at MMV I floated
above the runway almost 1500? according to Jerry VanGrunsven. That simply isn?t
going to work at home. My plan is to learn/ teach myself how to slow fly this
thing. I don?t know who said it but Dan Pritchard reminded me he read that 5
knots extra on landing could equate to 500? more landing distance. So to answer
your question, landing takes more than takeoff.

What are the characteristics of your KR (engine, weight, flaps, etc.) that
might affect takeoff and landing performance?
I?m learning to fly a KR2 ?kinda S? as it has an extra bay in the back but no
2? extension in front of the mail spar.
Revmaster 2100, Great Plains 4-into-1 exhaust header (and I DO think it makes a
difference)
About 630# and I want to reweigh it after the trim incident (separate message
coming on that)
Belly brake ala Heath/ Jones/ Langford variety (long overdue updates coming to
my KR web page soon)

Great big 5.00x5 main tires running at 20psi and Deihl nose gear without any
fairing yet

2014-11-07 Thread John Bouyea
During my entire flight today, I had to hold forward pressure on the stick.
This made my takeoff more exciting than it needed to be while I figured that
issue out. Landing became more an issue of reducing some forward pressure as
opposed to increasing back pressure. I'll head into published readings about
this imbalance and specifically how to cure it.

I'm pretty sure my weight and balance is correct and with pilot and fuel
loaded, I'm 3.5" aft of the forward-most CG. That leaves the trim tab
"neutral position" is set incorrectly or it's just too darn small. I'm
taking tools to MMV tomorrow to make what adjustments I can before further
flight.

KR> "First" Flight Report

2014-11-07 Thread John Bouyea
Well, it finally came together for me. N5391M made its second flight this
afternoon. I'm not counting the "other" first flight a few years ago because
the landing wasn't so good. Anyway after 2 PIO excursions on takeoff, I had
a pretty nice .9 hour ride from my 2000' grass strip OR81 to MMV, site of
the 2015 KR Gathering. I had to do a go-around on my first approach but the
second approach was reasonable and lead to a safe landing. I tucked it into
a hanger and caught a ride home with Jerry Van Grunsven in his RV8A, 1 of my
2 chase planes. I now really understand Flesner's YeeHaws! I belted out 2 of
those and it sure added to the fun.

Right now I want to digest a few things more fully before I post what I've
learned. Until then, I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone on the
list and especially, Mark Langford, Dan Heath and Oscar Zuniga for their
ongoing support for my efforts.

KR> Additional pilot now allowed on homebuilt first flights

2014-10-04 Thread John Bouyea
Eric,
Thanks for passing on notice of this AC
http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_90-116.pdf

 I read only part of it and stopped where it says;
" 8. DETERMINING AIRCRAFT ELIGIBILITY. Eligible aircraft must meet all of the
following requirements detailed below:
a. Experimental Certificate. Experimental certificate issued under ? 21.191(g),
Operating amateur-built aircraft, or ? 21.191(i)(2), Operating light-sport
aircraft.
b. Kit-Built Aircraft. Currently the FAA is limiting aircraft eligibility to
those aircraft built from a kit. These aircraft have the highest population and
consistency from aircraft to aircraft. Plans-built aircraft will not be
considered at this time."

The FAA kit list is here;
http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/ultralights/amateur_built/kits/media/amateur_built_kit_listing.pdf

So our "plans-built" KR's don't qualify. Bummer. My first flight ended in an
incident the inspector termed "hard contact with runway" Talking with Zipper,
another pilot aboard might have prevented this incident. Maybe the FAA & EAA
will extend the program to include plans-built aircraft in the future. I hope
so.

The plans built KR-2 is a notoriously aft CG airplane, which is why those of us
flying KRs have been beating the drum about CG for the last 15 years or so
since the inception of the KRNet. The other thing is that no 2 KRs are built
the same. There are a host of wings, tail feathers, engines, control
configurations and CGs that are used, so no two are going to fly exactly the
same.

So, I could spout on here about how I've spun my KR and the recovery is
nominal, but that is absolutely meaningless drivel unless your plane is built
with the same wing, same tail feathers and same CG as mine. To the best of my
knowledge, there aren't any other KRs in the same configuration as mine, so my
test data is of little use to any other KR pilot. In each case, we are test
pilots. That sounds cool to some people, but the fact is that test piloting
brings an element of risk with it, and should not be taken lightly.

The NTSB did not speculate on why the aircraft would not recover from the spin.
In my opinion, the original plans built KR lacked sufficient horizontal and
vertical stabilizers, rudder and elevator. But would still recover if the CG
was within reasonable range (which does not include all of the published CG
range). But if the CG is aft, recovery is unlikely.

Even though the NTSB cites the engine failure as partial cause, I doubt the
engine not running impeded recovery as I never add power until the aircraft is
already recovering. Going to full power in a spin is a great way to convert a
normal spin into a flat spin which makes life even more interesting. The video
recorder gives a host of information. The one thing that really stands out to
me is that the aircraft was stable at roughly 20? nose down and continued in
that attitude until impact. That just screams out AFT CG causing the spin to
go flat. In a flat spin, there is less air moving over the controls, so you
have even less control than a normal spin. The aircraft stayed stable at 20?
nose down regardless of control input says not enough air moving over the
controls to even affect the attitude and/or not enough controls to catch
sufficient air to affect the attitude. Add it all up. Small tail. Aft in the
CG range. Either can kill you. It seems quite likely he was fighting both.

As Larry said, I don't normally fly out of Moontown, but M38 instead, which
is 2600'. I can't verify landing speeds at the low end yet, as I have not
done a four-way GPS calibration that close to stall speed. Landing speed is
likely in the low- to mid- fifties though, considering the weight and wing
area. "Half the runway" might have been misleading, as I dropped it right
on the end of the runway with a headwind.

The patterns I do are pretty tight "military" patterns, with a 180 degree
semi-circle on both ends rather than the more standard squared-off affair
that I was taught. I just seems smarter to do a gradual turn than to do two
sharp turns at low speed like that...

KR> another 2.5 hours and ten more landings

2014-06-21 Thread John Bouyea
Hi Larry, Thanks for your correction to Mark's field.

The KR is 603# with a Revmaster 2180. I have a prop from Tommy W that is
giving me about 3150 static on the ground. No deployable drag now and I've
thought about that for a while. I've never landed it here but the takeoff
used about 1000' and was fine (landed at a much longer field.) Still think
this is "do-able" for my field?

In my C177A Cardinal I use about 1000 for takeoff & 600-800 for landings.
Thanks again.

I thing Mark flies out of M38 (Hazel Green) which is 2600 hard surface. He
did once fly out of Moon Town but that was long ago.

If you are looking to fly out of 2000 foot turf you'll definitely want some
type of deployable drag, i.e., speed brake or effective flaps. What do you
expect the empty weight of your KR to be and what engine are you using?
Nice looking residential air park where you live. 2000 feet, no
obstructions, near sea level, should be a piece of cake.

I looked up Moontown; http://www.airnav.com/airport/3M5 2160x160 turf and
you're using 1/2 of it? Nice! It seems you're landing right on the numbers
of what Rand advertised with their spec sheets "back in the day." That's one
of the things that got me interested in the KR in the first place.

I've been thwarted three days in a row in my attempts to fly N891JF, after a
two week hiatus due to a rare vacation. But at least I did manage to get
the wheel pants back on it yesterday. Today it was quite sorted out and
ready to run when I arrived at the airport, despite the 94F temp and reports
of "thunderstorms and lightning in the area" on the AWOS. I figured the
storms would be done by sunset, so off I went. I managed to get over 2.5
hours and another 10 full stop landings in, and I really got a handle on how
to control it with the tailwheel down (finally!). I practiced on a nearby
runway that's twice as wide and twice as long as mine, but I only used the
left half and the first half of it. That yielded a lot of confidence, and a
pretty decent landing back at my airport's short narrow strip. I even
practiced some botched landings where I slipped it in the lose a lot of
altitude in a hurry, and even some "re-lands", and never used half the
runway at KFYM. My landing back home barely used half the runway, so I feel
a lot better now.

I also did some wide open runs, stalls, all that stuff, and it appears as
though I have a solid 170 mph airplane now, although I think there's at
least another 5 mph hiding in the cowling and some other details. The
engine runs great at 3250 rpm wide open, so after some calm-air testing, I
will swap some props around to see what else I can get out of it. The funny
thing about this installation is that the engine cools best at almost
wide-open-throttle! After the engine is broken in, I'll do some plenums
like N56ML has for a real-world comparison, although I already know that
it'll run cooler that way. I'm ready for OSH now!

Life is good again...

today someone offered to swop me for this engine, log books up to date,
complete & in a good running condition. This sounds like a very good deal to

Keep well all,

John, I took a look at your engine pictures which look good. I noticed you
have a major firewall problem. You have to have stainless in front of the
wood. An engine fire would get you faster than you would think and even the
heat from the engine could be enough to light it off. The plans call for
.040 asbestos and .005 stainless. You are spending a lot of money and have a
nice looking airplane, be safe.

After a thorough inspection I have concluded that the worst damage that was
caused to the Black Bird is me cutting open the wing to inspect the spar and
gear leg on the passenger side. I am certain that there is no damage to the
spar, but would have to remove the gear leg to be absolutely sure that it is
not cracked. My conclusion is that if it were cracked, it could not hold up
a 750# aircraft. The hole in the wing will be repaired this week and I will
be back in the air as soon as the Skyview is installed.

The Dynon Skyview and modules are in the works but I don't have a ship or
delivery date yet. I am planning the panel and will soon remove the one in
the Black Bird so I can be ready to install the new stuff when it arrives.
As soon as I finish this latest upgrade to the Black Bird, all the units
that have been removed and not sold by then, will go on Barnstormers and
EBay.

was shoehorned into his garage next to his wife's Alfa Romeo. His son was

to what was on the P51 he drove in the military. Roy told me they expected
the stall speed to increase quite a bit. He wasn't too concerned about it; a
sure sign of his confidence in his piloting skills. I recall his workmanship

I took several rolls of film that day; I have the paper photos around here

Hey Dan,
What did you change in the cockpit or under the cowl that brought about so
much heat? I doubt "Ol' Blue" got all those hours with such a problem. Hot
pedals are going to be the least of your worries if the master cylinders
overheat. Please run down and fix the cause before further flight!

KR> ELT in restored kr-2

2008-12-15 Thread John Bouyea
John,

Your situation sounds similar to mine.

The HIO FSDO showed me the Temporary Airworthiness Certificate expired 12
months after initial issue. You might check the original Operating
Limitations letter.

The FSDO also told me the extent of the Major Modifications would require at
the very least a re-inspection, essentially a new airworthiness. I hoped to
complete the prior owner's 22 hours permitting to gain full privileges after
18 hours of additional flight-testing. No dice.

As to the ELT, if you do not own one, you can go with either type now or at
the end of the test period. The 121.5 is less expensive but the 406 is
supposed to give a more localized search area. Is that what you want?

Re: KR> ELT in restored kr-2

Hi,

My kr-2 got it's airworthiness cert, and operating limitations back in the
1980's.

Now with a new motor, canopy, foredeck and cowl, I am sure they will want me
to fly off 40 hours in addition to the 22 already logged.

What about the ELT? It has none now. No mention of one in the logs. What do
I have to do? Old style, new style, exempt via operating limitations, then
get one later? what?

thanks

KR> VFR operations ionto IMC

2008-10-12 Thread John Bouyea
Note: this is not KR specific

I recognize the writer is offering guidance on what worked for him. My
next-door neighbor (2000TT, IFR rated flying a C185 with a full panel of
gyros and radios) died when he let down through an overcast and ran into a
mountain. Unanticipated funerals suck. His wife misses him. So do I.

My thoughts about this topic;
1. Do some research and determine for yourself how many VFR rated pilots die
after entering the clouds. The numbers are sobering.
2. You have the opportunity (right now) to get some instruction BEFORE you
operate above a solid cloud deck. Ask the instructor to put you under the
hood and try what you are reading about attempting a letdown without visual
reference to the ground. This will give you an idea of the level of
difficulty you are considering.

3. I too have received assistance from ATC finding a place to escape from a
solidifying layer under me. They will help you as much as possible; nobody
wants you to become an unsuccessful statistic. Be prepared to receive a
letter from the FAA after the event. Talk to an aviation law specialist
before responding. Don't ask me how I know.

4. The only other pilots that are operating in the clouds have training and
a rating to be there. They and ATC do not expect you to be there. IF you
go there, talk to ATC first so they can help you and be sure you don't run
into someone else.

Fly safe folks.

KR> VFR operations ionto IMC

2008-10-12 Thread John Bouyea
Dana,

Sorry, I didn't intend to flame your comments. I understand you are
offering a technique that works for you. I know you ARE instrument trained,
rated, and experienced. Some (maybe even most) of the people reading this
mail list do not have your level of training and experience. My concern is
that VFR pilots might go away from our discussions with the idea they have a
trick in their bag to let them escape from poor planning. (I do flight
planning as an occupation and have spoken to literally one hundred pilots
who don't do any pre-flight planning.)

Randy Powell's comments (referenced below) about getting training echo my
exact recommendation. That is my whole point and the only point.

Your point about running out of gas is the ultimate truth; no matter the
endurance, we all have to come down eventually.

My best regards,

John Bouyea

OK, forget it, didn't mean to mention it. Doesn't work for me, won't work

All pilots should for their own safety, acquire a few hours of instrument

training, at least enough to feel confident in controlling the aircraft in

basic maneuvers in clouds. I do not have, nor plan to go after an

instrument ticket, but the small amount of money I paid for this peace of

mind has already saved my hide once when I did something dumb. Sooner or

later you will get your money's worth. My flight instructor would not

KR> Aileron trailing edge question

2008-10-12 Thread John Bouyea
I have a question about the thickness of the tailing edge section. This
photo of Richard Shirley's trailing edge shows a blunt profile.
http://www.bouyea.net/gathering2004/P1002293.jpg

The Cirrus people told me this is done to improve the feel at higher rates
of speed. (Interestingly, both Cirrus and Richard have aluminum ailerons.)
Most of the KRs I have seen have very thin (i.e. sharp) trailing edge
sections.

Does anyone know definitively about what this type of change might do to the
standard RAF airfoil?

Hi Robert.

I would echo Brian's opinion. The Grove gear would make a simpler
installation. The Deihl mains move the wheels further apart (more stable)
but require cutting into the stub wings, rerouting aileron cables, and
fiberglass work not required if installing Grove gear.

HALLMARKS OF HOMEBUILDING -

KEN RAND'S COMPOSITE AIRPLANE, THE KR-1

Among the most talked about airplanes at the 1972 Oshkosh EAA Convention and
Fly-In was the Rand Robinson KR-1 created by Ken Rand of EAA Chapter 92 in
Huntington Beach, California. Not so much the airplane, which was so small
that some EAAers figured it had to be either a large RC model or some
over-indulgent father's taxiing toy for his child. What made the airplane
special-and what now accords it "Hallmark" status-is how it was put together
and what it was made out of.

KR> GPS Software

2008-10-12 Thread John Bouyea
Net-heads,

I do not make pitches for our company's software (unless I'm working the
phones or at the trade show booth.) However, it is Friday (!) and this
topic has appeared a least twice over the last few months. Disclaimer: I
work for FlightPrep. We create ChartCase EFB software.

I am glad to see this topic as many of us are building or flying
cross-country airplanes. Long trips make the requirement for easy access to
information much more important.

Look at http://www.flightprep.com <http://www.flightprep.com/> to see our
products, particularly ChartCase Professional
<http://www.flightprep.com/rootpage.php?page=HomeEFBSW> software and
turn-key <http://www.flightprep.com/rootpage.php?page=HomeEFB> hardware &
software solutions.

We sell a lot of software and hardware & software systems to GA users flying
everything from experimental aircraft up through light/ medium business
jets. The military and the FAA also are on our subscriber list. I
personally develop, test, and use FlightPrep ChartCase EFB software in my
Cardinal <http://www.bouyea.net/bouyea/30502/index.htm> .

Notes:

* Our systems require Windows XP. It will not run on a PDA.

* Our moving map software starts around $265 and includes VFR, IFR, approach
plates and full flight planning capability.

* ChartCase Pro may be more than some pilots flying KRs around the patch
need.

* I will be flying ChartCase on a tablet computer in my KR.

* KRNet is not the place for software sales and/ or support!

* I am glad to handle product-specific questions, but PLEASE address them
to: sa...@flightprep.com
