Re: KRnet> High impedance short - lessons learned
Luis; I had a similar problem on a Focker S11 ... the owner put in a USB power source plug with an LED that seems to have shorted. Result... not enough power to turn the prop. Took it off, powered the starter up with no problem. To the problem: As I taxi my airplane I noticed a rapid battery voltage drain from a normal 12.5V to a no go condition of 11 - 10.5v. I would taxi back , recharge the battery, do a battery drain and charging system test and find no faults. I then decided that I may have too small a wire feeding my main buss. I changed all feed wires from 20 ga. to 14ga with the main being 12ga. I fired it up and no improvement. My last desperate act was to disconnect every wire from the buss and reconnect one at a time to see the effect. The last wire I reconnected was my avionics switch and bingo, it arced and I got the voltage drain This switch has a built in LED which may have shorted and caused a high impedance drain without tripping its breaker. I replaced all switches to regular toggle switches and everything is back to normal. I can now return to my flight testing and planning for the meet. Luis R Claudio N8981S Dallas, Tx. I intend to simply flip the mounts to the back of the forward spar, and mount the nose gear... then install hydraulic brakes while I'm in there. If the plane tilts backward with me in it.. From the "new airfoil" website at http://www.krnet.org/as504x/templates.html The AS5046 profile is a best fit for stock KR2S spars. If your spars are already built, you would want to use the AS5046 airfoil. It uses a stock aft spar and a slightly taller main spar, which could be heightened by laminating an extra .125" thick strip of spruce to the spar cap. The aft spar would also need to be moved up about an inch with relation to the fuselage due to differences in the RAF48 wing shape and the lower incidence that is optimal for the wing. Each airplane varies, and correct incidence will only be achieved using the level lines on the templates, rather than measuring up from the longerons. Several people have cut their aft spars out and raised them, and I'm told it's about a 3 hour job. Adding an eighth of an inch of leftover spruce spar material to the top of the main spar is not a show stopper, by any means... Re: KR> Propellers
MIke I sold Sam Bailey's KR-1 (N31SB) after installing a new canopy. The canopy it came with had been scratched or cracked in the front and then taken off and installed rear end first creating a slope that did not let one reach forward to items like the fuel valve. I was a novice and hadn't met any KR guys yet and hence I bought it not realizing that I was too heavy to safely fly it. I put it up for sale for $4K or $5K at the Chino Fly In a few years ago but regrettably no one bought it. It carries 26 useable gallons of gas. It was widened slightly more than 2 inches. It is tricycle gear. I would have loved to have flown it. It now sits in a hangar at Torrance airport next to a few porches and other specialty cars. I don't think it's flown... If anyone is interested, I"ll try to contact the owner for you. Marc BacaEast Los Angeles(323) 426-1462 On Saturday, October 24, 2020, 08:56:37 PM PDT, Mike Stirewalt via KRnet wrote: Jeff said, > "If the current owner ever sends that prop back to Prince for repair, he might want to have Prince add a bit of pitch into the prop." I had the 52 x 52 Sterba that came with my plane sitting in the hangar unused once I'd bought a Prince, then later on another Sterba (52 x 56). The 52 x 52 had a lot of miles and years on it. The urethane leading edges were slightly worn and overall I thought it could do with a refurb job. When I sent it to Ed I asked him to put some pitch in it if possible. When I got it back (a job he did for free, BTW), I found no difference in performance with it even though he said he had tried to add pitch. Apparently it's easier to take pitch out than to put it in. It may not be all that easy to take pitch out however, hence the prop maker cutting two inches off of the prop Jeff had sent in for re-pitching. I wonder Jeff, did that prop maker ask you about cutting the length before he did it? If not, which prop maker did that? Without checking with you, cutting a prop like that would be really annoying. My Prince went to Edmonton, Alberta to go on a KR originally built in Nova Scotia. We may see it at a Gathering someday. Mainly I wanted to say that putting pitch into an already existing prop is pretty problematic/difficult. Sterba said he tried to do it with the 52 x 52 but there was no difference in performance. That prop ended up going back to the person who had originally bought it from Ed in 1987, Ken Cottle, the builder of my N335KC. Originally it was a 54 x 52 but Ken cut an inch off each tip to get more RPM's so he could beat Jim Faughn. They built their planes around the same time and did a lot of flying together. After I sent this prop back to Ken, he used it on the Sam Bailey KR he had bought from Sam. Ken sold that plane and prop not long ago to a fellow in Minnesota. It left on a trailer and the new owner never flew it. The usual reasons I suppose, although as a plane with conventional gear there's really nothing tricky in flying these things. Anyway, he traded it to a fellow in Michigan in return for an ultralight or Light Sport . . . don't recall what Ken said just now. The fellow in Michigan is now selling it back to Ken for less money than what Ken sold it to the Minnesota guy for, so he's made a profit on it. The ultralight Ken is currently flying isn't very much fun compared to his KR so Ken is getting it back. What Ken has got is a "Chimp" - a knock-off of a Champ with a Rotax 582 (I think). It looks kinda cute but, of course, isn't an airplane. I wonder what the status is of the Sam Bailey KR that went to Marc Baca? We don't hear much from Marc lately, that I've noticed. Marc got that KR from Ryan here at Chapter 14 some years back. Ryan had driven to Kansas to pick it up from Sam. A third Sam Baily KR-1 is in a museum somewhere around Pratt, KS where Sam lives. Sam went to a Grumman I think, or maybe a Cherokee. I saw him take off for Denver when I stopped in Pratt for fuel the last time I went to Mt. Vernon. One would think he would have stopped to look at my KR and say hi but apparently he was in a hurry. He had his wife with him and they had an appointment in Denver (the FBO guy said) . . . so I didn't get to meet him. Re: KR> Insurance
I just skimmed it ... but the way I read the law in MN is that you must have minimum liability insurance only IF you are operating the aircraft or causing it to be operated. (Those buggers have actually made it a crime - not a civil matter). With regard to the hangar lease it appears that the lessor is acting more conservatively than the law of MN. Re: KR> Automotive Spark Plugs
Luis Claudio; I purchased the same heads for my 2080 cc engine. I believe that I have the D2000 mag that I intend to install. I called Joe H. at Revmaster and he indicated that he could convert the leads to automotive ends. I have to mail the magneto cap to him. I do not know which adapters you are referring to (Great Plains?) but if you go that route you may have difficult with the secondary plug on the bottom side of the head as the space there is very limited. In my last set up I had to shorten the spark plug boots by taking an exacto knife to the rubber boots an shortening them by 1/2 inch. KR> 3rd Class Medical Reform
FAA Adopts Third-Class Medical Reform Rule New FAR Part 68, known as BasicMed, goes into effect on May 1, 2017.By Rob Mark 3 hours agoPilots operating under Part 91 who have held an FAA medical certificate within the past 10 years will soon have an alternative, voluntary means to certify they are healthy enough to fly, the agency announced today. The FAA said it supports the new rule called BasicMed because it “will simplify our regulations and keep general aviation flying affordable.” BasicMed, written into a new Part 68 of the FARs that takes effect May 1, 2017, means pilots will be able to fly certain aircraft without holding a medical certificate, providing they comply with a number of FAA provisions. The BasicMed rule requires pilots opting to use the no-medical-certificate route possess a valid driver’s license and have completed a medical education course within the previous 24 months. The rule also restricts pilots to operating airplanes carrying no more than six people and weighing no more than 6,000 pounds — rotorcraft and turbine-powered are included — but below 18,000 feet and not faster than 250 kias. Both VFR and IFR day/night operations are permitted under the new rules. Under BasicMed, pilots will still be required to undergo a medical examination every four years, although the doctor necessary to conduct the exam need not be an FAA medical examiner. The agency is referring pilots to the AOPA website for the required aeromedical course and has no plans to develop a separate course of its own. You don't need to be an AOPA member to take the free course. To be eligible for BasicMed, you must have held a valid FAA medical certificate, including a special issuance medical, within the previous 10 years. If you have not held a medical in the last 10 years or have never held a medical, you'll need to visit an AME once to obtain a third-class medical certificate, after which you become eligible for BasicMed.While the FAA is amending Parts 61 and 91 to reflect the changes, the new rule will not apply to pilots flying for compensation or hire. Flight instructors are eligible for BasicMed and can fly without a third-class medical under the new rules.FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said, “We think we’re providing an alternative path to the traditional medical certificate.” This new alternative will “help the airman meet the appropriate level of safety. You can only use BasicMed if you previously held a medical.” ___ Search the KRnet Archives at http://tugantek.com/archmailv2-kr/search. KR> The Dig ... and the Response
"He's in NorCal dumb ass. Thanks for the dig. Steve Glover" Sent from my electronic leash. ?On Aug 10, 2016, at 11:35, Paul Visk via KRnet wrote: ? It must be a southern California thing. : ) ? Paul Visk Belleville IL? 618 406 4705 ... Given the crafty exchange I'm compelled to provide some context and possibly interpret this subtle interchange of words. I may not be able to tell you the various tinsel strengths of any given brand of resin due to the covalent bonding at different temperatures or the various coefficients of lift for the various (very creative) wing tips used on many of the KR aircraft (actually I can if given some time and data) ... but I can tell you something about the "California thing." ? Many of you know that California has some of the harshest anti small business policy in the nation burdening them with high taxes, land costs, environmental costs, metropolis costs, targeted enforcement etc..etc..?? The result is higher production and material costs.. which in this group results in the notion that parts are "expensive" and that the seller is an oger. It sounds like the "California thing" comment appears to be directed at NVAero which deals solely in market of? KR parts and plan in So. Cal. There appears to be a misconception aimed at "choking" and maligning the ONLY full featured part time KR parts resource there is.? This is ironic given that most of the KR folks I've met appear to have a desire for this community to thrive. Maligning NVAero seems contrary to our interests.? I can tell you from my experience that kit or scratch building seemed ominous and unreachable just a few years ago. For someone generating the intestinal fortitude and shelling out the money to buy prefabricated parts knowing that he/she is likely to abandon the KR building effort before finishing creates a barrier for the KR community as a whole. Steve Glover ... and I can say this because I've watched him agonize over the the last 5 years or so ... has spent an estimated $75K to $100K of his own money to perpetuate the KR kit and plans industry. Although he has many innovations to make the KR better, he refrains from making the KR more difficult to build.? Steve has not shown any intentions to make profit, his primary interest? being that the business would simply support the cost of operations. KR? part sales fall way short of sustaining business operations.? Even with volunteers, he literally does not make enough to break even, thus causing him to spend his own time and money to keep the option? to buy a kit open for would be novice builders.?? In short, he spends hours of his own time directing gratuitous labor (some of that my own volunteer time) away from his real businesses that could make profit.?? He is there every weekend and often late at night during the week. So those of you who have a poor image of "California things" consider this:? Although there is a cost to the buyer,? KR parts and plans are a profitless venture, when you consider high hangar costs, storage of molds, high composite costs, high sourced out manufacturing costs etc etc. at minimum this is true in? California.? There is not enough demand to even recover the costs in volume sales because relatively speaking, few people are buying KR's kits. ? For the sales that do occur at NVAero, Steve Glover spend his own time manufacturing those parts to high quality specifications. As a volunteer with the intent on learn and build better aircraft I have botched up a few parts regrettably at Steve's expense.? (I did however get the funny look from him). And while it may be true that NVAero has had some delays, they are inherent to the need to tend to money making ventures so that the KR Kit and parts option continues to be available.?? There... I said it I hope this helps some of you understand the "California thing" from a California person. Marc BacaEast Los Angeles, CA

KR> KR Gathering
I typically maintain a low profile on the net and simply listen and learn but today I'm compelled to talk about something I know a little about. Throughout the last couple of years i've seen a few individuals lob some subtle and often less than subtle suggestions that Steve Glover has indulged in some impropriety.?? One such comment is the folowing.. "Hopefully there will be a full accounting to close those Gathering books" I'm hoping that comments like these are simply an abrupt choice of words and that they does not translate into? Steve Glover (who organized the 2014 Gathering) having to deal with yet another layer of popular misunderstandings. I'm almost positive that Steve Glover will NOT give a "FULL" accounting of the expenses for last year's gathering.? I'm sure that he won't bother anyone by commenting about the the numerous days he took off to get the 2014 KR Gathering locked in, the amount of $$ he spent out of pocket for the guys he had to pay to clean and arranged a production hangar for the worshops.? and out of sheer consideration for attendees the constructions and installation of a new toilet (for older folk) and sinks, the siding so that the hangar would look presentable and functional? for people, the renting and purchase of amenities like the Public Address system, chairs and tables, the loss he took purchasing items to make sure the workshops were useful to people, the gasoline from driving around to get things done. ?? Because the 2014 gathering appeared seemless, one might not know the amount of time and effort it took to deal? with the administration at the airport, discussions with insurance companies, the coordination of the cadre of volunteers and contributors that he had to convince.? I'm certain there's alot more that? did that does not come to mind at the moment. I often see a posts that suggest that he is running a KR business that is non responsive and have even seen the suggestion of fiduciary impropriety.?? Many people don't know that he has invested several thousands of dollars into a business (perhaps $75K or more) that keeps premade KR Parts available at a significant loss to him personally year after year. I can see Steve's frustration building year after year as some of these posts add insult to the financial injury. For those of you who have been swayed with a question about his character, I've seen Steve almost every weekend for the last 4 years during which time he's taught me to build aircraft. In the 4 years I've known him, I have not witnessed even ONE incidence where Steve has indulged in any monetary discrepancies. People never find out about the finicky buyers that cost him fees after rescinding their orders due to the unfounded comments and ideas transmitted through emails and such. Moreover, the last couple of years I've witnessed people's expressed anxieties about plans and parts on the KRnet. Most of the time the delays were caused by things that were not under his control. I wont bore anyone with details but consider this? Steve Glover has made a great contribution to the KR Community 75% of the time at his own expense as there is? little financial gain in the KR parts business and almost all of the time there is negative financial gain.? Every month, year after year, despite the cyber wallops lobbed at him, he keeps the availability of pre made parts, kits and innovations for the KR coming.? Once again, I'm not interested in stirring up? a discussion about this... My comment is for the purpose of precluding a discussion about people's anxieties? as I personally witness the weekly operations at the NVaero Hangar.? I also want to tip my hat to those individuals who assemble these gatherings? as I've witnessed that it is a Herculean effort.? KR> Nvaero
Hello KR Netters; I feel compelled to step in here to give KR Netters some insight into the Herculean efforts consistently endeavored upon by Steve Glover of NVAero over the last few months Aside from his arduous labor intensive company and primary business that he owns and runs, he operates NVAero as a service to the KR Community. I say "service to the KR community" because given the efforts to fulfill orders, overhead and cost of materials, there is little or no profit in it. I (volunteer) assist him on a part time basis in exchange for him imparting onto me the skills necessary to build safe aircraft. I get to witness the trials and tribulations of getting orders filled for buyers. As if running one and a half businesses, providing technical support to builders and running around gathering materials/tools for kit/part orders and building the parts was not enough, he/we took on the task of preparing for and hosting the 2014 KR Gathering. mostly because of his/our enthusiam for KR's. Steve has overcome quite a few obstacles in preparation for the gathering and has done so in an effort to make this gathering successful, memorable and comfortable for all of us. He has planned and coordinated the workshops that required extensive amounts of time, effort and material gathering to increase KR builder's skill level. He battled with the airport administration for the camp ground, he coordinated the awards and the site for the banquet, he sampled caterers, we have worked on available KR aircraft to prepare tem for the formation flight around So. Cal. etc etc.. Based on the intensity and amount of work he has gone through over the last few months, Steve has been quite modest ... and as such he hasn't complained even once about leaving his regular jobs at the end of the work day to tend to Hangar and Gathering demands til 11:00 pm almost every day for the last few months. Im proposing that we cut him a break and perhaps offer to lend a hand... If you've placed an order please consider just having a little more patience for the moment. If you are not planning to come to the gathering, please re-consider & make an effort to attend. This KR Gathering is expected to be memorable and we would be elated to have you here. At the few gatherings I've been to I've experienced a strong sense of comradery and enthusiasm as well as a very important sharing of information about building. If you can fly in or drag a KR to show or sell, that would be better. I use Kayak.com for good deals on airline tickets. Marc Baca Chino, CA From: Sid Wood To: krnet at list.krnet.org Sent: Sat, March 23, 2013 7:30:01 PM Subject: KR> First Flight Made the first flight with N6242 this morning. That's 26+ years of steady building, modifying, sanding, painting, fixing and tweaking coming together for 10 minutes of flight with 2 laps around the patch. Winds were supposed to be calm as reported by AWOS; not true at any altitude above 20 feet. My pitch trim was set for neutral, but soon as flying speed was reached, got immediate pitch up, which of course, I immediately over corrected. Nearly lost it, but managed to keep going while holding lots of forward stick. Started to encounter more gusts a few hundred feet up with more PIO. By 1500 feet was getting better control, but still gusty. Still had full down trim and holding lots of forward stick. At 2000 feet oil temp spiked at 240 degrees F and oil pressure was dropping off. Reduced throttle to idle to glide to an airport landing. Was to high and fast over the threshold. The low morning sun washed out everything on the Dynon during final approach. I did not know if the engine had enough oil for a go around, so pressed for a landing on the 4200' runway. Estimate the first touch was about 80 knots half way down the runway with more PIO. The third bounce bent the nose strut and trashed the wheel pant. Got to taxi speed with about 100 feet of runway to spare. Taxi back to the hangar was uneventful except for the fear induced adrenaline shakes. Inspection at the hangar revealed the nose strut bent at the curve up from the pivot. The wheel pant had asphalt scratches indicating a classic wheelbarrow touchdown and had been destroyed. Engine oil was at the full mark on the dip stick. Heat in the cabin during flight indicated inadequate airflow through the oil cooler; excessive air duct length may be the problem. The elevator trim tab would not extend beyond the neutral point using the cockpit control. The Nyrod shaft on the trim tab seems to be jammed to keep the elevator in the full up position. My right triceps still aches from holding forward stick so hard for so long. Troubleshooting is still ongoing to fix the elevator trim. Will also need a new nose strut and maybe a new oil cooler. My intent with persisting with the climb was to get enough experience with the controls to calm down the PIO for landing. Engine oil over heat preempted that training. For years, pilots have had to fight the weather, sometimes getting weathered in on the way to the Gathering or going back home. Often, this means having to stay extra nights in hotels and paying hangar fees to keep their prize possession out of the weather. Sometimes it even means losing your KR and sustaining moderate to severe injury. I have brought this subject up many times after Gatherings that were plagued with bad weather. I checked with one of our most respected meteorologists to see if there was a time of the year when the country had the greatest chance for good weather across the country. He said October. We continue to have the Gathering in September, one of the worst times of year for expecting good weather. I am submitting again, that we consider changing the time of the gathering to the middle of that month. I am suggesting October 18th and 19th for next year's Gathering in hopes that we can get more planes safely to and from the event. I don't know any KR pilots and KR planes that are IFR rated, so if you want planes at the Gathering you must have decent weather across the widest area of the country as possible. So if you want planes at the Gathering, I strongly suggest you try to do something different as doing the same does not seem to be working to the betterment of getting KRs to the event. KR> Magneto Off Sync
Hello Everyone; Any advice or commentary is appreciated. I recently upgraded by Revmaster 1835 to a 2100cc on my KR-2. Once the engine was reinstalled I took the magneto off for inspection. Once off I notice that my bendix S4LN magneto was firing oddly. When the impulse coupling snapped it would fire on 2 and 3 leads. I took it apart and found carbon trails on the gear . I purchased the necessary parts (block distrib. and gear distrib.) and put it back together and now when the impulse coupling snaps it fires on only one lead. However .. when I reinstalled the magneto onto the revmaster accessory case and put cylinder #1 at Top Dead Center (TDC) the impulse coupling snaps and magneto fires approximately 65 degrees after TDC (as I turn the prop). This leads me to believe that I either mis aligned the gears in the magneto... or revmaster during the rebuild installed the magneto coupling on the back of the crank 60 degrees off (ahead). This coupling in the back of the crank has 6 bolts (12 pt.) which if taken off and moved one bolt hole forward (left) ... I assume would allow me to advance 60 degrees (360* / 6 bolt holes =60*) which I could then correct to 65 degrees by adjusting (turning) the magneto. Unlike the slick magnetos which I believe could be rotated, the bendix magnetos have affixed mounting brackets which forces you to mount the magneto in approximately the same way that you took it out. My question: how do I get the magneto to fire at TDC? Any thoughts or experience on this ? Best regards, Marc Baca East L.A.
KR> KR crash
Hello Flyers; After meeting many of you at the 2011 KR Gathering it became quite evident that we as a group are profoundly different than ordinary pilots and aviation enthusiasts. We strive for the satisfaction of building our own aircraft, we have the intestinal fortitude to fly them, we work diligently to move beyond just mastering our craft in order to thrive in the fringes of aviation. I wont speculate what happened with this incident but one of the things that we can do to promote KR safety is form regional support groups that assist in building, sharing technical resources, participate in KR Activities (fly outs, demonstrations, worshops etc) and actively promote the development of KR aircraft and sound building practices. The KR site is fantastic for providing information but hands on activities would be just as valuable. I've always thought that Southern California should have one of these builder/flyer groups. I know that there are a few flying KR-2's in this area but I have not seen any organized KR events here in So. Cal. There may also be a few KR's in people's garages that could be brought back out into the light and made airworthy. If anyone local is interested in building or finishing their KR in the area east of Los Angeles perhaps we can contribute toward renting a large hangar in Chino, CA (30 mi east of Los Angeles where NVaero is located) and re-invigorate sound KR building and flying in So. Cal that will hopefully spread throughout the rest of the country. Heck... I'd like to see a California KR Brigade of 7 -12 KR's flying to the 40th anniversary KR Gathering coming year. KR> Change in propeller size from 54" to 52"
Hello Everyone; I recently discovered a crack in my propeller at the end of the blade along the grain about an inch long. The current prop is a 54" X 48 pitch.I was considering purchasing another prop and the manufacturer has one available that is 52" X 48 pitch. My KR-2 has a Revmaster 1835cc VW engine. Aside from the clearance benefit, have any of you made such a change or know of the results of a smaller prop with the same pitch? Thanks, Marc Baca East L.A.
KR> Aircraft Tax Question
Hello KR Netters; Recently the Los Angeles County Tax Assessor's Office unilaterally and without documentary justification valued my KR-1 at $15,000 and have proceeded to tax me at that rate. I purchased this aircraft in marginal flying condition and paid substantially less than what they have valued the aircraft. As such ... I filed an appeal with the County of Los Angeles. In my attempts to obtain documentary evidence to demonstrate the reasonable market value of my KR-1 at the hearing, I have found that information regarding price and sales of KR-1's is scarce? In an effort to sort this matter out and pay a fair property tax , I'm appealing to those of you who own KR-1's to send me an email (off list) indicating what the approximate fair market value of your KR-1. Alternately it would be helpful for any of you to tell me what you think my KR-1 is worth (in the blind). It has a 2180 vw GP engine with 500 hours on it. Roughly 700 hours on airframe. (No Log Books) It has no electrical system. It's tricycle gear. The Exterior and the Canopy are a 7 out of 10. It has no transponder and the Radio is a Handheld. Any assistance on this will be greatly appreciated. Marc Baca East Los Angeles, CA mbf...@yahoo.com 1N31SB http://www.greatplainsas.com/vwsbailey.html

It was a good thing I had a good anti-virus system in place. Did anyone on the KR list get it too, and if so has anyone investigated the root of the viruses and who sent them? KR> KR-1 Plans - Plus Stuff (LONG)

Marc Baca mbf...@yahoo.com From: Plane Nut To: KRnet Sent: Tue, October 19, 2010 8:12:06 PM Subject: RE: KR> KR-1 Plans - Plus Stuff (LONG) Netter's, As most of you know, we took over operations from RR this past year. So one can imagine there has been some growing pains while attempting to get things moving again. Between a blown out knee, moving in and out of hangars for due to potential flooding, and now with moving into a larger facility in attempt to streamline and be more productive, this has been a HUGE undertaking. We are working diligently to get the remaining orders out that we have and anticipate having everything caught up by the end of the year or shortly after depending on temperatures for the glass work. (Thank you for your patience to those we have outstanding orders with) Currently there is myself, and my partner Eric primarily doing EVERYTHING for production! We do not have enough revenue to hire employees as there still is not enough volume as we attempt to reenergize the KR design in the homebuilt community. This IS NOT our primary method for making a living. Eric is still on active duty with the US Navy and lives a couple hours away. He is instrumental in taking care of all website and administrative duties for nV Aero. He travels to the hangar to help with production, etc. when his time permits based upon his current Op Temp. Otherwise, production is basically me. I do the ordering, stocking, fabricating and any other gopher jobs required. We have some items contracted out such as welding, precision machining, etc. Eric and I have a desire to provide quality, affordable parts and materials for people to build their KR aircraft. We certainly didn't get into this to get rich. The first thing to understand is nV Aero does not own the rights to the plans for any of the KR aircraft. Jeanette has a price that she sells the plans to us. Based upon that price we charge enough to cover our shipping and administrative costs (picking up plans from RR which is 40 miles away, and other expenses associated with packaging and shipping.) Due to printing costs Jeanette has raised the price of the KR-1 plans to us. The drawings and additional copies she provides are at current market rates from the printers. The book is the same as everyone else has received for the past several years but those are rapidly running out so I anticipate another increase once the current inventory is depleted. This brings me to Mr. Caudle's post. I do feel he should have contacted me first before posting to the net with his "displeasure". I think I addressed it fairly well above but let me be clear, WE buy the plans for $95. We sell at $114.95. We found that is easier for flat rate shipping for our shopping cart system due to the various destinations in the US and abroad. So, $25 for "shipping" less up to 6% for credit card processing if a Corporate card is used. This leaves us $108.05. Subtract $5.70 for Priority Mail with delivery confirmation leaves $102.35 less $95 for RR leaves us $7.35 for our time to pick up plans from RR, print packing lists (The packing list was with Mr. Caudle's registration page), registration pages, package and get them to the post office or however we ship. Clearly we are making a TON of money for the hassle. I am a little displeased myself with Mr. Caudle's post given our original correspondence. Nothing was misleading when he inquired about the plans and their quality. I guess I should have been VERY specific as to the additional pages showing the new dimensions from the KR-2 changes with drawings instead of photos. You can see my email to him below. BEGIN MSG. "Dear Mr. Caudle, Thank you for your inquiry into the KR-1. I have not seen the Corby Starlet plans so could not comment on how they compare however, there have been several hundred KR-1's build over the years. The KR-1 plans were drawn in the 70's and have a builders manual with approximately 64 pages. The full size drawings are for the airfoil only. Dimensionally the additional photos and measurements in the manual are pretty clear. One positive thing regarding the KR series is the builder support is outstanding. The KR-net has about 600 members and answers to most of your are readily available. Of course you can contact us as well. I will work on converting a copy of a page from the plans to send to you." END. Keep in mind these plans were written a very long time ago. To answer the various questions posted regarding the KR-1 plans. The pages that have been removed from the back of the manual were outdated and did not reflect current building recommendations. There

KR> KR Alternative Charging systeam
Hello folks; I own the Sam Bailey KR-1 here in the Los Angeles area. Some of you may have seen the picture on the GP website. http://www.greatplainsas.com/vwsbailey.html . It does not have a charging system and thus no transpornder or altitude encoder. Becuase of this I cannot operate it withing Class B airspace I intend to install a Stator and Rotor in the Diehl Accessory Case so that I can then install an altitude encoding transponder. I was wondering if the stator and rotor setup sold by GP provides sufficient power for VFR use and if any of you have created your own charging system. If you have, I would greatly appreciate any advice on what you have used. I have seen the higher power stators available from Harley aftermarket vendors that claim 32 - 40 amps. Have any of you used these? Are any of you aware of limitations on using these. Marc Baca mbf...@yahoo.com East Los Angeles

KR> Annual Inspection Checklist KR-1
Hello Folks, I'm new to KR aircraft. I purchased a completed KR-1 with tricycle landing gear and 2180. Does anyone have this checklist or can anyone tell me if it's available somewhere? Better yet is there anyone you know who can do my annual inspection in Southern California? Also .. does anyone have the "POH" for this aircraft. I want to start off doing high speed taxi tests.. then lift off in the ground effects and back down ... and gradually after 40 or so of these... do the pattern. In case anyone would like to show me their aircraft or provide some ground school (advice) I'm based out of El Monte Airport in Southern California. Thanks,... my email is mbf...@yahoo.com.
