I also built the AS5048 airfoil and had to devise a bellcrank system since the stock was too large to mount on the rear of the spar. What I did was to reverse engineer the bellcrank and I mounted it on the forward side of the rear spar. KR> Cleveland brake question
Joe, You can always build a trap door in the floor and use the Fred Flintstone braking system. Dang I crack myself up!!! But why stay on the runway? Remember when ATC at Oshkosh told me to exit into the grass and as soon as the mains left the asphalt they sank to the axle leaving my tail over the runway and they had to close the runway down till we got it out of the way. Experiences like that are always fun. KR> ADS-B
Hi Guys & Gals, I just returned from a nice long flight over central Wisconsin. No we have not left for Florida yet. The move date is July 14th as we had a slight delay. Anyway, what a beautiful flight and an absolutely gorgeous sunset. ADS-B is an awesome tool to have and now I will not fly without it. I have seen so much more traffic that otherwise I would not have seen it. This evening I was heading direct into the sun when traffic showed up on the screen. It was headed direct towards me and was only 1100 feet lower than I was flying at. As he neared his icon turned orange to warn me of danger. If he had gotten close enough it would have turned red as immediate danger but he was too far below me for that to happen. Just yesterday I was flying and two targets appeared at 500 feet above me and headed direct towards me. These two guys were flying parallel to each other at what I estimated to be about a mile or so apart. I flew right between them and I honestly doubt that I would have seen them without the ADS-B. I watched them on the screen as they continued on and they never split up. I bought my receiver from Open Flight Solutions for $250 and it is by far worth more than that. They are working on AHRS upgrade for this unit and also an out upgrade. By far one of the best $250 I invested in my plane. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Dunedin, FL flykr2s at gmail.com www.flykr2s.com

KR> Stock Rudder Pedals
-Original Message- From: Chris Prata what's the issue with stock KR tubular rudder pedals? The stock pedals are thin wall tubing. I can not remember the exact thickness. Some KR pilots have experienced failure in the corner welds from stress over a period of time. If one is excessively hard on the pedals when braking, taxiing, etc. then they could possibly be overstressed. I fly with a stock set and have 529.3 hours on them without any issues. I do inspect them regularly. If you are concerned then some simple weld braces will beef them up or take them to a fab shop and have some fabricated with a thicker wall tube. Hi Guys, There has been some talk lately about being able to source parts i.e. a Raspberry Pi 2 to build an ADS-B receiver. I recently ordered a complete ?FlightBox? kit from a new company called Open Flight Solutions. I received my dual frequency receiver a few days ago and am very impressed with the unit. Open Flight Solutions uses the Raspberry Pi 3 which has wifi built in unlike the 2 which requires an adapter. All of the components are of exceptional quality and the communication and customer service with Open Flight Solutions is awesome. Steve with open flight has contacted me twice since I received my box just to make sure all is ok. They are also working on an AHRS upgrade for this FlightBox. KR> What the heck was that?
Yesterday I went on a cross country flight around northern Wisconsin. I did not make any stops but was really enjoying the scenery from 3,500 msl which is roughly 2,500 agl in this area. I had been flying for about two hours nonstop as I was getting close to being back in the vicinity of my home airport KSTE. The main purpose of my flight was to do some comparison of three flight apps I have downloaded on my iPad. The apps are iFly GPS, Foreflight and FlyQ EFB. All three have great features. The smoothest moving map display bar none is the Foreflight display. It is smooth and does not jump. iFly moving map jumps the most and FlyQ EFB is very minimal to almost smooth. I have been flying iFly GPS for a couple of years and it is a great app. As a matter of fact all three but the FlyQ EFB by Seattle Avionics far surpasses all in features. If you have not looked at FlyQ EFB I suggest you do. Ok, so let?s get back to the subject matter which is ?What the heck was that?? The flight was as smooth as a baby?s butt and I was able to trim and do a lot of hands off while I played with the apps. Did I mention I had a Bald Eagle pass right in front of me! Man was that cool. When it did I banked quickly in the direction it was flying and tried to find it but no luck. No that was not the ?What the heck was that?? I was about ten miles out and was getting ready to call in my approach to landing when all of a sudden ?BAM? my head hits the canopy and I hear this loud bang. The plane jumped around like I just flew through wake turbulence from a fighter jet. I looked all around and never saw another plane. My first thought was what the heck was that? To have been flying such a pristine smooth flight to have this happen on approach was unnerving to say the least. I quickly checked the flight control responses and all was normal. The engine never skipped a beat and I continued in to make a normal landing. But I kept thinking what was that loud bang. As I shut down all systems on the plane I reached for the XGPS160 which is my GPS device for my iPad Mini. It was no where to be found. That is when it occurred to me that when I hit that bump in the air that it went airborne and slammed down on the floor and went under the seat. At least I finally knew what the loud bang was and no the GPS unit was not damaged. Apparently I hit some sort of severe up draft which threw me around. Lesson to be learned here is to tighten the seat belt and shoulder harness as much as possible. A full inspection of the plane today revealed no damage. Just thought you guys needed a good flight story. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

KR> Batteries
-Original Message- >From: brian.kraut--- via KRnet >When I was working on my 2S which was to have a Corvair with electronic >ignition and fuel only in the wings and needing a fuel pump I thought of >the backup battery situation I too only have wing tanks with Facet fuel pumps. Years ago when I was young and stupid and thought I was invincible when flying my KR (actually it was in 2006 one year after I made my first flight in 2006) I was buzzing my brother-in-law's house just outside of Milwaukee. My home base airport was 15 miles away from hi home. After doing a dive towards his house with the throttle mostly pulled back I went to pull up at about 100 feet over his house and applied full throttle to climb out and got nothing. Talk about pucker factor!!! I think the cheeks of my arse literally ripped the cloth off the seat. Anyway, all I could think of was where am I going to set her down as there was no place that was open. I could not climb but was maintaining altitude. Fortunately the terrain below me was dropping as he lived up on a ridge and this gave me some leverage altitude wise so I made a bee line toward the interstate which was about five miles away. I was pretty much in a panic mode as I scanned everything trying to figure what was happening. I reached the interstate and was now about 800 feet AGL so I turned over the interstate which took me directly to my home base ATC controlled airport. I now had a 12 mile runway under me so I concentrated on making it to the airport. I did not tell ATC what was happening. I did however make to the airport and landed uneventfully. Taxied to my hanger and sat there with the engine idling. Then it hit me like a brick wall that I did not flip my fuel pump to the alternate backup pump while I was in flight. I flipped the switch and shazam she went back to full power! The problem was the ground wire on the fuel pump had come loose. I did learn though that the Ellison carb and Corvair engine arrangement does have enough suction to pull fuel from wing tanks to sustain flight with no fuel pump. Would I do this again..heck no. So, what does this have to do with batteries? NOTHING. It does however tell you that you need back up systems on all phases to save your bacon. Oh yea, after that incident I installed a fuel pump pressure gauge directly in front of my line of sight so that I can constantly see what my fuel pressure is. Just thought you guys would like this story. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

KR> Several Questions: Running wire in finished wing.
-Original Message- From: T. W. Norman >I am going to be cutting a thin line in the wing so I can lay electrical >cable to the position lights and strobes at the tips of the wings. Treavor, There is no need to cut the wing to lay the wire. Go and get a piece of 1/2" EMT conduit that is 10 feet long. On one end use your dremel tools to cut some teeth into the conduit. Essentially you are making a 10 foot long hole saw. Since you are cutting through foam, you can then, by hand, drill the hole lengthwise through the wing in the location you wish for your wires to run. Once you have the homemade 10 foot hole saw through the wing take a fish tape and push it through the EMT conduit to push out any foam which is now inside the conduit. Once that is done use the fishtape to pull your wires back through the conduit. You could leave the conduit in the wing as it is minimal weight or you can remove the conduit by securing the wires on one end and slowly pulling the conduit out of the wing slowly turning it as you do so. Hope this helps. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

Guys, There are only two people who will ever know exactly what happened to them and that is Jeremy and Mike. Living here in Wisconsin and only 60 mile away from the crash site I have heard a lot of news stories and even some first hand info. The crash was very unfortunate as two very young outstanding men were taken from this world way too early. One major decision on takeoff that was made which no one should ever do was to request takeoff from midfield instead of using all of the available runway. This was one factor which possibly was detrimental to the outcome. Their flight path took them right into the parking lot of military vehicles manufactured by Oshkosh Truck whose property borders Oshkosh airport. When their problems started they had no power to climb, do a 180 or enough runway left to set her down. The only option was the parking lot of the military trucks which they hit two and came to an abrupt stop. An eyewitness employ at Oshkosh Truck who was in the parking lot stated the engine did not sound normal. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

KR> My Update
Hi All, I have survived yet another brutal Wisconsin winter. The weather here finally turned and the temps once again are above freezing. I managed to get my hanger door open two weeks ago and since then I have made three flights in my KR. All flights were flawless and more than a yeeehaaa can express. What a good feeling to get back in the air. This is my first post on my new laptop as I have just finished setting it up and transferred everything over from my old laptop. My 16 year old son took his first flight lesson two days ago and he is stoked about flying. I have started my annual inspection on my KR and should have it completed within the week. We are flying down to Charlotte, NC on April 18 and will be spending a week in the Carolina's. This is a two-fold trip. It is part vacation and part scoping the area for determining where we want to move to. Yes, we have decided to move back south and are pretty sure it will be somewhere near Charlotte. Suggesting to builders that 70 MPH is an appropriate >touchdown speed is really irresponsible. Sorry. >Mike >KSEE I have to disagree with the above statements. I made my first flight March 20, 2005. Back then everyone had drilled into my head that the KR had to be landed just above stall speed especially on your first landings in order to make a safe first landing. Taking everyone's advice, I made some practice approaches at altitude and then headed in for my first landing. The first landing will be your second most intensive pucker factor after the first takeoff. Your adrenaline will be pumping and you will be tense. Since I was told by many to make a high approach just above stall speed that is exactly what I did. That first landing was absolutely the worst landing I have ever made (except when I hit a deer) and by being so slow it almost caused me to crash my KR on touchdown. Everything was going well until I got too slow. Have you ever seen a duck making an approach to land and it's wings start rocking back and forth as it prepares for touchdown? That is the way I felt as my KR quickly lost lift and slammed down on the runway. Fortunately I did not do any damage but that was as close as I have ever come to making a crash landing. I am not saying that you must do 70 mph at touchdown but you better make sure you have sufficient speed to maintain a safe flight throughout the landing process. For me, I find that touchdown at 70 mph is ideal and I consistantly make baby butt smooth landings at that speed. The following is a post I recently made on December 26, 2014 on a "Belly Board" thread. - YHa. I just returned from a 1.2 hour flight around Steven Point, WI. This was my first flight since 10/25 due to our shi& weather we have up here. So what does this have to do with belly boards? Here is how I use mine in the landing sequence. I called left downwind 21 Stevens Point and reduced my speed to 125 MPH. Next I called turning left base 21 Stevens point and am now at 120 MPH. I maintain that speed through base and call turning final 21 Stevens Point. I pull back the power to slow her to 115 and drop the belly board to full down position. At this point I would estimate I am now at 1/4 mile final and slowing fast. I cross the numbers looking at 80 MPH and when the wheels touch the pavement I am doing 70 MPH and she sets down smooth a silk. The following are two links. The first is the web link to the construction of my solid belly board. The second is a landing video on runway 21 Stevens Point and note you can see the speed brake being lowered. Also note the minor deflection of the gear with touchdown and that is loaded up with two people on board. KR> First flight of 2015
Woke up this morning to clear skies and 31 degrees with a front moving in rapidly. I knew I had to fly. I managed to get to the airport about 8:30 and prepped my "Deer Slayer" KR for flight. She fired up around 9:15 and the winds were at 7 mph and gusting to 19 mph as the front was approaching. As I fueled up the edge of the front crossed the airport and it went from clear skies to 5000 overcast. Once done with the fueling I called taxing to runway 30 and headed out. After I did my run up I checked the winds once more and they were now 9 gusting 21 from 260. Away I went for a very smooth climb out and with the head winds a very short take off roll at that. I flew around the local area for about 45 minutes as the skies continued to deteriorate so I finally decided to head back in. Checked the winds and they were back to 7 gusting 17 from 270. Called in the approach and greased her right in for a smooth landing on 30. Can't wait till the next opportunity presented itself to sneak in another flight in my KR. For those of you who are new and do not know why my KR is called the Deer Slayer check out this link: http://www.flykr2s.com/deer.html Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

KR> Belly Board
YHa. KR> aileron controls
When I designed my aileron controls I made them adjustable for up and down travel. I do not remember why but I was a bit leery of having the differential travel so I drilled push rod attach points in the bell crank which would give me equal aileron travel and also the differential travel. When I made my first flight I had them set for equal travel since that was what I was used to in flying spam cans. I was so pleased with the performance and ease of flight control that I never did swap them over to the plans differential version and still to this day I fly with equal aileron travel. As far as rudder input on turns it is so minimal that I do not even realize I am working the rudder if I even do. On a slow lazy turn I do not even input the rudder and the ball will stay centered. Only on real sharp abrupt turns do I use rudder input. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Stevens Point, WI E-mail: flykr2s at charter.net Web: www.flykr2s.com

KR> Firewall beef up for nise gear
I have not heard of any Diehl actually collapsing at the firewall attach point. If it did I feel you have more to worry about than the nose gear. The Diehl nose gear is designed to collapse in the event of a hard landing at the forward most downward bend of the strut just above the wheel fork. Diehl designed this in to protect the firewall from being ripped out in the event of a hard Landing. I was not aware of that until after Joe Horton folded his under and I panicked and welded a support brace in that bend because I thought it was a weak point. As soon as the photo of that brace was put on my web site I received a phone call explaining that I had made a mistake and would now possibly rip my firewall out if I ever made an off field landing that was compromising. If I were you I would leave it as designed so it will do it's job when called upon. - Original Message - > The Diehl gear has two separate leg assemblies for conventional or > tricycle. The tricycle gear legs have angles on both sides. The > conventional gear legs are straight on one side. > > Chris Pryce I was going to dispute this statement since I went to nvAero web site and looked at the Diehl landing gear there now for sale and it is only tapered on one side. But, then I pulled out my construction photos from back when I was installing my gear and back then the tri-gear mains were tapered on both sides and followed the shape of the aluminum mounting brackets exactly. It appears that today the same mains are used for both type gear. Both Larry Howell and Chris are correct. Regardless of which type leg you actually have, on either set up, the angled side must be inward against the bracket flange. You will need an 1156 socket. Any auto parts store has them or any farm supply store such as "Farm and Fleet". They are in the auto section where all the "Help" brand parts are. Today, the ice finally melted enough to open my hanger door. This is the first time I have been able to open it since my last flight on November 14, 2013. Yep, you guessed it. I was not intending to fly but the urge was irresistible and I took to the sky. The Corvair took a little coaxing to start up. On the third attempt and after two blade rotations she fired right up. I taxied over to the fuel pumps and to my surprise there was an out of order sign on them. I did have enough fuel for a short flight of just over a half hour. What a rush to get back in the air after all this time. The flight was perfect. Just wanted to share this with you guys. KR> belly board flying characteristics?
Mark, Everyone I have ever talked to concerning belly boards always experienced a nose pitch up attitude. While on final I have to apply forward stick pressure to keep the nose down. This results in slower speed with a low nose attitude for great visibility on final. Also, I have never heard of anyone mounting the belly board to the main spar. I think if you do this you will once again be a pioneer and will have to report your flight characteristics as a comparison to the rest of us.
