for sale
I've been sitting here for an hour, starting, erasing, restarting, editing,
trying to figure out how to say what I need to say, so I'll just say it I
guess. After a couple of years of trying to complete this project, I have
run into so serious snags. Pardon me as I get long winded.? First off, I
purchased an abandoned project that was quite far along that had one major
flaw and that was the glass parts of the structure was wavy and uneven. It
didn't matter to me, I have lots of fiberglass experience on boats and
hovercraft. I made this decision after many months of checking the project
over against the plans etc. Ok so I cut all the glass off, fixed a couple
little things and began making the other decisions necessary to move
forward, like center stick or dual stick, seat position, flaps of no flaps.
In the mean time I began contacting EAA Tech counselors to get official
guidance on my project. I decided to keep the project stock with original
retract gear and re-engineer the gear lock mechanism as everyone else has
done. Then my Dad became ill and I spent most of my time caring for this
great WWII Navy Vet and stopped working on the plane. A year later Dad
passed away and I took some time off to rest up and help my mom.

Lack of a Tech Counselor is one of the major problems I have. I initially
contacted the EAA and got a list, three in my area. I contacted everyone on
the list. One had moved and not updated the EAA so he was out. One had
moved farther away than he was comfortable travelling. One didn't give me
the time of day. I went to the local EAA chapter and they didn't have
anyone at the time but gave me the name of a guy who was going to be their
designated Tech Counselor (TC). I contacted him, talked to him face to face
at the meeting and set up an appointment. He had t drive through my town on
the way back from work so it was perfect. Well, he was a no show. I called
him several times and got no answer, left messages etc.? Nothing.? Ok, so
now what. I continued down the path I had started so as not to be just
sitting around. I knew where I was going and until some told me otherwise I
was just going to continue but I couldn't get too far ahead of myself.

So I finally made phone contact with the original guy from the EAA list
that didn't give me the time of day.? He was about to go to Europe for a
month and we set a time to make contact again after her returned. He asked
me for my contact details etc. I was excited to get this underway. Well,
the allotted time came and went, no contact. Sent the guy several emails
(his preferred method of contact), and left him a couple voice mails and
got no return.

I kept on working, I got an experienced KR builder to stop by and take a
look. He gave me a few pointers, and suggested a few things, which I did. I
heard a fellow KR builder had enlisted the original guy I had arrangement
with as his adviser, so I made contact with him again. I told him about the
project again and he said he had a few other things to do and he would call
me right back. The call never came. So now, I'm really ticked off. I get
the fact these guys are volunteers but wow. I decided I was going to have
to be the worlds biggest pest and push the issue then I thought, do I
really want someone inspecting my project and giving me advice whose heart
is not in it. Not a chance. If I was the TC and I had a guy hounding me,
would I have a good attitude about it? Would I be able to look at his
project objectively?? Probably not.

Now the WAF (wife approval factor) is at an all time low.? She has asked me
to give up my dream. She wants me to concentrate on my artistic skills
etc.? I can't afford to buy a plane, I can't afford the high annual
expenses etc. My only option was to use my engineering, intuition and
skills and build something that I could use to stay flying. I'm in great
health, take no meds for anything, and it would be a shame to waste a
perfectly good FAA Medical. But alas, it must not have been meant to be.

So, for a reasonable period of time, my project is for sale. I have a
conventional, retractable gear, slightly widened (2"-3") KR-2 torn down,
back to boat stage with 2 sets of wings. One set built with Deihl wing
skins with 10gal fuel tanks in each wing. The other set was built to plans.
I have VW engine engine mount and a few other odds and ends. Gear just
needs to be re-attached etc and its rolling or convert it to fixed gear.
Also have forward deck with fuel tank built-in per plans. Pictures upon
request (Off List Please). Second set of wings (Deihl skinned) for sale
separately from the KR-2.

Anyway, this is not the way I wanted to go. I have engineered and air
tested several innovations I thought would enhance the KR but now that

Unless you will be flying from very short runways, lift producing
flaps are not necessary.? However, drag for the landing approach is
critical , IMHO.? If you want flaps, build them to produce drag also
for the landing approach.? A simple speed brake will suffice for
drag.? There really is no need to try to combine the two unless you
are looking for an aeronautical / mechanical challenge.? 600 hour
with speed brake only.

We recommend RG-58. If you choose to use another coax diameter, you are on
your own. It took us two years of experiments to determine the best toroid mix
for VHF antennas for RG-58.

Antennas are reciprocal. That is, they have no idea whether they are transmit
or receive. We believe ferrites are necessary on both transmit and receive
antennas.

Ok, here is one of the responses I got off net.

Name has been removed to protect his smartness.

Paul,
Receiving ONLY antennas do not need a RF choke, which is what those
things really do when installed. They are used on transmitting coax to
keep reflected RF energy (standing waves) from feeding back down the
coax into the transmitter and usually ruining the output
transistor(s). Sort of like an electronic check valve.

RST engineering is still in business, and they sell kits of stuff to
make antennas - which included's 20 ferrite toroids. Check it out at

http://www.rst-engr.com/

I don't know what the diameter of RG-400 is, so if you can tell me I
would appreciate it.

Have a good 4th weekend
xxx

Thanks for the response.
The RG-400 diameter is .200"
What you said is my understanding. But on RST front page they have a
picture of a VHF Nav antana. It looks like it has toroids. This is were I'm
confused

Paul -

Right you are - I just looked and sure enough, there seem to be toroids
in that picture. Now I'm not sure whether he used the wrong picture or
the wrong description, or whether he really does use toroids on
receiving antennas. I can see no reason to have them . . . but read on.

That pictured antenna is a dipole, and I have used dipoles with no balun
in ham radio - and believe me, they receive fine for VOI

CE reception. Whether or not a NAV signal is that much different I do
not know, or whether there is something about it that would make a
difference. I don't think so, but could sure be wrong. One thing I
have noticed about NAV antennas (OMNI?) on planes is that they are vee
shaped, usually pointing the open end of the vee toward the front of the
plane, but sometimes toward the rear. Maybe that makes a difference as
well so there are not blank spots in receiving NAV signals.

I guess I should not really have commented without absolutely being
positive about the toroids on NAV antennas, but for what it's worth, it
is true that for other uses RECEIVING antennas do not need a balun or RF
choke to function well.

Could you experiment on the ground with a temporary setup to prove the
proper reception, or would it have to be done in the air to be able to
receive a signal where you are ? I don't have a nav receiver and
indicator here to test with, or I would. As I learned many, many years
ago with ham radio, experimenting in that field is as much fun and pain
as doing it with airplanes. :-)

If you find out what the answer to the toroid question is, please let me
know sometime. I can always learn something new.

Thanks for the coax diameter info. That helps me.

If your KR is built like most KRs, the center section spar is sitting on top of
the bottom longerons which leaves a gap underneath the spar where the fuel line
would easily fit.

Just an idea. We have a gathering coming up in September. I would imagine
there is a set of fwd spars lying around gathering dust somewhere. If we
can get them to McMinnville with some sandbags and do our on test. I would
be willing to pitch in to help defray the cost.

I might be able to talk to Eric at Wicks to donate some of there scrap
spruce if someone would like to build a AS5048 Spar. We would just need a
center and one outboard spar.

could get my KR in and out of a 1200' strip under the right conditions near sea
level with a bit of practice, I don't think I would want that to be my normal
operation. I don't think take off would be a problem at all, but it would be
challenging to hit the front edge of the runway every time. Eventually, you'll
end up in the position where you're too fast to stop and too slow to get back
off for a go around. I'd opt for keeping the plane at a longer runway if that's
a viable option. As always, your mileage may vary, and my opinion may be skewed

At an actuation rate of 12mm or .472 inches per second it will take
approximately 12 seconds for the belly board to fully extend.

Is that fast enough?

http://macsblog.com/2014/12/can-you-install-ads-b-now-maybe-not/

Also, generally, some reader comments suggest that ADS-B will be used for "user
fees" and to "generate violations" since your plane is constantly reporting
such precise location info that getting a few feet too close to an obstacle, or
not high enough over "congested areas" to effect a safe power off landing, and
so on.
This will be required in Class A,B,C airspace, within 30NM of a Class-B
airport, Over B and C, in Class -E above 10,000MSL (except where the terrain is
higher), and within 12NM from the coastline, above 3000MSL.
One exception is aircraft certified without an electrical system. Maybe my

This article says installing ANY ADS-B equipment may not be an option for
experimentals.
http://macsblog.com/2014/12/can-you-install-ads-b-now-maybe-not/

Maybe my
purist idea to replicate Ken Rand's KR1 should hold true and include no
electrical system (hand prop).
Thoughts?

The only discussion I remember is when I said I'd INCREASE the dihedral
on my next plane to improve roll stability. I'll probably increase it

Got the brake lines reconnected to the main wheel brake cylinders on my
KR-2
today. Had to extend the Nylaflo tubing 1-1/2 inches due to moving the
wheels 3 inches further aft. I can see why some manufacturers pipe the top
of the master cylinder back to a reservoir. Bleeding the brake system is
fairly simple but messy and downright awkward on my KR-2 with the master
cylinders tucked away under the panel.

My first flight of the year, 1/11/2015

with my oldest 12 year old son, Juan Eduardo, we flew to San Nicolas, Buenos
Aires landing and come back to San Pedro, the flight was 50 minutes on very hot
day, 95? f out and 101? f into the cockpit
San Pedro landing was at 1470 feet over the soft runway (grass), in San Nicolas
was at 990 feet with a density altitude of 2170 feet.
the climb was very soft to keep oil temperature below 248? f, the cruiser to
1500 feet was comfortable if we forget the heat.

I am thinking along these lines, not building yet. The airport where I
will base my completed aircraft, whatever it may turn out to be, is at
6200'. Much as I like Jeff Scott's O-200 approach for a hot and high
home airport, a VW based engine is about the size of my budget for
purchase and to keep running. There will be way more times I would be
flying alone and it doesn't make sense to me to build a 2-seater. The
added span and wing area of a KR-2 on a single seat fuselage would seem
to make the most of the available power of a VW at high altitude.

KR> LANDING GEAR LEGS

2014-12-10 Thread ppaulvsk
The reason the?Diehl gear legs are wrapped is because the legs have a tendency
to twist when the brakes are applied. ?So the glass stiffens to legs. With our
legs being 1" thick we may not need to wrap them.

Bill,

Sure have.? Kept them at 1" thick.? If you want I can send you the drawings
of the legs, photos and the bracket CAD.? Email me at dprich01 at comcast.net .
As the plane sits right now with me in it there is about .5" deflection.
I'm not sure why folks wrap the legs in fiberglass.? Grumman doesn't.

Ray's bug
I've gotten things (including this most recent one that Larry is
referring to) from Ray's address for quite a long time. Never very often
and never anything that has caused a problem, but something got into his
address book a long time ago and occasionally sends things out to the
addresses in it. I'm no expert on this subject but it could be that his
computer doesn't have a "bug" exactly but rather his address book
contents have been harvested and used to send out spam. Or maybe that's
the very definition of an internet bug - I always think of bugs as
defects in programming. In any case it is very infrequent that I get
something from his address and it's always easy to identify as spam since
it's an impersonal message including a link we're supposed to click on.
Of course I never click on such links from these kinds of emails. I'm
very clever. I'm a pilot.

Mike
KSEE

For what it's worth, I'll mention that I never have ever used an "address
book" packaged with email clients. They are prime targets for the
spammers & other evil doers and of all the prime targets, Internet
Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express are the most targeted since they are
packaged with Windows and therefore give the spammers & evil doers more
bang for their buck. That's the way it used to be anyway. I'm sure
they've gotten a lot more sophisticated with their tricks.

Only one side failed...the beauty of a double pole switch...the two
circuits are completely isolated from each other, except they are within
one enclosure. I'm pretty sure WW got that idea from me...I did it
first and he liked the idea, at least that's what he told me. You could
use two SPST switches, but when you do that you have the possibility of
having them both turned off at once...not good in a rapid-first highly
tense situation where that could be overlooked, and you'd also be
connecting fuel to ignition, rather than keeping them separated. You'd
need four SPST switches to accomplish the same functionality, with an
increase in human error potential. When I flip my switch I wouldn't
even notice anything happened except the green LED turns RED (it's a
bicolor). See http://www.n56ml.com/electrical/index.html to get the
gist of how mine is done (although the bicolor LED isn't shown here).
N56ML flew 1130 hours with this setup without a single hiccup.

Since the bad switch incident, I now start the engine with the switch in
the "backup" mode, so the ignition gets its juice from the backup
battery, rather than the main circuit. This not only gives me a check
of the backup battery, but it ensures the ignition system is getting a
full 12.8V during starting, rather than "whatever is left over" when the
starter has taken a huge bite out of the main battery power. Once it
starts, I swap it over to "primary" to make that red LED go away, and
continue to fly it that way until I land. Works for me! Of course the
iEFIS also monitors and displays the voltage on both backup and main
battery at all times anyway, so the main point is more juice to the
ignition system and a check of the switch, rather than doing it on runup.

and would very much love to get a ride with someone in a KR, specifically a
corvair powered KR.

His name is Rob and he is currently staying in Valdosta North Florida but
will be making his way towards Washington next week via Charleston and then
West before returning to Fort Lauderdale to board a plane to Trinidad and
back to his yacht.

Is there anybody on or near to his route willing to give my buddy a ride?

KR> Airfoil difference

2014-09-03 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com
When would you use the AS5046 airfoil and not the AS5048? I made my rib
templates with the AS5048 and needed some more templates and printed by
mistake the AS5046. I noticed the height of the main spar is thicker.

Wings is FAA safety program. I don't no much about it. I know you can get
some type of credit towards your review when you complete a course. There
are hundreds of them. There are some EAA webinars you can also get credit
for. Maybe a CFI can explain it a little better.

Not KR related but vary informative. Before my flight instructor would
sign off on my review. He wanted me to sign up for this FAA Wing program and
take this Flight Review Prep Guide. course #ALC-25. For someone who has'nt
flown for 23 years. It was a great refresher course. There are many other
courses available under this program.

2014-06-03 Thread ppaulvsk via KRnet
It would be interesting to see if there's a difference in cooling efficiency
between the baffling and the?plenums on the same engine. I talked to WW about
the conversation we had about you and ?Joe H's had same engings and similar
temperatures. WW?said that Joe's baffle design could have been made more
efficient. ?That is why you had similar numbers. ?I think with you changed over
to plenums and have a good temperature comparison. ?It will finally put this to
rest.

2014-06-02 Thread ppaulvsk via KRnet
Congratulations Mark. I to made my first flight in left seat in a C172 in 25
years. It felt like I was a brand new student pilot at first. The instructor
was very impressed how I progress throughout the flight. He said one more
flight should do it. ?
How does 819JF performance and weight and balance compare to 56ML?

N891JF flew again yesterday. It felt like a "first flight", given that I'd
removed, upgraded, or replaced just about everything in the plane, so the
stress level was a bit high. It was a fairly uneventful flight though, 2.4
hours and 9 touch-and-goes just to get the feel of it (and the new speed brake)
again. I do very much like the speed brake.

I'm now working through a short list of minor squawks, and number one on the
list was the deletion of the tailwheel cable springs and slack and making them
"straight wired" like N56ML, which I've already dealt with. A lot of data was
gathered, the Explorer is being recalibrated based on that data, and it's now
full of fuel and awaiting the next flight. I'd have flown again today but it
was a bit windy for that, and will be for the next several days. Tomorrow
night will likely be the reinstallation of wheel pants.

I think this will do nicely...

KR> Sanding blocks

2014-04-27 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com
Thansk for the Ideas. I have a piece of 4" schedule 40. It's a little
heavy at 4'. I might go to Home depot and get a piece of schedule 20. I'm
trying a 1' x 4" with a L angle on top to stiffen it up. With two vise grips
clamped on to it for handle it working good. I found a can on of brush on
Contact cement in the basement which is working much better then the spray. I
think for the outboard wing and the turtleback I'll use the PVC pipe.
I didn't know sanding could be so fun. Seeing my strips of wood and foam
blocks turn into a horizontal stabilizer. .

I did the same thing with a 2x4. Staple the edge of the sandpaper to the
vertical side of the 2x4. Worked for me.

Any suggestions on sanding blocks. I made a 4ft board for my horizontal
stabilizer out of a straight 2x4. I'm having problems keeping the sandpaper on
the board. I used contact cement and that's not seem to hold and when the
edges peal up it digs into the foam. I'm at the start of a lot of sanding
and I figure there's a LOT of experience out there with sanding. I could
definitely use some suggestions.
Thanks

2014-02-18 Thread PPaulVsk at aol.com

Can someone tell me how thick the Diehl gear legs are.

A few months ago someone posted about some fiberglass gear legs that look
similar to the Diehl gear legs for $50.00 a set on ebay. I got a set of
them.
.
One thing beside needing trimming them is that they are 1" thick. I
think that's thicker then the Diehl gear and might be too stiff.

Larry, the mark that you see is a burn mark from my sander. I did remove

Would sanding burn marks affect the bond with T88 epoxy. I think I've been
wearing out my sandpaper a little far to save $ and get to a point to were
I burn a lot wood.

Looks like you're moving right along on your project. Are you using
aircraft grade spruce? It's hard to tell from the photos, they are a

other looks like it has a knot on the end grain. The photo makes it
