Mark,

You're not responsible for doing ALL THE RESEARCH. If they are
working, leave them alone. :-)

A lot has been said about gas strut mounting, and I'm sure it's mostly true,
at least for the struts described. I mounted my "Life-o-mat" struts "upside
down" for some reason that was way too along ago to remember, and I must say
they are as smooth as I could ever hope for, and I've had zero problems with
them. They also have the nice feature of slowing down at the end of the up
stroke so the canopy is gently brought to a smooth stop. Of course now I'll
have to turn them around to see if it makes any difference, which will take
about two minutes, but I can't imagine that they could work any better. See

Hi Robin

I took mine to a strut regasser to decompress them. It only took a minute
with the right gear and cost nothing. You can't go too far or the seals will
start to fail and before you know it they have to be pumped up again.

I got my struts from a place that also regas struts, they will regas at a
lower pressure, That's what I did.
Worked, well, Now after a few years, a little more pressure would be good.

Hi Guys,

I'm after some help with gas struts.

I want to use gas struts for the canopy, I have 2 but the pressure is too
high. Apparenty you can increase the pressure but most struts you cannot
reduce the pressure. With the struts that you can reduce the presure there
is a valve in one end but these do not have the valve.

I am thinking of drilling hole & welding in a valve from a vehicle tube has
anyone out there tried this & how did you get on. I only want about 10 -20
PSI.

Many thanks

And since you mentioned the marine spring hatch holder. Here is the first
one ever used on a KR. If anyone has used one before me then I will stand

I found two low pressure gas struts on a pickup truck fiberglass canopy rear
hatch lid. They work perfect and only cost me $5.00 (U.S.) plus the
ball joints ($5.00) from the local auto parts store.

Another thing to look at is a hatch holder from a boat place. It is basically a
spring rather than strut. Bend the spring and the canopy comes down.

After trying several struts from AutoZone, wrong length, wrong pressure,
I spotted the struts on my pickup truck topper setting in the drive. They
are use to lift / hold the back glass door. Result: perfect length and
perfect pressure.

The size and weight of your canopy will dictate the
strut required so no two requirements will be the same. Good luck..

Does anyone recall the tip given several years ago on how to lower the
pressure in a strut by cutting a grove or something at the end of the
rod and letting out some pressure? I'm sure it was mentioned on the
net and maybe a web page given for instructions.

At the risk of bearing the strut horse any more, most of the manufacturer's
websites have a variety of lengths and strengths to choose from. There are
some details on the one I used at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kcf.html
, about 2/3 of the way down. They are still working great...

Gas struts CAN be reduced in pressure it's just a matter of releasing
the gas, re-sealing the unit ...then resetting to your spec's I do it
over here for a living I have a cousin in NZ that could possibly do it
for you i8f you get stuck !.cheers Vikk

I know I will get some flames over this but here is what I would do, I would
take the old ones off of my ford probe rear hatch they have leaked the gas
out evidently and they are weak I bet you could cruise the junk yards and
find some that are a bit tired. Yes I am cheap.
