2013-03-06 Thread Will Coley
Community radio KISL (Avalon CA) is hosting a week-long Transom
Traveling Radio Story Workshop on audio narrative.
http://transom.org/?p=32331

Ten beginning-level students will get five-days of intensive training
on Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast.

depending on housing, and includes:

Training by Rob Rosenthal, lead instructor for the Transom Story Workshop.
Your own copy of Hindenburg Journalist audio editor to keep.
Use of quality field-recording equipment. (Or bring your own if you like.)
Seven nights housing.
Three group meals during the five days.

Workshop participants will gather Sunday evening and for the rest of
the week be immersed in field recording, interviewing, digital
editing, script writing, and narration. By the end of the week, each
participant will have produced a short profile of a creative person
living on Catalina. We finish with a Friday night listening party.
Some pieces may air on KISL-FM.

Dates and Deadlines

Applicants notified of selection decisions March 15, 2013
Enrollment confirmation March 22, 2013
Tuition/housing costs due in full April 1, 2013

The Selection Process: Selection is competitive. We want creative,
dedicated newcomers seeking a strong set of entry-level skills.
Previous experience isn’t needed, but helps: preference goes to those
who’ve tried audio storytelling before. Eight participants will be
selected from around the country (or the world!). Two Catalina
residents will also be selected. They will receive tuition
scholarships* made available by the Catalina Island Performing Arts
Foundation as part of a KISL-FM effort to stimulate the production of
more local content.

eleven years he ran the internationally renowned Salt Institute for
Documentary Studies radio program. Now he’s lead instructor of the
Transom Story Workshop. He has presented training sessions for
National Geographic, the National Press Photographers Association,
Third Coast Festival, and in college programs. Rob produces the
HowSound podcast on audio storytelling for PRX (Public Radio
Exchange). He specializes in local stories for local audiences,
content that connects people to place, such as his Malaga Island: A
Story Best Left Untold and the audio tour Deep Woods and River Roads.
Rob also works internationally. Two of his recent multi-media pieces
are Justice Denied and Rights Not Rescue.

Making Your Own Media: “Media for the 99%” Summit
http://lamediareform.wordpress.com/

The media is no longer that “black and white and read all over” object
the neighbor kid threw on your parents’ lawn every morning, right?

No, now it’s something people all around you are creating for
themselves — on computer networks, with flipcams and smart phones, on
the radio — to advance their causes, to help guide their communities
to a brighter tomorrow, to better our world.

You’re already doing some of that yourself, too, right?

So join us this Saturday at the “4th Annual Media Reform Summit: Media
for the 99%” to learn how to do even more.

We’ll have headliners Robert Scheer, the renowned LA Timesman and
Truthdig editor, and Craig Aaron, Free Press CEO and President.

We’ve got a dynamite “The Future of News Is Now” media panel with
KCET’s Val Zavala, KPCC’s Sharon McNary, KPFK’s Maria Armoudian, and
XM Public Radio’s Jesse Thorn.

And then, to get you waist deep in the big media yourself, we’re
presenting ten workshops that will give you hands-on tutoring on how
to effect change in your community by creating your own media.

Want to know how to create your own online magazine, or become a
progressive culture critic, or livestream events as they happen? We
can help.

Want to know how to post multimedia stories onto the Web with your
mobile phone, or how to make a powerful video, or how to represent
your cause effectively with the mainstream media? We’ve got you
covered.

Check out the list of 10 workshops below, organized in two sets of
five, and sign up for the event.

WHEN: Saturday, March 3 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
WHERE: Occidental College, 200 Johnson Hall
RSVP: Here.
AGENDA: Here.

See you Saturday!

Citizen Journalism on the Net: LA Progressive founders will show
step-by-step how they created an online magazine, including author
recruitment, website development, and advertising and sponsorship
development. The LA Progressive can serve as a roadmap for citizen
journalists elsewhere to create their own similar efforts. With Sharon
Kyle and Dick Price

Food Trucks: From Roach Coach to Pop-Culture Boom! This panel
discusses how citizen journalists have captured some of the tensest,
politically charged, and controversial moments of the food truck
movement in L.A., and across the country. With Erin Glenn and Michele
Gran

How to be an Advocate in the Big Media World: This panel will talk
about how to stand up for the media you want to see by being a
kick-ass advocate for community-based media. Everything from keeping
the big guys accountable to maintaining real alternatives in radio,
television and on the web. With Tracy Rosenberg and Inez González

Creative Commons and Other Ways Internet Law Empowers Media
Reformers. This workshop will be a overview of Internet-related legal
concepts that can actually help and empower media reformers. The goal
is to give the audience an understanding of what they CAN do when
re-purposing content, responding to censorship threats from third
parties, and controlling the way they disseminate their messages
online. Shaun Spalding and Art Neill

Video the Vote 2012: Keeping Watch on Democracy: In preparation
for the 2012 elections, this workshop will look at Video the Votes
reports from previous elections to give an overview of voter
suppression in action, and discuss covering this years elections with
more developed technology, including portable streaming video. With
John Wellington Enis

Occupy The Media: The Process, Practice, Publication, Posting and
Broadcasting of a People’s Critique of Popular Culture: How can a
people’s “pop culture-ologist” go about getting his/her vision out to
the public? The workshop includes practical steps to put theory into
practice in various media formats: online, social media, print, radio,
TV, etc. The goal: How to provide people’s coverage of the arts for
the 99%. With Ed Rampell

How Insight Out News Covered Occupy LA: Margot Paez will discuss
her work with Insight Out News, interspersing her presentation with
demonstrations of videos she created in her coverage of Occupy LA,
discussions of the tools and production processes she employed, and
plenty of time for audience members to ask questions and share their
own videography experiences. With Margot Paez

Mobile Voices: We’ll show participants how to post multimedia
stories directly to the web from a cell phone, and we’ll talk about
how this can be used as part of popular communication and as an

2012-01-13 Thread Will Coley
*Deadline: 15 January 2012*

The Los Angeles Media Reform Group (http://lamediareform.org) encourages
community activists and grassroots media makers to present their ideas at
its fifth annual LA Media Reform “Media for the 99%” Summit, scheduled
for Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Occidental College.

“We’re looking for people who are excited about empowering people to
utilize the media, fight for social justice, and preserve our democracy
through a variety of tools, outlets and approaches,” said Amanda Shaffer,
the group’s chair.

Interested in proposing a breakout session topic or speaker? Please
download and fill out this Call for Workshops
formhttps://docs.google.com/a/oxy.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFdkUjhDR1Z0RzVuTnc2MTdPWXQwM1E6MA#gid=0
 (http://bit.ly/workshopform) *Deadline: 15 January 2012.*

The day-long event features panel sessions, speakers, and networking. We’re
looking for several types of interactive breakout sessions this year:

   - Hands-on, “create your own media” instructional workshops.
   - Experience-based explorations of media policies and politics.
   - In-depth discussions of the current state of the media.
   - Personal lesson-learned sessions about “Occupy” and the media.

A look at last year’s
programhttp://lamediareform.wordpress.com/just-media-summit-schedule/
(http://bit.ly/LASummit2011) might help give you an idea of what we’re
looking for.

Please contact us with questions about the event and especially if you have
an interesting workshop topic, but aren’t sure if it will fit. *A key
selection criterion this year will be how you can help bring an audience to
our summit and your workshop*.

The Los Angeles Media Reform Group focuses on holding news outlets
accountable to the public interest and encouraging community members to
create their own media, and to be critical consumers of the mass media.

[LAAMN] Audio reflections from Transom #RadioStory Workshop

2011-12-07 Thread Will Coley
Transom Story Workshop – Class of Fall 2011
http://transom.org/?p=21825

Intro from Jay Allison: For seven weeks, students from all over the US
(plus Canada and Australia) came to Woods Hole to immerse themselves
in radio. They were led by Rob Rosenthal, with help from all of us at
Transom, WCAI, and visiting friends—Ira Glass, John Barth, Kelly
McEvers, and many others. They were beginners when they arrived, some
with no experience at all, but they all left with completed radio
pieces good enough for broadcast on our station and nationally. They
lived and ate together. They worked on their stories until dawn. They
actually looked different when they left, filled with new energy. They
were a wonderful, coherent, lively group of people and we loved having
them here on Cape Cod. Audiences are already benefitting from the
stories they told. Take a look and listen. The students and Rob are
around to answer any questions you may have.

Location: ACLU Foundation-Southern CA 1313 W 8th St # 200, Los
Angeles, CA (map http://bit.ly/SeptN2LAmap)
You'll need to sign in with the security gaurd and he/she will let you
upstairs. Be sure to RSVP!

Learn about various decisions a board makes such as undertaking a
strategic planning process and discuss ways in which to insert
technology into the discussion. You’ll also explore various low-tech
methods to engage Boards of Directors such as putting an issue on the
board agenda, allowing for time to discussion during a board meeting,
working to build consensus and ultimately making a decision. Practice
what you learn during a mock meeting that Ron Milam will facilitate
followed by a group discussion.

Our speaker and facilitator, Ron Millam, works to transform Southern
California into a sustainable region by developing the leadership of
community-based organizations. Since 2005, Ron has served over 55

*Freedom From Fear Award Commends 15 “Ordinary People” for Extraordinary
Acts of Courage on Behalf of Immigrants and Refugees; Winners Named at 2011
Netroots Nation Conference*

**(Minneapolis, MN, June 18, 2011) Four DREAM students who walked 1500 miles
from Miami to Washington DC to dramatize the barriers facing undocumented
immigrants. Two men—one American and one South Asian—who rescued trafficked
guest workers from virtual bondage. A police chief who was vilified for
speaking up against local enforcement of federal immigration laws. An
African American legislator in the Deep South who helped pass a model
anti-racial profiling ordinance, citing the unlawful targeting of immigrants
in his state. LGBTQ and undocumented youth spurring others to come out of
the shadows.

These and other “unsung heroes” are recipients of the first Freedom from
Fear Awards http://freedomfromfearaward.com/celebrate/awardees, honoring
“ordinary people who have committed extraordinary acts of courage on behalf
of immigrants and refugees — individuals who have taken a risk, set an
example, and inspired others to awareness or action.” Fifteen winners were
announced today at the 2011 Netroots Nation
http://www.netrootsnation.org/conference in Minneapolis, MN.

The Awards are particularly fitting on the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom
Rides that helped dismantle segregation in the South, and on the heels of
the Arab Spring that has shown the power of ordinary people overcoming their
fear, said sponsors of the Awards.

The Freedom from Fear Award was created by philanthropic leaders Geri
Mannion and Taryn Higashi http://freedomfromfearaward.com/about as a way
of “paying forward” $10,000 they received as co-recipients of the 2009 Robert
W. Scrivner Award for Creative
Grantmakinghttp://www.cof.org/templates/content.cfm?ItemNumber=791,
presented by the Council on Foundations. Friends and colleagues contributed
additional funds to meet a $100,000 challenge grant from the W.K.Kellogg
Foundation, thus enabling 15 winners to receive $5,000 each and a
commissioned art piece. The awards were administered and produced by Public
Interest Projects http://www.publicinterestprojects.org/ (PIP).

Higashi explained the founders’ motivation, “Immigration is a very
controversial issue right now. We wanted to recognize some of the
incredible unsung heroes who are standing up in their communities—sometimes
at great personal risk—to make this a more just and humane society for
immigrants.”

The new one-time prize attracted 380 nominations from 42 states through
online outreach and word-of-mouth. “We were so inspired by reading all
these stories—young people risking deportation to educate policy makers,
police officers who resist racial profiling, business people who challenge
their peers,” said Mannion. “It’s worth celebrating how many courageous
people are working to keep us strong as a nation of immigrants.”

Several Freedom from Fear Award
winnershttp://freedomfromfearaward.com/celebrate/awardeeswill speak
during the closing session of Netroots Nation on Saturday, June
18th. Netroots Nation http://www.netrootsnation.org/ is an annual
conference that will attract several thousand progressive bloggers and
organizers to Minneapolis this year.

Reid, and Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce—all while risking arrest and
deportation.

*Osfel Andrade* http://freedomfromfearaward.com/celebrate/osfelandrade:

Andrade filed a class-action federal lawsuit against his former employer on
behalf of approximately 500 workers demanding back wages for years of

*This Month's Topic:*
*Digital Storytelling in L.A. County's Diverse Communities*

 *When: *
Monday, March 28, 2011 at 6:30 PM

 *Where:*
 *Asian Pacific American Legal Center*
1145 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA

The Alhambra Source was launched recently as a hybrid model of professional
community journalism. It is a USC Annenberg joint communication and
journalism research initiative and the intention is to provide coverage to a
community that has a shortage of local news coverage, has low civic
engagement levels, and is very diverse linguistically and ethnically.

Our speaker, Daniela Gerson, is editor of the Source and previously an
immigration reporter for the New York Sun and contributor to Financial Times
Magazine, New York Times, and New York Public Radio. She will talk about
making the transition to online media, working with community members as an
outsider, and how organizations can also tell their own stories and make
sure they're heard.

What is Netsquared? On the last Tuesday of each month, social changemakers
and web innovators get together to network, mix, swap stories and ideas,
build new relationships and learn at Net Tuesday, an event produced by
NetSquared a project of TechSoup http://www.techsoup.org. All those
interested, involved, or employed in nonprofits and that recognize the
importance and utility of technology in the sector are invited to join us

[LAAMN] Let's Talk About Racial Profiling: Conversations on Facebook!

2010-12-06 Thread Will Coley
Join the conversations on Facebook all this week! http://on.fb.me/avNNel

-- Forwarded message --
From: Tong Lee - Rights Working Group t...@rightsworkinggroup.org

Over this past year, community organizations and individuals concerned
about the increasing incidents of the degrading and unconstitutional
practice of racial profiling have joined the Racial Profiling: Face
the Truth campaign (http://bit.ly/4AOgwX) and held small Conversations
and large events to educate people about the pervasiveness of the
problem. These Conversations have led to over 5,000 signatures
gathered for a petition to the DOJ calling for a revision to their
guidance on racial profiling (http://bit.ly/fiB4JK), postcards to
Congress to co-sponsor the End Racial Profiling Act, and strengthening
local campaigns on stopping racial profiling.

Join us from December 6 – 10th and host a Conversation. We've revised
the Toolkit (http://bit.ly/f8qqL4) and included new tools and
resources.

If you haven't had a chance to to host a Conversation this year,
please consider bringing your friends and allies together to learn
about the effects of racial profiling on our communities and to engage
them in your local campaign or the national movement to change
policies that violate our human and constitutional rights.  Educating
the public on racial profiling is an important step towards ending the
degrading practice.  Conversations will lead up to Human Rights Day on
December 10th, which is an opportunity to remind everyone about the
importance of standing up for our human rights.

For more information about hosting a Face the Truth Conversation and
to download the Toolkit, visit
http://www.rightsworkinggroup.org/conversation-project. If you are
hosting a Conversation or event, please register your event
(http://bit.ly/dRDMfs) so we can get materials to you in a timely
manner and to show our strength.

If you are unable to host a Conversation, join us the week of December
6th on FACEBOOK for an online-Conversation http://on.fb.me/avNNel.  Be
sure to become a Fan of RWG if you haven't already to participate in
the discussion.

If you have any questions, please contact Tong Lee at
t...@rightsworkinggroup.org or (202) 591-3300 x 102.

[LAAMN] Just Media Summit: Call for Workshop Proposals [Due 12/1]

2010-11-11 Thread Will Coley
JUST MEDIA: LA Media Reform Summit 2011
http://lamediareform.wordpress.com/mediasummit2011/workshops/

Does the media tell your story fairly, if at all?
Are you happy with the coverage of issues you care about?
Does mainstream media inform you or distract you?
How do we use the media to bring about change?

If you are as concerned that our democracy is being undermined by the
media, that communities are being harmed by the lack of coverage of
local issues by mainstream media, and that diverse groups lack access
to the media, now is the time to act.

*** Submit your workshop proposal online: http://bit.ly/9iFgc9 ***

2010-10-22 Thread Will Coley
Come on down and join the Eastside LA Netsquared for:

This Month's Topic: Hitting the magic internet money button: Funding
your mission, preparing for crisis.

When: Wednesday, October 27 at 7:00PM

Where: SAJE, 152 West 32nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007. Map:
http://bit.ly/dCkR7J

Drawing on his experience as the online team at ACORN, Nathan
Henderson-James will lead a discussion on the fundamentals of using
the internet for fundraising and for supporting an organization's
mission. Part of the conversation will be reserved for how building
now can allow you to take advantage of unexpected opportunities or
give you more options in a crisis.

WHO'S NATHAN?
Nathan Henderson-James has 17 years of experience in organizing
low-income families to fight for social justice, mostly with ACORN.
For the last two years of ACORN's existence he served as its online
team overseeing its online advocacy program and its online
communications. In that time he helped grow its email list from 44,000
to 125,000 and raised over $200,000 in a 14 month period. He is now
the Online Director for the Leadership Center for the Common Good,
where he oversees a program dedicated to helping groups organizing
poor people to integrate technology, especially online tech, into
their organizing methodologies and programs. He is also a gigantic
futbol fan who writes a fan blog covering the Los Angeles Galaxy.

* Detention Watch Network calls for Dignity, Not Detention on One-year
Anniversary of Obama Administration’s Detention Reform Announcement *

*Groups demand the Obama Administration put an end to human rights
violations in the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system*

* *

*Washington, D.C. *– Human rights groups around the country participated in
a National Day of Action organized by Detention Watch Network to mark the
one-year anniversary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
Immigration Customs and Enforcement’s (ICE) 2009 detention reform
announcement. The National Day of Action is part of the, “*Dignity, Not
Detention: Preserving Human Rights and Restoring Justice*,” campaign led by
the Detention Watch Network, which calls for an end to the human rights
abuses in detention centers, the restoration of due process in the
enforcement of immigration laws, and the implementation of cost saving
alternatives.

As part of the Day of Action, Detention Watch Network released a joint
report, *Year One Report Card: Human Rights the Obama Administration’s
Immigration Detention Reforms*, it co-authored with National Immigrant
Justice Center and the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights. The report
reveals that many of those detained still suffer egregious human rights
violations while in custody. Immigrants continue to be jailed for months or
even years under substandard conditions. Mistreatment by guards, grossly
deficient medical care, use of solitary of confinement, and limited access
to family and counsel remain persistent problems.

Last year, ICE promised to move away from the sprawling network of jails and
prisons it uses to detain immigrants toward a less punitive model and take
concrete steps to improve conditions of confinement for the nearly 400,000
people detained each year. But according to the report, the agency’s reform
agenda has been compromised by a growing detention population, internal
opposition to reform by local ICE officials, and the expansion of ICE
enforcement programs like 287(g), Secure Communities, and the Criminal Alien
Program (CAP) that rely on local law enforcement agencies to channel more
and more immigrants into the detention system.

“What the Year One Report Card shows is that the steps the Obama
Administration has taken this year are not enough to bring about meaningful
changes in the lives of immigrants,” said Emily Tucker, Policy and Advocacy
Director at Detention Watch Network. “Until ICE limits detention to only
those rare cases where it has been shown necessary to ensure public safety,
the human rights crisis in the U.S. immigration detention and deportation
system will persist.”

Participants in the National Day of Action are calling for the restoration
of human rights within the detention system, and an end to programs that
indiscriminately channel immigrants into the detention and deportation
system. Coordinated actions occurred across the country in cities including
Austin, TX, Freehold, NJ, Minneapolis, MN, Seattle, WA and Trenton, NJ. For
more information visit www.dignitynotdetention.org.

The report is available at http://www.detentionwatchnetwork.org/

The *Detention Watch Network* is a national coalition of organizations and
individuals working to educate the public and policy makers about the U.S.
immigration detention and deportation system and advocate for reform so that
all who come to our shores receive fair and humane treatment. *For more

[LAAMN] Call to Graphic Artists: Stop ICE Expansion with Your Art!

2010-10-01 Thread Will Coley
via Detention Watch Network: http://bit.ly/9mTvwA

We urge all artists who want to challenge immigration enforcement and
detention to take action and create an image. The images will be used
as part of our online campaign DIGNITY NOT DETENTION
http://detentionwatchnetwork.org (much like the excellent images
created for the AltoArizona campaign
http://www.altoarizona.com/artcampaign.html).

Details:

   * Create an image that shows your support for our demands (below).
   * Make sure to include the title of the campaign in the work:
“Dignity not Detention”
   * Send all submissions and questions to t...@detentionwatchnetwork.org
   * Deadline: Ideally October 5, before our “Day of Action” on
October 6 but we’re happy to accept art throughout the month.

Specifications:

   * Image size must be 18×24 inches with a 1/2 inch border all the
way around. We’d like these dimensions in case we want to publish the
image in the future (with attribution of course).

Our Campaign Demands:

1. Put an end to human rights abuses in the immigration detention and
deportation systems.
2. Halt wasteful government spending on detention growth.
3. Prevent the arbitrary detention of more than 300,000 people year
and start using cost-saving alternatives.
4. Restore due process to immigration laws and guarantee that every
person has the right to a fair day in court.
5. End expansion of local enforcement programs that are contributing
to the growth of the detention system.

We look forward to sharing your work on this blog and throughout our campaign!

The Detention Watch Network (DWN), the national coalition of
organizations and individuals working to educate the public and policy
makers about the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system and
advocate for humane reform so that all who come to our shores receive
fair and humane treatment.

We believe that by working together we can effect greater change in
the immigration detention system. Our members and supporters include
organizations providing services to those in immigration detention and
their families, and organizations and individuals advocating on behalf
of those in immigration detention. We are lawyers, activists, social
workers, national advocates, students, community organizers, faith
communities, former detainees, and affected families from around the
country.

[LAAMN] Wed 9/22 in LA: Markos Moulitsas Speaking in LA

2010-09-21 Thread Will Coley
Markos Moulitsas Speaking in LA September 22nd

http://www.laprogressive.com/the-media/markos-moulitsas-speaking/

Markos Moulitsas, a driving force in new media and founder of The
Daily Kos, will speak and sign his ground-breaking book at a free
reading to support the LA Media Reform Group’s annual media summit to
be held February 26, 2011.

The Daily Kos is among the largest and most influential progressive
online political communities. Known for his biting wit, unwavering
gaze, and willingness to take on all sides of the political spectrum,
Moulitsas is a regular on cable news shows such as Meet the Press,
Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and Real Time with Bill Maher and is a
columnist for The Hill. He was recently banned from MSNBC for a
Twitter fight with right-wing host Joe Scarborugh.

In his just released American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin, and Power
Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right, Markos Moulitsas—known to
millions as simply “Kos”—argues that America’s radical right shares
the same traits as our main international enemy—Islamic radicalism.
Both extremist groups favor theocracy, curtail civil rights, repress
women and revile homosexuality, subvert science and education, and
revere force over diplomacy.

“In this day and age of gut-reacting, gutter-fighting world of
hyperbole and rhetoric, it is time for critical thinkers to unite and
support others who commit so much time to reporting facts.” – Tapia
Martinez – LA Media Reform Group; Co-Founder.

“It isn’t possible to understand American politics now without
understanding the worldview and arguments of Markos Moulitsas. If you
still believe the Beltway caricature of the squishy, compromising,
conciliatory American left, American Taliban should disabuse you of
that notion.” — Rachel Maddow

Kos’s earlier publications include the critically acclaimed Crashing
the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered
Politics (2006) and Taking on the System: Rules for Radical Change in
a Digital Era (2008).

Details:

Wednesday, September 22, 7 p.m.
Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Westminster Chapel
3300 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles

*Admission is free with RSVP in advance to la...@commoncause.org
*Attendees are encouraged to purchase the author’s book at the event

The LA Media Reform group is sponsoring this event in collaboration
with the LA Progressive, Alliance Hollywood, and Netroots Nation.

The Los Angeles Media Reform Group focuses on holding news outlets
accountable to the public interest and encouraging citizens to create
their own media, and to be critical consumers of the mass media. Its
next annual workshop will be Saturday, February 26th, 2011, at
Occidental College.

The LA Progressive is a two-year-old electronic magazine that comments
daily on issues of political, social, and cultural consequence to
progressives in Los Angeles and everywhere.

Alliance Hollywood is a social advocacy group that utilizes the voice,
media and financial power of the entertainment industry to fight
corporate interest groups on Capitol Hill.

Netroots Nation amplifies progressive voices by providing an online
and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more
effective in using technology to influence the public debate. Within
that campus, we strengthen community, inspire action and serve as an
incubator for progressive ideas that challenge the status quo and
ultimately affect change in the public sphere.

* During the last week of each month, social changemakers and web innovators
get together to network, mix, swap stories and ideas, build new
relationships and learn at monthly events, an event produced by NetSquared (
http://www.netsquared.org/) a project of TechSoup (http://home.techsoup.org).
All those interested, involved, or employed in nonprofits and that recognize
the importance and utility of technology in the sector are invited to join
us for discussion and exchange.

WHY AN EASTSIDE GROUP? Due to the realities of the traffic flows in our fair
city (or lack thereof), this Eastside group is an attempt to gather folks
who are doing great work east of roughly Western Blvd. We know the true
divider is the LA River but we'd like to keep it broader. Yes, Westsiders
are always welcome!

EMMY NOMINATED WRITER-PERFORMER JEFFREY SOLOMON IN CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SOLO
PLAY ABOUT A MOTHER'S COMING OUT JOURNEY AS THE PARENT OF A GAY CHILD, TO
APPEAR AT CELEBRATION THEATRE IN LOS ANGELES FOR TWO ONLY, JANUARY 19,20

Mother/SON No One Comes Out Alone

Emmy-nominated Writer-Performer Jeffrey Solomon created Mother/SON as a
tribute to his mother, whose struggle to accept and understand her gay son
–from first terrified visit to a support group for parents of gay children,
to marching with him in a pride parade – is chronicled in this poignant and
hilarious one-person play. The production was a critical hit in Chicago and
London and features Solomon as both mother and son in a performance the
Chicago Free Press calls So believable, we forget we're watching one
actor.

The performances are at Celebration Theatre, 7051B Santa Monica Blvd. Los
Angeles, Jan. 19th and 20th @ 8pm and are cosponsored by P.F.L.A.G. Los
Angeles (Parents and Friends and Lesbians and Gays), Congregations Beth
Chayim Chadashim and Kol Ami, and JQ International. The performances will
feature post show discussions with writer-performer Jeffrey Solomon. Tickets
available through Tix.com online or call 323-957-1884.

Mother/SON most recently played to critical acclaim in London's Off West End
at the New End Theatre and the Leeds International Jewish Performing Arts
Festival. The work has toured widely around the U.S. including the Meeting
House Theater Provincetown (MA), the Penguin Rep in Stony Point NY, Theatre
J. in Washington D.C., Princeton University, and Chicago's Bailiwick
Repertory, where his performance was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award
Citation for Best Actor. Mr. Solomon has also performed the play in India,
Sri Lanka and the Philippines. His one-man mock-umentary SANTA CLAUS IS
COMING OUT premiered at the Bailiwick Rep in Chicago before moving to New
York's Gene Frankel Playhouse, the Coast Playhouse in West Hollywood, 6th at
Penn in San Diego, the Warehouse in Washington, D.C., the Adrienne in
Philadelphia, and Queens Theatre in the Park. His solo works received top
honors at the 2002 Columbus National Gay and Lesbian Theater Festival,
winning the awards for Best of the Festival (SANTA CLAUS) and Best Solo
Performer, Best Playwriting and audience favorite for MOTHERSON. Jeffrey
Solomon created an issue-based Saturday morning television program on ABC
called CITYKIDS for Jim Henson Productions, and was a staff writer for the
series. His pilot episode was nominated for an Emmy Award as Best
Children's Special, and won an Ollie Award for excellence in Children's
Programming.

QUOTES FROM THE PRESS:

A powerful portrait of homosexuality and family...Solomon's
warm-hearted, semi-autobiographical tour-de-truth depicts the
comically complex and wryly evolving relationship of Mindy Levy, a
full-time Jewish mother, and her gay son Brad...as accessible as
enjoyable...a very fine dual performance, Solomon generously creates
mother and son from the outside in…Solomon captures and relishes the
moments of truth that connect loved ones as much as blood...powerfully
personal yet as universal as family values. –Chicago Tribune

Funny, Moving and at times simply breathtaking…Solomon richly
deserved his standing ovation…brings out the fundamental nature of the
mother's life with humor and deep understanding.
- Yorkshire Evening Post

Solomon is marvelous…demonstrates a roller coaster of emotions…funny,
poignant and appealing… this performance is a must-see. –Gay Chicago

A universally moving story of love and friendship. –In Theater

Wry, funny, affirming and authentic…Solomon conveys rich, believable
transformations in both mother and son…the honesty and an emotional
depth that Solomon instills throughout (not to mention his agility at
switching between a twenty something gay man and a forty something
straight woman) makes it a moving and worthwhile story.
-New City, Pick of the Week

Subtly varying his inflections and gestures Solomon plays both
characters, always to hilarious effect.
-Chicago Reader

MotherSON is the perfect play for skittish parents of gay and
lesbian children. It accords respect, dignity and understanding to a
parent's worries about the gay life, while at the same time providing
a road map for transforming fear into acceptance…Witty, warm and
honest…A gentle, moving story about transformation...Solomon is deeply
convincing in the dual role he has created

[LAAMN] Tues. Jan. 6: MOTH STORYSLAM (Theme: Dirt)

2009-01-02 Thread Will Coley
*MOTH STORYSLAM (Theme: Dirt) *
http://tinyurl.com/MOTHinLAJan09

* NEW LOCATION! *
 Tuesday January 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm *El Cid *
4212 Sunset Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90029
http://www.elcidla.com

The Moth believes that everyone has a story. The Moth created StorySLAM to
give those stories a forum.

Following the wild success of our Mainstage series, The Moth sought to
accommodate all the people who asked, When can I tell my story? and to
encourage those people who doubted they had a story worth telling. The Moth
StorySLAM provides a stage and a microphone, a theme to inspire and shape
the evening, a lively and supportive audience, and a host to guide the
festivities. Stories are limited to five minutes, and ten stories are heard.

The stories are scored by three teams of audience-member judges, and a
winner is announced at every SLAM. SLAM winners later face off in a Moth
GrandSLAM. Since 2001, the raucous, moving, funny and wild quilt of themed
stories that emerge during each show has kept the crowds coming back again
and again. SLAMs are now held on both coasts, in New York City and Los
Angeles!

How it Works:

7:00 PM *sign up to tell a story, volunteer to be on a judging team or just
sit back and listen. 7:30 (SHARP), we'll pick the first name and the show
will begin. Each teller will have 5 minutes to tell his or her tale. After
each story, the judges confer, and give a score. The teller with the highest
score becomes our StorySLAM winner. The winner will compete with the year's
other winners in our next GrandSLAM Championship. Eventually, LA and NY will
face-off!

Story Tips:

*Be Forewarned:*
The Moth is NOT a venue for readings, it is a venue for tellings. No notes,
papers, or cheat sheets are allowed on stage. Contestants are judged on
sticking to the five-minute time frame, sticking to the theme and having a
story that sticks—one that has a conflict and a resolution.

*Start in the action.*
Have a great first line that sets up the stakes or grabs attention.

*Not:* So I was thinking about climbing this mountain. But then I watched a
little TV and made a snack and took a nap and my mom called and vented about
her psoriasis then I did a little laundry (a whites load) (I lost another
sock, darn it!) and then I thought about it again and decided I'd climb the
mountain the next morning.

*Yes:* The mountain loomed before me. I had my hunting knife, some trail
mix and snow boots. I had to make it to the little cabin and start a fire
before sundown or freeze to death for sure.

*Steer clear of meandering endings.* They kill a story! Your last line
should be clear in your head before you start.

Know your story well enough so you can have fun! Watching you panic to think
of the next memorized line is harrowing for the audience. Make an outline,
memorize your bullet points and play with the details. Enjoy yourself.
Imagine you are a dinner party not a deposition.

*No standup routines please.*
The Moth LOVES funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny
STORIES.

*No rants:*
Take up this anger issue with your therapist, or skip therapy and shape your
anger into a story with some sort of resolution. (Stories = therapy!)

*No essays:*
Your eloquent musings are beautiful and look pretty on the page but unless
you can make them gripping and set up stakes, they won't work on stage.

[LAAMN] Next week in Los Angeles! Digital Cabaret Tuesday November 11

2008-11-08 Thread Will Coley
[image: digcab_pinkPURPsmaller.jpg picture by willcoleyCA]

Hey guys!

I'm writing to remind you that the next Digital Cabaret is next Tuesday
November 11th! This month's theme is MASQUERADE. Please spread the word!

We are super excited to have KNOMI perform for us in November! If you're not
familiar with their opera-pop performances, you're in for a real treat! I
kid you not, this is a one time only, unique, and cathartic experience, but
you must attend to experience it!! And, hey, if you're up for it, wear
yourHalloween costumesone last time :) Some of us will be in costume,
for sure. We've also got a
few additional surprises this month I'm s excited!

As always, if you're up for making a video on the theme MASQUERADE, or you
know someone who may be up for the task, please do so!

Also, we're currently looking for bands to headline the cabaret in the near
future, so do let us know if you have someone in mind.

We're still looking for short performances to take place in between videos
for November, so if you're interested in performing, or you know someone who
may be, please email me at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]http://us.mc301.mail.yahoo.com/mc/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

What we're looking for (on the theme MASQUERADE): skits, magicians, one-act
short plays, dancers, vaudeville or new-wave vaudeville-type acts,
funspoken word.
You decide: just make it fun, creative, and engaging :)

Looking forward to seeing you all next week!

DIGITAL CABARET, a mixed-media event that combines participant-generated
digital video and live musical performances. Theme: Masquerade

TUESDAY, November 11, 2008

M.C: Brian Finkelstein
Performer: KNOMI, http://www.myspace.com/klausknomi

8pm sign-up * $7 at the door

@ Tangier Lounge
2138 Hillhurst Avenue at Los Feliz Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA
Phone: (323) 666-8666

How it Works: 8:00 PM *sign up to show your video, volunteer to be on a
judging team or just sit back and watch. 8:30 (SHARP), we'll pick the first
name and the show will begin. After each screening, the judges confer, and
give a score. The video with the highest score becomes our Cabaret winner
and will be announced by the evening's performer.

Video tips: Prepare a video (not exceeding four minutes) on the theme
Masquerade. Any genre is ok but it should be compelling. The digital cabaret
welcomes experimental video art, music videos, and conventional narratives.
