Register here: http://lamediareform.wordpress.com/mediasummit2012/ Making Your Own Media: “Media for the 99%” Summit http://lamediareform.wordpress.com/ The media is no longer that “black and white and read all over” object the neighbor kid threw on your parents’ lawn every morning, right? No, now it’s something people all around you are creating for themselves — on computer networks, with flipcams and smart phones, on the radio — to advance their causes, to help guide their communities to a brighter tomorrow, to better our world. You’re already doing some of that yourself, too, right? So join us this Saturday at the “4th Annual Media Reform Summit: Media for the 99%” to learn how to do even more. We’ll have headliners Robert Scheer, the renowned LA Timesman and Truthdig editor, and Craig Aaron, Free Press CEO and President. We’ve got a dynamite “The Future of News Is Now” media panel with KCET’s Val Zavala, KPCC’s Sharon McNary, KPFK’s Maria Armoudian, and XM Public Radio’s Jesse Thorn. And then, to get you waist deep in the big media yourself, we’re presenting ten workshops that will give you hands-on tutoring on how to effect change in your community by creating your own media. Want to know how to create your own online magazine, or become a progressive culture critic, or livestream events as they happen? We can help. Want to know how to post multimedia stories onto the Web with your mobile phone, or how to make a powerful video, or how to represent your cause effectively with the mainstream media? We’ve got you covered. Check out the list of 10 workshops below, organized in two sets of five, and sign up for the event. WHEN: Saturday, March 3 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. WHERE: Occidental College, 200 Johnson Hall RSVP: Here. AGENDA: Here. See you Saturday! Citizen Journalism on the Net: LA Progressive founders will show step-by-step how they created an online magazine, including author recruitment, website development, and advertising and sponsorship development. The LA Progressive can serve as a roadmap for citizen journalists elsewhere to create their own similar efforts. With Sharon Kyle and Dick Price Food Trucks: From Roach Coach to Pop-Culture Boom! This panel discusses how citizen journalists have captured some of the tensest, politically charged, and controversial moments of the food truck movement in L.A., and across the country. With Erin Glenn and Michele Gran How to be an Advocate in the Big Media World: This panel will talk about how to stand up for the media you want to see by being a kick-ass advocate for community-based media. Everything from keeping the big guys accountable to maintaining real alternatives in radio, television and on the web. With Tracy Rosenberg and Inez González Creative Commons and Other Ways Internet Law Empowers Media Reformers. This workshop will be a overview of Internet-related legal concepts that can actually help and empower media reformers. The goal is to give the audience an understanding of what they CAN do when re-purposing content, responding to censorship threats from third parties, and controlling the way they disseminate their messages online. Shaun Spalding and Art Neill Video the Vote 2012: Keeping Watch on Democracy: In preparation for the 2012 elections, this workshop will look at Video the Votes reports from previous elections to give an overview of voter suppression in action, and discuss covering this years elections with more developed technology, including portable streaming video. With John Wellington Enis Occupy The Media: The Process, Practice, Publication, Posting and Broadcasting of a People’s Critique of Popular Culture: How can a people’s “pop culture-ologist” go about getting his/her vision out to the public? The workshop includes practical steps to put theory into practice in various media formats: online, social media, print, radio, TV, etc. The goal: How to provide people’s coverage of the arts for the 99%. With Ed Rampell How Insight Out News Covered Occupy LA: Margot Paez will discuss her work with Insight Out News, interspersing her presentation with demonstrations of videos she created in her coverage of Occupy LA, discussions of the tools and production processes she employed, and plenty of time for audience members to ask questions and share their own videography experiences. With Margot Paez Mobile Voices: We’ll show participants how to post multimedia stories directly to the web from a cell phone, and we’ll talk about how this can be used as part of popular communication and as an organizing tool. We will read our reality

[LAAMN] Audio reflections from Transom #RadioStory Workshop
Transom Story Workshop – Class of Fall 2011 http://transom.org/?p=21825 Intro from Jay Allison: For seven weeks, students from all over the US (plus Canada and Australia) came to Woods Hole to immerse themselves in radio. They were led by Rob Rosenthal, with help from all of us at Transom, WCAI, and visiting friends—Ira Glass, John Barth, Kelly McEvers, and many others. They were beginners when they arrived, some with no experience at all, but they all left with completed radio pieces good enough for broadcast on our station and nationally. They lived and ate together. They worked on their stories until dawn. They actually looked different when they left, filled with new energy. They were a wonderful, coherent, lively group of people and we loved having them here on Cape Cod. Audiences are already benefitting from the stories they told. Take a look and listen. The students and Rob are around to answer any questions you may have. [LAAMN] Let's Talk About Racial Profiling: Conversations on Facebook!
Join the conversations on Facebook all this week! http://on.fb.me/avNNel -- Forwarded message -- From: Tong Lee - Rights Working Group t...@rightsworkinggroup.org Over this past year, community organizations and individuals concerned about the increasing incidents of the degrading and unconstitutional practice of racial profiling have joined the Racial Profiling: Face the Truth campaign (http://bit.ly/4AOgwX) and held small Conversations and large events to educate people about the pervasiveness of the problem. These Conversations have led to over 5,000 signatures gathered for a petition to the DOJ calling for a revision to their guidance on racial profiling (http://bit.ly/fiB4JK), postcards to Congress to co-sponsor the End Racial Profiling Act, and strengthening local campaigns on stopping racial profiling. Join us from December 6 – 10th and host a Conversation. We've revised the Toolkit (http://bit.ly/f8qqL4) and included new tools and resources. If you haven't had a chance to to host a Conversation this year, please consider bringing your friends and allies together to learn about the effects of racial profiling on our communities and to engage them in your local campaign or the national movement to change policies that violate our human and constitutional rights. Educating the public on racial profiling is an important step towards ending the degrading practice. Conversations will lead up to Human Rights Day on December 10th, which is an opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of standing up for our human rights. For more information about hosting a Face the Truth Conversation and to download the Toolkit, visit http://www.rightsworkinggroup.org/conversation-project. If you are hosting a Conversation or event, please register your event (http://bit.ly/dRDMfs) so we can get materials to you in a timely manner and to show our strength. If you are unable to host a Conversation, join us the week of December 6th on FACEBOOK for an online-Conversation http://on.fb.me/avNNel. Be sure to become a Fan of RWG if you haven't already to participate in the discussion. [LAAMN] Fwd: [DWN] Press Release: DWN Day of Action and Report Card on ICE Detention Reform
-- Forwarded message -- From: Ana Carrion acarr...@detentionwatchnetwork.org Date: Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 7:46 AM [image: cid:image002.png@01CB64A2.D0ABCA30] October 6, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jacqueline Esposito, Detention Watch Network, 202-393-1044 ext. 223, jespos...@detentionwatchnetwork.org or Silky Shah, Detention Watch Network 347-243-8743, ss...@detentionwatchnetwork.org * Detention Watch Network calls for Dignity, Not Detention on One-year Anniversary of Obama Administrations Detention Reform Announcement * *Groups demand the Obama Administration put an end to human rights violations in the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system* * * *Washington, D.C. * Human rights groups around the country participated in a National Day of Action organized by Detention Watch Network to mark the one-year anniversary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Immigration Customs and Enforcements (ICE) 2009 detention reform announcement. The National Day of Action is part of the, *Dignity, Not Detention: Preserving Human Rights and Restoring Justice*, campaign led by the Detention Watch Network, which calls for an end to the human rights abuses in detention centers, the restoration of due process in the enforcement of immigration laws, and the implementation of cost saving alternatives. As part of the Day of Action, Detention Watch Network released a joint report, *Year One Report Card: Human Rights the Obama Administrations Immigration Detention Reforms*, it co-authored with National Immigrant Justice Center and the Midwest Coalition for Human Rights. The report reveals that many of those detained still suffer egregious human rights violations while in custody. Immigrants continue to be jailed for months or even years under substandard conditions. Mistreatment by guards, grossly deficient medical care, use of solitary of confinement, and limited access to family and counsel remain persistent problems. Last year, ICE promised to move away from the sprawling network of jails and prisons it uses to detain immigrants toward a less punitive model and take concrete steps to improve conditions of confinement for the nearly 400,000 people detained each year. But according to the report, the agencys reform agenda has been compromised by a growing detention population, internal opposition to reform by local ICE officials, and the expansion of ICE enforcement programs like 287(g), Secure Communities, and the Criminal Alien Program (CAP) that rely on local law enforcement agencies to channel more and more immigrants into the detention system. What the Year One Report Card shows is that the steps the Obama Administration has taken this year are not enough to bring about meaningful changes in the lives of immigrants, said Emily Tucker, Policy and Advocacy Director at Detention Watch Network. Until ICE limits detention to only those rare cases where it has been shown necessary to ensure public safety, the human rights crisis in the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system will persist. Participants in the National Day of Action are calling for the restoration of human rights within the detention system, and an end to programs that indiscriminately channel immigrants into the detention and deportation system. Coordinated actions occurred across the country in cities including Austin, TX, Freehold, NJ, Minneapolis, MN, Seattle, WA and Trenton, NJ. For more information visit www.dignitynotdetention.org. The report is available at http://www.detentionwatchnetwork.org/ The *Detention Watch Network* is a national coalition of organizations and individuals working to educate the public and policy makers about the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system and advocate for reform so that all who come to our shores receive fair and humane treatment. *For more information visit* www.detentionwatchnetwork.org # # # [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] --- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --- Unsubscribe: mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com --- Subscribe: mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com --- Digest: mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com --- Help: mailto:laamn-ow...@egroups.com?subject=laamn --- Post: mailto:la...@egroups.com --- Archive1: http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn --- Archive2:

[LAAMN] Wed 9/22 in LA: Markos Moulitsas Speaking in LA
Markos Moulitsas Speaking in LA September 22nd http://www.laprogressive.com/the-media/markos-moulitsas-speaking/ Markos Moulitsas, a driving force in new media and founder of The Daily Kos, will speak and sign his ground-breaking book at a free reading to support the LA Media Reform Group’s annual media summit to be held February 26, 2011. The Daily Kos is among the largest and most influential progressive online political communities. Known for his biting wit, unwavering gaze, and willingness to take on all sides of the political spectrum, Moulitsas is a regular on cable news shows such as Meet the Press, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and Real Time with Bill Maher and is a columnist for The Hill. He was recently banned from MSNBC for a Twitter fight with right-wing host Joe Scarborugh. In his just released American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin, and Power Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right, Markos Moulitsas—known to millions as simply “Kos”—argues that America’s radical right shares the same traits as our main international enemy—Islamic radicalism. Both extremist groups favor theocracy, curtail civil rights, repress women and revile homosexuality, subvert science and education, and revere force over diplomacy. “In this day and age of gut-reacting, gutter-fighting world of hyperbole and rhetoric, it is time for critical thinkers to unite and support others who commit so much time to reporting facts.” – Tapia Martinez – LA Media Reform Group; Co-Founder. “It isn’t possible to understand American politics now without understanding the worldview and arguments of Markos Moulitsas. If you still believe the Beltway caricature of the squishy, compromising, conciliatory American left, American Taliban should disabuse you of that notion.” — Rachel Maddow Kos’s earlier publications include the critically acclaimed Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics (2006) and Taking on the System: Rules for Radical Change in a Digital Era (2008). Details: Wednesday, September 22, 7 p.m. Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Westminster Chapel 3300 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles *Admission is free with RSVP in advance to la...@commoncause.org *Attendees are encouraged to purchase the author’s book at the event The LA Media Reform group is sponsoring this event in collaboration with the LA Progressive, Alliance Hollywood, and Netroots Nation. The Los Angeles Media Reform Group focuses on holding news outlets accountable to the public interest and encouraging citizens to create their own media, and to be critical consumers of the mass media. Its next annual workshop will be Saturday, February 26th, 2011, at Occidental College. The LA Progressive is a two-year-old electronic magazine that comments daily on issues of political, social, and cultural consequence to progressives in Los Angeles and everywhere. Alliance Hollywood is a social advocacy group that utilizes the voice, media and financial power of the entertainment industry to fight corporate interest groups on Capitol Hill. Netroots Nation amplifies progressive voices by providing an online and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more effective in using technology to influence the public debate. Within that campus, we strengthen community, inspire action and serve as an incubator for progressive ideas that challenge the status quo and ultimately affect change in the public sphere. Questions? QUOTES FROM THE PRESS: A powerful portrait of homosexuality and family...Solomon's warm-hearted, semi-autobiographical tour-de-truth depicts the comically complex and wryly evolving relationship of Mindy Levy, a full-time Jewish mother, and her gay son Brad...as accessible as enjoyable...a very fine dual performance, Solomon generously creates mother and son from the outside in Solomon captures and relishes the moments of truth that connect loved ones as much as blood...powerfully personal yet as universal as family values. Chicago Tribune Funny, Moving and at times simply breathtaking Solomon richly deserved his standing ovation brings out the fundamental nature of the mother's life with humor and deep understanding. - Yorkshire Evening Post Solomon is marvelous demonstrates a roller coaster of emotions funny, poignant and appealing this performance is a must-see. Gay Chicago A universally moving story of love and friendship. [LAAMN] Tues. Jan. 6: MOTH STORYSLAM (Theme: Dirt)
*MOTH STORYSLAM (Theme: Dirt) * http://tinyurl.com/MOTHinLAJan09 * NEW LOCATION! * Tuesday January 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm *El Cid * 4212 Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90029 http://www.elcidla.com The Moth believes that everyone has a story. The Moth created StorySLAM to give those stories a forum. Following the wild success of our Mainstage series, The Moth sought to accommodate all the people who asked, When can I tell my story? and to encourage those people who doubted they had a story worth telling. The Moth StorySLAM provides a stage and a microphone, a theme to inspire and shape the evening, a lively and supportive audience, and a host to guide the festivities. Stories are limited to five minutes, and ten stories are heard. The stories are scored by three teams of audience-member judges, and a winner is announced at every SLAM. SLAM winners later face off in a Moth GrandSLAM. Since 2001, the raucous, moving, funny and wild quilt of themed stories that emerge during each show has kept the crowds coming back again and again. SLAMs are now held on both coasts, in New York City and Los Angeles! How it Works: 7:00 PM *sign up to tell a story, volunteer to be on a judging team or just sit back and listen. 7:30 (SHARP), we'll pick the first name and the show will begin. Each teller will have 5 minutes to tell his or her tale. After each story, the judges confer, and give a score. The teller with the highest score becomes our StorySLAM winner. The winner will compete with the year's other winners in our next GrandSLAM Championship. Eventually, LA and NY will face-off! Story Tips: *Be Forewarned:* The Moth is NOT a venue for readings, it is a venue for tellings. No notes, papers, or cheat sheets are allowed on stage. Contestants are judged on sticking to the five-minute time frame, sticking to the theme and having a story that sticksone that has a conflict and a resolution. *Start in the action.* Have a great first line that sets up the stakes or grabs attention. *Not:* So I was thinking about climbing this mountain. But then I watched a little TV and made a snack and took a nap and my mom called and vented about her psoriasis then I did a little laundry (a whites load) (I lost another sock, darn it!) and then I thought about it again and decided I'd climb the mountain the next morning. *Yes:* The mountain loomed before me. I had my hunting knife, some trail mix and snow boots. I had to make it to the little cabin and start a fire before sundown or freeze to death for sure. *Steer clear of meandering endings.* They kill a story! Your last line should be clear in your head before you start. Know your story well enough so you can have fun! Watching you panic to think of the next memorized line is harrowing for the audience. Make an outline, memorize your bullet points and play with the details. Enjoy yourself. Imagine you are a dinner party not a deposition. *No standup routines please.* The Moth LOVES funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny STORIES. *No rants:* Take up this anger issue with your therapist, or skip therapy and shape your anger into a story with some sort of resolution. (Stories = therapy!) *No essays:* Your eloquent musings are beautiful and look pretty on the page but unless you can make them gripping and set up stakes, they won't work on stage.
