[lace] RE: ufo's - Acid burn? and welcome to Jenny

2005-03-01 Thread Helen Bell
Liz in London (as opposed to Liz in Melbourne :-) ):

I know what you mean about gathering up the scarf and tying it. This
works with a decent sized square table cloth around larger pillows too.
(kind of hard to do with circular or rectangular cloths). I have a
pillow that has no bag, so when it has to be moved, I use a large square
cloth and tie the opposite corners together. Works well, and has a
'handle' for carrying.

And to Jenny, the Newbie from Kunanurra - welcome! I see you've had
some very sound advice offered, so I won't offer any more, except to say
start simple and work up - and even though it's boring and laborious at
first, it is actually good to trace, prick, and draw the lines out on
your prickings. I think it helps to learn all of the basics of
lacemaking - not just the stiches and other techniques (sewings, starts
and finishes, etc). Pricking patterns from scratch is a way to get an
understanding and appreciation of the other parts of lacemaking, and
there will be times where you will find it helps you sort out a pattern,
or true it up. There is also a place for the quick and dirty -
photocopy, cut it out, stick it on card and cover with contact.
Accurate pricking will help you achieve accurate lace - more so
important with the laces with very geometric grounds, like torchon, and
bucks point. Most of all, have fun, and enjoy the new challenges and
friends awaiting you.

Cheers,
Helen, Aussie in springy Denver.

[lace] Swiss "stamp" raffle results

2005-03-01 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
 Gentle Spiders,
Today must be the day for raffle results - first Clay, now me :)
I wish I had 32 of the embroidered stamps to give away; every time I do
a raffle, I swear it's the last time, because there are always more
people disappointed, than there are happy ones...

Anyway. The 32 names were duly transcribed, and the pencil stabbed
blindly, through
JANE BAWN's name. Congratulations Jane, sorry everyone else, and thank
you for participating.

Jane, I'll need your s-mail address.

off today, even though I had to get the DH to drive me to PO (I'm not
putting a high-powered check in my outdoors mailbox, where anyone can
pick it up), because my car is still snowed under.

[lace] Clay Cross, Derbyshire, Lace Day

2005-03-01 Thread Stitchnowl
Hello all,

Just to let you know that the Lace and Textile Day is this Saturday at Clay
Cross Adult Education Centre, Derbyshire. It opens at 10.00 am and has a talk
during the morning, loads of suppliers of threads, patterns, books, bobbins,
etc etc. There are two taster sessins in the afternoon but I believe that
these are really full so if you are interested then it would be best to
telephone
the Centre to book a place.

For those who haven't been before, there is a lovely coffee lounge and there
are also demonstrations, raffle and a chance to meet up with old friends from
various classes around the country - lots of folks do travel about I know.

Well, I'll be there as I've a few projects to purchase the threads and I'm
always on the lookout for something new in the patterns on offer.

Hope some might be able to visit and if you do please come and say "Hi" as I
shall be in the top hall in the afternoon with some of the lace which has been
made by folks from our lace making classes.

Regards to all,

Babs (Chesterfield)

I just checked the web and Thumbelina still carries Danish flower thread. This
is a store in Solvang, California, originally settled by Danes and a tourist
spot. The URL is

Note that the Danish Handcraft Guild (real) Danish flower thread has a
different numbering system from the DMC flower thread. Thumbelina has a color
card available for USD 10.

If you use plastic film to cover your prickings try to get hold of the non
reflective kind its easier on the eye when you are looking at it for long

If you can't get the non-reflective type just rub the other one over with a
metal scouring pad, it dull it sufficiently.

Dear Bridget,

Firstly, if you do a search for "Danish Flower Thread, England" on your
computer, you will receive some listings.

Since you are in England, I went to my magazines from your country - for
advertising information. In "Stitch", which is published by The Embroiderers'
Guild of your country, I found a display ad for the following:

Wye Needlecraft, Ltd.
www.wye.co.uk
or e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Under their thread listings was "Danish Flower Thread". When I clicked on it
- it went to a rejection page of a business that appeared to be in Denmark,
where (presumably) Wye goes to import the thread to your country.

So, have a look to see what I mean, then you could write to their e-mail
address for more info as to where you can see prices, colors, etc.
Incidentally,
the ad implies they have lacemaking supplies!

In future, I should think anyone could go to a shop that sells magazines and
look at the display ads in needlework publications - for leads to in-country
suppliers.

Other options for linen embroidery threads would be to do a search to find a
web site or e-mail address for The Embroiderers' Guild-England or the Royal
School of Needlework. Either should be able to refer you to an appropriate
supplier, simply based on the large number of ads in their publications.

RE: [lace] Pricking card (was Hello from a newbie)

2005-03-01 Thread Jane Bawn
Hello Jenny and welcome

I think you have discovered by now there is a wealth of very experienced
lacemakers here to help you. They truly are amazing in the collective
knowledge they have so don't be afraid to to ask questions.

I only have one point to add

> > Pricking card

If you use plastic film to cover your prickings try to get hold of the non
reflective kind its easier on the eye when you are looking at it for long
periods. Personally I didn't use plastic film for a long time, I pricked
straight on to the card from my paper pattern and then just used the card,
after all if you are only going to use the pattern for a short period and
then never again it is pointless going to all that trouble. It is usually
only of benefit if you intend using the pattern again and again because you
like it so much or because you are using it to make yards of lace or
possibly because there is a lot of detail on the paper pattern that you want
to retain for working with, although we transferred the cloth trail in
pencil on to the card and then went over it with a permanent ink pen, doing
this helps to concentrate the mind on the direction of the cloth trail and
you make less mistakes that way (well that's the theory) :-)

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you even more.

Best regards

It is my understanding that the original Danish Flower Thread was produced
by the Danish Handcraft Guild. They didn't copyright the name "Danish Flower
Thread," and so other companies (DMC) started producing a similar product by
the same name. The original thread is still available, in many colors.

The only shop I know of that sells it is Threadneedle Street, in Issaquah,
WA (a short 20-minute ride from my home!). This shop is primarily geared to
needlework, but the owner, Denise Davis, has a plethora of fibers, and it is
a delight to visit there. Happily, Denise ships all over the world.

Here's the web site and how to find this thread:

Click on "threads"
Then, along the left side, click on "Flower Thread, Danish"

Re: [lace] Hello to a newbie in Oz

2005-03-01 Thread Maureen Harvey
Hi to all fellow spiders,
Ref "pricking card discussion" when I first started to make lace we were
told that if you could not afford (or get hold of) proper pricking card, to
use any firm card covered with sticky plastic covering and if you could only
find the shiny type use a plastic pan scrub (the kind with sponge backing)
and rub off all the shine from the plastic, this stops the shine distorting
the pattern. I used this several times when necessary and found no trouble
with sewings.

Also looking forward to Norfolk Lacemakers Laceday on Saturday hope to see
all my lace friends there.

and then covering a pricking with film is very easy to do but I really come
unstuck when doing sewings. I use a lazy susan, it might be different with a
crochet hook, and almost always end up with the business end stuck in the
pin hole and making a mess. Pricking card being so much sturdier makes
sewings a lot "cleaner" and easier. This is more important for sectional
laces with a lot of sewings.

Re: [lace] DMC linen floss

2005-03-01 Thread Bridget Marrow
Good to see that DMC are reviving an old idea.
I have some (very) old skeins of linen floss that I bought years ago from
someone who was having a turnout. They are labelled Knox's Linen Floss -
size 3. And yes, I have used them for lace, usually as gimps with a more
conventional linen thread. As you would expect with floss, they are quite
lightly twisted.
You do need to take extra care when winding onto a bobbin from a skein
rather than a spool.
I look forward to seeing the new DMC range.

disappeared now.
