[lace] Recent Lace Exhibitions

2007-10-23 Thread kudrnova
Hello Lacespiders,

I'd like to draw your attention to some news
http://lacespider.blog.cz/rubriky/in-english and lace exhibitions that I
have attended and from which I have made some picture report. In half of
October, lace days in Nordhalben
http://lacespider.blog.cz/0710/krajkarska-vystava-v-nordhalbenu in Germany
were held. This was connected with the exhibition of bobbin lace on fairy
tales motives and with the exhibition of Mrs. Ulrike Löhr, an excellent
lacemaker. She has personally given us a commentary to her lace, which was
really fascinating, each lace has it's own history connected with the
inspiration and a story. So she told us about a lace which was inspired by a
psalm in Bible - about hope and light in the dark places, another one inspired
by a poem about a last autumn rose, so beautiful and live and so near to
death, lace mirroring the water surface, another lace representing the soul,
for some time visible in the world, then dissapearing and again appearing like
threads, that are weaving in and out. Really breathtaking thing! You can see
some photos
http://lacespider.blog.cz/galerie/co-jsem-navstivila/nordhalben-2007 from
these exhibitions.

In Prague there was a vernissage
http://lacespider.blog.cz/galerie/co-jsem-navstivila/vernisaz-vystavy-anny-h
alikove of an exhibition named Lace jewelry
http://lacespider.blog.cz/0710/vystava-anny-halikove-krajkove-sperky by a
czech lacemaker Anna Halíková. Her jewelry is really original and wonderful.
Another exhibition named Wonder Tracks of Threads
http://lacespider.blog.cz/galerie/co-jsem-navstivila/kouzelne-cesty-niti
was organized by Inspiration Club http://www.klubinspirace.cz/ in Prague
and members of this club exhibited their lace here.

From my own recent lace work I put a free pattern of a bracelet
http://lacespider.blog.cz/0710/podvinek-ke-stazeni-naramek on my pages and
in the gallery a series of lace jewelry with beads
http://lacespider.blog.cz/galerie/krajka-a-koralky-lace-and-beads , inspired
by a core of trees.

Happy lacemaking to all,

Lucy Kudrnova, Prague

[lace] California fires

2007-10-23 Thread Tess Parrish
This from Marji this morning for those who may be worrying about the
situation in California. She lives near San Diego where things are
pretty bad. I doubt that she will be getting email for a bit, though
I could be wrong, but we can certainly hope that things calm down soon.

We had a mandatory evacuation late this afternoon and I am at my
son's home. Even here the air is thick with smoke and there are
ashes everywhere. I don't think my home is in danger, but one can
never tell as with these high winds (75 mph) the sparks can travel
great distances in short times. So for now, I will stay where I am
as they have air conditioning and air filters to keep the smoke down.

Tess ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) in Maine, where we haven't even yet had to
have a fire in the woodstove--no frost to date, very late for us.

[lace] Puncetto help

2007-10-23 Thread Avital
Hi, spiders,

After watching the Puncetto video on YouTube several times I've become
obsessed with trying to make some (no, I'm not going to try to produce
3 yards of 8-inch wide lace by candlelight!). My only resource is a
copy of The Gentle Arts, which doesn't give advanced instructions,
just a few simple edgings. I haven't been successful in finding
instructions on the Web or in the lace and weaving archive. Would
anyone be able to help me find resources or give me some pointers?

Thanks very much,

Avital,
who is amassing a respectable collection of bits of mangled thread

Maybe this will help, not sure how advanced - how-to here for written
instructions and some blurry photos :-S
http://cena.ladefoged.org/patterns/puncetto.htm

and some fine images of the lace here:

and a good picture of position of the hands, down the page here (plus other
excellent textile craft photos)

RE: [lace] California fires

2007-10-23 Thread Sue
Tess, I know that I send all spiders hope that all will be well, after
watching the news of the fires I just sat there thinking what do you do
in that situation, how do you make up your mind what to take and what to
leave when you evacuate, I have just too many things in my house that I
love (including all my lace things, bobbins etc.) not to mention years
of family photographs. I know I sometimes complain that here in the UK
we rarely seem to get nice sunny weather but we do not get the extremes
either so I had better remember what my mum always told me count your
blessings

Avital,
The Anchor manual of embroidery has a whole chapter devoted to Puncetto
Needle lace. I did a class in Puncetto at the first Italia Invita Congress
and really enjoyed it. I am happy to try and answer any questions you have.

when you evacuate,

Hi Sue

We lost our house in bushfires here in Australia nearly 5 years ago so our
thoughts have been with the many people that have lost their homes in the
fires in the US. We were away when the fires came through Canberra but our
eldest son who was 17 was at home on his own - and though we wish we had been
here to try to defend our home and to collect things to take with us - the
most important thing was our son and that he was OK and that he safely went to
his grandparents place away from the fires. The one thing that still really
upsets me about the fires was that the local government 'didn't want to panic
people' so they didn't warn us that the fires were expected to be on the edge
of the city by the end of the day and our son had to face it on his own!!

BUT people were fantastic - I think of all the Arachne members everytime I do
my lace and the beautiful bobbins, threads, books, equipment... that you sent
to me after our fires.

It is people that count and things can be replaced or remade - even things
with memories attached - but do keep a copy of important things like
documents, photos, computer backups off site!! And keep an eye on your house
and contents insurance!!
