[lace] Lace making equipment? 19th Century on ebay

2009-05-06 Thread Jean Nathan
I did suggest to the seller that they were football boot studs, but someone
else beat me to it - mine is the second note. I wouldn't say they were 19th
century - my husband and brothers used to hammer them into their football
boots probably until the mid 50s. In fact we found a bag of them in my FIL's
garden shed when we cleared the house after he died. Put them in the trash.

At least the seller happy being corrected.

Try just: www.snowgoose.cc and then click catalog from there. The site
is still there but has been redone apparently. To see pictures of
items, you have to put them in the shopping basket, retrieve the
basket, and then click on the code for the item. Seems the site needs
a bit of work

[lace] Miss Channer's Mat

2009-05-06 Thread Jean Nathan
Have to add my congratulations to David - it really does look something in
black.

Clay wrote:

just get a bigger pillow!! ; )

I gave my 24 inch pillow away because I couldn't reach across it. Problem is
that I can't get anything that big close enough - mainly due to what looks
like a pillow already between it and my waist! Don't think there's any
chance of losing weight until I reach the wizened old lady stage of life, so
the best type of pillow for a large project for me, if I didn't want to keep
moving the lace, would be the 9 separate all-moveable block type which
allows movement of the finished part of the lace in all directions while
still pinned down until it reaches the edge. David uses that type of pillow
for his 'lace desk', but his blocks are 12 inches square as opposed to the
more common portable one with 5 and a half inch squares.

Fw: [lace] larger pillows?

2009-05-06 Thread Sue
We made a large block pillow which is slopped in to fit closer to me and
inside my chair arms and because it has the moveable blocks I can keep the
working area closer to me (short arms:-). We made it with an 11 inch square
than can be used for a one piece of lace, with a couple of the half blocks
or 4 of the half blocks but still 11 inch wide. It works well. I need my
sloping table to sit it on, cant work with it completely on my lap when out
and about, but it has many great uses.

I have read bits about the all moveable blocks and think that sounds like a
great way to get use of all the blocks.

A larger pillow is definitely advantageous! Clay is right on there. I
took a lace class from Geraldine Stott once, and we asked her about
working with a lot of bobbins; her advice was just that...get a bigger
pillow. When probed as to how big you might need, she said she had one
that she had to hold slanted to the side to get it through a door!

I have two larger pillows, but use them as little as possible. I find
stretching over them when I start a pattern is very hard on my shoulders and
arms, so I now prefer smaller pieces or edgings which I can make on smaller
pillows or block pillows.

I would like to compliment you on the lovely lace and also on finishing it
so quickly. Thanks for the info on the thread etc.Can you please tell
me if you worked the mat at the original size or reduce it. If you reduced
it then by how much. It is also referred to as Miss Channer Chantilly
style.Did you use chantilly techniques or still use the Bucks ones, or a
mix of both.I am sorry if you have been asked these questions before but
I only came onto Arachne at Easter. What lace do you plan to do next?
I guess it will need some thought, or do you have a list as long as your
arm. I know I do.

Dear Friends,

Could I congratulate David on yet another excellent piece of lace.

And may I also publicly acknowledge Julian's promptness and
efficiency in posting all my photos. Miss Channer went to the framers
this morning.

I can now tell you that she took 158 pairs of bobbins plus 14 pairs
for gimps. I used some very beautiful black silk which was sent to me
some years ago by Eva from Spain (about equal to a Pipers 2/20) and a
rayon for the gimp.

I began the piece on Feb 12th and finished it on May 4th. There were
some challenges, particularly around the half way mark when all the
bobbins were on board. If I ever make her again I think I would make
the sprays of tallies as raised tallies as on the original rather
than as I have done them here. Other than that I'm fairly pleased
with the result. She'll be mounted on a pale green board with bottle
green surround and then a narrow wooden frame with some gilt highlights.

David has just signed off arachne for 10 days or do to go walkabout in the
Australian outback, which he does each year. Usually he comes back with
photos of him sitting in a stream making lace.

However he will not be around to receive the message you just sent and
answer its questions.

I recall him saying he had reduced the mat (but I don't recall by how much).
If you look in the Arachne archives you should find his response to
Chantilly / Bucks techniques. That was a fairly recent question, I think.

[lace] contact paper hint

2009-05-06 Thread Janice Blair
I posted recently about getting some clear shelf paper from the local dollar
tree store.  I also meant to post a hint that I think came from Ulrike
Voelker.  When you cut the film to cover your pricking, cut it about half an
inch wider all round.  After you have stuck your pricking onto it, you can
place it on your pillow and it will hold in place, no pins required.  After
finishing a piece of lace I was going to mount to matt board and frame, I just
placed the pricking in the position I needed and the film was still sticky
enough to hold it in place while I made the appropriate sewing holes, but came
away without having any problems.

I keep finishing projects but even though I have a workshop coming in June at
the LACE lace day, I still feel the need to keep filling my pillows.

[lace] Thai silk

2009-05-06 Thread Janice Blair
An English friend just got back from a vacation in Thailand and she sent me
two spools of silk from the Hua Hin Silk Village.  It seems to be very fine,
glossy, spun silk but has no size or markings on the cone shaped spools which
are about 3 inches tall.  Has anyone come across this silk before and have any
idea of the size?

My friend writes I picked up a packet of 12 spools thinking that made a
lovely gift.  The shop assistant said, Excuse me Madam but you are aware that
the price stated is for one spool!!?  I treasure your friendship but my pocket
doesn't meet my desires.  Hope you can use them.  It was interesting viewing
their little museum - live silkworm to finished product

Now I am looking for a pattern that I can make and send to her as a thank
you.  Isn't it nice that some friends appreciate our art.

Trillium Lace lists a Thai silk, pure filament, 120 weight but I don't
think this will help you much. How does your silk compare to another thread
- e.g. a fine cotton you might have?so you could make a comparison based on
a known measurement (supposing you have Brenda's thread book?).

Thanks, Janice for the earlier post...I got a couple of rolls last week
when I spotted a Dollar Tree store near my Dad when I went to take him
to an appointment. And you are right...I remember Ulrike suggesting
the pinless pricking hint you mentioned. One other point she
suggested, which back then I wasn't always doing, is to round all the
edges of the pricking (or at least the matte film). Squared or pointed
edges snag threads whereas rounded edges do not.

[lace] Big pillows

2009-05-06 Thread Sue Fink
Like so many of you I too, like to work on larger pillows and find I don't
have any difficulty with the lace being out of reach because I work on
engineering felt which I can pick up and move to the exact position I need.
Sometimes I work on a very large piece of felt and sometimes on a patchwork
of them, just depends on what I am doing, but it does make moving around the
pillow easy and I don't have to stretch right across to the back where it
can be out of reach!!

I also like the hint from Devon about leaving a clear area around the
pricking when using contact paper and also the one about rounding the edges.
Just so much valuable information comes off this list - it is never ending!!
Thanks everyone.

Sincerely,

Sue Fink,
