Re: [lace] Shawl finished

2011-12-17 Thread Maureen Bromley

Hi

The shawl is beautiful, even more beautiful when you see it in 'the flesh'
so to speak She has made a very good job of it. Agnes brought it to my
house on Thursday evening to show everyone it before she gives it to her
daughter for Christmas.

Re: [lace] Shawl finished

2011-12-17 Thread Brenda Paternoster
I made myself a very large roller pillow to work large scale patterns on.

I used a roll of the insulating stuff for putting underneath wallpaper, it's
like a thin sheet of styrofoam. I think it was called Warmaline or something
like that. It came from a DIY store. That was the roller and for the rest of
the pillow I used three slabs of polystyrene glued together and hacked about
with a carving knife. A job best done outside as the bits get everywhere! After
that it was just a case of manipulating the cover fabric to fit. I have made
several scarves, a sweater in strips and currently have a table runner on it
and the roller is holding up well.

[lace] lace shawl

2011-12-17 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Thank you Agnes for posting pics of your shawl! WOW--I'm sure your
daughter will be thrilled!! Did you say this came in a kit? Would you be
willing to share the name of the manufacturer and/or some detail on the amount
of yarn required to make the pattern--yards/metres? Although I'm not fond of
Torchon, it is a very effective technique in this scale. I recall I read
somewhere that a scarf made in Torchon would use about 30% less yarn than a
knitted one of similar size density. Would you believe, over time I've
collected one skein of various yarns that are deliciously luxurious--one has
hand tied/hand dyed silk ribbons interspaced on silk/wool blend-- way too
expensive for me to make a sweater. After seeing your shawl my recent scarf
experiment with Oliver Twist embellishment threads, Torchon may be the ticket.
Thanks again for sharing. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA

[lace] Manos del Uruguay yarn plus Oya, Sajou (Le Puy) Estonian lace,

2011-12-17 Thread hottleco
Hello All! After Agnes very kindly advised that the yarn she used is Manos del
Uruguay, I Googled to see if it was available in the US. So far I haven't
found the lace weight that she purchased from PollyJane (nice website) but I'll
keep looking plus check with the knit shop in Jupiter. In the meantime, Purl
Soho does carry some of their line. This is the knit shop that posted the
directions for my previously mentioned crocheted urchins they have some other
stuff that's worth a look: an Ondori book on Estonian lace, an Ondori book
(waiting for shipment) on Turkish Oya cards of Sajou cotton lace trims.
Staying on budget in the face of this sort of provocation is almost beyond me!!
Blame it on Agnes! LOL Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA

I just did a quick check of one of the websites where I buy my weaving
yarn. I knew they carried Manos and they have the lace weight. Here's
a link to the page for the lace weight Manos. I think I'm going to have
to look at that yarn closer for weaving too. :-)

I hadn't thought about that, and yes there could be problems if e-mail is
delivered right to one's computer via the mail browser.
I clicked from the message window and was directly in webshots - I use

Hi All,

I don't know about anyone else, but I am finding that Internet Explorer is
causing me a lot of problems: screens not completely visible, links don't
work and the program locks up intermittently to the point where I must be
constantly restarting. I switched to Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser
and I am so much happier. Web shots is also so much happier and more
cooperative.

I recommend others try it.

When I installed Firefox I then got a gmail address. It is great for
managing many (lace) e-mail messages. I have other e-mail at the mail
program Thunderbird.
Both programs are free to download. I like the filtering on both.

Lace interest - I'm going to wind Christmas bobbins to make one of the
ornament patterns from the Lace Guild advent calendar :)

[lace] Christmas Greetings from Oz

2011-12-17 Thread Noelene Lafferty
I post this to Arachne every year, as my greeting to all lacemakers:

Especially at Christmas,
Here's a greeting that brings
A whole lot of wishes
For life's nicest things-

May your lace give you pleasure
May your pins never bend
May the thread on your bobbins
Last right to the end.

May there always be prickings
And bobbins galore
And lacemaking friends
Coming in your front door.

And then through the New Year
May the same things hold true
So that each day is filled
With life's best things for you!

Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year!

[lace] Website for the 2011 Arachne Card Exchange is now open

2011-12-17 Thread Jenny Brandis
Hi everyone

Thanks must go to Amber for coordinating this years card exchange! Well done
Amber.

As you know, we have asked you all to scan and forward a picture of your
exchange cards so that they can be placed online for all to enjoy. If you
have not already done so (I am short approx 30 scans) then please ask your
partner to scan or photograph your work and forward them on to me for
inclusing.

This year I had not stressed that it would be interesting to see details
about the work and so there is less there but perhaps those who can remember
the particulars of their work will forward a bit for me to include.
Generally it is things like, the pattern origin, thread used etc.

The 2011 Arachne Card Exchange website is now open for your viewing and I
would like to ask you to take the time to read the short history of the
Arachne exchanges provided by Alice at
http://www.brandis.com.au/arachne/2006/index.html

It is well worth the wander around the different years as there is so much
there to see.

In the meantime, take a look at http://www.brandis.com.au/arachne/ and enjoy
this touch of the festive season, no matter where you are.

hugs
