Re: [lace] Mystery object
Please never photograph a receipt of this kind and post it where others can see the details. It probably contains identifying information that bad guys may use against you. Maybe that is why we cannot see the front? Maybe she removed some photos but neglected to remove this one? Whatever -- if anyone knows how to contact Marta St John-Anders, please advise her of the danger that international members of _Lace@Arachne_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne) noted. (I g**gled and found one person with this name in Meza ARIZONA, so someone on Arachne may know her or find her in a telephone directory there.) I am also not a Facebook member, but was able to pull up the photo. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 2/4/2015 9:21:31 A.M. Re: [lace] Mystery object
Right, in the end I took a snap shot of the picture in my fb app on the ipad, then opened the picture up and enlarged portions of it on the ipad. I think we are looking at this sort of upside down. The cuphooks are either to hang it from something or to hang something off it. In which case they should be either at the very top or more likely at the very bottom. This means that the stickyouty bits would be on the side. I know it sounds silly but I think that this is right because when you look at the picture of the back the label has the cup hooks at the end. So, how about this is a notice board with somewhere to hand your keys off? I'm interested in other guesses. Re: [lace] Mystery object
Dear Jacqui and the gentle spiders. I have solved accessing the picture issue but not what this is. If you access fb via the apps on a tablet or phone then you have the opportunity to click on 'Posts to page'. I normally access via my browser, even on the tablet because this actually gives me more control over which things fb shows me. By accessing through a browser (safari on the ipad and chrome / ie on the pc) The picture appears to have been stripped. As Sue and others have commented the photo in the comment shows up straight away however you access. Sometimes I really feel my age. As Groucho Marx used to say; this is so easy a child of 4 could do it. Get me a child of 4. Or in my case, an SEO Optimisation expert who is half my age and that I bribe with chocolate and sits opposite me. I am now completely bemused by the article. There are cup hooks and knobs and things on it. I think a major pondering is in order accompanied by a hot chocolate, I don't think that will solve the problem of what it is but the hot chocolate will be an enjoyable compensation. RE: [lace] Mystery object
The pic doesn't show up on The Lace Guild site but if you click on the name of the lady who asked the question and go to her home page on Fb then multiple pics for the object can be seen. I doubt very much that it can have anything to do with making of bobbin lace. The metal tabs on each corner would snag thread and the3 brass(??) posts that stick up proud of the surface on each side and then another down the bottom would also get in the way of thread and bobbin placement. And then there is the fact that it has the hanging wire on the back. whatever it is, it looks to me like it's mean to be hung on a wall. [lace] identification of a type of lace
Nathalie Those photos are very interesting. There are a number of things I can say, but I can't give you a place or time with any confidence. This page on my website has some which may be pottenkant. That form was made not only with Paris ground, but sometimes with Flanders ground, torchon ground, or others. http://lynxlace.com/bobbinlacepottenkantmilanese.html The first one on this page, #33, has torchon ground with figural motifs, instead of the usual geometric. I have been baffled by that piece since I first saw it, in Elizabeth Kurella's collection. http://lynxlace.com/bobbinlace18th.html Mechlin ground, after all, is torchon Brussels ground without the pin in the middle. I also have 2 books of Russian embroidery and lace, and I looked through them. There was a lot of figural torchon made in the 18th and 19th centuries, but the animal motifs and plant forms were heavily stylized, in a manner similar to their cross stitch embroideries. The figures in your piece are much more naturalistic. And they are reminiscent of some modern Paris lace that I have seen, in which hunting scenes and naturalistic animals and plants are prominent. http://lynxlace.com/images/lace32.jpg But Paris laces have the clothwork made differently than in torchon. So perhaps that isn't relevant. I've been collecting photos of figural torchon laces, but haven't found very many, and none are like the piece you refer to. https://www.pinterest.com/lynxlacelady/torchon-floral-figural-lace/ So, lots of words, about possibly related laces, which have some similarities, but not enough to declare identity. So my answer is basically, I don't know. But it has been a fun journey. Lorelei - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace
Got my copy of the British Lace magazine today and sat down straight away for my lace fix. Imagine my surprise when I spotted on page 58 under News from the Library the cover of the IOLI Bulletin with the photo of my gold necklace design on the cover. You can see my photo of it on my website. It was the winning entry in the IOLI Gold Rush competition in Sacramento. Then on the last page I spotted a poppy photo and thought, hmm, that looks similar to my poppy design. Read the article written by Janis Savage and I remembered she wrote to me about making a poppy. I had totally forgotten about it. What a nice surprise for me this morning. This morning I took my lace pillow to my knitting group to impress them with a piece of black Ipswich I was working and I even had time to sit outside this afternoon and make some more lace. Jacquie, I've just spoken to our experts here at work (the advantage of being rebranded IT) and we've all looked at the LG fb page but can't see the picture. They suggest that you might be able to see it as admin but I can't as a 'normal' (and I use that term loosely) person. We've use tablet and pc, safari, chrome and IE to look and can't access it.
