Re: [lace] Bolster Pillow
I love the feeling of pinning on wool layers. Much better than using Styrofoam or other synthetic material. It's true that these pillows made of wool blankets are heavy and not appropriate for travelling. But I don't travel with them anyway, so for me they are the best choice! Interesting this thread about making our own bolster pillows! Greetings from Spain, where summer seems to have come earlier than wished! Re: [lace] War laces
Dear Susan, The 2014 IOLI annual convention was in Sacramento, California. There is a collection of War Laces at Stanford University (alma mater of both Herbert Hoover and Lou Hoover - she was the first woman in America to receive a Geology degree from Stanford). Perhaps there was an activity at the IOLI convention about the War Laces at Stanford. Also, if you check your old IOLI bulletins, I believe Devon wrote about the Stanford collection several years ago. [lace] Bolster pillow
Thank you ALL for the great advice! I'm on digest so didn't receive answers from Anita, Alice, Clay, Adele, Cynce Antje until today. Now that I've digested all the info, I'll be ready to roll when I get to Pennsylvania! Anita, I'm arriving early on Sunday so will look for you at the venue. Clay, I hadn't thought about carpet felt! Wool blankets are getting hard to find so the felt could be my Plan B. Adele, my plan was to use a neck roll pillow as a pattern mine has drawstrings on both ends. Since Alice Lin both mentioned weight, perhaps weight could be added to the tied ends. Hmmm. Also Lin mentioned adding weight to the bottom of the basket if I find one. Shelf liner is in my stash. I will save the hollow pipe idea for a stay at home model. The airline is already raking me over the coals! Thanks again for sharing. [lace] Pronkrol
Thank you Gon, Adele Jocelyn for explaining the Pronkrol. Is there a tutorial on how to make one? Or a photo that could be posted to Flickr? Our little IOLI charter chapter can't afford a teacher so we are planning a Lace In at my house in June. We are going to make items from the weekly insertions edgings that are posted on Gon's site. Since there are so many ideas techniques, there will surely be something for everyone we will try to help each other master the lessons. It would be fun to make a Pronkrol to store our results! [lace] Every week an edging or insertion.
Dear Arachnes, The insertion of this week is published on my site http://bit.ly/1wTaqm5 http://bit.ly/1wTaqm5. It is a Torchon insertion designed by Bep Hoogerbrugge. She used a filling in this piece which is not frequently used in the Torchon, the five hole ground. Originally this is a ground in the Flanders lace, but it works also very well in the Torchon. Have fun this week with this insertion. It is already the 27th pattern we published in Every week an edging or insertion. I thank Lia Baumeister, Bep Hoogerbrugge and Christa van Schagen for the patterns they provided and the lace they made. Re: [lace] Pronkrol
Dear Susan, A roll of sampler embroidery stitches in the embroidery community is not that unusual. Here, I'll suggest you look at sampler books and articles - or ask someone in the Embroiderers' Guild for suggestions close to wherever you live. In fact, it seemed to me the Pronkrol was of embroidery. Today is rather busy for me, but I'll look at sampler books if you wish. There must be over 100 on my shelves from various parts of the world. It is the name Pronkrol that is throwing you off. Think of what is similar in English. There are also magazines, especially the quarterly Sampler Antique Needlework. You prompted a reply from me on May 10th about Tricia Wilson Nguyen of Thistle Threads. She writes for this magazine. You might find something like the Pronkrol in Tricia's older blogs. It will not carry a Dutch-language name. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Member of Embroiderers' Guild of America 47 years Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 5/13/2015 8:43:15 A.M. Re: [lace] Pronkrol
I found a table runner today, 13 x 70 inches, navy colour with a dark leafy fabric and plain dark edges around the whole thing, mitred at the corners. I could even tuck in the ends of the lace if I made small openings in the dark edge?! That might save some work. The most time consuming would be to stitch down the lace, so a person should likely do that before assembling the backing. Plus it would hide the anchoring stitches if they go to the back of the fabric. The lace runner would look nice on the table with rows of lace samples on display. Re: [lace] War laces
Since I subscribe to the digest, My reactions are not always immediate. In Sacramento last year at IOLI I gave a power-point lecture on the War Laces at the Smithsonian. The lecture was after the Tuesday lunch and does not show up in the program for the Convention. I don't know why they did not advertise it. Maybe it never is? After the Convention some of us went to the Hoover Archives to see the laces and flour sacks. After this coming IOLI Convention we plan to visit the Hoover Library to do the same. Re: [lace] lace: War Laces made in Belgium, WWI
It has been gratifying receiving your responses to the War Laces website, both privately and on Arachne. http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object-groups/world-war-one-laces It makes us want to continue our volunteer work with the lace collection. Regretfully it took a couple days for all the high resolution images to fully upload to the website, so several of you were rightfully frustrated over the low quality. I think you will find better quality images now. Click on the image to expand, then in the upper right corner x to close it. To read the information, click expand in the upper right corner of the text, and for more information and sometimes more detailed images, click on the lower right Full view in the gray-ish banner after each lace. Hope this helps. We welcome more information and questions about these pieces if you have any. Later this summer a few more War Laces will be added to the website. The issue of the introduction coming up on every page is being addressed. Liz, yes, together with Carol Watson, I put together the lace display at the American History Museum for the IOLI Convention in Bethesda and was one of the volunteers in the main Textiles storage room. I was the one giving the talk about the War Laces at IOLI last year. Jeri, Thank you for adding the Hoover Library website. Re: [lace] Pronkrol
Hi Susan: Many years ago I made a cloth banner. With help from a quilter friend, I made a backing that was bigger than the banner by a couple of inches on all sides. That extra fabric from the backing was folded in half and then folded over the edge onto the front side and stitched down by hand. I think this is the same way they make the pronkrols. The technique makes a nice neat edge and also since the edge is thicker the lace samples in the pronkrol would be protected. The only tricky bit is making a mitred corner at the edges, but if you can find an experienced quilter I’m sure they can show you the way. Re: [lace] Pronkrol
Hi Susan, Here's a follow up. I linked my previous photo to our Northern Lights Lacemakers blog and added two close up photos this morning. I love the idea of making a pronkrol and these sample board photos from a previous Lace Day are only to show the lace. Of course, the lengths would all have to be stitched down on a cloth roll. Now I realize what one purpose might have been, to show samples so people could choose a certain type of lace and then place an order? Many thanks to the Kloskant teachers for posting every week. [lace] Pronkrol
The good news is--it only took two times for my iPad auto-correct spelling feature to decide that Pronkrol didn't need fixing! LOL. Thank you for posting pictures Jocelyn. You must have a larger group. Our chapter has an upholstered lace-fabric board that is framed. We are going to attach lace examples to use for our upcoming demos library program so I think we are on the same page. Those are some lovely samples--may I place an order?!? vbg. Since the Pronkrol seems to be a more personal exhibit, Adele's idea may work better for our individual members. I was thinking of combining elements from a bobbin roll (but larger) a quilted casserole cover. Something with a flap or fabric insert to cover the lace, then rolled up tied shut when being transported. Thanks again for the suggestions feedback.
