I found this recipe on a blog: http://www.acommonplacelife.com/ and it
sounds delicious, so I'm sharing it here G.

Could someone bilingual (US/UK) please tell me

a) what is UK for all-purpose flour, and how much does 4.5 cups weigh?
b) what is the weight of 2 cups of brown sugar (I'm guessing dark soft brown
rather than demerara),
c) and of 1.5 cups of butter,
d) and of 0.5 cup of molasses (would black treacle be equivalent)?

I expect the 375 degrees are Fahrenheit, so I'd use 190 degrees Centigrade.

Thanks in advance,
Margery.

Re: [lace] Bookmarks query

2009-03-10 Thread Helen Tucker
I found that sandwiching a bookmark between two rulers worked quite well.  It
did need a bit of jigging around but not as much as I think you'd need with a
knitting needle.  I have this feeling that I also used a clean chopstick to
poke the tassle on the end straight.

Re: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS

2009-02-12 Thread Helen Tucker
By Imperial, do you mean inches or wire gauge?  Either way, there is another
conversion table here

http://www.jewelrymaking-beads-library.com/wire-gauge.html

I can't remember how wire gauge is calculated, but it's something to do with
how long a length of wire can be made out of a certain weight of metal.
Personally, on the rare occasions I've tried to knit something and my mum
hasn't got any metric needles of the right size, I just ask my dad as he's an
engineering-y sort of person ;o)

Thank you so much for all the help. I don't want to mess about doing sample

squares. I printed off the conversion charts some of you sent me links to,
many thanks. The problem is they are all Metric, Canadian and USA. My hooks
are
over 60 years old and are imperial. So I think I will treat myself to some
new hooks. Bye the way Brenda's Threads for Lace has been great sorting
out the

should be called threads for anything! Best wishes, Vivienne

Ah, there is one type of English lace that is back-to-front :o) Downton lace
(from the Dorset/Wiltshire area) is worked with the footside/headside swapped
compared to other English laces. Don't ask me why though, 'cause I couldn't
tell you!

[lace] ornament swap

2006-01-07 Thread Helen Tucker
Hi,

I'd post to people directly but my computer has decided that it doesn't have a
network card any more - so I have lots of emails that I can't reply directly to
any more. I'm currently using a library computer at uni.

My ornament did go in the post, although I missed the Arachne deadline, I did
get it finished and posted before last posting in the UK :o( I really don't
know what's happened to it.

From the other direction, I did get a lovely ornament from Lorri Ferguson
(???I'm so sorry, I've forgotten your surname and I'm not at my desk with
everything around me!) with a glass snowman bead.

Helen in Somerset who's trying to remember the formulae, but forgetting the
lace until 11.30am on Friday 27th January when she will walk out of her last
exam for a few months...

Re: [lace] polystyrene pillows

2005-03-16 Thread Helen Tucker
Hi,

I think the consensus has been - it's broken and can't be mended. Thanks also
to a couple of you that have said that you've got another polystyrene pillow
that I could have, but I think I'm going to go with something a bit sturdier
when I get one for me. If memory serves me right, I think the one I've got
right now was bought for my cousin who had more interest in lace than I did
when we were both about 10. So It won't be a big problem that it's broken.

Re: [lace] threads

2005-03-14 Thread Helen Tucker
Thanks for all of the help, everyone. I'm sorry if anyone was scared off by
the way I phrased my original questions, but I'm studying Physics and Chemistry
at uni, so instead of looking at, say, temperature and time, I was
investigating thickness of thread and apparent weight code :o)

The Mettler stuff might be a bit fine, but so far the only threads that have
broken have been sat on the bobbin for the past 10 or 12 years and the head of
the bobbin is a bit frayed, so it was understandable. I plan on making the
next pattern in colour (Venus threads) just because I can.

I'll probably order a copy of the book itself next month when I get the next
installment of my loan.
