[lace] black honiton
Hi all - I have made honiton with black silk thread and it was NOT easy - the sewings were very hard to see because of a black hole surrounded by black thread. It was a witch on broomstick that I did for the Lace Guild calendar some years ago. I said afterwards never again!! [lace] Old worn/damaged bobbins free to a good home
Hi Joanne. You can use old/broken bobbins for a number of things 1. If the neck is broken - Cut off and sand down to the body, make a small hole, and with some contact adhesive, insert a needle into the body, to use as either a sewing-in tool, or a pricker 2. If the body is damaged - Cut in half lengthwise, using material, some embroidery thread, make a small embroidered name tag, obtain a broach pin from your local bead shop and sandwich name tag between broach pin and bobbin. A unique name tag for lacing occasions 3. Also for bobbins where the neck has broken - Drill a whole through the length and insert a pen refil - a nice keepsake for those bobbins that have a special place in our hearts. There are lots more uses, but these 3 come most redily to mind. Regards JacquiB - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] another raffle
Hi spiders, and welcome back all the delegates from Montreal - we missed you. Last week I did my annual treat of Honiton lacemaking with Pat Perryman at our local residential college, and I have brought back a few items for a raffle. First prize is a beautiful tea towel in royal blue covered with pictures of honiton lace motifs - it's would make an excellent cover cloth if you couldn't bring yourself to use it for drying pots. Pat also gave me three packs of 4 x A3 size photocopies of part of a honiton lace flounce that is owned by the Allhallows Museum in Honiton http://www.honitonmuseum.co.uk and these will be 2nd,3rd and 4th prizes. There is a short explanation of the provenance of the lace in each pack - it's called the Esther Clarke Flounce and was made for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The details and quality of the lacemaking can be clearly seen in the enlargements. For anyone who makes Honiton lace it is a wonderful resource for techniques etc, and for anyone else it's just lovely to examine and admire the skill involved. So names to me please - just email addresses will do until I draw the winners, and the prizes will be sent post free, wherever you are. Starting with the number 1, look at the rows of boxes and columns of boxes to see if I there's only one place the missing number one can go - easy if two vertical boxes have a 1 in and the third has only one place it can go. I repeat that for all the other numbers and then start with one again, because having filled in other numbers, there's then often only one place for it to now go. Repeat horizontally. 2. Look at each vertical row of numbers in turn and try to see if there's only one place that 1 will go, then at the horizontal rows with the same purpose. 3. Look at each box of 9 to see if I can fit numbers in for sure - if there are two possible places, I lightly pencil in the number at the top of the square. 4. Repeat 1 to 3, which often means I can complete the puzzle - but not always. This is called 'slice and dice' or 'slice and slot' , but with the more difficult puzzles you can get to a point where this won't take you any further. Then you need to fill the empty boxes with all the options that will go there, starting with 1 and working down row by row, then carry on through to 9. After that there may be some boxes with just one number in and you can enter it and eliminate it from other boxes in it's square, then it's column and row. That may give you more possibilities which you can enter in the same way. If that dries up you can look for odd numbers ( I don't mean odd as in even and odd) amongst the options left in each square, row or column, and that will eliminate more. I got a book from my DH at Christmas called 'Killer Sudoku' by Carole Vorderman, and she explains how to do the most difficult puzzles, using the above, and more complex methods of elimination. [lace] fine coloured thread
Tamara said: For cotton, I'd use William Hall's 80/2, if it's still available, supplemented by the Cotona 80/2. I have a few spools and partial spools (they're v large) of Wm Hall thread, which Brenda told me was meant for weaving, but it works very well as a lace thread. And the colours are great - strong and vibrant, which is why they work well with the wimpy colours of Cotona. But I got mine from Jacqui Southworth (Larkholme Lace) in '98, which is why I'm not sure of its availability *now*. The label on the spool says: Wm Hall Co. (Monsall) LTD; Monsall Mills, Newton Heath, M/c.10 But I think Jacqui told me she got them in Manchester I don't have any colours at all now, or even white, just a few spools of ecru. He can't find anyone to spin it onto the small reels we use, so I won't be able to get any more once his stock has run out - a shame because (IMO) it is the best Bucks Point thread I've ever used. I also have 120/2 in white which I use for my honiton. He has quite a large stock of that so I will be selling it for a while yet. Colours in 80/2 are difficult to find and I think the range in Cotona is insipid. I have used Madeira Rayon 40 for Bucks but it works up more like a 50 Cotton than an 80. Re: [lace] displaying lace
Meanwhile, if you haven't already done so, put one of them on a luggage tag and send to the Lace Guild. There's still six weeks before the due date of the tags for the lacemakers census. Details are on the Lace Guild webpage. I second that - I have been helping Deborah Robinson to catalogue the labels for the LG and they have received an amazing assortment of lace, but we still need lots more - the numbers are no way representative of the numbers of lacemakers in the world, so please think about sending a label in. It doesn't have to be a complicated piece of lace - a simple braid design or an early sample, or a little torchon medallion (i.e. a shortened bookmark) - a tatted or needlelace flower, or a bit of knitted lace - anything would be great - just do it! In Johannesburg (Can't speak for the rest of the country) we have our Guild meeting once a month (at a recreation centre), where we can all come together to buy our goodies, take books out of the Library and share anything new that we have done. There are a few groups of people that get together during the week. We have our meeting on Wednesday morning. We do not have a fixed location but swap homes on a weekly basis. Whoever hosts provides lunch. On any given day there can be from 2 people upto about 7. Have I just bought a bunch of great paints to pass along to friend's little kids or are these suitable for using on my bobbins? Hi Darlene - well you've made the right first step by buying unpolished bobbins to paint. Many lacemakers make the mistake of trying to paint polished ones and wonder why it doesn't work. I use artists acrylic paint (in tubes) which isn't expensive and a little goes a long way. You can control the consistency and the colours are intense and vibrant. They are quick drying, don't smell, and I love the way I can layer the colours. I prefer non-sable paintbrushes - the nylon or man-made ones are better for painting on wood, and I use 5 zero and 4 zero. I coat them when dry ( 3 coats) with a plastic coating for wood, which you can usually get at a hardware shop, but polyurethane varnish will do as well - it just takes longer to dry between coats, and I need speed. The plastic coating can be re-coated in 30 mins. The brand I use is by Rustins and they have a web page: http://www.rustins.co.uk When I tried a water-soluble varnish on the paint it made all the colours run, so not very useful. BTW - I never varnish the necks of the bobbins - it makes them too slippy for thread, and gives me something to hold when I varnish them. My DH has made me a long wooden rack, raised at one end, with holes drilled into it, to hold them whilst drying - it makes my job a whole lot easier. Good luck. ttfn Jacqui Jacqui Southworth, Fleetwood, Lancs, England [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Larkholme Lace - Bobbin Lace Supplies, painted bobbins and tools, books www.larkholmelace.co.uk *** NEW - Christmas 2003 bobbins *** - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
