Re: [lace] Arachne anniversary
Hi Jacqui Yes, I remember Pat's gavel! That was a very special Convention in Nottingham. It must have been about the same time as you that I joined Arachne. I also read about it in 'Lace'. I have remained a member all these years and it was wonderful to meet some Arachnids in Groningen at the OIDFA congress last year. I don't always write much but I really enjoy all the advice offered on the list and the chat on Lace-chat. Thank you all for 13 years of friendship and indeed, long may it continue!! Lindy in Ireland I also know the day I joined - Jan 28th 1996 - it was my DH's birthday and I had read about arachne in the Jan issue of 'Lace' - I ran Kate Cantor in the Shetland Islands to find out about it and I'm still here. I don't write too much because I am a lot busier these days, but I still read every day, and I have made many friends through arachne over the years, and the arachne convention in 1998 was a really memorable experience (anyone remember Pat's gavel) Long may we continue :-))) Jacqui Southworth www.larkholmelace.co.uk -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. Re: [lace] Crete and lace
Hello Miriam I was in Crete in 2006 and took some photos of lace there. Some in a shop in Chania and some in the village of Fodele. This is where El Greco was born and a lovely village with craft stalls along the street. The women there do a lot of macrame and tatting. I did not see much bobbin lace but lots of embroidery and linen. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/546635229IWXtjq http://www.explorecrete.com/crete-east/fodele.htm I met Christina Koukoulari in Groningen at the OIDFA Congress last year. As far as I know, she lives in Chania in Crete. She told me she had family in Gavalohori where I had a meal in a restaurant when staying with my sister in Plaka. I hope someone has her address, she is a lovely person and I am sure she would be very welcoming, as all Greek people seem to be. Hope you enjoy the trip Lindy in Ireland I have just booked a flight to Crete . Those of you who took the OIDFA trip to Crete, could you please recommend lace related places there. I have 7 days there and want to get in as much as possible. Does any one of you have the address for Christina Koukoulari who was the bobbin lace teacher at OIDFA/Athens? Does she live on Crete? Re: [lace-chat] Lace Knitting
Nancy Bush's book on Lace Knitting in Estonia is on my Wish List with Amazon. I bought her sock book recently and am planning which pattern to knit first. The Noro yarn Yoga socks for my daughter were non identical - more siblings than twins! I now have a pair of FitFlops in the new winter version, like clogs, which are perfect to wear with my hand-knitted socks. Good knitting weather in Ireland at present! This pattern I have knitted has absolutely no sewing-up to do at all! Instead of casting off, I placed the shoulder stitches on spare needles. When I was ready to assemble before I could knit the collar, I did a double cast off for the shoulders. In other words, you hold both needles from the back and front shoulders in one hand and cast off two stitches at a time, one from each needle. This gives a nice finish on the shoulder and eliminates the sewing seam. I had also placed the back neck stitches on a needle and instead of picking up stitches I just used the stitches I had saved. I have about 4 inches of my beret done now and the Knitpick wooden needles are lovely to knit with. Re: [lace-chat] knitting
Well they say that knitting is the new Yoga! It has become very popular in recent years. The Internet is great for yarn buying if your local town does not yet have yarn shop which stocks anything other than acrylic furry stuff. (Yes, I an a yarn snob!!) Are any of you members of the Ravelry community? (http://www.ravelry.com) It is a wonderful resource for free knitting patterns (including lace knitting). There are lots of Groups devoted to lace knitting and the members of these Forums are very helpful if you need advice. The Guild of Irish Lacemakers has recently had lace knitting classes on their workshop days which I have enjoyed very much. Lindy in Ireland (Rosknit on Ravelry) H. this may be a good sign that the time is right for a class in knitted lace this summer! One is being offered at Sweet Briar if anyone is interested. What I do remember was that I thought that I certainly would not sell my handwork for that price!!! The saleslady said that the piece came from Crete as they made the finest bobbin lace in Greece. Re: [lace] Tatting lady
Hi Jane Talking of Nottingham lace, someone asked me recently if I knew of handmade Nottingham Lace. I understood that it was only made by machine. Can anyone enlighten me? Lindy in Ireland - Original Message - From: Jane Partridge [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: lace@arachne.com Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 10:41 AM Subject: [lace] Tatting lady But, and I have said this before, there is a reason for the confusion in the UK at least. One of the books on the history of the Nottingham Lace industry refers to tattings - being odd lengths of *machine-made* lace - edgings and insertions. So, to many of my mother's and grandmother's generation, the bobbin lace we are working produces something that looks the same as that which they would have called a tatting - and hence, in their minds, we *are* tatting. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] tatting - history
Dear Spiders When people talk of Irish lace they usually mean Irish Crochet or Carrickmacross lace. They do not know that Tatting was also taught and made in here from 1847 around the town of Ardee. It was made by poor children and as much as 5,000 Pounds was earned for distribution in that district in a very few years, thus affording considerable relief at that bad time, according to a booklet I have ... Guide to the Collection of Lace in the National Museum in Dublin. The art of tatting may be traced to the 16th century Italian macrame work, and is a variation of the punto a gruppo or knotting stitch. It was done in France in the 18th century. Lindy in Ireland - Original Message - From: Lynn Carpenter [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 2:01 PM Subject: [lace] tatting - history The earliest documented date I have heard so far is 1840's. Dan Russch-Fischer doesn't post much on any of the lists I'm on any more, but his page http://www.tribbler.com/tatman/ includes early printed references. Click on Misc at the bottom, then scroll down to In Print. Many tatting books make claims about its origin, but only a few give any documentation or references to support them. So tatting is fa-a-ar into the future for anyone doing Elizabethan. :) Lynn Carpenter in SW Michigan, USA alwen at i2k dot com http://lost-arts.blogspot.com/ - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] meeting + Skype
Hello Dorte I also have Skype and have only used it so far to talk free to my sister who lives in Scotland. I believe it works best if you have Broadband connection to the Internet (as we both have). I would be interested in talking to other lacemakers if a meeting is arranged. The only problem as in the virtual meeting is the time diference between us in Europe rest of the world. My Skype name is lacemaker if anyone wants to invite me to chat to them. I have downloaded the BETA version so should be able to see you on the webcam, though I have not tried that yet on Skype. Lindy in grey and wet Ireland about the meeting on the net, I have downloaded skype www.skype.com, there you can phone on the net for free, my son inlaw is at the moment in Singapore for 8 week in all, working, so I downloaded skype, bought a headset, a microphone will do, and as long you are on the net you can call other that has skype, you can allso meet in groups, so one can lace at the same time as talking to other, and if you have a webcam you can allso see the person, and the lace they are doing + sending pictures at the same time. Could that be an idear for another meeting, skype is free to download Dorte from Denmark - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace-chat] Re:Irish saying?
Hi Janice I have never heard this saying used in Ireland, but I like it!! Lindy in Ireland On another topic I received a letter from an English friend now living in southern Ireland. She has finally moved into her own house after renting for a couple of years and was complaining about dealing with the move. I quote from her letter as I don't think I have heard this saying before. I just had a barney with the transport guy who was trying to deliver me the wrong piece of furniture - he really swished the taffeta but I held my ground and gave him a flea in the ear. He has been back today to deliver the correct one and came and went like a lamb! Is swished the taffeta an Irish saying? Re: [lace-chat] These..laugh/books in order
Hi Bev I have read the first five in the series and have just bought the 6th. I really enjoy the atmosphere in the books, very African! We lived for years in South Africa and have visited Botswana so I feel very nostalgic when I read one of these. I think after the first one it probably is not necessary to read them in order but being a lacemaker, I did, of course! I have pre-ordered the new Harry Potter from Amazon months ago and am looking forward to its publication. I read an ad in a newspaper for Irish speaking children wanted to audition for the voices in a radio production of the first book! I don't know if it will do much to encourage the use of the Irish language since the book is available in English but at least the department responsible is trying to be up to date. Happy reading (and lacemaking of course!) Lindy in Ireland What I am reading now, the first of Alex. Hi Mikki I would love to see your photos but cannot find them using this URL. I was in South Africa 3 years ago and saw some lace in the Orange Free State made by Emily Hobhouse. Can't remember the name of the museum but there was a memorial to the Boer Women outside. The staff were very helpful and got some boxes of lace out of storage for me to look at. I was especially impressed by the Wag-n-bietjie needle lace which was in a glass case. [lace-chat] Microwave advice needed
Hello All My microwave needs to be replaced as the enamel is peeling from the inside. I was wondering if I should spend the extra money and get a combination oven with a grill as well as microwaves. Have any of you got one of these and do you use the grill part often? Are they easy to clean if fat spatters inside? I have an Aga (solid cooker run on oil) which I love, but it sometimes does not have enough heat left in the oven to brown things properly (e.g.. roast potatoes after roasting a turkey all morning!) and an ancient gas cooker as standby with a very feeble grill I don't use. Any advice would be gratefully received. Naturally I need a microwave oven to save time for lacemaking! (and Michelle's Christmas Pudding). Thanks Liz for your comment about the VA in London. We will be visiting my aunt near Oxford next month and my DH wants to go to the Science Museum in London, so you have confirmed my decision to go to the VA rather than spend time admiring the vintage engine parts of the Science museum! [lace-chat] Advice re. tatting class
Dear Friends I have a problem! The Adult Education Organiser has had this wonderful idea that the long-term patients in the local mental hospital need classes to occupy them during a long and boring day. There used to be an occupational therapy dept where they could do crafts but due to lack of funding it had to close some years ago. She asked me if I could give tatting classes for six weeks (an hour a week) to a group of 5 or 6 ladies. I agreed and had the first session on Wednesday last. It was not a success. The organiser had not actually met the ladies concerned. One of the 7 who were persuaded to attend said repeatedly I don't want to do this. I don't want to be here. Another had a bad headache and might have managed it, another had not the full use of one hand, one had an anxiety attack just after we finished. The rest, as I suppose they all were, were under the influence of drugs which made concentration difficulty for any length of time. It had been a long time since any of them had used their hands. I stayed an hour. They are keen to do something other than watch TV and smoke but I really feel tatting is a little too difficult until they get used to handcrafts. (It was made worse by the fact that they normally have a cup of tea at 2.30pm and I did not realise that when I said I would be there at 2pm. I have now agreed to start at 2.45pm so as not to deprive them of one of the punctuation points of their days!) The organiser wanted them to learn something they could go on with after the six weeks were over. I thought of felt making, which does not require such dexterity, but would they be able to continue on their own? Also materials are not available locally and would have to be ordered from Dublin and may be expensive for people on disability allowances. I really want to help them learn something, but what? Would wool crochet be easier to learn then tatting? I can do most fibre crafts and could show them crochet or knitting. One lady wants to do tapestry, but kits are expensive and would the others have enough dexterity to thread a needle? Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully received, as it is keeping me awake at night! Worried Lindy in Ireland (where the weather has been wonderful this Autumn and the days sunny and bright.) Re: [lace] TURKISH LACEWORK OYA CATALOG 2 VOLS FIGURES on ebay
Hi Both Jeans and those interested in Armenian Needlelace! I did a beading class at the Convention of Irish Lacemakers recently with Pat Trott who also taught Armenian needle lace to some of the class. I Googled and came up with some examples on this page http://www.urartu-cilicia.netfirms.com/armenian_janyag_art.htm Lindy in Ireland I think that Oya is the term used for the Armenian knotted lace. (ie) .needlelace), but I can't lay my hands on the book to check at the moment. Looking at some of the sellers other items however, they have a scarf with what appears to be crochet and beads round the edge, It seems to be just the same as the one I bought in the turkish part of Famagusta, Cyprus 35 years ago. It is on muslin cloth, large headscarf size, edged with crochet and decorated with seed beads, which had obviously threaded on before the crochet was started. I did not know anything about Armenian lace then so I did not look for any examples. Jean in Cleveland U.K., trying to stay cool and fighting with a cross stitch picture which has gone rather wrong!
