Re: [lace] 1851 Great Exhibition catalogue
I remember Barbara Underwood saying that Thomas Lester used family and friends for his complicated patterns as they would not be cost effective for the average lacemaker. Maybe they used ivory bobbins. I always thought it would be impossible for antique bobbins to be ivory but maybe there are some about. I do have one ivory Bobbin which was made by Richard Gravestock, possibly early to mid 1980s just before it became illegal to sell ivory. And I have an Antique ivory parasol but I have no idea how old it is. Even if it was legal I wouldn’t buy ivory now. RE: [lace] Machine lace and its manufacture
Dear Jane, Devon and others Jane and your email sent me scuttling to get my book out, Well Suited to the Colony by Gillian Kelly. The Naponic War ended in 1814 and it is believed that the first lace machine was smuggled into Calais in 1815. Until then the English were not welcome in France. This is St Pierre le Calais and not Calais as we know it today as the inhabitants of Calais asked that the machines were moved from Calais as they were noisy. By 1824 there were 412 English living in Calais and by 1841 this had increased to 1420. At that time the machines were making net for decoration in Paris, more than likely tambour as it was not until the 1830s a man named Jacquard provided the help and information to enable lace to be made on a machine. As a result of the French Revolution the lacemakers left Calais in 1848 and had a four month trip[ to Australia. Approximately 1000 people emigrated to Australia to take up new lives, most had their fare paid under the 'Bounty' system but some funded it! themselves. Ironically they did not take their machines with them and became general labourers, farm hands etc in Australia. See the website of The Australian Lacemakers of Calais, which was set up in 1982 as people started to research their ancesters, which gives more information. I have several hundred photos from Gillian Kelly as well as information and photos from the then Chairman Richard Lander as I was giving talks etc about the subject. They both answered lots of questions for me and were extremely helpful and happy for the stories to be told in the UK. I think I did a review of the book in about 2007 and then wrote an article, which had drawings with it but not by me, giving further info etc for the Lace Guild a few months later.Anyone who was in the Lace Guild at that time will have seen the article and book review. I can give further information etc but must dash as I have to collect youngest granddaughter from school. [lace] Machine lace and its manufacture
Good morning Following on the discussion about the above topic, there is a book called Well Suited To The Colony, written by Gillian Kelly from Australia, which tells the story of the manufacturers of machine lace from when they left England due to hard times to go to Calais France and then when they left France during the French Revolution, their journey to Australia and what happened to them after that. It is well worth reading. I was asked to review the book for the Lace Guild and it opened my eyes to their way of life and how they were treated. There is a website called The Australian Lacemakers of Calais which was set up by descendants of the Lacemakers and is very informative and helpful. As a result of me doing the book review, I then bought a copy, made contact with both Gillian and Richard, the then Chairman of the group and got lots of information and help from them as I did a talk or two to tell their story. And I am a dedicated hand lacemaker, but it did change my perce! ption of machine lace and the makers of it. Not only was hand lacemaking a hard lifestyle, see the stories of the children at lace schools but it was for the machine Lacemakers as well. My belief is that as it was featured in Golden Hands which I think was published in UK in 1969 and the older Lacemakers were asked to do more teaching. The WI used to have craft classes I think. Boredom with commercially made items and a desire to learn, plus a little more money for hobbies? Or people had progressed from knitting to crochet and wanted to try something else? I too started lacemaking in The early 70s but I had seen it in Golden Hands and found a local handicraft group that were putting a class on. Well I was going for embroidery classes at the time, but moved over to the lace class, supposedly for one term but which continued for a lot longer, to learn lace. Then the County Adult Education classes, I think, started in the mid 70s but also Doreen Wright wrote a book on lacemaking and the Lace guild was started in 1976. Suppliers then found that people wanted bobbins, I bought my first ones from Doreen Fudge who was at Luton Museum, and then lace days started which I believe encouraged more Lacemakers, which encouraged more classes. I was also a member of IOLI about 1974 and only didn't rejoin when the Lace Guild started. I started to teach lacemaking when the local teacher had a waiting list but didn't have enough hours or days in The week to start another class, but that was about 1980 I think. And it was very much a case ! of being one step ahead of the students at the time because there were gaps in the beginning laces I had somehow skipped! Incidentally I learnt to knit whilst in primary school, was taught dressmaking at school and by my mother in law, and taught myself to crochet in 1970 as I wanted to crochet myself a dress. RE: [lace] Re: hint - elastic bands on bobbins
Good afternoon Regarding the subject of marking bobbins o keep track of specific bobbins. I also found that the elastic bands marked the bobbins if they were on for a few weeks, and this included a couple of painted bobbins I have.I now cut straws into about 1inch(2.5 cms) lengths and then slit the piece of straw along the length of it and slide it over the shank of the bobbin. Works on continental and Midlands bobbins. Also if I have a particularly troublesome thread such as silk or metallic threads I also slip the straw over the thread which will then stop the hitch knot coming of. Not my idea but was suggested to me. Maureen E Yorks UK Where it is cold but no snow. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace: Point ground laces
Just because he studied them in the early 1800s I would think they started before quite a while before then. A question to the curator at the Lace Guild may well help. Or maybe look at Santina Leveys book, Lace, as she was at the V & A in London for many years. Although their lace collection is, I believe, in deep storage now, as well as the lace in Bedford Museum and Luton. [lace] Lace in Prague
Hello Cindy you raised a question on 11th January about touring with beaders and you asked for details of places in Prague and Dagmar, on the 16th January, you kindly answered her questions. .Cindy, if you can make it to the city of Vamberk, there is a beautiful lace museum. I am assuming that when you mention beads and blown glass that you'll be traveling to Jablonec. Vamberk is only about 2 hours from there, so you might be able to swing it. In Prague itself, there are often small exhibitions taking place in local galleries and the fiber arts tech school. If you reach out to me closer to the date, I can check on what's available. >From the ongoing exhibits, I'd recommend the jewish museum in Prague which carries some amazing golden wire lace and I also hear that the museum of industrial design is reopening and will likely have some lace on exhibit. The folk museum (Naprstkovo muzeum) tends to have folk costumes on display which feature variety of lace. Hope this help, feel free to reach out to me direct for details. Dagmar, a Czech transplant to Wisconsin.. I have been asked to add/verify the following information by a friend of mine who says: .Just one mistake: Czech folk culture is displayed in Ethnographic Museum of the National Museum <http://www.nm.cz/Historical-Museum/Long-term-Exhibitions-HM/Czech-Folk-Cult ure.html> http://www.nm.cz/Historical-Museum/Long-term-Exhibitions-HM/Czech-Folk-Cultu re.html Naprstek Museum (Naprstkovo museum) has other collections (Asian, African and American Cultures)... Good morning all Not The Battle of Britain I know, but I have a book called 'The story of Ma's Laces 1914-1918 written. Kerry and Carol Brooksbank in 2004 detailing how one lady dealt with the war in Belgium. The ISBN no is 0-901100-54-4. It was published by a company in Sheffield South Yorkshire but I don't think it is in print now. It is fascinating how Ma coped with the war through her lace. Re: [lace] Dentelle Bigoudene (Picot Bigouden)
Good morning Picot Bigouden is a crochet lace very much in the style of Irish crochet and was, I think, modelled on it. I have a book on this lace having been to a workshop on it last year. The book is in French but the photos are very clear so you can work the patterns out if you can't speak or read the language. If you want any further info, let me know and I can get the book out. It has an ISBN number and I think it can be bought on Amazon but the teacher I went to was taking orders and sending it on. Bigouden is a very small fishing village on the west coast of Britanny. Although I can pick up all (I think) of the messages on my iPad, if I use our main computer then a lot of the messages only come through with the first line in. If I was reliant on using the main computer, I would have unsubscribed long ago. With the vast changes in technology maybe it is time to consider to upgrade. Re: [lace] Lace Police
No need to apologise Corinne, it could have been any of us. On 23 Apr 2015, at 08:31, corinne Sorry it was on my pillow Maureen when I was with Alex on Monday. The bobbin was made by Stuart Johnson as a special order. I suspect I might have been involved, although it wasn't on my pillow last week when Alex saw it. When a group of us go on lace courses we save the silly sayings and have a bobbin made. I have several different ones now, adds to the fun. I would guess that Stuart Johnson, Winslow Bobbins or Margaret Wall would have made them. But any of them will make bobbins to order. [lace] RE: Exeter Museum
I have not been to Exeter Museum but our local lace group had a talk by Carol McFadzean who has connections with the museum.I suspect that, like a lot of museums in this country, lace is being put into storage rather than being readily available. I would suggest that once you have decided which museum you want to visit you contact them and see what they have exhibited and whether they have any lace in the 'backroom' which you could look at. I did that with Allhallows Museum in Honiton a few years ago and spent a few hours studying lace which was not on display. I can't remember how much I increased the pattern to for 50 Cotona type thickness but seem to think that 130% or 140% sticks in my mind. However the best thing to do is to experiment by printing several copies of the pattern, marking it with the print sizing and trying it out. Try a little cloth stitch, half stitch and a ten stick. But having the advantage and flexibility as to the number of pairs of bobbins used in certain areas of the lace is helpful. This may be of some help and if I get time in the next few days to try it I will report. [lace] Lace in Museums
And there is always Exeter Museum which has a lace collection as well as the museums in Bedford and Luton which do have collections of lace but I am not sure whether it is available nowadays as I was told that it was all packed away. [lace] Lace on the Great British Sewing Bee
Good morning Just to let everyone know that BBC2 gave lacemaking a bit of publicity last night. The contestants have to make a pencil line skirt but in lace fabric and it had to be lined as well.At the end of the challenge the programme then went on to say that lacemaking has been made since the 16th Century, especially in Olney and showed four ladies doing bobbin lace and explaining a bit about it. They then went onto show the lace machines. The feature was probably about 5 minutes long and it was nice to see it included. The programme is on BBC2 and has a repeat tomorrow (I think). For those not in the UK who would like to see it it can be seen in iplayer. A nice little advert for lacemaking although they did say it was slow to produce. Maureen E Yorkshire UK where it is sunny and set to warm up for the weekend. And Wolds lacemakers have our lace meeting tomorrow in Hull UK. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Ecclesiastical Embroidery Exhibition at Ely Cathedral
Good morning The note from Louise about the above exhibition came just in time for me. My husband and I had arranged to meet friends at Duxford over last weekend. The men went to the Air Museum but my friend and I decided we would go to see the above exhibition. We thoroughly enjoyed it.I have done some goldwork in the past but not to the standard of the RSN, but my friend, although she sews and is a lacemaker has not worked any.I was able to explain some of the techniques to her and one or two people who were stood behind me asked me questions too.I stressed that I was only a visitor who was able to answer some of the questions but not connected to the RSN in any way, although I would have liked to have attended a course or to with them. It took us a while to get round the exhibition and we did need to go and have a coffee part way through so we could refresh body and mind. And it was nice to see some part worked pieces so people could appreciate how it was done.Thank you Louise, without your email we would not have known about it. It has made me want to do some goldwork again. [lace] Symbols on lace prickings
Following Jane's question about rose ground. Another thought has come to me.We all know the most common symbols for features of, a dot in the centre of a space for a tally or a mayflower, a diamond for Roseground, a circle for honeycomb etc., but I wondered if anyone had their own favourite symbols on prickings to show various different features. I know that Alex Stillwell's book Lace Dictionary shows several variations I wondered if there were any others which have not yet been recorded. RE: [lace] Rose Ground
The rose ground I use for beginners is, following your sequence A CTC B CTC 1 CT, pin CT 2 CT, pin CT 3 CT, pin CT 4 CT, pin CT C,,, CTC D,,, CTC By being the same stitch throughout it means that they are not concentrating on the different stitch as well as the sequence of working. It is more open than your version though which I use regularly. Maureen E Yorks UK - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Wedding Hanky to Baby Bonnet
This is interesting information from Jeri, thank you. I just wanted to tell you that Alex Stillwell has three booklets on Handkerchief bonnets, one in Torchon, one in Bedfordshire and one in Bucks Point, all suitable to be used as a wedding handkerchief. Each booklet provides the pattern for the lace, instructions to mount the lace onto the fabric and instructions as to how to fold handkerchief into a baby's bonnet. These booklets are GB £2.00 and value for money. They make a lovely present for any occasion and have even been used as Christmas cards. For further information on the booklets go to Alex's website: alexstillwell.woodpress.com/books/ I am just a satisfied customer. Re: [lace] Carrickmacross lace
Dear Karen Carrickmacross is a lovely fine lace. I don't do much, more of a bobbin and Needlelacer but I do teach basic Carrickmacross. The organdie will hold and not fray away but you need fine stitches to hold your couching thread down and they should be no further apart then The width of the thread you are couching down. Can't lay my hand on the books at the minute but I seem to think the thread you are couching down is about 60/80 crochet cotton thickness. When you trim the organdie away, be very careful you don't cut the net, I have done that and it is annoying. Also when trimming leave just a very small amount of the organdie next to the couching thread, would say about 1mm at a guess. Also if you are putting loops around the edge of the piece, when you come to cut the excess fabric and net away, fold the loops back out of the way and hold them down with your thumb. I didn't do this on my first piece and cut a loop. This is obvious when you are told it but not always be! fore. I use the special Carrickmacross scissors with a bulbous end on one blade which helps a lot. Look forward to seeing your results. I hope this makes sense, if not please ask again Regards Maureen - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
