[lace] Honiton with rectangles

2016-05-17 Thread Susan
Adele, thank you so much for posting! I was having trouble imagining the
collar from your description so it was kind of your friend to send photos to
share. Love the bird, thistle & shamrocks (??). Does your friend ever wear
her collar? It is stunning & would look very chic indeed on a light weight
cashmere sweater, perhaps with a cameo. It's too pretty to be trapped in a
drawer! She's a lucky lady. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Thanks for sharing this (and posting the link so I can get to it easily).
Definitely an interesting piece, though the pivoted bars are unusual.

May I appeal to anyone sharing photos on Arachne to post a link to them. It
makes life so much easier. Mm..I may need to take this last request
back - on going to the end of the original message to delete it, I noticed
the link to Flickr. I don't usually notice all that, but because the cursor
on my iPad would not obey, I looked at it for longer than usual. If I had a
tail, I think I would tuck it between my legs right now 😕

Regards to all,
Karen in Malta.

Hi Adele,

I think it is probably Honiton - the flowers including the thistle are typical
as are the leaves with raised work. I’ve never seen quite such a regular ground
of picoted bars before but maybe someone was trying to be a bit different! The
bird looked familiar and that’s because there’s a very similar one in a Honiton
flounce in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.

The picot braids in a square pattern look to me like the 'purl edged braid
squares' shown on pages 75 and 25 of "Honiton Lace: A collection of
rediscovered fillings" but in this case the purls are only on one side of
the braid not both.

I look forward to hearing what others think, as I am not a Honiton expert

Wow! That is a very beautiful piece of lace! I see what you mean about the
rectangles. I don't have a clue, but love it anyway. It would seem to be very
meticulous to make (for me anyway).

Thanks for sharing!

Subject: [lace] Honiton With Rectangles?

Hi Everybody:

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question (below) about a Honiton collar, and
didnt hear from anyone. Happily the owner of the collar has sent me
some
photos, so I invite you to take a look at them and tell me what you think
(see
link at bottom of message).

My original question:

> A member of my lace club brought a beautiful lace collar into our last club
meeting. It is an heirloom, coming from her family in the English Midlands,
and is 100 years old, if not older. The lace is very finely made -
beautifully
made - in a sophisticated design of flowers and birds in very fine white
cotton, with extensive raised and rolled work. Given the provenance, I would
say it might be a very well-made, well-designed Honiton. Or it might be
Duchesse.

>

> But this beautiful lace has a feature that I have not seen before and
cannot
find in any of my books. The flowers and leaves are held together with fine
braids, but they dont zig-zag back and forth in the usual way.
Instead, the
picoted braids make a background pattern of rectangles, about 1 cm x .8 cm or
so. Has anybody ever seen anything like this?

Now, I tried - I really tried - to put these photos up on the Arachne Flickr
site. But I couldnt make it work. However, I did quite accidentally
create
my own Flickr album and uploaded them there, so please take a look:

Thanks for any help. What do you think? Honiton? Duchesse?

[lace] Honiton With Rectangles?

2016-05-04 Thread Adele Shaak
While the list is quiet, I would like to ask a question.

A member of my lace club brought a beautiful lace collar into our last club
meeting. It is an heirloom, coming from her family in the English Midlands, and
is 100 years old, if not older. The lace is very finely made - beautifully made

might be a very well-made, well-designed Honiton. Or it might be Duchesse.

But this beautiful lace has a feature that I have not seen before and cannot
find in any of my books. The flowers and leaves are held together with fine
braids, but they don’t zig-zag back and forth in the usual way. Instead, the
picoted braids make a background pattern of rectangles, about 1 cm x .8 cm or
so. Has anybody ever seen anything like this?

I’m sorry I didn’t have a camera with me at the meeting, so I cannot post a
picture, but I’m hoping someone might be able to recognize it from my
description.
