buy a copy of it.

Thanks for reminding me about it.

Yes I bought Jeans book of bookmarks they have Thistles,Roses,Daffodils and
Shamrocks? I made the Rose one for my sisters birthday haven't got round to
making the others yet. They are all very pretty and made using Bedfordshire
techniques. I don't think they are for the absolute beginner but Jeans
General instructions are really good .

Jean Leader's Book, A Thistle, A Rose and a Daffodil also has a pattern in it
for a shamrock bookmark. It's not a truly Irish design, but if shamrocks aren't
Irish I don't know what is. Holly sells it for 19.95.

Lorri: I’m wondering if maybe your student means a knotwork “Celtic” pattern,
since that what we see associated with Ireland so often, rather than a BL
pattern that was traditionally made in Ireland.

I have a student that would like a bobbin lace pattern for a bookmark that is
a typical 'Irish pattern'.

I know BL was not a prevalent as other laces, but the student wants a BL
pattern. If there is not a bookmark pattern then an edging or insertion
pattern would do as we can create a beginning and end.

Thank you every one always interesting to hear you explain either just tiny
bits about it or some in much more detail, Brilliant.
I was never much interested in needle laces (although i did some embroidery

got more interested in looking and maybe trying one or two bits.Spurred

[lace] Irish Lace exhibit at Castellani Museum Niagara Falls, NY

2012-12-01 Thread Celtic Dream Weaver

Today was an exciting day. I was meant this morning at McDonalds in
Canandaigua, NY by some of my FingerLakes Lace Guild members. We went on a day
trip to Castellani Museum located in Niagara Falls. I was close to the falls
but wasn't there...LOL I do want to go to the Falls one of these days. I have
been wanting to go back for years. The last time I was there I was a kid with
my hair looking very much so Victorian with my hair pulled back and ringlets
hanging down my back. I do have natural curly hair. Anyways, It was a
long drive to the museum. But there was plenty of conversation and a couple
rest stops...and I bought a StarBucks mocha to drink on the way.
   The lace
exhibit was put together by Molly Carroll. I know Molly and have seen her at
Ithaca Lace Days that takes place every year during Columbus weekend. She is a
dealer of laces and I do have a few pieces of Irish laces that I have gotten
from her over the years.
The laces were beautiful. She had Carrickmacross
with fine machine net and without the net Guipure , Youghal pronounced Yawl,
Needlerun Tambour needlelace. There was also Irish Crochet. The exhibit was
just wonderful. I thank Shirley Egan for picking us up and taking us there.
Right now I can't type no more for my fingers are sore from my skin
cracking...a sure sign that Winter will soon be upon us. We did have a slight
bit of snow yesterday...so maybe this year Winter will be more like
Winter...snowy and cold. I will be posting some pictures on my blog maybe
tomorrow. I will have to see how my fingers are tomorrow. It was a wonderful
day...in the Lacingneighborhood

[lace] Irish lace

2010-11-08 Thread tess parrish
Thanks to John Cropper and the helpful people at the University of
Arizona, this email has just arrived to me, concerning Irish lace. I
am hoping that there will be people on the list who will write Sorcha
with encouragement and information. Two subsequent emails from her
have let me know that she may be planning a lace exhibit in the near
future from the holdings at the university of Kansas, and I have
suggested that she scan and send me some examples of what seems to be
a nice collection of laces there. I went through the library holdings
and found a couple of books that I haven't scanned, so am hoping to
find them somewhere and to add them to the Archives.

Sorcha sounds like a lovely lively young woman and I hope she
discovers for herself not only the history of lace in Ireland, but the
fun of giving it a try!

Thanks to any and all for your help.

fallen and been raked up. A new season begins!

  Good Afternoon University of Arizona,

I found this PDF file online, with your name and Computer Science
department associated with it in the url:
  http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books/cas_ilce.pdf

I am an Irish Citizen, from a part of Ireland referenced in this
article, currently researching the origins of a large quantity of
unidentified lace objects in University of Kansas' Spencer Museum of
Art collection. I am, without being an expert, quite confident a
sample of the lace comes from New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland.

I would like to enquire about where the above PDF was scanned from,
or what the origins of this document may be. It looks like it was
published in a book, in which case I am curious to know if you could
send me any information on the title, author, publisher etc? It could
help me (as it contains photographs of Irish lace) identify or
eliminate where this lace is from.

I am also in the process of curating a small installation, where I
hope to feature some of this lace - and ideally another copy of this
book, or with permission, this PDF file to accompany the lace display.
The exhibition focuses primarily on Irish literature and art, but the
lace would be a great addition - especially if I can validate its
origins, or even pose a possible origin.

Any information you are willing to share, or if you have a standard
protocol for sharing texts such as this one, I would like to hear more.
Thank you in advance for any assistance - or forwarding contact
information - you can provide.

  Sincerely,
  Sorcha Hyland

(Youth Family Outreach Coordinator, Spencer Museum of Art,
University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS).

Thanks for the Irish Lace site. What an amazing collar!
While there, I looked up the Carrickmacross, and saw a fan made by Mary
Shields. Well, Mary Shields is here in Melbourne, at the moment, and we
spent the most marvellous day with her, yesterday.
About 12 of us turned up, and had a talk-fest!! Besides showing some of our
lace, Mary brought some of her Carrickmacross to show us, and after lunch
gave a bit of a workshop for us. I had made some of the lace from her
books, but was able to gather a host of little tips to make my work
(hopefully!) better.
She is the most delightful lady, and it was a privilege to be a part of the
day. I also asked her to sign my copies of her book, which makes them so
much more special!

I had the same reaction when I clicked on the photo to see the enlargement. I have,
perhaps unfairly, thought of Irish laces as rather crude cousins to the more refined
European laces, but this particular example is splendid. Unfortunately, I couldn't
find any more info on the Web.

Re: [lace] Irish lace

2003-09-25 Thread LaceSpinner
Absolutely gorgeous! Irish lacemakers are true artisans in every right, but one must
realize that many of the forms of lace that developed in Ireland were created out of
economic need. Laces such as Carrickmacross and Limerick and even Irish Crochet were
more commercially viable than the time-consuming Youghal and Inishmacsaint needlelaces.

Even so, one must acknowledge Irish Crochet as being one of the most creative and
technically demanding forms of needlework!

I agree with the assessment of Inishmacsaint as belonging to the same family as Gros
Point de Venise, very beautiful!
